The first ever triple-bill episode, as voted for by Patrons of this podcast for Sequeltember, on the history and legacy of Jaws 2, Jaws 3-D & Jaws: The Revenge ! The sequels to the previous episode on Jaws. Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the water. JAWS 2 was wanted pretty much immediately after the success of Jaws, but Steven Spielberg wasn't interested in reprising his directorial role. The director they did find, John D. Hancock, was fired after a month, and the production had already spent huge amounts of time and money. Once Jeannot Szwarc came on board, tensions with star Roy Scheider would escalate. Not that Scheider wanted to come back...JAWS 3-D. The third dimension is terror, but it wasn't always terror. Famously, Jaws 3 started life as a National Lampoon spoof, called Jaws 3 People 0, to be directed by Joe Dante, and co-written by John Hughes. When Universal quashed that idea, it was decided to capitalise on the rise of threequels with 3D, to give Jaws 3 the edge. Jaws 3-D would be filmed at SeaWorld Orlando, and would be the first 3-D film to use ArriVision, but the increased costs meant cutting back on visual effects... JAWS: THE REVENGE. This time, it's personal. Or at least it was for Sid Sheinberg. Universal desperately needed a financial boost after a string of box office disappointments in 1986, and he decided to revive the Jaws franchise one final time. He would give director Joseph Sargent complete creative control, and Sheinberg's wife Lorraine Gary would come out of retirement to reprise her role as grieving widow Ellen Brody, in return for an effects-heavy shark movie to be released in just nine months time. It would be set in the Bahamas, feature triple Oscar-nominee Michael Caine, and have its ending changed after its US release. Trigger warning for this part of the episode for the tragic story of child actor Judith Barsi, which references child abuse and murder. THANKS TO ANDREW FOR MAKING THE INTRO SONG. (soundcloud.com / andoryukesuta)@andoryukesuta It's a hot summer on Amity Island, a small community whose main business is its beaches. When new Sheriff Martin Brody discovers the remains of a shark attack victim, his first inclination is to close the beaches to swimmers. This doesn't sit well with Mayor Larry Vaughn and several of the local businessmen. Brody backs down to his regret as that weekend a young boy is killed by the predator. The dead boy's mother puts out a bounty on the shark and Amity is soon swamped with amateur hunters and fisherman hoping to cash in on the reward. A local fisherman with much experience hunting sharks, Quint, offers to hunt down the creature for a hefty fee. Soon Quint, Brody and Matt Hooper from the Oceanographic Institute are at sea hunting the Great White shark. As Brody succinctly surmises after their first encounter with the creature, they're going to need a bigger boat. Jaws is a 1975 American thriller film directed by Steven Spielberg, based on the 1974 novel by Peter Benchley. It stars Roy Scheider as police chief Martin Brody, who, with the help of a marine biologist (Richard Dreyfuss) and a professional shark hunter (Robert Shaw), hunts a man-eating great white shark that attacks beachgoers at a summer resort town. Murray Hamilton plays the mayor, and Lorraine Gary portrays Brody's wife. The screenplay is credited to Benchley, who wrote the first drafts, and actor-writer Carl Gottlieb, who rewrote the script during principal photography. Shot mostly on location at Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts, Jaws was the first major motion picture to be shot on the ocean and consequently had a troubled production, going over budget and schedule. As the art department's mechanical sharks often malfunctioned, Spielberg decided mostly to suggest the shark's presence, employing an ominous and minimalist theme created by composer John Williams to indicate its impending appearances. Spielberg and others have compared this suggestive approach to that of director Alfred Hitchcock. Universal Pictures' release of the film to over 450 screens was an exceptionally wide release for a major studio picture at the time, and it was accompanied by an extensive marketing campaign that heavily emphasized television spots and tie-in merchandise. Regarded as a watershed moment in motion picture history, Jaws was the prototypical summer blockbuster, and won several awards for its music and editing. It was the highest-grossing film of all time until the release of Star Wars two years later; both films were pivotal in establishing the modern Hollywood business model, which pursues high box-office returns from action and adventure films with simple high-concept premises, released during the summer in thousands of theaters and advertised heavily. Jaws was followed by three sequels (none of which involved Spielberg or Benchley) and many imitative thrillers, and in 2001, the Library of Congress selected it for preservation in the United States National Film Registry.

Close out the summer with the AMPM VIDEO crew as they go on vacation with Jaws a 1975 American thriller film directed by Steven Spielberg, based on the 1974 novel by Peter Benchley. It stars Roy Scheider as police chief Martin Brody who, with the help of a marine biologist (Richard Dreyfuss) and a professional shark hunter (Robert Shaw), hunts a man-eating great white shark that is attacking beachgoers at a summer resort town. Murray Hamilton plays the mayor, and Lorraine Gary portrays Brody's wife. The screenplay is credited to Benchley, who wrote the first drafts, and actor-writer Carl Gottlieb, who rewrote the script during principal photography. Shot mostly on location on Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts, Jaws was the first major motion picture to be shot on the ocean, and consequently had a troubled production with issues such as going over budget and past schedule. Universal Pictures' release of the film to over 450 screens was an exceptionally wide release for a major studio picture at the time, and it was accompanied by an extensive marketing campaign with a heavy emphasis on television spots and tie-in merchandise. We linked up with the Thor's Hour of Thunder crew to FINALLY get Scarlet Witch to watch Jaws. Mission Accomplished. Now, did she like it?
Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi and Thrasher discuss Jaws: The Revenge. Michael Caine fights the shark. A real dud, Jaws: The Revenge brings back Lorraine Gary as Ellen Brody who just can't seem to shake dangerous shark action. Mario Van Peebles makes for amusing comedic relief as Jake, but everything here has been done before and better in earlier Jaws films. Perhaps we'll get a notable Jaws sequel someday. Episode 313: The Crew's ending their Jaws retrospective with Joseph Sargent's Jaws: The Revenge. This time it's personal… a shark decides to follow the Brody family to the Bahamas and pick em off one by one. Were the other sharks in the franchise related to this shark, or did this shark have enough of this speciesist family? Who knows, this film is more interested in a Lorraine Gary and Michael Caine love subplot than reasoning out a silly explanation for why any of this is happening. Some of the Crew dislike it and some think it's the best sequel. They discusses… If you like our music intro, head over to Soundcloud and hear more amazing music from aquariusweapon. Just as you thought it was safe to go back to the failing franchise of ever decreasing shark movies centred around the unfortunate Brody family, the producers at Universal Studios manage to come up with a completely ridiculous story which forever ties the family with the sharks. It's a beautiful day, the beaches are open, and everyone is having a wonderful time! This 4th of July weekend the Brides are headed to Amity for the third season premiere, talking about all things Jaws! This movie is the big bad granddaddy of summer blockbusters, in which every single thing that could go wrong on a film shoot, did so in catastrophic fashion. Seriously, who thought to build a mechanical shark without testing it in the ocean? Along the way we discuss how this movie is basically a Law and Order episode starring a shark, the places this movie walks so Jurassic Park could run, the agonizing realization that Mayor Vaughn handled the shark attacks like Trump handled COVID-19, and the joys of Richard Dreyfuss and his "short guy energy." We also acknowledge that despite the film one hundred percent being every bit as effective and fun as ever, there is one shot in particular that really doesn't hold up. Once you see it, you can't unsee it. AMITY MEANS FRIENDSHIP! Jaws. 1975. Directed by Steven Spielberg. Written by Peter Benchley and Carl Gottlieb. Starring Roy Scheider, Richard Dreyfuss, Robert Shaw, Lorraine Gary, and Murray Hamilton.

After the Sugarland Express, Steven Spielberg directed two mega-successes, Jaws and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Combined, Jaws and Close Encounters earned almost $750,000,000 at the box office. That is in 1970s money. At this point, Universal, Spielberg's clout could get anything made. So why not make a comedy? Surely, he can climb the comedy hill as well as suspense and science-fiction. Fast-forward to the late 1970s. Spielberg decides to direct a comedy about further attacks by the Japanese in World War II. This movie is loaded with talented writers and actors. Robert Zemekis, Robert Stack, Bob Gale, Toshirô Mifune, Christopher Lee, Murray Hamilton, Lorraine Gary, John Belushi, Ned Beatty, John Candy, and much, much, more. Spielberg is the hottest director leading one of the (if not the) finest casts in movie history. Contrary to popular opinion, this movie did not flop. However, it was only a minor success. This week's Extra Milestone is so iconic that we may just need a bigger boat. Anthony Battaglia reunites with Sam to discuss two immensely significant blockbusters that have irreparably shaped the cinematic landscape. We start with a discussion on Steven Spielberg's Jaws, including our differing experiences with the movie, our appreciation for the writing and acting, differences from Peter Benchley's novel, a confession as to our shared fear of open water, and even an extremely hot take involving the infamous sequels! After we dry off from that conversation, we take an isolated look at Irvin Kershner's The Empire Strikes Back and how it changed Star Wars (and sequels in general) forever, why it maintains its effectiveness after dozens of viewings, why we can never view the Dagobah sequence the same way again, whether or not it contains the best lightsaber battle ever, and the dichotomy between good and evil that was solidified in this film. SHOW NOTES: 00:03:30 – Jaws 01:04:35 – The Empire Strikes Back NEXT WEEK: To close out the packed month of June, we're returning to the films of Billy Wilder with The Apartment, and we're assembling a generous handful of Cinemaholics alumni to do so! Vi avslutar vårterminen med något av det somrigaste som finns, nämligen Hajen-filmerna, och tar tempen på franchisens femton mest anmärkningsvärda element. In 1969, at age16, she dropped out of high school, left the Panthers, and focused on singing with local bands. In 1973, she joined the band Rufus. The first album in 1973 was a dud, but Stevie Wonder was so impressed by Chaka Khan's vocals, he wanted to write a song specifically for her. "Tell Me Something Good", written by Stevie, on their 1974 album won a Grammy. (He also played harmonica on 'I Feel For You'.). But, because of her increasing popularity the record label started calling the group Rufus "Featuring" Chaka Khan, (which was the title of their fourth album that had the hit single "Sweet Thing") and this caused tension in the band. She was back and forth with the group for a few years. Went solo in 1978 and became a legend. (10 Grammys, 8 of them solo) 93. [Audio Clip] 94. Open Comments: 95. Movie Scene 96. Notable releases 97. Most of the problems the gang faces here are typical of what kids from any community have to deal with. JAWS 2 is directed by Jeannot Szwarc and stars Roy Scheider, Lorraine Gary, Murray Hamilton, Joseph Mascolo, Jeffrey Kramer, Ann Dusenberry, Mark Gruner, and Gary Springer. Just when you thought it was safe to commit MASS MOVIECIDE!
