Prop 32 fails to pass

It was close, but Proposition 32, to raise California's minimum wage, has been defeated by the voters. After two weeks of counting the latest-arriving ballots, the ballot measure has lost by about one and a half percent, statewide. That came as a surprise to some, given California's liberal reputation, but not to others, given the mood about the economy and anger over high prices. The low turnout by Democrats also hurt, because many voters stayed home who might have been sympathetic to increasing the minimum wage. Proposition 32 would have raised the statewide wage to 18 dollars over the next year. For more, KCBS Radio anchors Patti Reising and Bret Burkhart, along with KCBS insider Doug Sovern, were joined by Joe Sanberg, the entrepreneur and anti-poverty advocate who was the chief proponent of Proposition 32. This is The State of California.

Committed to Clean Money: A Conversation with Joe Sanberg, Co-Founder of Aspiration Joe Sanberg is a progressive business leader, anti-poverty advocate, and co-founder of Aspiration, a no-fee, socially-conscious financial firm that keeps its customers' money away from fossil fuels and private prisons. As a steward of the movement to pass the Earned Income Tax Credit for low-income families in California, Joe founded CalEITC4Me, one of the state's largest anti-poverty programs, which has put more than $10 billion back in the pockets of working families. He successfully led the charge to expand eligibility for the program to low-wage, undocumented workers, who had previously been excluded from the tax credit. Then-California Gov. Jerry Brown's top adviser Nancy McFadden called Joe the “spark” behind the state's efforts to execute the new program. Joe also leads Working Hero PAC, a people-powered political organization focused on electing progressive candidates who will fight for affordable housing, good-paying jobs, a sustainable future, and accessible healthcare for all. With scholarships and financial aid, he was able to get into Harvard, and after he graduated magna cum laude, he sought out the highest paying job he could get, at a major private equity group — so he could provide for his mother. But after accomplishing that mission and succeeding on Wall Street, he decided to devote the rest of his career to the cause of ending poverty, not just for his mother, but for all Americans. Confidence in many institutions has been falling – Congress, churches, and, financial institutions. More than 90% of Americans surveyed do not trust the Financial Services industry to have their best interests in mind. And, it’s no wonder. When I say Financial Services, what images come to mind? For many people, they think of scenes from the financial crisis that began in 2008. They can see massive layoffs, failing businesses and millions of foreclosed homes. What they don’t picture is, financial institutions reaping the consequences of their misbehavior. There were no Bernie Madoff-style perp walks or massive fines. Barclay’s bought Lehman Brothers. Bank of America bought Merrill Lynch. Wells Fargo took Wachovia. And the band played on. For many investors, the game seems rigged to serve a small number of financially affluent people. In this episode of Social Entrepreneur, you’ll meet Joe Sanberg. When Joe was nearing graduation from high school, the bank foreclosed on the mortgage of his parents’ home. The home that Joe grew up in was suddenly no longer theirs. But Joe was one of the lucky ones. He was exceptionally bright and was able to get into Harvard University. Just over a year ago, Joe and his partner, Andrei Cherny launched Aspiration, a new kind of financial institution. Here are a few ways in which Aspiration is different: You can choose to “pay what is fair” where you choose the fee. Fees are voluntary. Aspiration offers a checking account that pays 1% interest that has no service fees and no ATM fees. Money Magazine named it the best checking account. Aspiration offers a mutual fund, Aspiration Flagship Fund with a $500 minimum buy-in. You can also take your money out of any of Aspiration’s funds on any day without penalty. The Flagship Fund is structured to reduce volatility, making it a comfortable investment for more middle class and younger investors. They also offer Aspiration Redwood Fund, which is a way for young and middle class investors to access sustainable, impact investing. The Redwood Fund negatively screens out companies that go against the sustainability goals of the fund, such as fossil fuel companies and weapons manufacturers. It also positively screens companies that adhere to the recommendations of the Sustainable Accounting Standards Board. And, on top of all of that, Aspiration donates 10% of their revenues to charity. Keep in mind that, building a financial services company requires a massive amount of working capital, in a complex, competitive and highly regulated industry. So, this is no easy task. How is Aspiration doing? Well, they are doubling the number of customers about every six weeks. Joe Sanberg is an investor in a few of the social I’ve profiled recently (Aspiration and Bright Funds) and so I wanted to learn more about him. Sanberg told me about the start to his career, “I grew up in a middle class family and by the time I was leaving for college at Harvard, the house I had grown up in was being foreclosed. I’m sobered by the staggering amount of luck and chance that came together in my life. I never could have imagined it.” This experience guided his philosophy on life and business. “I don’t think we should leave to luck and chance the kinds of opportunities in life that people get to enjoy. I’m determined to build companies and champion public policies that systematically create more opportunity for people because I can’t bear thinking that I didn’t do everything I could to ensure that the kid today who is like I was does not have to rely on luck and chance to have a full life.” The challenges of his early life helped frame Sanberg’s thinking as well. “Like so many others in my generation, I was raised by my mother. The absence of an active father when I was a kid affected me like it has affected many others. You have to become more self-reliant at a younger age as you figure out how to be a responsible adult. Fortunately, my maternal grandfather was a very active presence in my life and was a great male role model.” When I asked Sanberg the secret of his success, he responded, “I think success comes from being authentic so my answer involves revealing what constitutes my core as a person. My faith in God is the biggest factor in how I live my life and who I am. Tikkun Olam is a Hebrew phrase that means to heal the world. I think we all have a responsibility to find our part in healing the world. Like all of us, I’ve often fallen short of my responsibility but my aspiration is to do my best to live up to Tikkun Olam.” Please consider whether a friend or colleague might benefit from this piece and, if so, share it.
