But the tranquility is soon shattered by strange occurrences, whispers in the night, and a growing feeling that something – or someone – isn't quite right. The second is The Boogeyman (2023), an adaptation of the 1973 Stephen King short story, directed by British indie director Rob Savage. The film stars Sophie Thatcher, Chris Messina and David Dastmalchian. BENNETT YELLIN Born and raised in Los Angeles, Bennett received his B.A. in fiction from U.C.L.A.  Still not ready to enter the real world, he enrolled at UMass in Amherst for an M.F.A. in fiction. It was there — on the first day of school — that he met and befriended Peter Farrelly. On a lark, they tried writing a comedy together and this spec script ultimately got into the hands of Eddie Murphy and the Zucker Brothers, creators of Airplane and The Naked Gun. Both Murphy and the Zuckers asked the duo to write movies for them, and their career was off and running. Yellin wrote exclusively with Peter for years until they asked his brother Bobby to join them. The three went on to write a number of unproduced features together until they created Dumb and Dumber in 1994 and reunited in 2014 to co-write the official sequel chronicling the further idiotic adventures of Harry and Lloyd, Dumb and Dumber To. In 2007, the Farrelly Brothers branched out on their own and Yellin partnered with James Robert Johnson to create a professional writing duo that has endured for sixteen years. Among the plethora of projects they've tackled during their career — some produced, others not — the two have co-written Let's Scare Jessica to Death for Paramount Pictures, the Fox situation comedy Unhitched, the direct-to-DVD thriller Joy Ride 2: Dead Ahead, Paramount Pictures' Hotel For Dogs 2, the Anchor Bay action-thriller In the Blood with Gina Carano, the 20th Century Fox family film, Santa's Little Helper, and the Warner Brothers re-boot of the Police Academy series, Police Academy: Takin' it to the Streets. More recently, Yellin and Johnston have co-written a live action family stage show adaptation of the hugely popular Angry Birds IP, and the two are currently at work creating an original pilot for a new animated show.Bennett's Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/bennett.yellinPhoto: Copyright Wilkinson/2023Opening and closing music courtesy the very talented Zakhar Valaha via Pixabay. To contact Wilkinson- email him at BecomingWilkinson@gmail.com

Today on Bloodhaus, it's Josh's favorite movie of all time: Roman Polanski's Rosemary's Baby. From wiki: “Rosemary's Baby is a 1968 American psychological horror film written and directed by Roman Polanski, based on Ira Levin's 1967 novel of the same name. The film stars Mia Farrow as a young (soon pregnant) wife living in Manhattan who comes to suspect that her elderly neighbors are members of a Satanic cult and are grooming her in order to use her baby for their rituals. The film's supporting cast includes John Cassavetes, Ruth Gordon, Sidney Blackmer, Maurice Evans, Ralph Bellamy, Patsy Kelly, Angela Dorian, and, in his feature film debut, Charles Grodin. “ But first: which animal is the most punk? Also, Drusilla saw Asteroid City and they discuss Wes Anderson, who created the millennial aesthetic. (The infamous pickle cut comes up, too.) Plus! We are so, so excited about Vidiots! (https://vidiotsfoundation.org/) Josh was at Portland Horror Fest and it won an award! He also saw a feature called T Blockers by a trans teen girl and was blown away. He also watched 1981's Dark Night of the Scarecrow and it really scared him. John D. Hancock has directed everything from critically acclaimed theatrical productions, to award winning films, to made-for-TV movies, to producing his own movies in LaPorte, IN. His Academy Award nominated movies, Sticky My Fingers... Fleet My Feet and Bang the Drum Slowly both showcased his ability to ground the action in the reality of the film while humanizing even the vilest of characters. His 1971 cult classic horror pic, Let's Scare Jessica to Death continues to pull in new fans from all over the globe. John talks to me about his life, his work in Off Broadway theaters in NYC, his stint in Hollywood, and why he came back to Indiana. We talk about how music and directing relate to one another. He tells me stories about Charles Durning, Tyne Daly, and Michael Moriarty. We talk about him being fired from Jaws 2 only to be brought in to take over on final production of Wolfen. We commiserate on the many pitfalls of widowhood and how directing his late wife, Dorothy Tristan, in her last, deeply autobiographical film, which she also wrote, The Looking Glass, helped them both come to terms with the inevitable. Find out more about John and his Indiana-based production company here: Filmacres

