Corbin and Ellis are joined by MATEA, Portland's Elvira (Letterboxd here, subscribe today!), for a conversaion about the early indie horror touchstone "Let Scare Jessica to Death." Topics include: the shifting uses of mental health care as a literary device, the bitter end of the sixties playing out on screen, the thin line between madness and a vampire invading your mind, and the movie's wild sound design. Corbin reccomends a movie. Matt reccomends another movie. Matea reccomends yet another movie. Illeana Douglas is an avid student of the movies who grew up, stepped onto a set and entered the big screen of her childhood dreams. Her deep interest and knowledge of film legend and lore provided her with rich opportunities to engage in meaningful conversations with the stars and directors she has imagined meeting and then encountered along her way, including Robert De Niro, Robert Redford, Marlon Brando, Martin Scorsese, Roddy McDowall and so many more. With a rare ability to manifest full circle moments, Illeana has worked with the two men who upended her childhood, Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda. Their film, Easy Rider had inspired her father to check out of suburbia and into a hippy commune, leaving the family financially destitute. That struggle is documented in her award winning book, I Blame Dennis Hopper. As a starving actress, Illeana went to work for a publicist in the Brill Building and years later, starred in Grace of My Heart, about songwriters in the Brill Building. Her fascination with her lost suburban childhood led her to write a new book called, Connecticut in the movies, WHILE she was restoring her own Connecticut dream home, a similar desperate effort to that of Mr. Blandings. Connecticut's role in American movies has evolved over the years from that of a metaphor for healthy, country living (Holiday Inn, Christmas In Connecticut) to a representation of our post-war suburban shift, the strain the work commute placed on marriages and the racism found in planned communities, (The Man In The Gray Flannel Suit, Gentleman's Agreement) to a depiction of dark suburbia and societal collapse (The Swimmer, The Ice Storm), to horror and dystopia. (The Stepford Wives, Let's Scare Jessica To Death.) Illeana, is a complete delight and she joins us for an in depth discussion about all things movie and many things Connecticut. Plus, elections are coming and Myra Page and Joan Bowman are here from Commit To Democracy to teach us how we can all do more than just vote this critical election season!Path Points of Interest:Illeana DouglasConnecticut in the Movies: From Dream Houses To Dark SuburbiaI Blame Dennis Hopper: And Other Stories Lived From In And Out Of The MoviesIlleana Douglas on WikipediaIlleana Douglas on IMDBIlleana Douglas on InstagramMedia Path PodcastGift of DemocracyCommit To DemocracyCommit To Democracy FacebookCommit To Democracy YoutubeCommit To Democracy Instagram

This week, we discuss two American horror films. The first is Let's Scare Jessica to Death (1971), an independent film co-written and directed by John Hancock. The film depicts the nightmarish experiences of a psychologically fragile woman who comes to believe that another strange, mysterious young woman she has let into her home may actually be a vampire. The second is The Boogeyman (2023), an adaptation of the 1973 Stephen King short story, directed by British indie director Rob Savage. The film stars Sophie Thatcher, Chris Messina and David Dastmalchian. In it, a family reeling from the death of a wife and mother is haunted by a monster that feasts on pain and fear. Halloween has always been a special time for classic movies. From the early Universal Studios monster films to the psychological thrillers of ALFRED HITCHCOCK to the gory blood-bathes of the 1980s slasher films, Hollywood understood that people love to be frightened. In this Halloween episode, hosts Steve and Nan share some of the perhaps lesser-known scary movies to enjoy this Halloween season. Some are really great; some...not so much. But they all have a special place in Steve and Nan's demented little hearts. So pull the covers up tight, keep the lights on and ignore that thump in the night as they explore a few fun eerie movies. Let's Scare Jessica to Death, paired with Bohemian Rapids Czech Pilsner, which the good people at @iowabrewingco gave us. A dreamlike horror tale from 1971, this picture is about a woman, recently hospitalized for an unexplained mental situation, who moves to a country farm with her husband and their friend. They encounter a free spirited hippie who may not be what she pretends to be. He'll, there's a debate whether she's even alive. Bohemian Pils was picked for the somewhat Bohemian lifestyle these folks live, and because it would be an ideal beer for crushing while working on their farm. Thanks for listening! This week the duo watches one of Josh's all-time faves, 1971's Let's Scare Jessica to Death. From Wikipedia: "Let's Scare Jessica to Death is a 1971 American independent horror film co-written and directed by John Hancock in his directorial debut, and starring Zohra Lampert, Barton Heyman, Gretchen Corbett, and Mariclare Costello. The film depicts the nightmarish experiences of a psychologically fragile woman who comes to believe that another strange, mysterious young woman she has let into her home may actually be a vampire."But first: Josh is big, blond, and beautiful. He guested on Nightmare on Fierce Street to talk about Friday the 13th Part 2. Josh plays the tabletop RPG Dread. Josh watched Legend of Hell House and the duo discuss the hotness of Roddy McDowall, Steve Buscemi, etc. Drusilla is hungover from watching Karate Kid films. Then they get into the feature, which Josh is obsessed with. This was somewhat of a lost film for a long time. They discuss the greatness of 70s horror, the end of flower children, the misleading title of Let's Scare Jessica to Death, Baby Natasha Lyonne, Zorha Lapert's incredible performance, the original marketing of the movie, theater people, the combo of horror subgenres this film belongs to, the chicness of doing grave rubbings, whether or not this is a lesbian vampire film, and then they play Have They Seen It? Welcome, and here we are! 2 whole years with the brothers! This episode, we invite our dad on to talk about a movie, that back in his day, apparently scared him. This one, was a blast. Bare with us a little on this one, the audio can be a little high sometimes. We seriously want to thank all of you who have stuck with us for all this time. We wouldn't have done this silly thing for this long without you. 100 times, thank you. We love you.
We're back, and talking to film critic and cosplayer Jessica Scott, who brought us two underrated and under-discussed bangers: John Hancock's ethereal and unsettling Let's Scare Jessica To Death (1971), and William Peter Blatty's chaotic long lost successor to The Exorcist, The Exorcist III (1990 - and yes, The Exorcist II exists, but for our purposes, no it doesn't). You might wonder what these movies have in common for a double feature, and we're here to tell you: actually a lot! Both were developed to diverge heavily from their source material (we're dying to read the original It Drinks Hippie Blood almost as bad as we are to see the director's cut of The Exorcist III), both use naturalistic relationships to drive the horror, both feature fantastic voice work and dream/nightmare logic, both were ignored by Roger Ebert, and of course, Zohra Lampert - who if you're not familiar with as a performer, you're about to be. What these don't have in common, in no particular order: 70's pesticide horror, Weird Little Guy Things, creepy car-handle holding, the Catholic Joker, fear of free love, “a lesbian flick,” and Fabio. Jessica Scott is an entertainment critic and culture writer who focuses primarily on feminist issues, mental health representation, and queer issues in the horror genre.
