Laura, the shooter, is a former SVU victim whose case was mishandled. Captain Olivia Benson goes to bat for her, arguing victims will refuse to give their DNA if they think it will be used against them in the future.Benson stuns prosecutors Nolan Price and Samantha Maroun by agreeing to testify the shooting was self-defense. She says Laura's trauma gave her a heightened sense of danger, even though the victim wasn't actually stalking her. Benson convinces Price to offer Laura a deal - which she refuses. Meanwhile, District Attorney Nicholas Baxter pledges to reform the use of that DNA database.We're talking about the latest episode of NBC's "Law & Order" season 24 episode 2 "The Perfect Man." October 10, 2024 Today's Reading: Catechism - Table of duties: To wivesDaily Lectionary: Deuteronomy 9:1-22; Matthew 11:1-19Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. (Ephesians 5:22)In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. We hear Paul's text with modern ears and are, at best, surprised. We hear ‘submit' and begin to wonder: “My goodness, if we were to return to this way of thinking, then all the progress we've made for women and little girls will be undone!” Submission is a dirty word… a word that sounds like something we'd say to a subject or slave of a King. It makes sense in our sin… in a world that we've been tempted to believe is run and ruled by power. So regardless… in our sinful minds, it's not that we don't like the word submit… we're more concerned with who will submit to whom.That's where the second part of the text comes in… submission is to be ‘as to the Lord.'  So submission has less to do with power and everything to do with what Jesus has done for us. “Submit to your husband” is, of course, a directive, a command, but Paul also tells us why wives submit… they submit to husbands as to the Lord because the whole bride of Christ, the Christian church, submits– gives herself over to the care of Jesus. Jesus isn't interested in ruling over us as a tyrant king… He's not looking for us to do things for Him. He's true God and true man. As God, He has need of nothing… and as a man willingly became sin for us, to carry sin, put it to death in order to buy back His precious bride from sin, death, and the Devil. He's the perfect Husband, the Perfect Man, and willingly becomes the least, the weakest, the servant of all in order to redeem His bride.Submission isn't ceding power, and it isn't a matter of who'll be the boss… God alone is the Creator, Redeemer, and Sanctifier– everything necessary for this body and life and the life to come is taken care of… submission is a deference… a deferring and a trust that the man will lay aside everything, bear the burdens and sins of his family, his wife, die unto himself, and perhaps even physically die for the sake of wife and children. It's a trust that husbands will be the heads of households, take responsibility for the instruction of the family, take them to the house of God to receive what the Good Shepherd freely gives, and to give of himself as Christ gave Himself for His Bride the church. Submission isn't about power or even losing power… it is about true trust that the Lord of us all takes care of us by the church: in families and in husbands and wives who by grace have children… who in turn become husbands and wives themselves… and so creation and the Church continues from generation to generation. Submit to, as you do to the Lord, who has died and risen FOR YOU. In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.Most Gracious God, we give thanks for the joy and blessings that You grant to husbands and wives. Assist them always by Your grace that with true fidelity and steadfast love, they may honor and keep their marriage vows, grow in love toward You and for each other, and come at last to the eternal loys that You have promised; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. ABOUT THE EPISODE:After years of producing feature films and TV shows about family life like Cinderella Story, Perfect Man, Lizzy McGuire, and many others, Mark Rosman was forced to face the reality of problems in his own family.Mark and his wife spent some time in denial about their daughter's substance use. Even after two trips to the emergency room, they decided against professional advice to get her into treatment immediately.  They chalked everything up to ordinary teen rebellion and experimentation, sending her to a traditional boarding school instead. Less than one month later, she was in the emergency room again after downing a bottle of Listerine. Thus began the roller coaster we're all familiar with: periods of hope and sobriety, followed by lapses into chaos and returns to use.Like many parents, Mark instinctively rejected the notion of "self care", or any form of detachment from his daughter's behavior and state of mind at any given time. Finally, in what seemed like his 100th parent group meeting, he admitted to himself (and everyone else there) the utter hopelessness he was feeling. The other morning, I woke up thinking about our pastor chats on the Gospel of Luke and how it presents us with the reality of Jesus. We live in a day of “Virtual Reality” and “AI”. Virtual Reality (VR) is a computer-generated environment with scenes and objects that appear to be real, making the user feel they are immersed in their surroundings. You are deceived into thinking something is real when it really doesn't even exist at all.  Artificial intelligence (AI) is now commonplace and is even doing our thinking for us and replacing human creativity and intelligence. It also can deceive us into an artificial world where now we don't know what is real and what is true!   Too many people today, including Christians, have never experienced Jesus as a very real person, living in a very real time, in a very real geographical location! He is just a story in a book for us to believe or not to believe. Luke's purpose and my purpose in studying the Gospel of Luke is to encourage us to experience Jesus as a very real person who loves us, and is present tense available to save us, and help us along life's way!   Another reason I want to take the time to study the Gospel of Luke is to focus on some “Good News”. The very word “Gospel” means Good News. Today whenever we turn on the news it is anything but good. All you hear and see is a world full of confusion, chaos, conflict, violence, strife, and war. Most of our conversations with co-workers, family and friends are about issues, problems, difficulties, about finances, health, and family problems. Well, the Bible is the “Good News” Book!!!!   That's what the Gospel of Luke is about, and that Good News is about the person of Jesus Christ! Luke makes sure that his researched account of Jesus' birth, life, and death is both historically and spiritual accurate!  All the Gospels present Jesus Christ is their own unique way for a specific purpose.   The Gospel of Matthew, was written primarily to the Jewish world, emphasizes that Jesus was born the Messiah and presents the Lord Jesus as the King of the Jews, and Redeemer. Numerous times Matthew repeats, “And it was fulfilled…”. Proving that Jesus fulfilled all the Old Testament prophecies concerning His birth, His life, His death, and His resurrection.   The Gospel of Mark, written primarily for the Roman world, emphasizes that Jesus was the Suffering Servant, prophesied in Isaiah 53. Jesus humbled Himself and came to do the will of His Father and to reveal the amazing love and grace of God.  This is clearly seen in Jesus' own words, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45). There is no genealogy recorded in the Gospel of Mark because a servant's genealogy was insignificant and not worthy of being recorded.    The Gospel of Luke, written primarily for the Greek world, presents Jesus as the Son of Man. Luke focuses on Jesus' humanity and beautifully details the announcement of His incarnation and His birth (Luke 1 and 2). Luke is the only Gospel that gives a glimpse into Jesus' childhood years (Luke 2:40, Luke 2:42-43).  The genealogy in Luke begins with Joseph, as the husband of Mary, and traces Jesus' ancestry through Mary's bloodline, from the line of David (making Jesus the biological heir to the throne of David), and all the way back to the first man, Adam. Jesus is presented to the Greeks as the “Perfect Man”.   The Gospel of John is the universal Gospel written for the whole world. John presents Jesus as the Son of God. There is no genealogy mentioned because Jesus is God from the beginning! (John 1:1-4). John shared the miracles that Jesus did proving that Jesus is the Son of God so that we would believe and have life in His name (John 20:30-31).   It is my prayer that as we study Luke, we will all embrace the reality of Jesus Christ in every aspect of our daily lives!
