Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Monday 23rd July edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport.   MICROLINO EV LOOKS POISED TO HIT EUROPEAN ROADS SOON "You may soon see these little electric runabouts flitting around European cities. The flat-out-adorable Microlino is a modern riff on BMW's Isetta, the three-wheeled, front-door bubble car from the 1950s" writes Chris Paukert at cnet.com: "Micro Mobility Systems AG, the Swiss electric scooter company behind the project, has announced that the under-8-foot-long Microlino has just passed the final tests for EU homologation. That's right, it's now road-legal in Europe. The version powered by the 8kWh battery achieved 78 miles in testing, while the 14.4kWh version managed over 125 miles. Those may not seem like particularly impressive range figures, but they should be plenty for this strictly city-minded vehicle."   RENAULT ZOE CLIMBS TO #1 IN GERMANY "The German plug-in electric car (PEV) market grew 23% in June, to 5,709 registrations, with plug-in hybrids (+25%) and fully electric cars (+21%) growing at a similar pace. In 2018, all-electrics are reaching 1% share, while plug-in hybrids have also grown their share to 1%, resulting in a total PEV share of 2%." reported Jose Pontes for Clean Technica: "But the most interesting story on the fuels mix is the Titanic-like drop of diesel vehicles sales. In June, their sales sank 16%. The most popular EV this year so far is the Renault Zoe"   IN JUNE, OVER 78,000 PLUG-IN ELECTRIC CARS WERE SOLD IN CHINA But from Germany, to China, let's supercharge those numbers. "In total, some 78,260 New Energy Cars were sold at 3.1% market share. It’s the world’s largest plug-in car market with nearly 373,000 cars sold during the first six months." according to Mark Kane at InsideEVs   TESLA POLICE CARS START TO PATROL IN LUXEMBOURG com has news of yet another police force going electric: "Police in Luxembourg have added two Tesla electric cars to their fleet, hoping that their speedy acceleration will help them nab more criminals while also trimming the tiny country's carbon emissions"   TESLA MIGHT SOON HAVE A 'NEAR-MONOPOLISTIC' HOLD ON THE EV MARKET Raul Hernandez notes that: "According to a team of Berenberg analysts led by Alexander Haissl, Tesla's competitors have opted for a "low-risk, low-investment" strategy when it comes to electric vehicle manufacturing. That will leave Tesla in the driver's seat with its all-in approach." The analysts write: "With no clear pathway to high-volume EV [electric vehicle] production for these OEMs [original equipment manufacturers] before the mid-2020s Tesla will be given a near-monopolistic opportunity to gain market share and outcompete the incumbent automotive industry." They continue to say: "Tesla/Panasonic continue to exhibit a clear advantage on cell and pack technology compared to all peers, on chemistry, cooling and cost," write Berenberg analysts. "Tesla's small and actively tube-cooled cells, which are not currently replicated and are unlikely to be so by competitors, drives significantly better residual values and cost-of-ownership advantages." "Tesla will invest roughly $32.7 billion into electric vehicle projects over the next five years, which is 40% more than Daimler and Volkswagen combined, according to Berenberg estimates.   MODEL 3 ARRRIVES AT CLEAN TECHNICA Kyle Field at Clean Technica has a Model 3!: "One of our early reservations turned into a car this week as we took delivery of the CleanTechnica Tesla Model 3 at the Tesla Santa Barbara showroom. It’s a Long Range Black Model 3 with the Premium Upgrade Package!" He says: "Let’s talk looks. Yes, I know not everyone likes the looks of the car – especially the dash – but I absolutely love it. It feels so high end and sleek on the inside that it just makes me smile every time I get in. It’s simple enough to not feel cluttered but still manages to do everything I need it to do."   MODEL 3 TRACK MODE "YouTuber Marques Brownlee recently had an opportunity to drive the Model 3 Performance on a track, and he pointed out an experimental "Track Mode" that takes the gloves off" spotted Jon Fingas at Engadget: "The in-testing feature switches on "stability control and powertrain settings configured for track driving," and it's no secret what that means: you can drift, understeer and otherwise push the electric car past its usual limits. It's not certain when this will reach customers, or even what the final name will be. And as enthusiasts will tell you, it's not a novel concept -- many sports cars have the option to turn off handholding features. It's still relatively rare among street-going electric vehicles, though, and serves as another signal that Tesla is interested in EV performance beyond straight-line acceleration."   