This month, Tom sits down with Cynthia Fuhrman, TOCG's Vice President of Executive Search and the former Managing Director of Portland Center Stage (PCS). While at PCS, Cynthia was heavily involved in advocating for arts funding at the federal level during the beginning of the COVID-19 Pandemic and brings a unique perspective on how art organizations and their boards can meaningfully represent their communities, particularly through political advocacy and collaboration with other arts organizations in their communities. In the episode, you'll hear Cynthia refer to "SVOG," which stands for the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant, a grant from the Federal Government to help performance venues that had to close due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Tom and Cynthia also discuss the "Save Our Stages Initiative" which was the advocacy group that worked with lawmakers to create these grants on a federal level. For more information on Save Our Stages, visit the website here: https://www.saveourstages.com. For more on Tom O'Connor Consulting Group, visit www.tomocgroup.com.

We discuss current challenges continuing to face small independent venues, and what we hope will be lessons learned on the other side of the pandemic. The National Independent Venue Association (NIVA) formed during the pandemic to support independent performance venues and promoters. NIVA now encompasses over 3,000 independent venues in 50 states including Washington D.C. They've pressured the Small Business Administration to act. By the end of 2020, the Small Business Association (SBA) signed the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant, the largest arts funding program in history with $16 billion dollars allocated for independent venues. It took months of lobbying to get the federal government's attention, and in early June, when only 100 venues had received aid, the lobbying continued. In this audio exclusive, correspondent Janet Hernandez, an intern for The Laura Flanders Show, interviews Stephen Chilton, NIVA's vice president and owner of the independent venue Rebel Lounge in Phoenix, AZ. What's at stake when venues can't reopen, and how will NIVA support the industry post-pandemic? While mainstream media or money media keeps you in a bubble, we're committed to popping that bubble by continuing to bring you listener sponsored radical, intersectional media! Can we depend on you to chip in? Go to https://LauraFlanders.org/donate and join our team by making a donation today. Thanks

I saw my first show at Once Ballroom in Somerville a few years ago, entering the building, wondering if I just walked into a bar mitzvah, or as JJ Gonson first thought when she saw the room for the first time, a high school prom. But on the raised stage I saw the band, Dada. That was only the first time among many. Mostly I was there for the infamous Boston Emissions Rock and Roll Rumble, where the place transformed into a community of music fans and bands who supported each other and the music for which Boston is famous.JJ Gonson saw the room not as a ballroom, but as an opportunity to share her love of music with the world. That may sound a bit cheesy, but JJ is all about the music.Starting off as a rock photographer, (she is responsible for the Elliott Smith self-titled album cover as well as his Roman Candle album), she eventually began to manage Elliott's band Heatmiser and then Elliott himself before he left us all too soon.ONCE was to become a catering company but soon morphed into one of the great, unique independent venues in Boston. COVID hit hard, unfortunately, and ONCE had to close. But the community JJ worked so hard to pull together through music, well, pulled together to raise money to try and keep ONCE alive. And while the venue did eventually have to close, she was able to go virtual with the ONCE Virtual Venue to give musicians the ability to continue playing for people. It also gave JJ the opportunity to search for another location, which she found at Boynton Yards. I'll let her talk about that. But JJ continues to fight for venues, Boston music, and the musicians that make up this amazing city, through her incredible work with Save Our Stages and the National Independent Venue Association.Suffice it to say that we are all fortunate to have our friend JJ Gonson on our side.

In Fall 2020, the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA) teamed up with YouTube to produce the SaveOurStages Festival — quite possibly the biggest virtual music festival of all time — to raise money for the Save Our Stages Act: life-saving federal aid for the nation's independent music venues. They were the first businesses to close due to COVID-19 and they'll be the last to open. Nothing exemplifies the heart of business more than artists, legislators, corporations, and fans coming together to save live music. And there's so much to talk about, from the logistics of organizing such an event with 30+ major artists, the technology to stream it around the world, and the ultimate goal of lobbying the US Congress to get involved and pass this legislation. Many venues still haven't received financial assistance, so the emergency relief fund is still accepting donations to distribute to the most at-risk venues. It can feel hard to believe, but it seems like live music in the US might be coming back (finally). Which also means that bands and fans are getting ready to line up and spend a LOT of time and money with the concert behemoth that is Live Nation / Ticketmaster, a massive public corporation with a lock on the American concert industry. But how did these companies achieve their position? What exactly does a promoter do anyway? And what was the deal with that whole Pearl Jam vs. Ticketmaster thing? Sam and Saxon celebrate the return of the road with a deep dive into the touring industry—from the secondary-market-formerly-known-as-scalping to the unexpected heroism of Garth Brooks. Turn the page, baby. Turn the page. Subscribe to our newsletter! There are an ambitious, pioneering few that really made a go at virtual comedy and, whatever the platform may be, they "figured" it out. Fizaa Dosani, one of the ringleaders behind Facial Recognition Comedy, is one of those few. She transitioned from doing a live stand-up showcase and a podcast to doing bunches of virtual shows on all the platforms, then became one of the chosen few finalists for Clubhouse's Creators First Pilot Season program. Fizaa joins TCB's Jake Kroeger to go over her hustling through all of that over the last year as well as "hot" takes on indie venues finally getting COVID-19 relief, Donald Glover's take on cancel culture, and Seth Rogen's stance on not planning to work with James Franco at this time.Follow Fizaa @fizaadosani on IG and Twitter and follow Facial Recognition Comedy @facialrecomedy on Twitter and @facialrecognitioncomedy on IG. Welcome back for another episode! In this episode, we will be discussing how sick Jenn's new jacket is, NIVA (National Independent Venue Association), the Save Our Stages act, and how venues have been impacted from COVID-19.
Thanks to the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA), 2021 has started off on a positive note for event promoters and entertainment venues with the passing of the Save Our Stages (SOS) Act.
The first episode of the new year and we're off to a... well, rough start. We discuss the benefits of living in a "comedy world" and how the ability to poke fun at tumultuous times is actually therapeutic, but also discuss the pitfalls it may cause. We also examine what it takes for a comedian to be able to be fearless on stage and toe the line between comedy and offensive material. Plus the #SaveOurStages Act has received some good news and Scott may or may not actually hate comedy!Use Code:COMEDYfor 15% off at silkcityhotsauce.com

When the pandemic reached the United States earlier this year, independent entertainment venues were among the first to close to prevent the spread of the disease. They will also likely be the last to re-open. In response, two U.S. senators have introduced the bipartisan Save Our Stages Act, which would support independent live music venues. But is it enough? Join us at the City Club as Kyle Kidd, Angela Meleca, Executive Director of Ohio Citizens for the Arts and Sean Watterson, Ohio Precinct Captain of the National Independent Venue Association, explain.
