In this episode we interview with the lovely Ladybeard of BABYBEARD and discuss his idol origins, life in Japan, his achievements thus far and dreams.
nterview by Kris PetersWhat do you get when you cross a pro wrestler, a metal head and a penchant for cross-dressing? If you answered Ladybeard then you are 1000% correct. For there is only one.Because one walking ray of sunshine is all the world needs.Since blowing up the Japanese internet in 2014 and then taking on the world with his first single Nippon Manju the following year, Adelaide-born Ladybeard has quickly become - and, most importantly, remained - an exuberant spark of life in an otherwise bleak musical landscape. His vision first of creating and then of embracing the persona that is Ladybeard has seen him traverse the globe as a solo artist but even the best of us get lonely sometimes and thus Ladybeard sought companionship in the form Japanese idols SUZU and MAHRI to form his current group Babybeard in 2020.Combining colourful Japanese pop culture and relentlessly cute pigtails with heavy metal, pro-wrestling and choreographed dancing, Babybeard's uniquely high-energy performances have captured the hearts and ears of all ages no matter what part of the world they have blessed, but now it's Australia's turn when Babybeard arrive in this country in the coming days for their Adorable Assault On Australia Tour, kicking off in Adelaide this Friday. It promises to be an entertaining, family-suited string of shows and is a fitting homecoming for a man and his band. But don't let us convince you of the above, listen to the words of Ladybeard himself, and you will find it impossible to refute."We are here to tell you dear, beautiful Australians that Ladybeard is coming on tour to Australia with his group Babybeard this June and July," he declared. "So we all need to get a bit excited Australia. We need to raise the tempo because we're not here for siesta time. We're here to SCREAM with a man in pigtails and two Japanese females. It's me, with two adorable Japanese ladies next to me, and we're all dancing. The girls are singing, I'm SCREAMING. It's like BabyMetal but with a giant, bearded, cross-dressing Aussie in the middle. That's exactly what it's like. The group is called Babybeard - so it's Ladybeard plus babies equals Babybeard, it's very straightforward - and we're coming for you. We've been trying to make this Australia tour happen for a long time. We put this group together in 2020, and we all know what happened then that made touring somewhat difficult, but we had a plan to tour in 2020. Nope, not happening. Tour 2021? Nah, not happening. 2022? Nah, 2023? Nah. Finally, 2024 is the Year Of The Beard. Actually, they changed it to the Chinese zodiac, so it is officially The Year Of The Beard for Australians only!"In the full interview, Ladybeard tells us how an assault on our country could possibly be perceived as adorable, starting the tour in his hometown of Adelaide and if he is nervous about kicking things off in front of friends and family he hasn't seen for a while, gives a brief account of how he went from Adelaide wrestler to international superstar, combining J Pop with metal without being overly offensive, what to expect from the shows, the growth of J Pop as a music and culture and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Frankenbok have been a mainstay on the Australian metal scene for 25 years now. From the outset Frankenbok were a band who went well and truly against the grain - or, for that matter, against EVERY musical convention put in place up to that point - ensuring they never quite fit in with the cool kids or current trends. Not that they would have it any other way.Since bursting onto the scene with Greetings And Salutations in 1999, Frankenbok have very much been a band for the underdog. Musically, socially and geographically.Their refusal to bow down and conform to musical hierarchy has seen them become more of an underground institution despite supporting heavyweights such as Slayer and System Of A Down. They have always done things their way and in their own time, along the way gathering a loyal army of supporters who have stayed with them through thick and thin. This weekend, to fully celebrate their quarter of a century in Australian metal, Frankenbok will host a party unlike any ever seen in this country. On Saturday, December 10, every major incarnation of Frankenbok - totalling five in all - will assemble to play songs from their part of Frankenbok history in one night at The Tote in Melbourne. It is an ambitious and brave venture that has already proved a success, with friendships mended, past ailments buried, and music the overall winner, despite not one live note being played in anger.Yet.It is a night made possible by the collective efforts of every past and present member of Frankenbok, with guitarist Aaron 'Azza' Butler the only member to have played in every line-up.Azza sat down with HEAVY for a frank and open discussion about the life of Frankenbok in a must listen for every fan of the band, or lover of music in general. We start with the very early days of Frankenbok, when Azza returned from the US in 1997 with a renewed musical vision."I basically moved over to Florida chasing the death metal dream," he began, "and I was lucky enough to land in the right circles where I was hearing people talking about Morbid Angel -which were my heroes at the time - and talking about them unlike we talk about them, as in blokes. One guy was talking about Pete Sandoval, the drummer from those days and he said "yeah, he still owes me fifty bucks" and I was blown away because these guys were heroes of mine. So I was very lucky to be taken in by the inner circle of all these people that were - before I moved over to America - they only existed in CD's and posters on my wall and next thing you know I'm having breakfast with some of these people and getting to know them personally. It's kind of a strange thing when once you get to know someone more personally you start to forget who they were to you once upon a time. You have to remind yourself. You start to get comfortable and give them a bit of shit (laughs) and then you go wait a minute... I was lucky enough to get taken in to the inner circle where I learnt a lot from all these guys in bands like Malevolent Creation and the Morbid Angel dudes and another band over there called Pain God, but these are all serious hard hitters in the death metal scene. All of these guys had done time with the big bands, and I got to know these dudes really well and I would often see them in between shows when they came down to Tampa Bay and they would be staying the night and rather than drink the night away and get fucked up one guy would say to the other guitarist 'let's do that thing' and they had all these side projects. Just with eight track recording gear and while they were in town they would work on these things with a drum machine and some primitive recording gear, and at the time I started playing in a band called Shrill, and they were a punk band, which I really enjoyed but I really, really wanted to play death metal stuff. Then I realised that if I got myself a drum machine and a basic four track the Hell with waiting around to find the right musicians, I could just start writing music straight away and not have to wait to find somebody who is a competent musician and part athlete to be able to play some of the drumming I wanted to do. So I did a couple of demos like that, which is what evolved into Frankenbok eventually."In the full interview, Azza goes through the early days in more detail, the formation of Frankenbok, their early sound and where it came from, the sonic leap between Greetings And Salutations and the EP Loopholes And Greatest Excuses, their cover of Don't Call Me Baby, playing that song live with Ladybeard in Japan, Hutchy's involvement with Frankenbok, the decision to go with Adam B Metal when Hutchy left, Dan McDougall's addition as frontman and what he brought to the band, the inherent sense of family within Frankenbok, Dan White taking over as frontman, the decision to bring McDougall back, Frankenbok's legacy and more.

