Fox's Melrose Place was intended to be an introspective drama about young adult life in 1990s L.A. But by Season 2, the show leaned into its soapy elements, with ever-shifting love triangles, backstabbing office rivalries, and more than a few iconic villains stealing babies, faking pregnancies, and even blowing up the apartment complex. At its height, the show reached nearly 15 million viewers, and its young and restless stars were EVERYWHERE. The show ended on a whimper in 1999, and had a mediocre CW revival in 2009. But for this Patreon-sponsored episode, we're going to back Melrose, as the Great Pop Culture Debate seeks to determine the Best Melrose Place Character. Characters discussed: Sydney Andrews, Lexi Sterling, Jane Mancini, Jo Reynolds, Dr. Michael Mancini, Billy Campbell, Megan Lewis, Taylor McBride, Amanda Woodward, Jennifer Mancini, Brooke Armstrong, Jake Taylor, Dr. Kimberly Shaw, Dr. Peter Burns, Matt Fielding, Alison Parker. Join host Eric Rezsnyak, Patreon sponsor Bob Erlenback, and Special Guest Stars Courtney Fay and Todd Rezsnyak as they discuss 16 of the most notorious residents of 4616 Melrose Place. I'm wanting something from art, which I think is much deeper, is a re-imagination of what it means to be human. I feel like we've instrumentalized and trivialized art and actually lost its capacity to expand our thesis of how we imagine ourselves and the world around us. I asked that question because the economy that we've created around art may have actually distorted its capacity to disturb us and to challenge our imagination of selves, which I think is probably at the root of the crisis that we face, a much deeper structural challenge of pretty much how we imagine ourselves and how we imagine our relationship with the world and every route. - Indy Johar, March 20, 2024, conscient podcast e163On March 20, 2024 I had the privilege and pleasure of hosting a conversation on ‘how art can help defeat defeatism' with colleagues from the Transition Innovation Group, an inclusive and generative space for active consideration of societal transition, co-hosted by Michelle Baldwin and Taryn Lucas with the transformation team at Community Foundation of Canada. This group of social innovators meets every two weeks on Zoom and is dedicated to collectively reimagining an equitable and integrated view of the infrastructures needed for long-term societal transition for future generations. In other words, making the world a better place.I've been part of the group since its early days and we often speak about the transformative power of art and culture : art as a form of social innovation. So what you're about to hear is a 50 minute conversation between 20 or so participants from this group. You might know some of them. Present at this session were (and I hope I've not forgotten anyone) : Abdul Walid Azizi, Arlene Macdonald, Barbara Leckie, Carly Goodman, Cheryll Case, Emily Mercy, Graham Singh, Ian Prinsloo, Indy Johar, Jo Reynolds, Joanne Kviring, Laura Cozzi, Lesley Southwick-Trask, Louise Adongo, Malobi Elueme, Michelle Baldwin, Nishan Chelvachandran, Shannon Litzenberger, Stephen Huddart, Taryn Lucas and myself as facilitator (along with Michelle Baldwin who gave a hand when my computer stopped working for a few moments and I continued on my iphone). You'll hear responses to four questions : Is writer Rebecca Solnit right in saying that ‘fighting defeatism is also climate work'?How can art and culture help those who are ‘frightened by the ecological crisis'?How has art helped you personally overcome difficult moments in your social innovation work and what artworks do you recommend to your peers? How can social innovation projects and institutions better integrate artists and cultural workers in their work?Note: Abdul Walid Azizi's response was inaudible in the recording therefore he wrote a similar statement that I have added as a voiceover in this recording. Thanks to Walid for doing this. I appreciate his point about 'viewing art as both a language of representation and a collective memory of society underlines its importance in strengthening the relationship between the individual and society. However, in our society, which is increasingly dominated by material and monetary values, art seems to be on the verge of being sidelined. Nevertheless, one way to keep the arts alive is by incorporating them into different societal initiatives.'As you'll hear many interesting and unresolved issues were raised at this session such as : The notion of permanency with art and how that relates to defeatism and our sense of time constructs and legacy. How do we rebuild the permission space for deeply philosophical art that challenges the core of our being ? Will we recognize art when it shows up that reframes mindsets and how do we measure success ? Life is art. It changes without breaking and allows us to break open and break in and break through without breaking us.What is it that we expect an artist or artists to do? What is the result of their work? And if they do that, are we willing to pay them?I think there's something really important in this conversation where we move beyond the idea of transaction based payment for art. I don't think art is a transaction and it operates across and beyond transactions to an economy of care and entanglements.I suspect that we'll have another session on art and social innovation again soon. Wisconsin banks are signaling caution as we get started in a new year, but these bankers are still a lot more optimistic than they were ahead of 2023. Every six months, the Wisconsin Bankers Association surveys Wisconsin bank CEOs on economic conditions. Last year at this time, three-quarters of the