In the winter of 1692, the village of Salem, Massachusetts found itself embroiled in a vicious witch hunt. A total of 185 people would ultimately be accused of witchcraft, resulting in the deaths of 14 women and 5 men. To commemorate the 333 anniversary of the Salem Witch Trials, Scary Stories for the Soul is releasing one episode a week in the month of February, following 10 of the accused. On this, the last episode of our Salem Witch Trials series, we will focus our attention on Martha Carrier, Ann Foster, and Lady Mary Phips. I discuss and review the classic thriller starring Walter Matthau 4/5
Dunnnh dun. Dunnnh dun. Never before had two notes provoked such terror as they did in JAWS, the 1975 classic that invented the summer blockbuster, catapulted Steven Spielberg to Hollywood legend status, and inspired generational trauma about water. Actor and recognizable famous person Timothy Simons joins us to talk about this classic shark tale, and we go long on Scheider, Dreyfuss, Shaw, and the career of journeyman director Joseph Sargent (?). Which member of the Blank Check crew would be least likely to get attacked by a shark? Obviously Ben, because he respects water. What the hell did Chief Brody think he was gonna do when he apprehended the shark - arrest it? Why isn't Griffin familiar with the concept of a ferry? We dare to ask these questions, just as the citizens of Amity dared to go into the water. We're taking a look at one of the most suspenseful crime dramas of the 1970s. Brandon is joined by lawyer and journalist, Matt Belenky, to discuss 1974's The Taking of Pelham One Two Three. Brandon and Matt praise the deliberately paced direction by Joseph Sargent. The movie perfectly mixed suspense with quirky comedy thanks to the script by Peter Stone. We also praise the performances from the ensemble cast including Walter Matthau, Robert Shaw, Martin Balsam, Jerry Stiller, Hector Elizondo and Earl Hindman.

Turen går til "New York, New York" i dagens 40 minutter lange episode af Moviebox VHS-podcast, hvor vi præsenterer tre forskellige fortolkninger af New Yorks betagende og brutale storbylandskab på VHS. Niels lægger ud med høj, klaustrofobisk kvalitet i 'The Taking of Pelham 123' (1974) af Joseph Sargent. The first ever triple-bill episode, as voted for by Patrons of this podcast for Sequeltember, on the history and legacy of Jaws 2, Jaws 3-D & Jaws: The Revenge ! The sequels to the previous episode on Jaws. Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the water. JAWS 2 was wanted pretty much immediately after the success of Jaws, but Steven Spielberg wasn't interested in reprising his directorial role. The director they did find, John D. Hancock, was fired after a month, and the production had already spent huge amounts of time and money. Once Jeannot Szwarc came on board, tensions with star Roy Scheider would escalate. Not that Scheider wanted to come back...JAWS 3-D. The third dimension is terror, but it wasn't always terror. Famously, Jaws 3 started life as a National Lampoon spoof, called Jaws 3 People 0, to be directed by Joe Dante, and co-written by John Hughes. When Universal quashed that idea, it was decided to capitalise on the rise of threequels with 3D, to give Jaws 3 the edge. Jaws 3-D would be filmed at SeaWorld Orlando, and would be the first 3-D film to use ArriVision, but the increased costs meant cutting back on visual effects... JAWS: THE REVENGE. This time, it's personal. Or at least it was for Sid Sheinberg. Universal desperately needed a financial boost after a string of box office disappointments in 1986, and he decided to revive the Jaws franchise one final time. He would give director Joseph Sargent complete creative control, and Sheinberg's wife Lorraine Gary would come out of retirement to reprise her role as grieving widow Ellen Brody, in return for an effects-heavy shark movie to be released in just nine months time. It would be set in the Bahamas, feature triple Oscar-nominee Michael Caine, and have its ending changed after its US release. Trigger warning for this part of the episode for the tragic story of child actor Judith Barsi, which references child abuse and murder. Four armed men hijack a New York City subway car and demand a $1 million dollar ransom for the passengers - they are lead by Robert Shaw's Mr. Blue. (That's his codename among the other hijackers) In response, the city's police try to figure out how to respond - they are lead by transit cop Lieutenant Garber played by Walter Matthau. And what results is a tense action-packed standoff between cops and criminals in a movie which was so influential that it inspired two star-studded remakes in the decades since....including the most recent 2009 remake starring Denzel Washington and John Travolta. The stacked cast for this original version also includes Martin Balsam, Hector Elizondo, and James Broderick - it was directed by Joseph Sargent. On this episode Phillip and his cousin Chip talk about 1974's The Taking of Pelham One Two Three directed by Joseph Sargent. They start the show by paying respect to Tom Sizemore and Topal who've recently passed away. Then Phillip gives the general information about this movie. Chip talks about an actor that he noticed in a small role, and Phillip gives a brief biography on Julius Harris who played the Chief Inspector. It's then time to hear from the listeners, from Instagram and Twitter, in the Listener Opinions segment. Chip and Phillip then discuss the great parts, the plot holes, and the acting in this extraordinary film. Phillip reads some more facts and then they rate the movie. After rating the movie Phillip gives his Phil's Film of the Week; Amphibian Man (1962). It's then time for the randomizer to pick the next movie, and it does, The Mighty Peking Man (1977). Phillip has seen this movie, but Chip has not. It should be a fun conversation just like this one. Thanks for listening. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/makingtarantinothepodcast/message

