Cultural studies of the nineteenth century often categorize their subjects as being motivated by one of two opposing notions: a wholehearted embrace of progress or an antimodernist nostalgia. A Perfectionist Impulse: The Art of Stopping Time in the Nineteenth Century (U Minnesota Press, 2026) centers a different kind of response to the period's newly intensified awareness of temporality and history: an obsession with preserving perfection. Engaging a diverse set of case studies, Dr. Ellery E. Foutch explores the era's desire to forestall the march of time and immortalize the fleeting moment through art and technology. Beginning with an investigation of artist and naturalist Titian Peale's butterfly illustrations and specimen boxes, Dr. Foutch assesses the implications of attempts to fix animal life in the “perfect state.” She then turns to Harvard's Ware Collection of Glass Flowers, botanical models meticulously crafted to serve as instructional tools but most famous internationally as a spectacle for tourists. Finally, she scrutinizes the period's preoccupation with the fragility of the human body, examining artistic representations of the legendary bodybuilder Eugen Sandow, widely known during his time as the “Perfect Man.” Highlighting the paradoxical way in which these attempts at preservation ultimately sap the vitality from the organic processes they seek to arrest, Dr. Foutch uses these curious objects to unpack a deep set of cultural anxieties around decay and death. By analyzing objects of mass culture and natural history using methods typically reserved for works of art, A Perfectionist Impulse provides a unique window into how nineteenth-century scientists, technologists, artists, and entertainers rendered a common desire for perfection and immortality. Itself a wondrous collection of attempts to capture the idealized moment, this extensively illustrated book serves as a shining example of our enduring fascination with the ephemeral. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. LHIM Weekly Bible Teachings

Although it's common today to think of Jesus as God, he's the human mediator between God and mankind (1 Tim 2:5). God never feels the pull of sin. Like eating liver and onions, sin holds no temptation for God (Jam 1:13). Jesus, however, faced temptations to sin throughout his life, but he overcame each one (Heb 4:15). Scripture reveals that although Jesus had a miraculous conception (Luke 1:35), he was genuine human being. He was born in the usual manner (Luke 2:7), grew up and became strong (Luke 2:40), and increased in wisdom over time (Luke 2:52). Peter recognized that Jesus was a man attested by God (Acts 2:22-23). Paul saw him as the man who righted Adam's wrongs (Rom 5:12-21). Even when Jesus returns as judge, he will still be a man appointed by God (Acts 17:31). To be human is to be in the image of God (Gen 1:26-27) and to have dominion over creation (Psalm 8:3-8). Jesus, though initially lower than the angels, has received glory and honor as the ultimate man who served God faithfully (Heb 2:5-18). The secret to Jesus's success of living righteously was his dependence on the Father (John 4:34; 5:19, 30; 7:16, 28; 8:26, 28-29; 10:25, 37; 12:49-50; 14:10, 24, 31; 15:10, 15; 17:4, 7-8). The greatest demonstration of his humble obedience was when he faced Satan's temptations in the wilderness (Mat 4:1-11). Jesus is the perfect man, our ultimate example in whose steps we can follow (1 Pet 2:18-25).The post The Gospel 4: Jesus, the Perfect Man first appeared on Living Hope.

Kaylie shares her personal experience with online deception and how it inspired her to create Fuzzy. They discuss the importance of online safety, the role of AI in fraud, and practical steps to protect oneself in the digital age. Quotes from Kalie: "I met somebody who I thought was just perfect on paper... everything was a complete and utter lie." "Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned... I'm so focused on the direction that I'm going and helping people stay safer online." "We need a persistent layer of identity... a universal standardization of what it means to be verified." Key Takeaways: Online dating scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated, often involving real-life interactions. AI deep fakes pose a new threat, making it easier to create synthetic identities. Fuzzy offers a verification badge that consolidates online and offline identities. Transparency and verification are crucial in exposing bad actors online. Legislation is slowly catching up to regulate online safety and protect users. Personal vigilance and using tools like Fuzzy can significantly reduce the risk of online scams. Life itself flows from Him, and that life shines as light into a dark world that resists and rejects it. He is not a created being or a lesser expression of God, but God Himself made known. All creation testifies to His power, and every person is accountable for how they respond to the light He gives. The tragedy of humanity is not the absence of light, but the refusal to receive it, even as Christ continues to shine in truth, grace, and redemption. Send us a textWould your confidence hold if your safety net snapped like a spider web? We dive into the exchange between Job and Bildad to examine the difference between real trust and the illusion of security that prosperity can create. Bildad's words land with force because they're half-true: wealth is fragile, plans are brittle, and the plant of success can be uprooted overnight. But he misfires when he pins that charge on Job, equating loss with guilt and suffering with secret sin. We dig into that error and ask what it means to build on a foundation that endures when favorable seasons pass.Along the way, we trace the spider web image through Isaiah 59, where outward activity cannot clothe the soul. We talk openly about how most of us lean on bank accounts, plans, and applause to feel safe—and how the tease of partial success keeps us chasing the next thing. Then we pivot to a saner rhythm: obey God and enjoy life. Paint the wall. Love your people. Be grateful today. Let go of “stuff” so it can stay a gift and not a god. That release doesn't shrink your world; it frees you to hold what matters with clean hands and a steady heart. We also sit with Job's quiet. Silence is not surrender; it can be the place where dependence deepens and words return with weight. True counsel meets suffering with presence, not blame. Common grace is real, empathy is needed, and wisdom knows when a biblical idea is being used in the wrong moment. If you've ever felt accused in your losses or tempted to build your worth on what you own, this conversation offers clarity, courage, and a call back to what lasts. If this resonated, follow the show, share it with a friend who needs a sturdier foundation, and leave a review so others can find it.Support the showBE PROVOKED AND BE PERSUADED!

