Eric Nam is an accidental K-pop star. Growing up in Atlanta, and graduating from college in Boston, he did not expect that in his twenties he's sign to a K-pop label, be named 2016 Man of the year by GQ Korea, and become a go-to television personality in South Korea. His music, imbued with his charisma and charm has charted globally. As fun as it is, the K-pop machine can be a real grind — it churns through young people not unlike the NFL draft. Nam is unusually candid about this experience, likely because he decided to quit the system, and take his blossoming music career independent. On his second all English full length album There And Back Again Nam has full creative control, and all the burdens of sustaining a solo music career. Nam spoke with Switched On Pop co-host Charlie Harding about what it is like to go from K-pop star to indie musician. SONGS DISCUSSED Eric Nam - Ooh Ooh, Heavens Door, Good For You, Honestly, Can't Help Myself (feat. LOCO), Lost On Me, I Don't Know You Anymore, Wildfire, Love Die Young Lee Hyori - 10 Minutes MOMOLAND - BBoom BBoom Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

In the west, a lot of Asians don't realize how popular Kpop really is. The boy band BTS has gotten so big that they've single-handedly changed the perception of male attractiveness, especially around the world. More girls are wanting "Korean" men than ever before. We got Ezra Yao on the podcast to discuss how he made a transformation from a normal looking Asian guy into a Kpop star, and how that completely changed his life. Here's our second ever interview with Kpop Idol Dabit. You may not know but the musician debuted in the boy band 24K, a group that we have supported for years on our 24/7 radio stream. In this interview Siobhan speaks to the performer about his career from day dot, the various ways he has involved himself in the music industry, being a part of a group versus working solo and so much more. We even get to hear about his supposed haunted house in Ohio. Yickes! As a final treat the musician performs a cover of one of our favorite Kpop classics, Taeyang's Eyes, Nose, Lips. We hope you enjoy what you see!
Michael Baxter, guest host of this week's podcast is a friend, music producer, but more importantly- the guy who yells at Paula on a daily basis to get things done! Also, Anne shares a childhood dream that she truly thought was her calling.
This week Kevin tells you what it's like to debut in a K-pop group. It's an amazing thing because you spend years training, competing against other trainees, and you never know when you'll get kicked out of the company. You sort of do auditions every weekend. Kevin was also the only trainee from overseas so he had to learn the Korean culture too. It's hard (but really rewarding when you debut). What makes a good rookie group? Always be polite to your seniors, greet them whenever you see them. Every group has their own signature greeting.
This week Kevin Kim talks to Sam Hammington about welcoming his second baby into the world. Sam says he couldn't be happier. His wife went into surgery at about 9:30 Korean time for a C-section. They now have a healthy new member in their family. He's two days old, everyone's happy and healthy. The couple are looking forward to the future with William and his new sibling. Happy times.
This week on the Fan Forum we chat about the MAMA's illegal voting controversy. Millions of votes have been removed, it's affected the top results and fans are not reacting well. Mnet hasn't clarified what an 'illegal vote' means yet. There is still plenty of time to get proper votes in though, so you can keep voting for you favourite artists! The fan forum are hoping for a Western and K-pop collab at the MAMAs....who would you want to see on stage together?
This week Kevin Kim spills on how a K-pop album is made. It starts with thinking about what song they want. They have huge meetings with producers and staff where they think about the concept and music genre. They listen to a bunch of demo songs and decide which one they want to use. Sometimes, after the pre-recording, it won't sound right so they'll change their mind on the song. It can sound really different after the recording.Once they decide on the songs they want to promote, they choose a concept and try on a lot of clothes. The stylist brings out all different outfits for them to try; sometimes they pick and choose, and other times the stylist will show them photos of what's on trend. Once they've chosen clothes they go straight to a photoshoot for the album. Then the members write thank you notes, and sign them, to put in the special albums. Kevin thinks he's signed more than 50-100 thousand times.
This week Kevin Kim tells us how he got in to his company, which led him to become a K-pop star. He sent a resume with all his details and profiles and things he'd done. He filmed on a video and cassette tape, which makes him feel old because people don't use those anymore. He sent everything in a package to Star Empire; they liked him so he went in and did a little 'audition' where he sang 'Bright Midnight', and they wanted him to stay in Korea and do training with the other trainees, and that's how he got in to the industry.
