On today's flashback edition of the cast, we throw it back to 2018 and my interview with The Starting Line frontman Kenny Vasoli. We touched base to talk about the beginnings of his side projects Person L and Vacationer and how that filled the times in between playing shows with TSL. One of my favorite interviews I've ever done in the history of my podcast, Kenny was also the subject of the very first written post I ever did for MusicBoxPete when it launched in 2009: my review of Person L's full length debut "The Positives". I had interviewed Kenny multiple times in chat transcripts over the years with Person L and Vacationer, but this was my first time chatting with him over the phone and in length about music. I've met him multiple times over the years during his jaunts in Boston and he has been nothing short of an amazing musician and a great friend, and that means a lot especially having been of a fan his since my high school years and was a big part of my formative years and was solely responsible for establishing my love for pop-punk music.
THANK YOU KENNY AND BRITAIN FOR COMING ON VACATIONER - MAKING OF CHERISH FILM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ra2tGhNx8Zw&t=0s

In this episode, bassist and vocalist Kenny Vasoli delves into the creative process behind "Island”, The Starting Line's highest ever charting single. The song is from the band's 2007 full-length Direction, which was produced by the renowned Howard Benson. Kenny shares the never-before-heard demo — as well as tons of intriguing insight — into the creation of a song that sounds just as great now as the day it was released. On today's retro episode of the cast, we go back to 2018 and my interview with Kenny Vasoli. Obviously you know him from his days with The Starting Line, on this interview we touched upon his current band Vacationer and talk about his evolving musical tastes over the years, and how that has transformed him into a better and more musically diverse musician capable of achieving far greater wavelengths than ever before. We touched upon his evolution from his other band Person L and what he learned from his time there, plus we delved into the creation of his most recent album Mindset and his thought process going into that. It's not too often you get to interview your heroes, but this one was an all time high point for me.

Keith and Tommy sit down with fellow Bucks County native Kenny Vasoli to discuss his history in the Bucks County scene, the formation of the Starting Line, the band's history, their rise to popularity around the world and stories from the road. We also discuss Kenny's post hardcore band Person L and his current project Vacationer, his discovery of the world of electronic music and what to expect next. We also talk about the progression of Such Gold and what it was like to work with some iconic producers and pop-punk legend Kenny Vasoli of The Starting Line. We had a blast talking about how Such Gold-Stand Tall was the record that kicked off Mikey's vinyl addiction and how Tom's band (Ink & Lead) was fortunate to open for them on Long Island. Over the years our paths have continued to criss and cross and I couldn't be happier that they do. You may know Kenny from his various projects Vacationer, The Starting Line and or Person L. This chat was so lovely and even know we are totally buds, I am such a big fan of his music that I was a bit giddy to pick his brain here about his creative journey. Enjoyyyyyyyyy it! photo by : Matt Schwartz ( @shehitpause ) Quick note : This interview took place in September and we talk very briefly about his beloved dog Waldo who was going through a bit of a mysterious health problem at the time and sadly Waldo passed away about a few weeks later from cancer. The Cool Guys™ get their Italian appetites ready as they take on the debut studio album by The Starting Line, Say It Like You Mean It, with lead singer Kenny Vasoli and producer Mark Trombino. Ken Vasoli (Vacationer) documents the last day of tour with Spencer Petersen (Sego.) They trade stories, perspectives and tunes. This one is a big fat two-parter, the weary musicians catch up via cellphone relay to touch base and finish the discussions at hand. Plenty for your ears and brain to chew on with here. Enjoy, you lucky duck, you!
After much deliberation, returning guest Ken Vasoli (Vacationer) and the Brians decide to listen to Big Bam Boom by local legends Hall and Oates. E and mails: volcanovinyl@gmail.com Tig Tam Tweets: @volcanovinyl #vv183
In an attempt to make amends for playing Soft Cell for returning guest Ken Vasoli (Vacationer) on a previous episode, Brian spins a deep cut 80s selection Hats by The Blue Nile for Brian and Ken. Go peep the new Vacationer record Mindset and check out KV's podcast Wax On. E-Nile: volcanovinyl@gmail.com Blitter: @volcanovinyl #vv182
Volcano shaman Ken Vasoli returns to the podcast to show Brian and Brian a record that he discovered during tracking for the new Vacationer album Mindset, You Can Have What You Want by Papercuts. Apologies for all of the extremely baloney, ash-covered, technical and/or non-technical difficulties! E-cuts: volcanovinyl@gmail.com You Can Tweet What You Want: @volcanovinyl #vv181

Ken and Miss Lina spin the deepest of the deep records whilst relaxing infinitely. Wax On is back in business baby!

Ken and Lina explore the music from the silver screen. Spinning LPs that originate from India, Japan, Brazil, back to the American tropics and mainland. Let's all go to the movies.
In the wake of yesterday's election results, Ken and Lina look to the record collection for source of positivity. They replenish morale with love songs, vibraphone funk, heartfelt soul and a way-deep track with questionable pronunciation.
Ken digs through his collection with Miss Lina to select 10 deep cuts that all come from Philadelphia's lush music scene. No stone left unturned, from soul to funk to disco to punk. Feel the love.
Ken is joined by his longtime friend and collaborator, Brian Schmutz (The Starting Line, Legendary Divorce, Inkling, Volcano Vinyl.) They both selected five tracks from their vinyl collections to play for each other, as well as compare notes.. most of which are fuzzy. This is a long one that hears from the likes of folk icons, German DJs and soul legends. Brian’s Podcast: illdale.com/volcano-vinyl
Ken is joined once again by Lina. They sort through the home record collection to single out some of the loveliest ladies to ever grace a microphone. English, British, American, Brazilian and Icelandic...all so lovely. Dig it!
Ken and Lina sit by the turntable to enjoy and discuss some of the chillest songs found within their record collection. This episode's 10 track playlist features instrumental deep cuts from post-rock, neo-psychedelia, electronic, Brazilian and soundtrack LPs. Relax to the max.
You can thank Cloud Nothings and Desaparecidos for The Starting Line’s most recent 7” entitled “Anyways.” Kenny spoke highly of those two bands and how it got him excited to write in the style of The Starting Line again. It’s only fitting that Kenny is the next podcast after Jon Bunch spoke so highly of him in episode 57. Kenny straddles that line of being old enough to know the past but be involved in the mid 00 emo wave and has some amazing perspective on it. I learned a lot and have a great respect for his music. Kenny Vasoli has a beer with me in the backyard of Brouwerij Lane in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. While you may know him from The Starting Line, Vasoli has been making "nu-hula" tunes with his band Vacationer since 2010. He describes how the group used audience reactions to their live set to inform the mood of their more-realized follow-up LP, Relief. He also explains how he got into Polynesian music, what it's like singing about a former love, and why he wouldn't mind being the new Jimmy Buffett. vacationermusic.com drypaintsigns.com

Ep. 103 - Kenny Vasoli from Philadelphia's Vacationer (and formerly from the Starting Line) comes to Bronson Island to talk food with us this week. He tells Zach his favorite places to eat on tour, why he doesn't like to eat meat with bones, and how easy it is for him to stay gluten free on tour (spoiler: he does his best to stay away from stroopwafels). PLUS Kenny gives us a great tip on what munchies to pair with your weed. Vacationer's new album "Relief" is out now. Get more info at www.vacationermusic.com
