"Pick Me Up" isn't just a great episode of TV, it's an underrated gem that Bennett and Jim both recommend highly to all genre fans. Michael Moriarty delivers a performance for the ages in Larry Cohen's final directorial effort, the high-concept thrill ride, 'Pick Me Up.' Moriarty is one of two roving killers who menace a bus full of passengers before trailing our final girl (The Waterboy's Fairuza Balk). One killer's a trucker who picks up passengers before dispatching them. The other's a drifter who thumbs rides to make his kills. Come for that can't-miss premise and stay for the inventive kills and one-of-a-kind acting choices. Created by Mick Garris, Masters of Horror was a two-season series on Showtime that challenged genre legends to create an hour-long horror film. Follow along as Bennett and Jim are forced to spend no more than 20 minutes discussing each episode from the first season of the series or face a room full of poisonous gas.

For this week's episode of Unclear and Present Danger, Jamelle and John watched Courage Under Fire, a 1996 war drama directed by Edward Zwick and starring Denzel Washington and Meg Ryan, as well as Lou Diamond Phillips, Matt Damon, Michael Moriarty and Bronson Pinchot. In Courage Under Fire, Denzel Washington plays Lieutenant Colonel Nathaniel Serling, an army tank commander who accidentally fires on and destroys one of his own tanks during a nighttime battle in the closing days of the Persian Gulf War, killing his best friend in the process. The Army covers up the details and assigns Serling to a desk job, where he is tasked with investigating and determining whether a solider should receive the award for which they were recommended. He is assigned the case of Captain Karen Walden, the commander of a Medevac Huey helicopter sent to rescue the crew of a Black Hawk helicopter. She was killed in the line of duty, saving both the lives of her crew and those of the downed helicopter. The Army, and the White House, wants to give her the Medal of Honor. As Serling interviews the men involved in the incident, he notices inconsistencies in the testimonies of Walden's crew. Some praise her strongly, others say she was a coward. Still others testify to events that cannot be confirmed. Under pressure from both the White House and his commanding officer to authorize the award — and struggling with PTSD from his experiences on the battlefield — Serling resolves to discover the truth of the matter, even if it costs him his career. The tagline for Courage Under Fire was “In wartime, the first casualty is always truth.”You can find Courage Under Fire to rent or buy on demand at Amazon and iTunes.Episodes come out roughly every two weeks, and we'll see you then with an episode on Star Trek: First Contact, the second film starring the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Bring Me The Axe! Horror Podcast

This week Bryan and Dave take a look at John Carl Buechler's swing-and-a-miss for the Charles Band dynasty, Troll. It's supposed to be filled with whimsy, adventure, and high-fantasy but is instead filled with crappy rubber monsters and cringe-inducing performances by actors tenured enough to know better by this point. Noah Hathaway casually throws away any goodwill he earned with his portrayal of Atreyu in The Neverending Story. Michael Moriarty seems to have no idea what he's even doing there. It's all a jumbled mess that somehow managed to be a smash-hit at the box office for Empire Pictures and a video rental gem of the 1980's. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/bring-me-the-axe/message

