| Review | Generational heritage! ‘Pachinko' is out now on Apple TV, lead by two amazing directors, Justin Chon and Kogonada. This is the greatest native-language-epic-spanning-eighty-years-about-Japan-occupied-Korea we've ever seen. No, really. It's a doozy. And it turns out this is only the beginning.
If we were to tell you Martin Scorsese produced another gangster movie with Ray Liotta in it, what would you think? Would you probably not think it'd be one of the worst gangster movie's of all time? Well then, you'd be wrong. Revenge of the Green Dragons is a 2014 film based on a true story about a Chinese gang named the Green Dragons that wrecked havoc on Queens in the 80s and 90s. Directed by Andrew Lau and Andrew Loo, while starring Justin Chon and Kevin Wu, Revenge of the Green Dragons is one of the worst reviewed A24 films ever. Infamous in A24 fan circles, these A24 reviewers discuss their takes on the film and what went wrong.
This podcast covers New Girl Season 3, Episode 8, Menus, which originally aired on November 12, 2013 and was written by Matt Fusfeld & Alex Cuthbertson and directed by Trent O'Donnell. Here's a quick recap of the episode:Jess wants to take her students to the ocean as many of her students have never been but she gets shut down by Principal Foster. Instead, she terrorizes an Asian restaurant who is not being eco-conscious. Meanwhile, Coach convinces Nick to get in shape and Schmidt feels left out.We discuss Pop Culture References such as:Barry Bonds - Nick shares that after training with Coach he'll look like Barry Bonds. Jason Street - When Winston has a wheelchair after he hurt his ankle, Coach shares that he looks like Jason Street from the television show Friday Night Lights. Additional Pop Culture References such as:Roberto Benigni - After Schmidt sees Winston in a wheelchair, he feels like he's missing everything and says “What's next? Roberto Benigni coming through the halls making everybody laugh?” Roberto Remigio Benigni is an Italian actor, comedian, screenwriter, and director who gained international recognition for writing, directing, and starring in the Holocaust comedy-drama film Life Is Beautiful. For that film, he was the first non-English speaking winner of an Academy Award for Best Actor. Ghostbusters - Jess was calling out that the menu had the circle with the line through it to indicate “No MSG” and Winston helped her with calling out that's ‘the Ghostbusters thing'. Ghostbusters is a 1984 American supernatural comedy film starring Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Harold Ramis as three eccentric parapsychologists who start a ghost-catching business in New York City. Catch-22 - Nick is trying to help Jess by saying she should try less but she calls out that she doesn't know how to try not to try, which Nick says is a “catch-22”. A catch-22 is a paradoxical situation from which an individual cannot escape because of contradictory rules or limitations. The term was coined by Joseph Heller, who used it in his 1961 satirical novel Catch-22. Ironside - Winston shouts “I'm coming too, because I ain't a quitter. Ironside!” Ironside is an American television crime drama that aired on NBC from 1967 to 1975. The show focused on Robert T. Ironside, who was a consultant for the San Francisco police department who was paralyzed from the waist down after being shot while on vacation. We also cover two “Schmidtisms” this episode when Schmidt commented on Nick eating Chinese food for breakfast and later when Schmidt tried to spy on the loft. For “Not in the 2020s” we discuss Coach and some of his comments as well as the episode showing them handing out paper menus. For “Yes in the 2020s” we love the way Nick's speech inspired Jess to solve her problem with love and not hate. We also give a brief look into Justin Chon (Brian), the Guest Star we feature in this episode. Also in this episode were the following guest stars who we do not discuss in the podcast: Curtis Armstrong (Dr. Foster - Previously discussed in S2E24), Steve Agee (Outside Dave - Previously discussed in S2E17), Jayda Brown (Crystal), and Jeff Lam (Menu Guy).We also discuss how it's possible that Damon Wayans Jr. and Zooey Deschanel went to high school together. This episode, we did not find the bear. While not discussed in the podcast, we noted other references in this episode including:SUNY Binghamton - When Outside Dave is eating lunch with Schmidt, he pulls out a doll and says he went to SUNY Binghamton. SUNY Binghamton is a university that started out as a branch of Syracuse University and then in 1950 was incorporated into the State University of New York (SUNY) and renamed. In 1965, the campus was formally designated the State University of New York at Binghamton, and in 1992, Binghamton University was adopted as its informal name. This episode got a 8/10 rating from Kritika whose favorite character was Schmidt and Kelly rated this episode a 6.5/10 and her favorite character was Nick! Thanks for listening and stay tuned for Episode 9!Music: "Hotshot” by scottholmesmusic.comFollow us on Twitter, Instagram or email us at whosthatgirlpod@gmail.com!Website: https://smallscreenchatter.com/

