Life moves quickly, doesn't it? And before you know it, you've gone through relationships, career changes, life transitions, family drama, friendships, and growth milestones in the blink of an eye. It's one thing to be able to slow down or even pause to savor all the good stuff, and it's another to let go of things that have taken up space, hurt you, and stunted your happiness. In this episode, Minji sits down with her friend, artist/producer/creator Jessica Stafford, to dive into how important it is to let go of emotions, wounds, regrets, and even tangible things from our past that can hold us back. Jessica shares some of her life's biggest challenges, including a very difficult relationship with her mom, moving around, being bullied, and figuring out her life path through many location, careers, and versions of herself. Together they reflect on what they've learned about messing up, including how we can all make the same mistake repeatedly to finally learn its necessary lesson. This goes out to anyone who's needing to take an emotional or mental load off, so they can move forward on purpose with more freedom. This week's guest:Jessica Stafford (@alazay_official)Follow Minji on:Twitter (@minjeeeezy)Instagram (@minjeezy)Clubhouse (@MinjiChang)Our theme song is "Inner Me" by Melissa PolinarFollow the show on Instagram and Twitter and support our PatreonThis podcast is part of Potluck: An Asian American Podcast CollectiveProduced by @marvinyueh

Episode 121: Middle School Play Mania: multiple plays with multiple classes Middle School Teacher Jessica Stafford isn't just doing one play. She's doing a play with multiple classes. And she's not doing the same play, each class gets their own play. How do you produce multiple plays with multiple classes and not go crazy? Listen in and learn! Show Notes Hamlet Zombie Killer of Denmark Hairball Oddball School Daze The Absolutely Insidious and Utterly Terrifying Truth about Cat Hair   Episode Transcript Welcome to TFP – The Theatrefolk Podcast – the place to be for Drama teachers, Drama students, and theatre educators everywhere. I'm Lindsay Price, resident playwright for Theatrefolk. Hello, I hope you're well. Thanks for listening. Welcome to Episode 121 – one two one! You can find any links for this episode at the show notes at – you guessed it – theatrefolk.com/episode121. So, today, we are talking Middle School Play Mania, specifically the type of mania that would make a middle school teacher put on not just one play, not two plays, not three plays. How about more than that? How about five plays in a year? We're going to be talking to middle school teacher, Jessica Stafford, about what she has to say about putting on multiple plays in a year with her classes – so, you know, two grade six classes put on a play, and her grade sevens, and her grade eights – and what these multiple productions do for her, how she has to organize, what do they do for her students, and even how she assesses them. So, let's get to it. Linsday: All right. I am here with middle school teacher, Jessica Stafford. Hello Jessica! Jessica: Hi Lindsay! How are you? Lindsay: I am awesome. How about you? Jessica: Doing well. It's the Thanksgiving break. Lindsay: Oh, yes! And your kids just literally walked out the door, didn't they? Jessica: Four minutes ago. Lindsay: And now, you're doing a podcast. Jessica: Yes! Lindsay: Thank you so much! Jessica: Any time. Lindsay: So, the reason that I wanted to talk to Jessica is that she's not doing just one of our shows, she's not doing two of ours shows, she's not doing three of our shows. How many shows are you doing right now? Or have you done with your classes in total? Jessica: With you guys this year? Let's see – one, two, three, and then a fourth one coming up in March. Lindsay: So, what you're doing is you are doing a play with which grades? All of them, right? That you're connected with? Jessica: No, sorry, five. We've done five, and I may be doing six. Yeah, what I have, I have fifth through eighth grade, and my fifth graders, I do something different with them because they're only nine weeks and it's just too difficult to try and get them – that's really like herding cats in a classroom. And so, I have two six grade classes, and what I did this year was we used your show School Daze and I casted in both classes. So, one class performed one night and then the other class performed it the next night, and that was a wonderful experience because the kids got to see how another group did it. One class had 31 kids but only 3 boys; and the other one had 27 kids and 8 or 9 boys. So, the casting was very different. And then, one of the nights, we missed three kids and so I was able to just pull kids from their class and put them up on-stage. So, that was a big help. The other ones are seventh grade which are doing Hairball, and eighth grade which is doing Hamlet, Zombie Killer of Denmark. Lindsay: And this is all in one semester, right? Jessica: Correct. Lindsay: So, how crazy are you? Jessica: Many days, I wonder that myself. But, you know, with the kids, it's so easy because the scripts are so accessible and so relevant and the kids really grasp the idea – I mean, except for the Shakespeare thing, the Hamlet thing, they're still fighting me and we're in Week 12 or 13,