They encounter a free spirited hippie who may not be what she pretends to be. He'll, there's a debate whether she's even alive. Teenagers with knives, invading insects, vampire children, crazed surgeons, wronged actors out for revenge—the horror genre has a haunted house for everyone, no matter your taste. Despite treating women like disposable straws, or lumping the queer and disabled together as monsters, scary movies have long been celebrated by the people most likely to be before the opening credits are done. For this year's season of scares, editor Joe Vallese asked 24 queer and trans writers to consider the horror movies that matter to them, from Halloween to Hereditary and all points in between. The resulting collection, It Came from the Closet, demonstrates the complicated relationship between the macabre and the marginalized. Go beyond the episode:It Came from the Closet: Queer Reflections on Horror, edited by Joe ValleseRead these essays from the collection: Carmen Maria Machado on Jennifer's Body, Jen Corrigan on Jaws, Zefyr Lisowski on The Ring and Pet SemataryIf your taste runs to spooky books, too, we have several lists for that Our host's top horror picks, for every taste:Not that scary if you're trying to dip your toes into the genre: Les Diaboliques, The Devil Rides Out, A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night, The Cremator, CureMild scares that come with a side of laughter: Sugar Hill, An American Werewolf in London, Throne of Blood, Rare Exports, PrevengeSpooky silents, most memorably watched with a live score: The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Häxan, NosferatuBeloved classics: The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), Alien + Aliens, The Thing, The People Under the Stairs, Candyman, The Wicker ManModern favorites: The Babadook, Get Out, Raw, His House, The Witch, The House of the Devil, The DescentUnderrated gems: Possession, The Appointment, Onibaba, The Lure, Let's Scare Jessica to Death, Mother Joan of the Angels, It FollowsTune in every week to catch interviews with the liveliest voices from literature, the arts, sciences, history, and public affairs; reports on cutting-edge works in progress; long-form narratives; and compelling excerpts from new books. This week the duo watches one of Josh's all-time faves, 1971's Let's Scare Jessica to Death. From Wikipedia: "Let's Scare Jessica to Death is a 1971 American independent horror film co-written and directed by John Hancock in his directorial debut, and starring Zohra Lampert, Barton Heyman, Gretchen Corbett, and Mariclare Costello. The film depicts the nightmarish experiences of a psychologically fragile woman who comes to believe that another strange, mysterious young woman she has let into her home may actually be a vampire."But first: Josh is big, blond, and beautiful. He guested on Nightmare on Fierce Street to talk about Friday the 13th Part 2.  Josh plays the tabletop RPG Dread. Josh watched Legend of Hell House and the duo discuss the hotness of Roddy McDowall, Steve Buscemi, etc. Drusilla is hungover from watching Karate Kid films. Then they get into the feature, which Josh is obsessed with. This was somewhat of a lost film for a long time. They discuss the greatness of 70s horror, the end of flower children, the misleading title of Let's Scare Jessica to Death, Baby Natasha Lyonne, Zorha Lapert's incredible performance, the original marketing of the movie, theater people, the combo of horror subgenres this film belongs to, the chicness of doing grave rubbings, whether or not this is a lesbian vampire film, and then they play Have They Seen It? Website: http://www.bloodhauspod.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/BloodhausPodInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/bloodhauspod/Email: bloodhauspod@gmail.comDrusilla's art: https://www.sisterhydedesign.com/Drusilla's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hydesister/Drusilla's Letterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/drew_phillips/Joshua's website: https://www.joshuaconkel.com/Joshua's Twitter: https://twitter.com/JoshuaConkel Joshua's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/joshua_conkel/Joshua's Letterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/joshuaconkel/

