John D. Hancock is an American stage and film director, producer and writer. He is perhaps best known for his work on Bang the Drum Slowly, Weeds and Prancer. Hancock's theatrical work includes direction of both classic and contemporary plays, from Shakespeare to Saul Bellow. He also directed several films with his wife actress and screenwriter Dorothy Tristan. Hancock worked closely with Tristan on a number of projects including the aborted first version of Jaws 2 in 1977 (which Tristan co-wrote with Howard Sackler) as well as California Dreaming, Weeds, A Piece of Eden, Suspended Animation and The Looking Glass. Dorothy Tristan passed away on January 8th 2023.Support the show
The first ever triple-bill episode, as voted for by Patrons of this podcast for Sequeltember, on the history and legacy of Jaws 2, Jaws 3-D & Jaws: The Revenge ! The sequels to the previous episode on Jaws. Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the water. JAWS 2 was wanted pretty much immediately after the success of Jaws, but Steven Spielberg wasn't interested in reprising his directorial role. The director they did find, John D. Hancock, was fired after a month, and the production had already spent huge amounts of time and money. Once Jeannot Szwarc came on board, tensions with star Roy Scheider would escalate. Not that Scheider wanted to come back...JAWS 3-D. The third dimension is terror, but it wasn't always terror. Famously, Jaws 3 started life as a National Lampoon spoof, called Jaws 3 People 0, to be directed by Joe Dante, and co-written by John Hughes. When Universal quashed that idea, it was decided to capitalise on the rise of threequels with 3D, to give Jaws 3 the edge. Jaws 3-D would be filmed at SeaWorld Orlando, and would be the first 3-D film to use ArriVision, but the increased costs meant cutting back on visual effects... JAWS: THE REVENGE. This time, it's personal. Or at least it was for Sid Sheinberg. Universal desperately needed a financial boost after a string of box office disappointments in 1986, and he decided to revive the Jaws franchise one final time. He would give director Joseph Sargent complete creative control, and Sheinberg's wife Lorraine Gary would come out of retirement to reprise her role as grieving widow Ellen Brody, in return for an effects-heavy shark movie to be released in just nine months time. It would be set in the Bahamas, feature triple Oscar-nominee Michael Caine, and have its ending changed after its US release. Trigger warning for this part of the episode for the tragic story of child actor Judith Barsi, which references child abuse and murder. I would love to hear your thoughts on Jaws 2, Jaws 3-D & Jaws: The Revenge !CONTACT.... John D. Hancock has directed everything from critically acclaimed theatrical productions, to award winning films, to made-for-TV movies, to producing his own movies in LaPorte, IN. His Academy Award nominated movies, Sticky My Fingers... Fleet My Feet and Bang the Drum Slowly both showcased his ability to ground the action in the reality of the film while humanizing even the vilest of characters. His 1971 cult classic horror pic, Let's Scare Jessica to Death continues to pull in new fans from all over the globe. John talks to me about his life, his work in Off Broadway theaters in NYC, his stint in Hollywood, and why he came back to Indiana. We talk about how music and directing relate to one another. He tells me stories about Charles Durning, Tyne Daly, and Michael Moriarty. We talk about him being fired from Jaws 2 only to be brought in to take over on final production of Wolfen. We commiserate on the many pitfalls of widowhood and how directing his late wife, Dorothy Tristan, in her last, deeply autobiographical film, which she also wrote, The Looking Glass, helped them both come to terms with the inevitable. ...or better yet, let's get super seventies spooky with this hidden gem! Watching the titular Jessica unravel at the hands of a spectral vampire entity in the countryside of damp New England may have been enough to make us giddy, but sprinkle in the seventies indie vibes that scratch that particular filmmaker itch and you've got a real veritable feast at our fangs. Having said that, there are some flaws that keep this one from being perfect, but still earn it a double “rent” from the guys. Do yourself a favor and turn out the lights, curl up by the fire, and get a hold of a copy of this moody beauty of a movie. Hey guys...you know what would be fun to do for a season finale and finale of the third annual Forgotten Horror? Let's Scare Jessica to Death!!! Get it? Because that's the movie that the Mikes are talking abou.....those boo's better be from ghosts!!! Mike Field and Mike Butler talk about the 1971 film, Let's Scare Jessica to Death, directed by John D. Hancock, who got the directing gig for Jaws 2 based on one of the scenes from this film...before he got himself fired from said big career opportunity. The Mikes will bring up that fact and more as they discuss what they thought of this film. From the odd way they present the vampires in the film, to the poor use of the supporting actors. Butler will lament that although the idea of the film is solid and the attempt at tackling themes of mental health within a horror film is admirable for a film from 1971, everything else is incredibly lackluster and handled in such a muddled way. Field will of course disagree with Butler and talk about his respect for a low budget film that goes so far and gets the director a shot at the big show; even if said director does blow it. Butler is probably wrong though, as this is one of Stephen King's favorite horror films. So grab your frog's breath and worm's wort, please don't eat the deadly nightshade to the left and right of you and prepare for Halloween as you listen to the finale to the third annual https://www.forgottenentertainment.com/ (Forgotten Horror)!