Some of you started school two weeks ago which boggles my mind. It has been engrained in me for, I don't know, almost forty years that school starts the day after Labor Day. School starts the day after Labor Day. You people who start school in August, they're freaking me out. And some of you, speaking of which, you're getting ready to get going right now, and what that means is teachers everywhere across the country, across multiple countries, that first day of school has either just happened or is looming, and for many teachers, the first day of class is the most important day of the year. What do you do on Day One? So, let's find out. We have five teachers who share what they do with their students to make the most out of that first day. Everyone is different; everyone is valuable. Let's get to it! Lindsay: Okay! So, now I am talking to Teacher Matt Webster. Hello, Matt! Matt: Hi there! Lindsay: And you teach in North Carolina. Matt: Yes, outside Charlotte, North Carolina. Lindsay: Awesome. We're talking about Day One. How many different classes do you see at the beginning of the year? Matt: Beginning of the year, I have a lighter load because I'm the department chair for fine arts so I teach typically two classes a day and people are going to pull their hair and roll their eyes at that, but I teach two classes a day and, usually, I have four classes overall that I teach and two of them are often beginning theatre classes. That's not true; I teach eight classes because we do A Day, B Day. So, I have more classes. Lindsay: All right, Matt. You teach a lot of classes, right? Matt: Yes, I have less than most, but it's all good. Lindsay: So, let's talk about those beginning theatre classes. So, you're walking into this class for the first time, it's Day One, it's your beginning students, what's the first thing you do? Matt: First thing I do is hand out my syllabus because the syllabus is the contract between the teacher and the students, and it lays out the expectations for everyone. It also gives the rules of the classroom, it lays out the curriculum that we're going to follow, and basically tells the students what I expect from them, what this class is going to look like, and what I'm looking for out of them as students as the teacher. Lindsay: Okay. So, you think it's more important to do that kind of legwork first as opposed to, “Hey, let's play a game! Hey, let's do that!” Why do you choose to do it that way? Matt: There's always time to play games and setting that tone, Day One, is going to set the tone for the rest of the semester or the rest of the year, and it might not take the whole time to go over all of that material and we'll still have time to maybe play a game. But, when you start off playing a game, what you're telling the students is “this class is playtime” and that's what they'll take away from it. And, if you want your class to be more than playtime, then you need to set that expectation. Lindsay: Awesome. Thank you very much! Now I am talking to Jessica Stafford. Hello, Jessica! Jessica: Hi, Lindsay! How are you? Lindsay: I'm all right. Okay.

Two teacher directors – a high school teacher, Carolyn Greer, and a middle school teacher, Jessica Stafford – and they both put out productions of my play, Cobweb Dreams, at exactly the same time and we're going to talk about how so many of the elements in both shows were similar -- some identical, you know, the same set, for example. Of course, the same script, and yet the two shows that came out of their rehearsal process were so completely different. Character interpretation, okay? Where does it come from? How can you encourage your students to develop their own characters? Lots of great stuff, plus a little, you know, a looming tornado – that always adds some action. Let's get to it. Lindsay:  Hello, everybody! Welcome to the podcast. Well, I have to tell you, I'm in a very unique situation right now. I don't usually – well, actually, that's a lie, too – that's the one thing you're not supposed to talk about in, like, podcasts is the weather because nobody cares about the weather where you are… except that we, I am currently in Owensboro, Kentucky, and I have Carolyn Greer here. Hello, Carolyn. Carolyn:  Hi! Lindsay:  And I have Jessica Stafford here. Jessica: Hi! Lindsay: And we are in Jessica's house because it has a basement because there is a tornado! There's a tornado warning which is the better? Which is the worst one? Respondent:  We have a watch. Lindsay: We have a watch. Respondent:  With a very good possibility of a warning. Lindsay: Awesome. So, like… Respondent:  Week after snow's melted. Lindsay: We have the weather channel on as the red area is flashing and I'm here because Carolyn and Jessica – Carolyn at the high school and Jessica at the middle school – are premiering a play of mine, Cobweb Dreams. We have a high school version and a middle school version which I think is very exciting. Respondent:  It is. Lindsay: And, when we first started this, you guys were going to combine and it was going to be a combined show. And what happened? Why do we get two shows? Carolyn:  We started out with the idea that I was going to direct, the high school teacher, me – Carolyn – so whatever. I was going to direct and Jessica was going to assistant direct and we were going to partner and she was going to do a lot of the tech. But, when we went into the audition process, there was a lot of talent. Lindsay: When you emailed me about this, you said over a hundred kids had tried out. Respondents:  Yes. Jessica:  Probably 120? Carolyn:  In the beginning, yeah. And there was just a lot of talent on both sides and we knew that meant everybody was talking about it and saying, “We don't want to understudy. We don't want to do that sort of thing, but that's turning away a lot of, really turning away a lot of middle school talent that deserve to be seen on that stage in those roles.” Jessica:  Because we talked about doing two ensembles, we talked about having a live forest using the kids as the forest, also that the forest really had those ears, but we realized there was no way to really showcase my kids that could also handle the roles and I looked at Carolyn and I just kind of took a deep breath and I said, “Okay. Well, here's my deal. If you will handle the directing,