WELCOME TO THE END OF THE SUMMER OF LOVE AND THE BEGINNING OF A COUNTERCULTURE DEATHTRIP THAT WILL SCARE YOU TO DEATH!   After Night of the Living Dead (1968) and before the slasher boom of the early ‘80s, American horror went through one of its most creative and influential eras. But, for every Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), Carrie (1976), and Halloween (1978), there were dozens of under-the-radar oddities that took years – sometimes decades – to be recognized by cult audiences for their unique contributions to American horror. What do you get when you cross the Hollywood tropes surrounding mentally ill women with the can-do indie spirit of regional horror films? This episode, of course! Taking a cue from both Kier-La Janisse's "House of Psychotic Women" and Stephen Thrower's "Nightmare USA," Aria and Lori discuss the ways in which depictions of "female PsYcHoSiS" are represented in films that exist beyond the pearly gates of studio filmmaking, with explorations of "Pigs" (1973), "Let's Scare Jessica to Death" (1971), and "The Witch Who Came From the Sea" (1976).Audio clip from the trailer for "House of Psychotic Women" (aka "Blue Eyes of the Broken Doll") (1974). ...or better yet, let's get super seventies spooky with this hidden gem! Watching the titular Jessica unravel at the hands of a spectral vampire entity in the countryside of damp New England may have been enough to make us giddy, but sprinkle in the seventies indie vibes that scratch that particular filmmaker itch and you've got a real veritable feast at our fangs. Having said that, there are some flaws that keep this one from being perfect, but still earn it a double “rent” from the guys. Do yourself a favor and turn out the lights, curl up by the fire, and get a hold of a copy of this moody beauty of a movie. Hello! Welcome to the latest – as in very late – edition of the exclusive audio commentary podcast hosted by me, David Hughes. On this episode, I'm delighted to welcome writer-director John Hancock – 82 years of age and still going strong – for an exclusive Zoom-enabled dive into one of my all-time favourite horror films, Let's Scare Jessica to Death, to celebrate its 50th anniversary. For best results, cue it up to the film, which is available to watch in the UK here and in the US here. My intro to the podcast will tell you when to press play. Apologies that the audio quality is not optimal; I promise I will figure out how to use my microphone properly and not rely on shouting at the screen in future. Huge thanks to Mr. Hancock himself, of course, for inviting me to sit down and talk about one of my favourite films. John has asked me to give a shout out to Michael Doyle, author of Hancock on Hancock, which is available on Kindle here and in hardcover from all book retailers, so don't just automatically check Amazon. Comments? Feedback? Suggestions? Email David *at * Rogue-Commentary *dot* com or send us a tweet. We have lots of exciting episodes in the works, so if you like what you hear – or just the idea – please subscribe, and remember to rate us wherever you hear this podcast – it'll really help us to keep going. Episode 166 - Halloween III: Season of the Witch We've made it to part four of four of our episodes covering the third entries of the big famous horror franchises! Being the closest to Halloween (the holiday), we appropriately finish up the month with Halloween (the series). We had one of our occasional divisive reactions to “Halloween III: Season of the Witch.” Ryan loved being driven scared-crazy by the infamous, in-film TV jingle, while Tim hated being driven actually-crazy by it. And Ryan loved so much more, and Tim disliked so much more! So with respective ratings of “buy it” and “stream it,” plenty of dismemberment was still to be had (especially a given when you have such a nutzo-story). Hey guys...you know what would be fun to do for a season finale and finale of the third annual Forgotten Horror? Let's Scare Jessica to Death!!! Get it? Because that's the movie that the Mikes are talking abou.....those boo's better be from ghosts!!! Mike Field and Mike Butler talk about the 1971 film, Let's Scare Jessica to Death, directed by John D. Hancock, who got the directing gig for Jaws 2 based on one of the scenes from this film...before he got himself fired from said big career opportunity. The Mikes will