Heavy metal is, and always has been, a unifier of people and cultures. It has brought together people of opposing race, colour, and religion, and has never asked or demanded anything in return.Occasionally, those forces brought together are difficult to understand or comprehend, but just by virtue of the fact metal music is involved people seldom question the hows and whys and simply focus on the unseen bond that weaves the magic of music together.Occasionally and this is a big OCCASSIONALLY, there are musical unions that sometimes defy belief and maybe even question the blind loyalty momentarily. That is until the metal kicks in and everything else is mysteriously okay.Over the years we have heard rap metal, pop metal, punk metal and even Spanish flamenco metal, but none of that has prepared us for the latest musical partnership that promises to sweep the world.Except maybe a little band by the name of Babymetal. But after listening to the latest project from the enigmatic and talented Australian born, Japanese based musical phenomena named Ladybeard, even that world beating pop/metal hybrid will seem like the entrée before a main course of epic proportions.Ladies and metalheads, prepare for Babybeard, a musical enigma that almost dares you to not enjoy them.Aside from the larger than life presence and personal of Ladybeard, Babybeard also contains two of the most talented and adorable musicians to have appeared in the pages of music history. With the imminent release of Babybeards debut video for Nippon Kara Konnichiwa, and as the world prepares for many a WTF moment, Ladybeard himself sat down for a chat with HEAVY to run us through all things Babybeard related and a couple of things that even now we have no idea of how they got into the conversation.I don't usually make recommendations like this, but this is an interview best listened to rather than read, if only just to be drawn up into the exuberant nature of Ladybeard's everyday existence and to be able to fully comprehend the passion, emotion, and occasion charm of one of Australia's finest ever musical exports."For those of you who don't speak Japanese,” an excitable Ladybeard began, “Nippon Kara Konnichiwa means hello from Japan, so this is the point of the whole thing. The whole point of this group Babybeard - which is Ladybeard plus babies, Babybeard - we have two missions. The first one is to bring Japanese pop culture across the waves as much as we can and bring it to the outside world, because there's a lot of interest in Japan and Japanese pop culture from outside of Japan, however, if you are not in the country, and even if you are and you can't speak and write Japanese, access is very challenging. So one of the things we're trying to do is breach the gap. The other thing we are trying to do is bring good times and happiness and inspiration through some really pumping, upbeat and heavy vibes for everyone. I think after the past two years that we've all had everyone could use a bit of happying up and encouragement and inspiration. At the moment we're all stuck in our homes and we can't go out into the world, so we need to yell this massive AAARRRGGGHH to the whole world over the internet waves and we hope that it shall be heard. My first song with my old group that came out in 2015 was called Nippon Manju, so what we did was we got the same musicians who made that song and they made this song as well. Here's what's been going on. Over the past five years or so I've been touring around the world performing at Anime conventions and so forth and everybody tells me how much they loved Nippon Manju and they wanna see more of that so we're really just trying to give the people what they've made very clear that they want. Same musicians from Nippon Manju, same set ups from the old groups, and the two little cuties Suzu and Kotomi and we are trying to bring some Babybeard magic to the world. That is what is going on. This music video has finally happened. I've gotta tell you, I thought it might never actually happen. There's been obstacle upon obstacle upon delay upon delay and I'm so happy that finally we can release this thing. January 24 people. It's on like Donkey Kong!"In the captivating full interview Ladybeard takes you further into the inner world of Babybeard and their plans for the future, talks about the amazing film clip, introduces us to Suzu and Kotomi and why they are such an important part of Babybeard, how to get your hands on the song and video as soon as it is released, mixing Japanese pop culture with heavy metal and how it works, the wonderful and whacky world that is part of his existence and more.