HAPPY NEW YEAR! PART 2 for 2022!As we released PART 1 of this special two-part and festive 'Kimchi and Film' themed 'NoSoKoPo' show only hours before Christmas Day itself, we thought it best to hold out until after the first week of 2022 before dropping PART 2 on our viewers & listeners, by which time Jay & Tim would have just settling back into 'the new normal', and perhaps our 'fans' would have too!In this second half - which starts immediately after PART 1's interview with artists (and 'kimchi pool' designers), The Decorators - Jay and Tim dedicate a large chunk of it to Korean films, a Korean-related film or two and indeed a Korean Christmas film which recently graced UK cinema screens. Movies covered and/or reviewed include two by Kim Jong-kwan, "Josée" and "Shades Of The Heart", as well as "Finding Angel", "Heaven - To The Land Of Happiness", "Spiritwalker", "Drive My Car", Justin Chon's "Blue Bayou", and d even a documentary about Oscar-winner Ms Youn Yuh-jung... Oh, and chit-chat about when Jay & Tim met a couple of Korean film directors recently, including Mr Im Sang-soo.From film talk we mix this with chat about Korean adoptees, coffee places in KoreaTown and indeed South Korea itself, an exhausting London Korean Film Festival in 2021, touch on Korean plastic surgery, the Sewol ferry [as we did in Part 1 briefly] and a tiny video snippet from a recent Sewol UK memorial in Korea-town itself, as well as John Kim's Kimchi song again and speak a little about North Koreans in New Malden yet again - a subject we will be covering more in Episode 18 or 19.Listen out for us touching again on new gift-box company, "Seoulbox" [an unboxing of which will also feature in Episode 18], the Third Window Films podcast and the prospect of Jay & Tim doing 'live' podcast sessions in New Malden itself.Lastly, you'll hear about how Jay took up far too much of a KOFICE's correspondent's time, but at the same time learnt so much about how she (Tayoni) helps others with the Korean language via her YouTube channel, in addition to Jay, and indeed Tim almost 'food-shopping' in the name of Korean TV channel, KBS!Further information about subjects covered in this episode can be found here:FILM INFO:"Finding Angel" - Thanks to @themediapioneers (Instagram)"Blue Bayou" - @BlueBayouFilm (Instagram) & @JustinChon (Instagram - director)"Drive My Car - @drivemycar_mv (Instagram)"Heaven - To The Land Of Happiness", "Spiritwalker""Josée" and "Shades Of The Heart" - @monologue707 (dir. Q&A on the film Blue Bayou with writer/director/actor Justin Chon. Moderated by Mara Webster, In Creative Company. As a Korean-American man raised in the Louisiana bayou works hard to make a life for his family, he must confront the ghosts of his past as he discovers that he could be deported from the only country he has ever called home.
Halfway through his ten-year ban from the United States, Adam Crapser has been thrust into public attention again with the release of Justin Chon's movie "Blue Bayou." The film has striking similarities to Adam's own life story, blasphemed as a heartfelt tragedy of Adam's personal trauma. In this episode, Adam sits down with DFP team member Mailé to talk about Adam's story of family separation and the oversight of non-adoptees surrounding the realities and trauma of adoption. Adam talks candidly about being deported to Korea, and how he's making the best of his situation by using his platform to call for change. Tune in for a discussion about two great movies with three great guests - some of whom are actors who have now moved behind the camera! In this episode, we talk about... Why Justin Chon decided to star in his movie, even though he didn't initially set out to. How Justin Chon creates a safe and open environment on set, how he works with his DPs, and other insights into his process. How Justin Chon chose and secured his co-star. The challenges of working with children. How Justin Chon went about researching the issue at the crux of Blue Bayou. How Lady of the Manor came about and how Christian and Justin created its “odd couple” style comedy. The similarities to the play Blithe Spirit and how the writers just may have been inspired by it! The rather surprising choice to write this type of comedy script for women! How they approached the directing process for Lady of the Manor. Why keeping the plot simple can be really key in comedies. Welcome to Episode 50 of the Asian American History 101 podcast! It's time for Part 3 in a series on the History of Hawai'i. Today we're talking about the road to statehood for Hawai'i… a path that many native Hawai'ians probably did not approve of. How do territories become states? What was it like for Hawai'i. We also talk about the rise in Anti-Asian hate incidents here in Orange County as well as the confirmation of Florence Pan, the first Asian American woman to serve as Federal District Court Judge in Washington D.C. To close, we take time to talk about Blue Bayou by Justin Chon, a film we loved, and share an organization seeking justice for Asian American adoptees who were never granted citizenship, Adoptees for Justice. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen joins Christiane Amanpour in an exclusive interview to talk about the AUKUS deal. She says a lot of questions have to be answered and the current treatment of France is “not acceptable”. Then UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi discusses the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan and the need for stability in the country. Turning to a moving portrayal of the Asian-American experience, our Hari Sreenivasan speak to former Twilight actor Justin Chon about his new movie “Blue Bayou” in which he directs and stars as a Korean born U.S. adoptee who faces deportation from the only country he's ever called home. And finally, singer/songwriter and four-time Grammy nominee Yola talks about making music in an industry that, she says, too often subverts black female autonomy. Then, Blue Bayou director and star Justin Chon (41:30) comes on the show to talk about his new film, which tells the story of a Louisiana man who discovers that when he was adopted from as an infant, his new family never filed the proper paperwork to get him naturalized. Now married with a baby on the way, he faces deportation to a country that is foreign to him – and more importantly, away from the only home he has ever known. ”Hollywood Remixed” is a topical, diversity-focused podcast from The Hollywood Reporter, hosted by Rebecca Sun. Each episode will be dedicated to a single theme – a type of character or story that has been traditionally underrepresented or misrepresented in pop culture – and feature an expert co-host as well as a special guest whose latest work exemplifies a new breakthrough in representation. We'll revisit groundbreaking classics and introduce listeners to hidden gems, in order to better understand how film and television in the past has shaped progress in the present. I jumped off the couch when I saw Mark O'Brien walk onscreen in Marriage Story starring Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver. I had interviewed Mark back in 2018 when he was fresh off the set of the Oscar-nominated Arrival, starring Amy Adams, and I've been following his career ever since. Mark plays the unstable Jimmy Ryan in the Ben Affleck/Matt Damon produced City on a Hill starring Kevin Bacon and Aldis Hodge. Georgina also has a recurring role in the Boston-based drama, but I truly fell for her in Baker and the Beauty. She plays Piper, best friend to Noa (Nathalie Kelley) in the Netflix show that rated number 1. She is pure light. It was such a joy chatting with them about their marriage story, their hilarious proposal mix-up, and the trick they played on their wedding guests. We talk parenting, red carpets, A-list Hollywood parties and skincare hacks Georgina picked up from Nathalie Kelley. Mark wrote and directed his first film THE RIGHTEOUS, which will make its World Premiere at Fantasia Festival August 15 & 18th 2021. Get info and tickets here. Mark is also upcoming in the highly anticipated feature BLUE BAYOU (opposite Alicia Vikander and Justin Chon). The film made its debut at the Cannes Film Festival this summer and will be released in the US on September 17th. BLUE BAYOU is a moving and timely story of an American family fighting for their future. Mark plays Ace, a police officer, whose moral compass drives the film's central conflict- choosing between family or what he's legally bound to do. Mark's performance in this film is incredibly moving and some of the most gut-wrenching and impactful moments. Watch the trailer here. CSI: Vegas is set to debut on CBS on October 6, 2021 so stay tuned! Follow Georgina and Mark on IG. Follow Flipflops on IG. Follow me on IG.
Welcome to The Last Thing I Saw, with your host, Nicolas Rapold. Today we're talking with Justin Chang, film critic at The Los Angeles Times, about more movies from the Cannes Film Festival. We talked about Blue Bayou, a drama from Justin Chon; Stillwater, starring Matt Damon, from the director of Spotlight; the mysterious Mia Hansen Love movie, Bergman Island; and Kogonada's new science fiction film, After Yang, with Colin Farrell. I talked with Justin at the last edition of Cannes in 2019 and it was a pleasure to pick right back up. Be sure to check the Los Angeles Times for his latest write-ups. How does the term “Anti-Asian Racism” inhibit a more complete understanding of racism and white supremacy? This episode suggests that we cease intense advocacy and support for a group in question well after they have been hurt, or worse, killed. Activism should not and cannot persist in the forms of boom and bust cycles. It shouldn't be a summer of #BLM and a few weeks of #StopAnti-Asian Racism, but a continuous struggle to liberate and fight for all parties who are dehumanized by various oppressive forces. We need to supplant reactionary sloganeering with productive work -- such that assists Asian-Americans, Black people, or anyone who is presently/historically oppressed without waiting for something to these marginal communities first.