bring up that fact and more as they discuss what they thought of this film. From the odd way they present the vampires in the film, to the poor use of the supporting actors. Butler will lament that although the idea of the film is solid and the attempt at tackling themes of mental health within a horror film is admirable for a film from 1971, everything else is incredibly lackluster and handled in such a muddled way. Field will of course disagree with Butler and talk about his respect for a low budget film that goes so far and gets the director a shot at the big show; even if said director does blow it. Butler is probably wrong though, as this is one of Stephen King's favorite horror films. So grab your frog's breath and worm's wort, please don't eat the deadly nightshade to the left and right of you and prepare for Halloween as you listen to the finale to the third annual https://www.forgottenentertainment.com/ (Forgotten Horror)! Today’s episode “Dedication to the Craft” features our guest John D Hancock. Director John Hancock’s early interest was music. As an adolescent, he was an accomplished violinist, and concertmaster of the Chicago Youth Orchestra. He became interested in the theatre while attending Harvard College and directed a number of plays there. Because of the promise he exhibited, he received a grant from Harvard to study theatre in Europe. He spent the time observing Bertolt Brecht’s Berliner Ensemble. His directorial debut was the hit Off-Broadway production of Brecht’s A Man’s A Man. This was followed by Robert Lowell’s Endicott and the Red Cross at the American Place Theatre, and Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Theater de Lys with sets by Jim Dine, for which Hancock received the Obie Award. Cue Magazine noted, “This brutal, vulgar, and erotic production of Shakespeare’s sex fantasy is the most original and arresting I’ve ever witnessed. This is the best of all the Dreams and an important pioneering effort in re-interpreting the play.” His success on the New York stage led to his being appointed Artistic Director of the famed San Francisco Actors Workshop and later to directing assignments at the Pittsburgh Playhouse and the New Repertory Theatre Company in New York. Hancock has received widespread critical acclaim for his approach to the work of many contemporary and classic playwrights. He worked closely on several occasions with Tennessee Williams. In 1970, with a grant from the American Film Institute, Hancock directed the short film, Sticky My Fingers, Fleet My Feet, for which he received an Academy Award nomination. Hancock’s feature film credits include Bang The Drum Slowly (Paramount), California Dreaming (AIP), Let’s Scare Jessica to Death (Paramount), Baby Blue Marine (Columbia), Weeds (DEG), and the Christmas classic Prancer (Orion), starring Sam Elliott. On today’s show, we forego the usual Great Writers Share format, as we turn off the lights, ignite some candles, place our Jack-o-Lanterns in the windows and invite the monsters in for a special Halloween episode of, what our guests have lovingly dubbed, the Great Writers Scare podcast. The premise is simple. Four horror writers. Ninety minutes of unfiltered time to discuss all things horror writing. But who are these other three writers, you might be wondering. Joining Dan today we have one of our regular co-hosts, sci-fi and horror author, John Crinan, as well as two powerhouses in the horror community. I’m excited to welcome back to the show, the founder and host of the This Is Horror podcast, Michael David Wilson, and to say hello for the first time to his glamorous (but haunting) co-host, Bob Pastorella. In this episode we go deep into:Why do we write horror? Our earliest horror experiencesWhy are we not repulsed by horror? What has 2020 brought to horror, and how has the pandemic shaped writers of the genre?Michael and Bob’s new book, “They’re Watching"Michael and Bob’s collaboration process when writing the bookJohn Crinan’s story as featured on Hawk & Cleaver’s “The Halloween Horrors of Mill Lane” limited seriesThe Other Stories anthology, edited by Daniel WillcocksFind out more about Dan, John, Michael, and Bob:www.danielwillcocks.comhttps://www.johncrinan.com/https://www.michaeldavidwilson.co.uk/https://www.thisishorror.co.uk/about/staff/bob-pastorella/Links from the show:Michael’s Interview on the show: https://pod.link/1473869415/episode/NmM2NWRjMTctZDA3Yy00Y2VlLWI0N2MtMTA5NDMxODQ2MTlmMichael and