VHS Rewind! Season 5 Episode 4 VHSRewind! - Kingdom of the Spiders (1977) With this week’s episode, VHS Rewind is correcting a major faux pas: we have never before tackled any of the output of one of the shining stars of our youth: Mr. Captain Kirk/T.J Hooker himself, William Shatner. The Shat was always around while we were growing up in the 1970s/1980s, not just because of STAR TREK and, later, T.J. HOOKER but because Shat was everywhere on TV: BARBARY COAST was another show he did which we watched because, well, Captain Kirk was on it; guest spots on every show we watched as kids: SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN; BARNABY JONES; HAWAII 5-O; IRONSIDE, KUNG FU; and guest spots on every tv show we didn’t watch as kids (PIONEER WOMAN, anyone? POLICE SURGEON??). Then there were some incredible TV movies like HORROR AT 37,000 FEET, DISASTER ON THE COASTLINER and the classic PRAY FOR THE WILDCATS (with that once of a lifetime cast of Andy Griffith (playing the dangerous psychotic for a change) + Shat + Robert Reed + Marjoe Gortner (!!) + Angie Dickinson & Lorraine Gary. Folks may forget that Shat’s theatrical features include more than the STAR TREK motion pictures: THE DEVIL’S RAIN; THE KIDNAPPING OF THE PRESIDENT; VISITING HOURS; AIRPLANE II: THE SEQUEL and, the subject our episode, KINGDOM OF THE SPIDERS. KINGDOM OF THE SPIDERS is part of the subgenre of films we love: the nature-runs-amok-and-strikes-back genre which includes DAYS OF THE ANIMALS (all animals attack); FROGS (frogs attack); NIGHT OF THE LEPUS (giant bunnies attck); SSSSSSS (sssssnakessss attack); PHASE IV (little ants attack): EMPIRE OF THE ANTS (giant ants attack); a few movies about bees attacking; SQUIRM (somehow, worms attack); and yes, you know JAWS, JAWS 2 etc. In this one, we get to see spiders attack. If the Shat seems to be dialing his Shatner-ness back somewhat (this isn’t the Shatner of STAR TREK V), remember that the Shat remains a singular actor and he gives us a lot to talk about. Shat certainly has a way with the ladies in this flick – part Donald Trump, part Pepe Le Peu, all creepy, sleazy sexual predator. We hope you take a listen to this week’s episode so you can hear our thoughts about KINGDOM OF THE SPIDERS and where, in the pantheon of spider flicks this one falls: is it as good as 1955’s TARANTULA? No but that 1955 flick is a personal, nostalgic favorite. Is KINGDOM OF THE SPIDERS as unintentionally funny as 1975’s THE GIANT SPIDER INVASION? No, alas. Does KINGDOM OF THE SPIDERS feature incredible rock-n-roll songs like 1958’s EARTH VS THE SPIDER. No, but there are plenty of songs in KINGDOM OF THE SPIDERS and we play every damn one of ‘em on the show because they are amazing.
This week on Black on Black Cinema, the guys are back to discuss the 1976 film starring a whole host of young actors Franklyn Ajaye, Bill Duke, George Carlin, Irwin Corey, Ivan Dixon, Antonio Fargas, Jack Kehoe, Clarence Muse, Lorraine Gary, The Pointer Sisters, and Richard Pryor. Car Wash is an episodic comedy about a day in the lives of the employees and the owner, Mr. B (Sully Boyar), of a Los Angeles, California car wash (filmed at a Westlake car wash at the corner of Rampart Blvd. and 6th St.)

This week, Zach is going to need a bigger boat, as we talk Jaws and the summer blockbuster. Jaws is a 1975 American thriller film[1] directed by Steven Spielberg and based on Peter Benchley's novel of the same name. The prototypical summer blockbuster, its release is regarded as a watershed moment in motion picture history. In the story, a giant man-eating great white shark attacks beachgoers on Amity Island, a fictional summer resort town, prompting the local police chief to hunt it with the help of a marine biologist and a professional shark hunter. The film stars Roy Scheider as police chief Martin Brody, Richard Dreyfuss as oceanographer Matt Hooper, Robert Shaw as shark hunter Quint, Murray Hamilton as the mayor of Amity Island, and Lorraine Gary as Brody's wife, Ellen. The screenplay is credited to both Benchley, who wrote the first drafts, and actor-writer Carl Gottlieb, who rewrote the script during principal photography.
