The Walter Paisley Movie House

John D. Hancock has directed everything from critically acclaimed theatrical productions, to award winning films, to made-for-TV movies, to producing his own movies in LaPorte, IN. His Academy Award nominated movies, Sticky My Fingers... Fleet My Feet and Bang the Drum Slowly both showcased his ability to ground the action in the reality of the film while humanizing even the vilest of characters. His 1971 cult classic horror pic, Let's Scare Jessica to Death continues to pull in new fans from all over the globe. John talks to me about his life, his work in Off Broadway theaters in NYC, his stint in Hollywood, and why he came back to Indiana. We talk about how music and directing relate to one another. He tells me stories about Charles Durning, Tyne Daly, and Michael Moriarty. We talk about him being fired from Jaws 2 only to be brought in to take over on final production of Wolfen. We commiserate on the many pitfalls of widowhood and how directing his late wife, Dorothy Tristan, in her last, deeply autobiographical film, which she also wrote, The Looking Glass, helped them both come to terms with the inevitable. Find out more about John and his Indiana-based production company here: Filmacres

Espresso fueled review, coming your way, strap in my magical film fans. Six films today, and holy flipping flip, five of them begin with the letter B, wait, 4 1/2. Let's roll! Starting things off today is Robert De Niro in 1973's (Bang the the drum slowly) I know I shouldn't expect a baseball film to be amazing, but the the bingo Darth Vader Richard Pryor one seemed to do ok, also it's well made and we certainly find things to talk about.  Next today is (Busting)1974. Here we have 2 mumbling and bumbling vice cops, played by 70's fav Elliot Gould and Robert Blake, former little rascal and probably another famous person who got away with murder. Very icky, though I think they again got him on a civil suit. Clean up yer trash Hollywood. Film is directed by Peter Hyams who also wrote this quintessential 70's L.A. film. I hope we can visit a location or 2 from this one sometime soon.  Moving on to (the Dion Brothers) 1974. Here is another film with 2 titles, it was originally called the gravy train, these damned films are always making things more confusing then they need to be. I was personally refreshed by the pure insanity of this one, not to build it up too much, but wow. Got a bootleg ish copy of this one, and it definitely needs a blu-ray a billion percent more than our last “Do not reccomend” film the night porter, Dominic shakes his head again, get it together people. This chaos stars Stacy Keach, Frederic Forrest, and Margo Kidder, with a story by jack Starrett. Film is about 2 brothers who give up their dead end jobs to rob an armed car so they can open up a high end seafood restaurant, and they don't seem to know shit about seafood. I do hope y'all can see this one someday, if ya know me I'll run it for you. Next up is (Black Moon) 1975. Imdb says that this is about a girl who goes to a mystical house to escape a gender war. Which as much as I like the film, makes it sound better than it is, to me, still nuts and fun to look at and go “WHAT?!”  Film is directed by a French guy, and that totally tracks. Onward to (Welcome home Brother Charles) 1975. This is the first of 3 films we're reviewing by rad director Jamaa Fanaka, 2 of which we are doin today. Here we have a very run of the mill plot about evil murderous LA cops and their attempt to brutally kill Charles, who survives and rids the world of these racists with his supernatural penis. Oh………. that doesn't sound boring, hmmm.  Jokes aside, yes this is another rad film that melted my brain. Not perfect, but I for one am happy it was written and filmed, and that we watched and reviewed this together.  Finally today we have the other Jamaa film ,(Emma Mae) 1976. many dvd's of this call it Black sister's revenge, again we acknowledge the confusion master, which is also the title of an amazing metal record as well. What to say about this Compton classic except, rad, very rad, and great. Also it's my best of the bunch and I do hope you enjoy our review, and all our reviews today. Please reach out and help spread the word if you can. Thank you as always for listening.

The baseball writings of Mark Harris are but one aspect of a varied career as a decidedly liberal, literary voice. Henry Wiggen is immortal, but where has the rest of the work of Mark Harris gone?