Editors Jon Rosenthal and Ted Nubel sat down to talk with Japanese pop-metal group Babybeard, the newest project from the charismatic Ladybeard (Deadlift Lolita, Ladybaby), discussing the group's upcoming singles, how COVID-era Japan is handling live music, and the unusual/polarizing appeal of "kawaii metal". Not an ordinary episode, to be sure, but a fun one! Babybeard can be found on Twitter (along with Ladybeard, Kotomi, and Suzu), Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok.
Kristen Roupenian came to prominence with the publication of her story ‘Cat Person' in the New Yorker magazine back in 2017. Sing.Dance.DESTROY!!! Ladybeard is a cross-dressing professional wrestler, stunt man, actor and musician who is based in Tokyo, Japan. Formerly part of the Kawaii metal group Ladybaby these days Ladybeard fronts the Kawaiicore band Deadlift Lolita with fellow pro-wrestler Reika Saiki and also features Isao Fujita on guitar of Babymetal fame. If you think that isn't enough, his popularity continues to skyrocket as a high profile DJ in China, putting on large scale shows with pyrotechnics, where his fame has reached next level/epic proportions. After leaving Australia in 2006, Ladybeard has been wowing audiences abroad in wrestling, film and music. He started off in Hong Kong where he did stunt and acting work in several films before relocating to Japan in 2013. These days, his fame is firmly carved out in both Japan and China with many more countries, not just in Asia but many in the Western world, discovering an awareness and love for what he is doing. Ladybeard is one of a growing number of foreigners who are creating successful careers in other countries in unusual ways. In fact, Ladybeard was featured in the the Australian documentary Big In Japan released in 2017 which uncovers a world where people have left their home country in search for a different life from the norm and, in this case, finding fame in Japan. In our chat, Ladybeard and I talk about the cultural differences experienced as an Aussie performer in both Japan and China. We talk about the wonders of Japan (my favourite country to visit personally), how a Dale Carnegie has been his secret weapon to date, his love of metal, the unusual world of idolism in Japan and how he is continuing to build his career in not only wrestling but music and entertainment in general. It's great to see someone unashamedly pursing their dreams in what might be seen by the average joe as an unorthodox approach. Ladybeard is proof that you can get out there and make it happen, whatever your goals might be. His personality and passion for life is intoxicating. I couldn't help but wonder whether I should be doing a little bit more to work toward my own goals in life. He might be a bit out there for some but Ladybeard is one inspiring guy and what he's doing looks like a hell of a lot of fun. Be sure to follow him on the socials and crank some Deadlift Lolita while you're at it. Independent magazines are renowned for their loveliness: the thick paper, gorgeous photography and enticing design are all there to make you want to buy a copy. But what is their own definition of beauty? And how does that compare to the sort of images we're used to seeing in mainstream editorial and advertising? Recorded live on 22 May 2018 at The Book Club in London, this panel discussion brings together the makers of Beauty Papers, Staple and Ladybeard to speak about the ideas and ideals behind their magazines.

This podcast is all about the intersection of heavy metal and pro wrestling, and Ladybeard is the perfect representation of that (sprinkled in with a little cross-dressing and J-pop.) In this incredibly insightful episode, Ladybeard talks about his journey from disovering heavy metal and watching pro wrestling at a young age to eventually finding himself training at the only wrestling school in Hong Kong, with Ho Ho Lun, who was recently seen on the WWE Cruiserweight Classic and WWE NXT. Ladybeard talks about how he broke into the Japanese wrestling scene, with some help from last week's Squared Circle Pit guest, Kenny Omega. And, we discuss Ladybeard's new musical project, Deadlift Lolita, with fellow pro wrestler, Reika Saiki. Listen to some of their music below. Check out previous Squared Circle Pit interviews about wrestling with Slipknot's Corey Taylor, NJPW star Kenny Omega, Cannibal Corpse's George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher, Jamey Jasta, Every Time I Die's Andy Williams, Zakk Wylde, Killswitch Engage's Mike D, Converge's Jacob Bannon, Neurosis' Scott Kelly, former WWE announcer Justin Roberts, and more. There were lots of laughs this episode of the show. Dan Ozzi from Noisey sat in on the entire episode. We kicked it off talking about his date with Natalie Imbruglia, the Mushroomhead controversy and the lack of headliners in heavy metal. We were then joined by the great Ladybeard, all the way from Japan, who discussed his origins and the formation of Ladybaby, his pro wrestling aspirations and Japanese culture. In hour two, Dan talked about touring with Refused, watching porn with Mike from NOFX and we discussed which Subway sandwich we would fuck. We kick off the show talking about Sid's farts. We also got in a heated discussion about Ladybeard and Ladybaby. Rob briefly talks about the TOR browser and Noa discusses going to a Mets game. We were then joined by Randy Blythe, who talked about his excellent new memoir, Dark Days. Randy talks about his writing process, being incarcerated in a Czech prison and he explains why his band would never play the Czech Republic again. Additionally, Blythe shares his thoughts on the state of metal media and internet clickbait, the confederate flag and our future president. Pick up Randy's excellent book, Dark Days, on Amazon.com.