respondents predicted the economy would worsen. Today, that number is less than half. WBA President Rose Oswald Poels says some of the positive economic signs are that inflation and interest rate hikes are slowing. However, the red flags for banks are similar reasons -- inflation and interest rates remain elevated. What should customers know? She explains to Stephanie Hoff that Wisconsin's community banks are financially sound, profitable, and diversified. They also have the liquidity to lend.It may be hard to think of warm summer days and flashing carnival lights while facing snow and freezing temperatures, but members of the fair community recently gathered in Wisconsin Dells for the annual Wisconsin Association of Fairs Convention. Charitee Seebecker visited with Jo Reynolds, International Association of Fairs and Expo chair, about the changing landscape of fairs across the country and globally. Bang! That's the way traders reacted to the World Ag Supply/Demand report issued on Friday from USDA - like they were shot! John Heinberg, market advisor with Total Farm Marketing in West Bend breaks down some of the key elements that hit the market hard on Friday, and continue to impact numbers today. The corn estimates were devastating to the market and Heinberg says there's no real easy or comfortable way for the farmer to react.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
It may be hard to think of warm summer days and flashing carnival lights while facing snow and freezing temperatures, but members of the fair community recently gathered in Wisconsin Dells for the annual Wisconsin Association of Fairs Convention. Jo Reynolds, International Association of Fairs and Expo chair says, "It's challenging to compare pre-COVID times to now, but what we're witnessing is a resurgence in the strength of fairs, with sponsors returning." Despite challenges like increased food costs and travel constraints for carnivals, the strength of fairs is returning. Visitors are eager to experience the hands-on, in-person joy of fairs after a virtual 2020. When comparing Wisconsin to fairs in other parts of the world, Reynolds says what stands out most is Wisconsin's strong agricultural focus. "Wisconsin, with its emphasis on agriculture education and specialty crops, stands out as an active state. The dedication of leaders like Jamie Buttke has been instrumental in making Wisconsin a standout in the industry."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Hailed as the first full-time female firefighter in the UK, Britain, Jo joined Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service in 1982 at just 17. With the world watching, she was determined never to be the weakest link. Using determination and inner strength to overcome prejudice, she proved that women could make great firefighters. Jo joins Lee this week to talk about her groundbreaking, empowering story, and what we can all learn about breaking barriers in order to achieve more and change the world for the better. KEY TAKEAWAYS Sometimes, when the things we want aren't available, we must look elsewhere for opportunities, even though these opportunities may sound wild at the time. When you start a job or new branch of your career, all we really want is not to stand out. Trailblazers like Jo stand out naturally, which increases the pressure immeasurably. When we stand out from the pack in obvious ways, the best thing to do is to set an example and get through the work, showing that we are capable, despite people's preconceptions. Belief in ourselves comes through proving to ourselves that we can be more than we think. Remove doubts and look ahead. BEST MOMENTS 'I didn't know what I was getting into, to be honest' 'I'm an independently-minded girl' 'I was wearing a man's outfit, which was a lovely look for a 17 year-old' 'I don't fear anything' VALUABLE RESOURCES Business Problems Solved Podcast Jo Reynolds - https://www.josephine-reynolds.com Jo Reynolds Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/SamuiJoReynolds/ https://www.facebook.com/FireWomanJo1 Jo Reynolds Twitter - https://twitter.com/FireWomanJo1 Jo Reynolds Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/fire_woman_josephine/ Jo Reynolds LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/atzeropercent/ Email - josephinereynolds815@gmail.com Unique design Rebel Slogan T's - https://firewoman.teemill.com/ Signed Author Copies of Fire Woman - https://fire-woman.sumup.link/ ABOUT THE HOST For the last 15 years, I have been a multi-sector internal or external business improvement consultant, building the improved capability of individuals, teams and businesses. When Michael volunteers Jane to the decorating committee for an upcoming mixer for the hospital interns, she's relieved to meet and make friends with fellow doctor's wife Liz. And what do you know -- Michael is also getting pally with Liz's husband Scott, a star pediatrician. Jane finds nothing amiss in the elaborate story Liz offers for how she got a shiner on her right eye, but is less able to explain away finger-shaped bruises on both of Liz's arms. Michael, however, refuses to entertain the idea that his new buddy is a domestic abuser, particularly since Michael is less popular than he is and unwilling to slow his own ascent at the hospital by making accusations he thinks are unfounded. The complex gets a new resident -- Jo Reynolds, an aspiring photographer who's just arrived from New York. While she's slightly vague about what has brought her to town, depending on who asks, Jo and Alison bond over a temperamental dryer in the laundry room, and Jo and Jake have an instant attraction, even before he shows up at her door in nothing but a towel.