COMMUNITY NIO EP9   You can listen to all previous 188 episodes of this podcast on iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, YouTube, TuneIn, Stitcher, and the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. Today's Commexis Cast discusses Google's release of a podcast app for Android devices with plans for integrate artificial intelligence to offer transcriptions and other features. Google released the new app, called Google Podcasts, yesterday on the Google play store (click here to get it now), and there is no word that the app will be released for iOS. According to Jon Fingas on Engadget,  the app "will sync across virtually everything Google, including Assistant, Home speakers and search." Certainly an advantage over Apple's own native podcast app. But that isn't the only potential advantage the app has. In the future, Google plans on integrating the app with artificial intelligence that will offer transcriptions of podcasts for listeners, as well as give additional relevant links and information based on the podcast and topic. The release of a podcast app, and the additional A.I. functionality planned, signal the first step to Google putting a greater importance on audio and podcasts. Zack Reneau-Wedeen, product manager for Google Podcasts, spoke with BuzzFeed News, saying, “In the last few years, we've seen a huge explosion in the creativity, variety, and the quality of podcasts available." Google will also be working with an independent global advisory board and industry experts on a plan to increase the diversity in podcasting. Buzzfeed News' Pranav Dixit wrote that this initiative aims to "bring in more creators from underrepresented backgrounds such as women, people of color, and people from other countries into podcasting." Reneau-Weeden told Buzzfeed News, "When we talk about doubling the size of the podcast listening population worldwide, the growth needs to come from around the world where most of the opportunity is going to be. It can't only come from America.” Phillip and Matt are both looking forward to seeing how the artificial intelligence features work on the new app, and are also excited to see how Google's podcast diversity initiative goes. Today's cast: Phillip Brooks (Commexis Lead Strategist) and Matthew McGrorty (Commexis Videographer/Podcaster). Join the Commexis team as we add context to these stories for the busy CMO. It’s Monday 11th June 2018 and this is your EV News Daily. Good morning, good afternoon and good evening! Wherever you're listening around the world, a very warm welcome from London, UK.  Here is today’s news about electric cars and the future of transport. My name is Martyn Lee and I go through every EV article online so you don’t have to.   This is show 147, next Thursday is 150. I like a round number so if there’s anything you’d like to hear more of or less of, to add or improve, please do tweet @EVNewsDaily or email hello@evnewsdaily.com   Congratulations to Fully Charged who sold 1000 tickets in one day along last weekend as word spread.   Formula E and no spoilers! Circuit racing returned to Switzerland as the ABB FIA Formula E Championship raced through the city streets and lakefront boulevards of Zurich, host city of the 2018 Julius Baer Zurich E-Prix. And it was carnage! The championship battle is well and truly alive. There were countless overtakes, controversies, penalties. I won't mention the winners of the race or the championship for a day or so in case you're catching up.   TESLA WILL START ENABLING FULL SELF-DRIVING FEATURES IN AUGUST "Elon Musk has revealed that Autopilot version 9 should arrive in August, and Tesla will "begin to enable" the full autonomous driving features with that release. The company has "rightly focused entirely on safety" with previous versions, Musk said, but now it's time to spread its wings." reports Jon Fingas at Engadget: "However, the "full self-driving capability" package should actually mean something once Autopilot 9 arrives and the more advanced features kick in. There may be some situations where it's genuinely acceptable to let go of the steering wheel, even if it's limited to parking lots and other private spaces."   NORWAY SMILES FOR TESLA AND NISSAN InsideEvs always has their eyes on the sales prize and Mark Kane says "Plug-in electric car sales in Norway increased in May and now exceed a cumulative level of 200,000 new registrations since 2012. The best selling car in Norway this year is the Nissan LEAF, which took the lead after a spectacular registration record of 2,172 in March. Since then, sales dialed back to three-digit numbers – 997 in April and 644 in May. During the first five months of 2018, Tesla significantly increased its sales in Norway of both the Model S and Model X"   VW AND GOOGLE WORK TOGETHER ON BATTERIES In 2017 Google and VW announced their plans to work together using new machine learning process projects to further advance artificial intelligence. Now, we have some news from Chris Randall at Electrive regarding custom batteries: " VW announced that they had first succeeded in simulating the structure of industry-relevant molecules on a quantum computer. The simulation is relevant for the development of more powerful batteries, particularly in the area of EV batteries. Long term, the partners plan to be able to simulate the entire chemical process of a whole battery on a quantum computer. The goal is to develop a “tailor-made” battery; a configurable blueprint ready for production. The simulation requires particularly powerful computing."   TATA MOTORS’ ELECTRIC CARS TO HAVE 400 KILOMETRE BATTERY RANGE "Tata Motors has revealed that its future range of electric cars under the Alpha and Omega platforms will have a range of around 300-400 kilometers per charge." says Cartoq: "The Indian automaker currently sells a solitary electric car – the Tigor Electric – to the Indian government. Soon, the Tigor Electric and its hatchback sibling – the Tiago Electric – will go on sale in India for private car buyers as well. However, the range of the Tigor and Tiago Electric cars are around 100-120 kilometers/charge. Tata Motors plans to use the Tigor and Tiago Electric cars as a stop-gap arrangement before its new range of electric cars under the Alpha and Omega platforms arrive." "These cars are expected to have a range of about 300-400 kilometers/charge and will run on 320 volt batteries. A fast charge option will be standard, and the Tata electric cars running 320V batteries will also be very quick off the block."   £12.50 LONDON ULTRA-LOW EMISSION ZONE London's Mayor, Sadiq Khan, last week confirmed the London Ultra-Low Emission Zone is be growing larger than previously announced. It will now reach the North and South circular roads, but not until October 2021. For now, the zone is limited to central London which goes into effect April 2019. If you drive into the Zone in a car which doesn't comply, you'll be charged £12.50 a day to enter the ULEZ. At the moment you can drive into town at weekends and bank holidays and not face the existing Congestion Charge, but the ULEZ fees apply 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It's harsh on diesels particularly and if it's not Euro 6 or newer it's going to be penailsed. The office of the mayor says it remove the dirtiest, most polluting vehicles, and affect 100,000 cars, 35,000 vans and 3,000 lorries a day.   STENA LINE INTRODUCING BATTERY-ELECTRIC OPERATION TO FERRY Stena Line is a big ferry company here in Europe, they have 38 vessels and operate 21 routes in Northern Europe. Green Car Congress has the details on: "Stena recently signed with Callenberg Technology Group for 1 MWh of batteries which will be installed on Stena Jutlandica which operates between Gothenburg and Frederikshavn. Stena envisions three phases to the project. In step one, due this summer, the 1 MWh, 3,000 kW battery pack, which will be located on the weather deck, will be used for bow thrusters and manoeuvring when berthing in port. In step two, a 20 MWh battery pack will be connected to the propellers; Stena Jutlandica will be able to be operated on electricity within around 10 nautical miles, equal to the distance between Göteborg and Vinga Lighthouse. In step three, the battery capacity will be further expanded to 50 MWh, enabling about 50 nautical miles."   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Last month, a man used Facebook’s live video feature to confess to a murder, shortly after videos were uploaded that showed him announcing his intent and committing the act. Facebook broke down the timeline of this series of videos, revealing that they had suspended the person’s account in approximately 2 hours or less, saying “we need to do better.” But what is a reasonable expectation for the public, when it comes to people who use live video to gain attention for their violent acts, against themselves or others? Heather Merrick, community experience manager at group video chat service Airtime, joins the show to discuss. Plus: How allowing users to switch video chats from public to private, and back, complicates community management efforts What happened when Tumblr switched replies off on their platform Unethical behavior and the implications of getting caught Big Quotes “It’s nice to have that option, [to flag content simply because you don’t like it,] because it’s essentially, ‘We want you to feel comfortable.’ It’s the comfort option. ‘Maybe I just don’t feel like seeing this slightly icky image that isn’t really offending me deeply but isn’t really my vibe today. I don’t want to see that.’ You can hide it, and I think that’s useful. You don’t necessarily want to be getting someone else in trouble. I think some moderation tools can feel really serious, like if you’re blocking someone on various platforms. … Are you notifying the person that you’ve blocked them? If so, that’s kind of like a big step in that relationship, right?” -@heatheremerrick “Ambiguity is not usually the friend of community.” -@patrickokeefe “In the world of engineering, it’s so hard to nail down an exact date for when something’s going to happen because something unexpected will always arise, so I completely understand the need to have somewhat ambiguous timelines. I think if you were to say, ‘Hey, we’re embarking on this gigantic project and we guarantee it will be live by July 3rd,’ you’re going to let people down. … There’s somewhere in between, where you can sort of be like, ‘Hey, this is going to take us a few months and we promise we’ll give you updates along the way, so stay tuned. Two weeks from today, we’ll let you know.’ That kind of thing. It could be considered overcommunicating.” -@heatheremerrick About Heather Merrick Heather Merrick is an experienced community and support team manager. Several disturbing incidents have been streamed on Facebook Live, including one of a mentally disabled man being severely assaulted. Business Matters asks, whether with other sites like Periscope too, live broadcasting is now open to all - so is this a welcome expansion of free speech or a risky way of giving a vast audience to extremists and criminals? Jon Fingas, associate editor at Engadget comments. The farming community in Britain receive more than three and a half billion dollars a year from Brussels. But this will change when Britain leaves the European Union. Brexit is the theme for two farming conferences taking place at the moment. The BBC's Caz Graham got the views of some young farmers there about the uncertainty of what Brexit will mean for them. Roger Hearing is joined by Jason Abbruzzese, a Business Reporter at Mashable in New York, and Rosie Blau, China correspondent for the Economist in Beijing for comment throughout the programme.
