Karen Crouse is an award-winning journalist, acclaimed author, and former collegiate swimmer at the University of Southern California. A New York Times sports writer for 16 years, Karen first entered the world of newspaper reporting when she joined the Savannah News-Press, becoming the first woman to work in its sports department. In 2018, Karen released her first book Norwich: One Tiny Vermont Town's Secret to Happiness and Excellence, which explores how a small town in Vermont has prioritized holistic athlete development over performance yet has produced more Olympians per capita than any other place in the country. Karen joins Nick to discuss how youth sports has become hyper-competitive as opposed to communal, the lessons she learned spending time in Norwich, and how her career working with elite athletes has shaped her commitment to telling stories that humanize athletes.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Golf's history of exclusion is to blame, and it manifests itself in ways that are obvious and subtle. Episode 4 of the Lying Four podcast examines golf's culture of discrimination against women from four different perspectives: Karen Crouse of The New York Times, architect and former ASGCA president Jan Bel Jan, the women of Grueter Golf, and Craig Annis of the USGA.

In Episode 39 of the Mr. Wine Guy Podcast I had the privilege of sitting down with Karen Crouse, Owner and Vintner of Mount Veeder Magic Vineyards out of the Mount Veeder AVA of Napa Valley. In this episode Karen talks about a unique service she provides where she helps clients create their own custom wine. Within this service clients purchase the wine, bottles, labels, capsules, and corks through Karen's personable, consultative services. This gives her clients an opportunity to create a wine that represents them and everything they stand for, and also gives them an opportunity to live vicariously through the eyes of a Vintner. Karen talks about Jeff Fontanella and what it means to have him on board as winemaker and Jeff's ability to craft incredible mountain driven wines such as hers. Karen also talks about what it's like to be a board member for the Mount Veeder AVA council and what it means to help spread the word and support local vintners within her community. With everyhing being said, the one thing you're going to LOVE more than anything in this podcast is Karen's personality and charisma throughout the entire interview. Today we’re talking with New York Times sportswriter, Karen Crouse, about her new book, Norwich.Norwich is a tiny town in Vermont that has produced eleven Olympians, and Karen’s extremely well-written book looks into how it is that this little town has managed to produce so many successful athletes. But Karen is also exploring far bigger, universal questions about the relationship of athletic achievement and personal well-being, and really, I think her book Norwich is best understood as a blueprint for how to raise and train athletes to be more than mere medal-winning machines. Norwich is a book about community, about parenting, and how to go about helping kids become fully-developed people who are well positioned to lead happy, healthy lives.Karen and I also discuss the current state of the Olympic Games, since Karen has been to and has covered a bunch of them and will be at the Olympics again next month, and she and I talk about how her time spent with all-time achievers like Michael Phelps and Tiger Woods has informed her thoughts on the price of greatness.TOPICS & TIMES:How do you sum up what this book is about? Host Cyrus Webb welcomes author Karen Crouse to #ConversationsLIVE to discuss her new book NORWICH and what she hopes readers take away from it.
A small town in Vermont, with only 3,000 full-time inhabitants has put at least one athlete in the every Olympic games since 1984, including the highest ever finisher in the ski jump from the US. What are they doing to create such elite athletes? The answer has nothing to with facilities or coaches… Bio Karen Crouse is a graduate of the University of Southern California, where she earned a varsity letter in swimming. She started her newspaper career at the Savannah News-Press, where she was the first woman to grace the sports department, and worked at seven other dailies before being hired by the New York Times in 2005.