Bob’s, "They’re Watching": https://books2read.com/u/4A7YGdMichael David Wilson’s, "The Girl in the Video": https://books2read.com/u/b5krzRBob Pastorella’s "Mojo Rising": https://books2read.com/u/m2Mvn7Chuck Palahniuk’s “Guts”: http://readfulltext.blogspot.com/2013/10/guts-by-chuck-palahniuk.htmlLet’s Scare Jessica to Death: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067341/Night of the Living Dead: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0063350/Texas Chainsaw Massacre: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0072271/Poltergeist: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084516/Stephen King’s “Cujo”: https://books2read.com/u/bQd9XdAn American Werewolf in London:

Reviled in its time, but now a cult classic for its creative subversion of the Michael Myers formula, Halloween III: Season of the Witch is the most seasonal film of the franchise, and perhaps the greatest delight as well. The bleached Captain Kirk mask has been traded in for a more traditional set of Halloween icons, but the evil hidden within pervades this new commercial threat in equal measures. It may not be as sleekly directed or overtly terrifying as John Carpenter's iconic original, but this attempt to break away from the now defined tropes of the slasher genre provides a veritable grab bag of spectacular spooks, including Celtic rituals, body snatching robots, deep-seated conspiracy plots, and worldwide peril for trick 'r treaters everywhere. We're joined again by our resident expert on all things Halloween, Jesse Sparks, to discuss what makes this odd duck such a perennial Halloween favorite, and why it failed to capture the audience's imaginations upon its initial release. On this episode, the gang tackles a horror double feature that should be experienced by everyone: Gloria Katz & Willard Huyck’s Messiah of Evil and John Hancock’s 1971 chiller, Let’s Scare Jessica to Death. Although they are two films that convey their respective female protagonists’ crumbling mental states, each entry is very unique in how it presents that material but each one is equally fascinating in its own right. One a low-budget, Euro-inspired semi-riff on Carnival of Souls and the other a forward-thinking meditation on mental illness and isolation, the two make for a double bill the perfection of which even caught the gang by surprise.   Patrick Crain: @patrickcrain73 Eric King: @uncannykarloff Rodney McKinley: @rodofwar1 Kevin Tudor: @KevTudo

Kat and Samm are back for the eighth episode of Daughters of Darkness, which is the first of a two-part series inspired by Stephen Thrower’s Nightmare USA. This 500+ plus masterpiece is an in-depth examination of low budget American horror from the ‘70s and ‘80s, the type overlooked or even unheard of compared to mainstream fare like The Exorcist and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. In the words of publisher FAB Press: “Nightmare USA explores the development of America’s subterranean horror film industry, spotlighting some of the wildest films imaginable from an era unchecked by censorship or ‘good taste.’ Ranging from cult favourites like I Drink Your Blood to stylish mind-benders like Messiah of Evil and ultra-violent shockers like Don’t Go in the House, Nightmare USA goes where no other in-depth study has gone before, revealing the fascinating true stories behind classics and obscurities alike.” Kat and Samm discuss some of their favorite films from Thrower’s book, beginning with the exceptional Let’s Scare Jessica to Death (1971), an eerie reimagining of both the vampire myth and gas lighting plot, which explores a woman’s descent into madness in an old house in the New England countryside. Next up is Grave of the Vampire (1972), starring Michael Fucking Pataki, which is probably the only film in history to begin with a vampire serial rapist defiling a woman whose boyfriend just proposed to her by an open coffin. The still terrifying and strangely ageless Messiah of Evil (1973) reworks the Lovecraftian mythos while also following a young woman’s lonely search for her artist father in a small town by the seaside. For a complete change of pace, Godmonster of Indian Flats (1973) is the world’s most insane monster movie that’s not really a monster movie at all, about a mutant sheep and corruption in desert town. Kat and Samm close out the episode with a look at the rapturous The Centrefold Girls (1974), a proto-slasher about a moralist murdering the models of a nude magazine.