Episode 313: The Crew's ending their Jaws retrospective with Joseph Sargent's Jaws: The Revenge. This time it's personal… a shark decides to follow the Brody family to the Bahamas and pick em off one by one. Were the other sharks in the franchise related to this shark, or did this shark have enough of this speciesist family? Who knows, this film is more interested in a Lorraine Gary and Michael Caine love subplot than reasoning out a silly explanation for why any of this is happening. Some of the Crew dislike it and some think it's the best sequel. They discusses… If you like our music intro, head over to Soundcloud and hear more amazing music from aquariusweapon. Woodard co-starred in Lifetime's hit remake of Steel Magnolias, for which she was nominated for Screen Actors Guild and Emmy Awards, and won a NAACP Image Award for her performance as Ouiser. Most recently, she appeared in the acclaimed drama 12 Years A Slave, directed by Steve McQueen, and Marvel's Captain America: Civil War, plus New Line's Annabelle, and the Netflix Original feature Juanita, as the title character. As part of her work on the Committee, Woodard adopted several high poverty and under-performing public schools around the country. She is an active advocate for the arts in education, largely through her work on the Committee's "Turnaround Arts" initiative, which was launched in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Education and the White House Domestic Policy Council to narrow the achievement gap and increase student engagement through the arts. Now based in the Kennedy Center, Turnaround Arts is spurring the creativity, expanding the scholarship, nurturing the citizenship, and introducing possibility in the lives of 50,000 kids, while turning around 80 formerly 'at risk' schools nationwide. She says acting is her profession, but feels everyone's real job "is to learn how to love each other - in our households, in our communities," she has said. "We do that by working for justice."Woodard is unfazed by the glitz of celebrity, but is grateful for its opportunity to "get her to the mic". She remains fueled by the values she learned growing up in Tulsa. In November 2014, she was inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame, and took the opportunity to credit her parents in her acceptance remarks. Her parents, always mindful of the hardship of others, "planted the seed of humanity" in her as a child. "They allowed me artistic as well as personal freedom. They didn't say 'go out and conquer' or 'go out and accumulate,' they just said 'Go. Do it. Be it. Be yourself. Fill yourself all the way up, Alfre, and never, ever forget your neighbor.'"

When Star Trek's first regular episode after the pilot was in pre-production, the director Joseph Sargent noticed a glaring problem. All of the seats that ringed the futuristic bridge of the Enterprise, including the communications chair, were to be filled with white, male actors. Sargent reflexively felt it was wrong that Black people should not … Continue reading "The Enterprise is not a White Space: why minority representation on Star Trek was so radical and risky in the 1960s"
It's too easy to forget what a character location can actually be... On this episode we sit down with filmmaker, film programmer Bruce Goldstein to talk about his new short film 'Pelham One Two Three: NYC Underground' which is playing as a part of the 'Streets of New York' section in the TCM Classic Film Festival which kicked off today and runs all weekend on the TCM Channel and HBO Max. Goldstein’s latest film, 'Pelham One Two Three: NYC Underground' is a humorous short essay about one of his favorite New York movies. The film spotlights Joseph Sargent’s quintessential 1974 thriller 'The Taking of Pelham One Two Three', starring Walter Matthau and Robert Shaw, in which four armed man hijack a New York City subway train, holding seventeen passengers hostage. The setting for hundreds of Hollywood classics, this collection highlights the Big Apple in key films from different eras and includes a special short subject for each film produced by film historian and New Yorker Bruce Goldstein. Includes The Naked City (1948), Speedy (1928) and The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974). We talked with Bruce about 'Pelham One Two Three' the unique nature of New York as a big screen character and so very much more...
The two films under review today - one from 1974 directed by Joseph Sargent, the other from 2009 and directed by Tony Scott - have something in common, beyond them sharing a plot and title. Both, in very distinct ways, act as monuments to the cinematic styles of the period they come from. Sargent's film is grimy and unglamorous, with an unmistakably '70s score. Scott's film is full of rolling cars, hyperactive editing and John Travolta. Which one will come out on top and can Tony Scott enter the rarefied ranks of the Remazing? This episode we cover a classic action thriller and its god awful remake along side a very obscure and majestic Thai art drama. The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974) dir. by Joseph Sargent, an absolute classic thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The Taking of Pelham 123 (2009) dir. by Tony Scott, a questionable remake with a star studded cast and an odd choice of cinematography. Uncle Boonme Who Can Recall His Past Lives (2010) dir. by Apichatpong Weerasethakul, a unique and dreamlike journey of the end of a mans life and the weight of his past regrets.

