The Brutalist, Strip-tease intégral. En salles le 12 février.

For better or worse, Bertrand Bonello's The Beast is one of the most memorable movies of 2024. A discombobulating sci-fi trip through time that stars Lea Seydoux and George Mackay, it explodes the kernel of loneliness at the center of Henry James' 1903 novella - The Beast in the Jungle - into something much more...perplexing.

To coincide with the release of his latest film The Beast (starring Léa Seydoux and George Mackay), writer/director Bertrand Bonello came on the podcast to talk about AI and technology, acting, connection, memory, music and perplexing cinema. It was an honour for Neil to talk filmmaking and cinema - taking in Eyes Wide Shut, David Lynch and Sunrise - for the podcast, as Neil and Dario are big admirers of Bonello's work and it's a privilege to have one of the world's most interesting contemporary filmmakers on the show. Highlights from the Episode: Perplexing Cinema: Bonello discusses his preference for films that engage viewers in active thought, asking questions rather than providing answers. Casting Insights: Learn about the challenges and triumphs of casting George McKay and the enigmatic Lea Seydoux, whose performances bring profound depth to the film. AI and Memory: The film's exploration of AI delves into the subjective nature of human memory and emotion, highlighting the inherent limitations of technology in capturing the human experience. Music as Narrative: Bonello's meticulous selection of music is more than an illustration—it's a narrative tool that enhances character and story. Cinematic Time: Discover how Bonello plays with time in his films, creating a fluid and immersive experience for the audience. The Beast is released by Vertigo Releasing on Friday May 31st in UK cinemas and marks the filmmaker's boldest and most cinematically adventurous film to date. It's one of the films of 2024 and The Cinematologists is proud to have welcomed Bertrand on the show to promote the film's release. Ep. 239: Bertrand Bonello on The Beast, Experimenting with AI, Crafting Melodrama, Reading Henry James, and more Welcome to The Last Thing I Saw, with your host, Nicolas Rapold. Bertrand Bonello's latest film The Beast has been melting minds with its time-skipping saga of star-crossed lovers and strangers played by Léa Seydoux and George Mackay. Inspired by a Henry James story, The Beast spans three different time periods and pairings: a married woman and a suitor in the 1910s (Belle Époque), an actress and a madman in 2010's California, and a woman facing a fateful choice in a not-too-distant future where artificial intelligence promises to remove individual trauma. I chatted with the restless French auteur (Nocturama, Saint Laurent) about the struggle for connection across these stories, being tempted by AI, directing Mackay and Seydoux, and more. The Beast is in theaters now, and Bonello's previous feature, Coma, will have its first U.S. theatrical run on May 17. In this episode of Girls On Film, Anna Smith talks about the recent Cinema for Gaza auction with two of the women behind the initiative, Helen Simmons and Julia Jackman, and she reviews some imminent releases with film critic Rhianna Dhillon and film journalist and programmer Cici Peng. First up Anna speaks with Rhianna Dhillon about Italian box-office hit C'è ancora domani or There's Still Tomorrow. They discuss the representation of domestic violence in this neorealist-style debut from Paola Cortellesi, and pick up on the film's surprisingly hopeful feel. Next up they discuss The Fall Guy, starring Ryan Gosling as a stunt-double and Emily Blunt as a blockbuster director, which is out in UK cinemas on 2 May 2024. A recent auction raised over £260,000 for Medical Aid for Palestinians or MAP, a charity currently working in Gaza to provide immediate medical aid to those in great need. The auction was an initiative led by film critics Hanna Flint, Leila Latif, and Sophie Monks Kaufman who teamed up with publicist Hannah Farr, and filmmakers Julia Jackman and Helen Simmons. Anna talks with Helen and Julia about the initiative, who also share some insights into the highest-earning lots, which included Annie Lennox's handwritten lyrics to 1983 hit Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This). Finally, Anna is joined by film journalist and programmer Cici Peng, who shares her thoughts on Rose Glass' Love Lies Bleeding, and Léa Seydoux's performance in the upcoming film The Beast. Cici also speaks about her recent archival work to create a programme of hidden gems at Queer East Festival, which showcases queer cinema from East and Southeast Asia and its diaspora. Another seven movies on the docket for Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy and a lot of variations on horror. Not so much with the third film from director Goran Stolevski that Steve suggests a look at (Housekeeping for Beginners). But Larry Fessenden crafts a werewolf metaphor for America (Blackout), there is a new giant spider film (Sting), Nicolas Cage's sons, at least, fighting hairy snapping creatures (Arcadian) for a few minutes plus Lea Seydoux on the lookout from unimaginable dread for over a century (The Beast) and a new Woody Allen film (Coup de Chance). Bertrand Bonello on The Beast

Last fall, Bertrand Bonello's latest, The Beast, was a thrilling highlight of both the festival circuit. The film is a loose, two-and-a-half-hour, time-and-space-jumping adaptation of Henry James's 1903 novella The Beast in the Jungle, in which a man refuses love, believing that he is destined for a catastrophe. In The Beast, a woman named Gabrielle (Léa Seydoux) is thwarted in her quest for romance with Louis (George MacKay) across three different historical periods by multiple catastrophes: in 1910, by the Great Flood of Paris; in 2014, by incel culture; and in 2024, by a world dominated by artificial intelligence in which people are purified of their traumatic memories. All this spells doom for love. It's an unpredictable and expansive film that brings together references from cinema, literature, art, and internet culture, into a movie that feels classical in its construction and, at the same time, extremely contemporary in its subject matter and narrative twists—a vision of what it feels like to be alive today. And boy, is it creepy! On today's Podcast, Film Comment Editor Devika Girish was joined by the director Bertrand Bonello to talk about the film, which arrives in theaters on Friday, April 5.

Eyes in the movie world turn to Berlin as its annual film showcase opens with a typically exciting roster, including the new release from French director André Téchiné starring Isabelle Huppert and Hafsia Herzi. Film critic Lisa Nesselson also tells us about a suitably surreal take on the master painter himself: “Daaaaaali!” is Quentin Dupieux's interpretation of the artist's unique persona. Meanwhile, Bertrand Bonello's latest film "The Beast" blends sci-fi and romance in a time-travelling jaunt that takes the central couple, played by Léa Seydoux and George MacKay, through two centuries. And we check out "Bob Marley: One Love", as the final years of the reggae star's life are revisited in a new biopic.

Using Henry James's haunting 1903 short story “The Beast in the Jungle” as his film's provocative inspiration, Bertrand Bonello (Nocturama, Coma) has created a dynamic and disturbing parable that jumps between three different time periods (1910, 2014, and 2044) and tells the story of a young woman (Léa Seydoux) who undergoes a surgical process to have her DNA—and therefore memories of all her past lives—removed. This week we're excited to present an archival conversation with Saint Laurent director Bertrand Bonello and cast members Gaspard Ulliel & Aymeline Valade. Bertrand Bonello's latest film, The Beast, will make its U.S. Premiere at the 61st New York Film Festival in this year's Main Slate. Saint Laurent, which had its North American premiere at the 52nd New York Film Festival in 2014, is a different kind of biopic, focusing on a particularly hedonistic time in the life of legendary fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent. The film playfully warps and obscures the passage of time, which results in a delirious viewing experience. Anchored by an enigmatic performance by Gaspard Ulliel, the fashion icon becomes a myth, a brand, and an avatar of his era. This conversation was moderated by NYFF Artistic Director Dennis Lim.