Send us a textA friend who “tells it like it is” can leave deeper bruises than the storm itself. We dive into Job 8 and meet Bildad, the comforter who wields doctrine like a club—equating suffering with secret sin and appealing to tradition as if age could replace discernment. As we read his words, we ask harder questions about truth, love, and how theology should land on a broken heart. We share why the prosperity-innocence formula fails the test of Job's life and the witness of Scripture. Our panel explores the tension between honoring the wisdom of the past and recognizing when it's misapplied in the present. Along the way, we confront a widespread belief about election: did God choose us because He foresaw our choice, or do we choose Christ because He first chose and drew us by grace? That distinction changes how we interpret suffering and how we treat those who are grieving. If grace is first, then accusation has to yield to patience, presence, and prayer. We also unpack Bildad's marshland metaphors—reeds withering without water—and why they don't prove Job's guilt. Christ, the living water, sustains believers even when outward life dries up. Rather than reading providence like a scoreboard, we learn to hold fast to the character of God and the integrity He Himself grants His people. The conversation stays practical: how to avoid weaponizing doctrine, how to use tradition wisely, and how to care for friends without turning into a judge. If you're weary of neat answers to messy pain, press play. Then share your take: where have you seen “truth” used without love, and what restored your hope? Send us a textPain often draws a crowd of advisers—and not all of them bring comfort. We walk through Job 8 and the cutting claims of Bildad, who reads Job's losses as proof of a godless heart. From that scene we confront a stubborn modern reflex: turning prosperity into a scorecard for righteousness while treating suffering as evidence of hidden sin. Instead, we argue for a bigger frame—God's sovereignty over both blessing and hardship—and show how that truth stabilizes hope when life is stripped bare.We dig into the language of hope as assurance, not wishful thinking, and unpack Bildad's metaphor of the spider's web: intricate, impressive, yet fragile and deceptive. That image becomes a mirror for our own false securities—wealth, reputation, perfect families, and religious performance—that look strong until a single gust tears them down. Along the way, we consider how Jesus himself appeared withered and stricken before men yet was never cut off, and how that lens redefines what “favor” looks like when the crowd misunderstands faithfulness. This is also a conversation about pastoral wisdom. Job's friends morph from comforters to critics, adding weight to a soul already bruised. We offer a different path: presence over presumption, Scripture applied with patience, questions rather than conclusions, and a firm refusal to weaponize providence. If God truly reigns over our trials, then despair is not our only option; we can grieve honestly and trust deeply, anchored in Christ, our blessed hope. If this resonates, subscribe, share with a friend who needs gentler counsel, and leave a review telling us how you've been comforted—or challenged—to comfort others well.Support the showBE PROVOKED AND BE PERSUADED!