This week Kevin Kim says Happy Chuseok to you all and spills on how he celebrates the holiday. He spends time with family, eating a lot of delicious food like rice cakes, with red bean paste, Chinese pancakes and beef ribs. He plays a lot of games too; a Korean version of Monopoly and a kicking shuttle-cock game (but he's not very good). At this time of the year he always gets asked when he's going to get married. Cue: nervous laugh...
This week Kevin explains that he had to take Korean classes when he first became an idol, even though he could speak Korean. He said his pronunciation wasn't right at the beginning and he needed to speak more fluently. He had to practice and take Korean classes to get the Korean accent and right pronunciation.
This week Prince Mak gives himself some advice about being a single man, especially on Valentine's Day in China. China has multiple Valentine's Days and Prince Mak hates them. He'd say to himself, "Fighting" and "go for it." He wants to know, what do you do for the day of love?
This week, Prince Mak spills all the deets about the life of a K-pop trainee. Each company's trainee regime is different, but every trainee will have to stick through some kind of rigorous program in order to become K-pop idols. For Prince Mak, he had to get up at 5:30AM every day and train for the whole day until 1AM. Various lessons will be packed into each day, such as vocal, dancing, acting (which is essential since this is where most money is made), and language lessons. Trainees will have to work hard at these lessons because there will be regular tests, which will gauge the progress of each trainee. For younger trainees, they will have to juggle both school and lessons.Sadly, despite all the work put in by trainees, not everyone will be able to debut as a K-pop idol. Some will quit partway through training, but on average, only 1 in 3 trainees will ultimately debut as an idol.
On this week's Friday Fan Forum, we're talking about EXO's comeback! The boys haven't comeback since August last year, so the fans reveal what they're most excited about. The teasers have been trending worldwide online, and it looks like it will be a different concept for EXO. Could it be the best EXO album ever? Kevin chats about getting fit for a comeback. We want to get in the know!
This week on SBS PopAsia Live, Kevin Kim talks about whether foreigners can be K-pop stars. He says anyone can be a pop star if they're passionate enough and work hard. Our handsome K-pop star also let's us in on what type of girl he's attracted to...
9Muses chat to Kevin Kim about their favourite artists, what they want to try (besides singing), who they want to collab with, what they do in their spare time and a special shout-out to Aussie fans.
This week Prince Mak talks about the differences between the South Korean pop music industry and the Western pop music industry (mainly in America). In Korea singers are known as 'idols' and they don't always have to be really good singers; they have to have a range of skills. Korea's 'trainee' system doesn't exist in America, because the Western pop industry chooses artists' on their talents, whereas in Korea they believe hard work and training is just as (if not more) important than natural skill. Talent shows are different between the two countries, K-pop groups have 'visual' members who are based on looks, and K-pop groups always have a rapper, and rapping parts, whereas Western pop groups don't always have rap in their pop music. Prince Mak has more examples...
This week on SBS PopAsia Live with Kevin Kim, learn about what K-pop stars do to keep fit and healthy. They have certain training regimes to get the right amount of muscle. Kevin also tells us what they eat daily. *Takes notes*
Kevin Kim spoke to K-pop star contestant Kriesha Chu and she gave some advice to those who want to go on a reality show, plus a special message to her Aussie fans.

In 2015, rookie girl group, Twice, enjoyed a successful debut that garnered them millions of fans. Three weeks into 2016, however, it would be difficult to imagine even a casual fan of Kpop for whom Chou Tzuyu, sixteen-year-old member of Twice, was not a household name. Through a baffling series of events, Tzuyu would become a beacon of independence for millions, a symbol of hatred and betrayal for millions more, and a misunderstood focal point for much of the rest of the world. Without trying, this sixteen-year-old girl would affect the outcome of the Taiwanese presidential election, and in the process, change the business of Kpop forever. On today's episode, Tim and Zander tell the story of Chou Tzuyu in their most serious podcast yet.
