(AURN News) — You could possibly receive a stimulus check from money saved through federal spending cuts made by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). President Donald Trump endorsed the initiative while speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One. "I love it, a twenty percent dividend, so to speak, for the money that we're saving by going after the waste and fraud and abuse and all the other things that are happening. I think it's a great idea," Trump said.  So how much could you receive? “Could be a lot... I mean, if it's twenty percent, it would give back a lot of money to the taxpayer, and also would give an incentive for the taxpayer to go out and report things to us where we can save money." DOGE, headed by Elon Musk, revealed significant wasteful spending in a recent post on X. "Schools have spent nearly $200B of COVID-Relief funds with little oversight or impact on students," the department posted. "$393K to rent out a Major League Baseball stadium, $86K in Caesars Palace hotel rooms, $60k in swimming pool passes, and even an ice cream truck. All of this money was drawn with zero documentation." The proposal comes as part of DOGE's broader mission to identify and eliminate what it calls inefficient federal spending. We've become deeply familiar with stimulus checks in the last few years, but what isn't clear is what affect these transfers may have on elections. Could stimulus checks be enough for citizens to change their votes to the party handing out the money and if so, is this a way for politicians to buy votes?Northwestern Professor of economics Silvia Vannutelli explores these questions in a paper titled “The Political Economy of Stimulus Transfers”. She looks at stimulus payments in Italy in 2014 and uncovers some surprising findings. Not only did these transfers appear to “purchase” some votes, but the effect seem to persist into the future.

The current Congress is not going to provide another stimulus check. The last payment, authorized by the American Rescue Plan Act, was passed along party line votes through a special process called reconciliation. There is no further opportunity to pass legislation this way until after the election, and there is not broad enough support to get a bill through that would authorize a fourth payment. Your best chance for a fourth stimulus check is to get one from your state. Almost half of states across the U.S. have issued payments or will soon do so. The rules for when you become eligible vary depending where you live, so check with local officials to find out if a payment is due.

With the midterm elections coming up in just about 80 days, states around the nation are sending out a new round of stimulus checks. These checks are being billed as “inflation relief money”—but trying to fight inflation by giving out cash is like trying to put out a fire by pouring gasoline on it.