“I was quite set on theater. I was going to go out to Los Angeles for one year -- and that was it. Then I was going to go back to New York and devote myself to the theater. It didn't work out that way.” -- Jan Eliasberg80s TV Ladies "Director Ladies" series continues as Susan and Sharon welcome legendary director Jan Eliasberg. Jan began her television director career in the 1980s with an episode of Cagney & Lacey -- and she went on to be the first female director ever on Miami Vice, Crime Story and 21 Jump Street. She has also directed episodes of Dirty Dancing, L.A. Law, Dawson's Creek, Party of Five, Sisters, Parenthood, Nashville, Supernatural, Bull and NCIS: Los Angeles. Jan recently published her first novel, Hannah's War.In this enlightening conversation, Jan discusses how the American Film Institute (AFI) and “The Original Six” opened up opportunities for her and other female directors; how to navigate directing a network television show for the first time -- and how courage, tenacity and little guile can make all the difference …THE CONVERSATIONHow do you get 10,000 hours of experience when directing requires so much time, money and people: Europe or Yale? What can Shakespeare and Ibsen teach you about directing TV? I mean, they're good, but I'm good, too. And that was the kind of confidence -- or maybe you could say arrogance, fearlessness - -that it takes to go into a field that is predominantly male and actually make a dent and get a job.”How a twisty game of cat-and-mouse with Barney Rosensweig led to Jan's first directing gig -- on Cagney & Lacey. Viatel Technology Group, the leading digital services provider, has announced the acquisition of MJ Flood Technology, the tech division of the MJ Flood Group. This strategic move strengthens Viatel's market position, bolstering its existing expertise with MJ Flood's capabilities in cybersecurity, cloud, and managed services. As two established Microsoft Solution Partners, the combination of these companies signals a major market shift, creating a new powerhouse in this space. MJ Flood's credentials include being named Microsoft's Modern Work Partner of the Year and Partner of the Year for Calling, Meetings & Devices for Microsoft Teams. MJ Flood's strong customer base, particularly in the financial services, healthcare, and education sectors, further expands Viatel's reach. Paul Rellis, CEO of Viatel Technology Group, said, "I am delighted to welcome the MJ Flood Technology customers, and James Finglas and his team into Viatel. MJ Flood has a long history, best in class solutions, and a highly skilled team. We are confident that our mutual dedication to excellence and service will make them feel right at home with us. They can expect the same exceptional service and technical expertise they've come to rely on, now backed by Viatel's broader capabilities." Today's announcement sees Viatel acquire the technology division of the MJ Flood Group. MJ Flood Technology was founded in 1998 as part of a group diversification strategy. The MJ Flood Group and its remaining divisions, including MJ Flood Printing & Imaging and MJ Flood Security, will continue to operate successfully under current ownership. This acquisition is the ninth such deal by Viatel since 2020. It follows strategic investment by Macquarie Capital in Viatel, announced in December 2023. Macquarie's investment was earmarked to support the continued growth and expansion of the Viatel business in Ireland and overseas. The transaction is subject to regulatory approvals and is expected to close by mid-2024, when the combined entity will be well-positioned to deliver unmatched value in cybersecurity, cloud, networking, and Microsoft solutions. Darran Nangle and Edel Daly of A&L Goodbody, and Gareth Cosgrove, Graceanne O'Brien and Sinead McKeaney of Grant Thornton acted as advisors to Viatel on the acquisition. David Lyons and Michael Moriarty of IBI and Stephen Fuller of McCann Fitzgerald acted for MJ Flood. See more stories here.

Vincent Curatola of The Sopranos Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson I'm not sure how it's possible to meet a person once on Zoom and feel like they're a treasured friend that I've known forever, but that's exactly how it is with Vincent Curatola, aka Johnny Sack of The Sopranos, whom before meeting I feared would whack. Me. On this our second sitdown we talked how a businessman who'd nary graced a stage in a few short years under the tutelage of acting coach Michael Moriarty, took on Law & Order, then wrote and starred in his own short film, Dearly Beloved, co-starring Tony Sirrico, and then was soon his Sopranos co-star. Vincent shared the story of that relationship, his casting, and how the work played out. We talked about the Mafia as if there is such a thing, David Chase, James Gandolfini, Ginny Sack, and Sydney Pollack. We talked about acting, how I've never caught him doing it, how he was trained, and how he trains, the upcoming reinvention of his short film Dearly Beloved, and his mother, father, grandmother, and Maureen, his dearly beloveds. Vincent's a warm, thoughtful, whipsmart, entertaining fellow, a great storyteller, whose company I can't get enough of. Hoping to Zoom into one of his acting workshops one day soon, rehone that skill, and just maybe he'll write in a fake aging blonde in that upcoming remake. The Walter Paisley Movie House

John D. Hancock has directed everything from critically acclaimed theatrical productions, to award winning films, to made-for-TV movies, to producing his own movies in LaPorte, IN. His Academy Award nominated movies, Sticky My Fingers... Fleet My Feet and Bang the Drum Slowly both showcased his ability to ground the action in the reality of the film while humanizing even the vilest of characters. His 1971 cult classic horror pic, Let's Scare Jessica to Death continues to pull in new fans from all over the globe. John talks to me about his life, his work in Off Broadway theaters in NYC, his stint in Hollywood, and why he came back to Indiana. We talk about how music and directing relate to one another. He tells me stories about Charles Durning, Tyne Daly, and Michael Moriarty. We talk about him being fired from Jaws 2 only to be brought in to take over on final production of Wolfen. We commiserate on the many pitfalls of widowhood and how directing his late wife, Dorothy Tristan, in her last, deeply autobiographical film, which she also wrote, The Looking Glass, helped them both come to terms with the inevitable. Find out more about John and his Indiana-based production company here: Filmacres