Hollywood has such an interesting, intimate relationship with America’s pastime, and it was a real treat to watch all of these baseball films—from classics like ‘Bull Durham’ and ‘A League of Their Own,’ to contemporary showstoppers like ‘Moneyball’ and ‘Everybody Wants Some,’ to obscure gems like ‘The History of the Seattle Mariners’ and ‘Bang the Drum Slowly.’ Also 'Fever Pitch,' which sucks, but I love it. Stick to the end to hear Brian & I make our World Series predictions, and if you haven’t yet voted on my Twitter polls for the listener bracket, STAY IN LINE AND VOTE! John Hancock is known for many films that could not be more different from each other.  His first feature, Let's Scare Jessica to Death, is a cult horror classic.  Bang the Drum Slowly, a baseball sports drama, featured a young Robert DeNiro as a catcher with a terminal illness. And the holiday classic Prancer is well, ya know, a holiday classic.  Hancock has also directed numerous plays, television shows, commercials and many other notable films, most recently the independent drama The Looking Glass which was filmed in Northern Indiana.   Paul Nelson talks with John about his childhood days romping through the fruit farm his family owned near LaPorte as well as his long career in film and television.  We learn a little about independent filmmaking and some of his personal preferences when tackling a media project.  This is a must listen episode for anyone with a passion for filmmaking and storytelling as well as those who want to know more about Indiana's notable alumni.

Steve tells us about growing up as a little street scamp on the mean streets of Chicago, Ryan is the only lapsed Baptist in the world with a patron saint, and the guys run their Sean Connery impressions straight into the ground. After building an empire with bootleg alcohol, legendary crime boss Al Capone (Robert De Niro) rules Chicago with an iron fist. Though Prohibition agent Eliot Ness (Kevin Costner) attempts to take Capone down, even his best efforts fail due to widespread corruption within the Windy City's police force. Recruiting an elite group of lawmen who won't be swayed by bribes or fear, including Irish-American cop Jimmy Malone (Sean Connery), Ness renews his determination to bring Capone to justice. WorldCat is the largest online catalog in the world, accessing the collections of more than 72,000 libraries in 170 countries and territories. Using the catalog, a subject search of particular sports turns up the following tally of book titles in the world’s libraries: Boxing: 5164, Hockey: 7083, Cricket: 10,881, Horse Racing: 11,933, Basketball: 12,875, Golf: 16,660, Football: 18,592, Soccer: 19,933, Baseball: 31,206 That’s a lot of baseball books. Fortunately, Ron Kaplan has cut that number down to something a bit more manageable in 501 Baseball Books Fans Must Read before They Die (University of Nebraska Press, 2013). As host of the Baseball Bookshelf blog and bibliography editor of the Society for American Baseball Research, Ron has read a few thousand books on the sport, give or take a couple hundred. His book doesn’t rank them. As he explains in the interview, it was hard enough to pare down his list from 1001 to 501. Instead, he offers an annotated guide, with books grouped by subject. There are instructional books and novels, data-based analyses and tributes to ballparks, biographies of the great players and memoirs of ordinary fans. Ron includes the familiar classics, like Mark Harris’ Bang the Drum Slowly and Jim Bouton’s Ball Four, and makes the case for books that deserve the status of a classic, such as Michael Bishop’s novel Brittle Innings. And Ron reveals a trove of older, overlooked gems: a 1915 instructional manual for college players, Bob Wood’s 1988 guide to ballpark food, and a compilation of Charles Schulz’s baseball-themed Peanuts comics (more than 600 strips when the book was published in 1977). Ron’s expert guide will help in your choices of summer baseball reading. Indeed, you’ll be eager to start on your baseball list after putting down Ron’s book. That is, if you can put it down. Ron’s thoughtful choice of titles and his insightful summaries of the selections make this not only a useful introduction to the baseball library but also a worthy–and enjoyable–addition to its shelves.