Together, they explore the 1987 suspense sequel Jaws: The Revenge, directed by Joseph Sargent and starring Lorraine Gary, Lance Guest, Mario van Peebles and Michael Caine, and discover voodoo curses, amateur icthyology, Sharkula, Jeremy's favourite Bible joke and what the film would be like without a shark in it.
The story behind Joseph Sargent's THE TAKING OF PELHAM ONE TWO THREE (1974).
This week on Total Movie Recall, things get grim and a little too close to 2020 reality for comfort. Definitely don't watch this movie if you're fresh out of rehab, which Ryan can tell you all about. The future is bleak, but if it's also as ruggedly handsome as Clive Owen is and has the greatest single-take of all time, it might not be so bad. This is also one of the greatest movies of all time, just to be clear about it. Children of Men (2006) d. The Cinemondo Tranya tasting party - along with our Special Guest Mark Maddox, beams over to the Fesarius to explore THE CORBOMITE MANEUVER. I think it’s pretty clear that this is one of the true classics of the series. Great writing, directing and fantastic performances by the whole crew. It was the first of the regular episodes to be filmed (aside from the 2 pilot episodes) and it really does a great job of introducing the Enterprise and the crew. The character interplay is great, and the story is one of the very best alien encounters episodes. Kirk and crew take a big chance with a vasty superior alien entity known as Commander Balok, whose distorted and scowling visage reminds Mr. Spock of his beloved father. The Brody family, not led by the widow Ellen Brody (Lorraine Gary), continues to experience shark attacks, starting with when Ellen's younger son, Sean. While mourning the loss, Ellen visits her other son, Michael (Lance Guest), in the Bahamas, where she meets the rascally Hoagie Newcombe (Michael Caine). Meanwhile, the same shark that got her boy appears off the coast of the island, and Ellen has to take it down or never escape the shark's wrath. Mario Van Peebles also appears in this Joseph Sargent film so bad that it killed off the Jaws franchise once and for all.

Riding public transportation can be scary enough these days but you don't want to add money hungry terrorists to that list. That's the premise for this action, crime, drama, The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974). The original film by director Joseph Sargent stars Walter Matthau, Robert Shaw, and Martin Balsam. The 2009 remake by director Tony Scott also had an amazing cast with Denzel Washington, John Travolta, Luis Guzman, and John Turturro. The Corbomite Maneuver was the tenth episode of Star Trek's debut season to air, though the first to be produced. In this episode Gerry and Iain cower at the sight of a scary baby and question whether Kirk's tactics were effective enough to name an episode after them. When the Enterprise is forced to destroy an unidentified space cube that bars its way, Kirk resolves to press forward with the mission, leading to an encounter with the giant spacecraft Fesarius under the control of Balok (voiced by Ted Cassidy). After surviving a potentially deadly stand-off Kirk offers aid to his apparently stricken rival, earning his trust and respect. Visiting Balok's vessel Kirk, McCoy and Lt. Bailey (Anthony Call) are shocked to find he is not the creature they expected, but a small, child-like humanoid (Clint Howard, voiced by Walker Edmiston) with whom they can establish a connection. The Corbomite Maneuver was directed by Joseph Sargent. The episode was written by Jerry Sohl, who would later contribute two further stories to the series. This was Sargent's only episode of Star Trek, but he is credited with creating Spock's iconic 'Fascinating' response, from which our podcast takes its name. In this episode Gerry and Iain considered Balok's true intentions and the impact of Kirk's dietary restrictions. The discussion continues in the comments below and please keep in touch with us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram where we're @trekpodcast. You can listen to the show here on the website, on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, Pocket Casts, TuneIn, Stitcher, Google or wherever you find your podcasts. The Corbomite Maneuver was released in 1966. It is 50 minutes long and originally aired on the NBC network. It can be viewed on CBS All Access in the United states, Netflix in the UK and is available on DVD and Blu Ray in other countries, including a comprehensive remastered set of all three seasons released by Paramount Home Entertainment.
Legendary cinematographer Don Morgan shot “Used Cars” and “I Wanna Hold Your Hand,” with Robert Zemeckis; Steven Spielberg's “1941,” and John Carpenter's “Starman” and “Christine.” Don also filmed the iconic aerial scenes in “Seven” for director David Fincher and talks about his long television career with director Joseph Sargent.

THE MILKSHAKE BOOM returns this week with Robert's movie selection: 'White Lightning'! This 1973 Burt Reynolds 'hick-sploitation' flick about murder and moonshine co-stars Ned Beatty and is directed by Joseph Sargent!

We built a super computer with a mind of its own and now we must fight it for the world! This week at The B-Movie Clubhouse I thought we would go with a supercomputer goes crazy film so I picked Colossus: The Forbin Project from 1970. The film was Directed by Joseph Sargent and stars […]