Send us a textCourage shows its face when comfort leaves the room. We walk through Job 8 with honest eyes, testing Bildad's confident sayings against what God already declared about Job and asking how often we make the same mistake—using true phrases in false ways. Along the way, we zoom out to the bigger story: Moses at the Red Sea, Abraham on the mountain, and the blazing center of it all—Jesus, who embraced poverty, rejection, and a sham conviction so the guilty could go free. If pain proves guilt, what would Bildad say to Christ? That question reframes the entire conversation. We dig into why “blameless” doesn't mean sinless perfection but a reconciled standing. Perfection lives in Christ alone, and that changes how we read suffering. The easy promise—repent and prosper—collapses under the weight of the cross. Restoration is real, but the inheritance is greater than comfort: a robe of righteousness that cannot be taken. We trace Barabbas' release and the true Son's condemnation to expose the deep exchange at the heart of the gospel. Then we bring it home: how systems—religious and political—nudge believers to hush the name of Jesus, and why faith must speak anyway, with courage and compassion. If you've been bruised by verses used as a club, if you've wondered why the upright still ache, or if you're wrestling with pressure to stay quiet about Christ, this conversation offers clarity and ballast. Samantha pulls back the curtain on the real process behind meeting her husband, Kurt: the mindset rewiring, the nervous system work, the identity shift, and the practical action that gets skipped when people reduce love to “just make a list.”You'll hear why healthy relationship examples matter, how Samantha's “ask hot guys out” era helped her expose anxious attachment patterns, and why your relationship won't thrive if your partner is your only source of emotional oxygen. We're going to be ableto do so many different things such as meet and speak to pastors, participatein dedicating a number of freshwater wells, and distribute gifts given through theGPPD gift catalog to the widows and Indian children. Also we'll be providinganimals for different folks to help provide food for them. We will be able toimpact and bless many precious Indian people and influence them for Christ. So pleasepray, pray, for safety and strength for this trip.  Alsosecondly, if you would like to financially help me cover the expenses for thetrip and with taking some gifts and money to give to pastors, simply donate itto “Mission Travel Support” through the PayPal donate button on our website: https://www.pmiministries.org/  Or you can send a gift to the address listed onour website where I have my office. Thank you in advance for your prayers andsupport. We're so blessed to have friends like you who've supported us over theyears and have helped us continue to do this wonderful ministry. Now,back to Ephesians 4:11-16. I want to share something that I noticed yesterdayin my devotional time, that I believe will speak to your heart, too.  Remember the Apostle Paul in this chapter has alreadytalked about the grace of unity, the ground of unity, and the gifts of unity, inverses 1-11. Now he's talking about the growth of unity (vv. 11-16).  When we have true spiritual growth in ourpersonal and individual lives, we will also experience growth in our churches. Paultells us that the offices and gifts of the apostles, prophets, evangelist, pastors, and the teachers are given to the church for the perfecting of the saint forthe saint to grow to spiritual maturity. He describes this as, “To a perfectman”, (or “woman”). Yesterdayin my devotion time, while reading a devotion by Oswald Chambers, he spoke ofwhat it means to “be perfect”.  Thinkingabout it, I remembered back in Matthew 5:48, Jesus had said in His Sermon onthe Mount, "Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father inheaven is perfect." Then in Matthew 19, a rich young ruler came toJesus asking, "What can I do to inherit eternal life?" Jesus answeredand told him, "If you would be perfect…." Now, what does itmean to be perfect?  OswaldChambers tells us, "Beware of mental quibbling over the word ‘perfect'. Perfectiondoes not mean the full maturity and consummation of a man's power. But perfectfitness for doing the will of God (Philippians 3:12-15). Supposing Jesus Christcan perfectly adjust me to God, to put me so perfectly right that I shall be onthe footing where I can do the will of God, do I really want Him to do it? Do Iwant God at all cost to make me perfect?” (From his book, “It Thou Wilt bePerfect”, page 116) Thequestion for you and me today is, do I really want to be the person that'sspiritually mature to the place where I will be willing to yield my life sofully to God so that I'm always “about my Father's business”. Am I doingthe will of God right now? The first characteristic of spiritual maturity is “Christlikeness”. Godbless!

In this Sunday Extra podcast, Pastor Matt expands on his sermon about Jesus' statement "I am the light of the world" from John's Gospel. This declaration occurred during the Feast of Booths (Tabernacles), when Jews commemorated God's guidance through the wilderness as a pillar of fire. Throughout Scripture, light symbolizes God's holiness, truth, glory, life, guidance, righteousness, and fellowship, while darkness represents sin, ignorance, Satan's realm, and separation from God. The discussion explores how believers are called to walk in Christ's light and reflect it to others, with Pastor Matt noting that "to be a follower of Jesus is to be in a spiritual battle." The podcast also examines why there are four Gospel accounts with different perspectives: Matthew presents Jesus as King to a Jewish audience, Mark portrays Him as Servant to Romans, Luke depicts Him as the Perfect Man to Greeks, and John emphasizes His deity as the Son of God to all people. This explains why John's Gospel contains the seven "I AM" statements that reveal Christ's divine nature.

#WDRadio WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 28, 2025: Giant footprints at 20,000 feet, ancient Tibetan warnings, and mysterious disappearances in the mountains—the Yeti isn't just a legend. There are centuries of encounters from the Himalayas to Siberia, including evidence that made even skeptics into believers, with connections to unexplained phenomena that challenges everything we thought we knew about the Abominable Snowman.==========HOUR ONE: Is it possible that in 1927 we picked up signals from an artificial satellite sent to our planet by an extraterrestrial intelligence? Some believe the evidence is overwhelming. (Mystery of the Alien Satellite) *** When a great famine struck Europe in 1314, mothers abandoned their children and in some cases, even ate them. Could this be the gruesome beginnings of the story we know as Hansel and Gretel? (The Grimm Reality Behind Hansel and Gretel) *** But first… I doubt there's a single person over the age of twelve living in the modernized world that hasn't at least heard of Bigfoot. A large portion of them have probably heard it's other name – Sasquatch – as well. But far fewer are familiar with his even more reclusive Siberian cousin: the Russian Bigfoot that's we've come to know as the Yeti, or more fondly… the Abominable Snowman. We'll begin with that story! (Why They Call This Snowman Abominable)==========HOUR TWO: Ever heard of Shadrack Ireland? No, it's not a place – it's a person, actually. A preacher – and one of the most bizarre religious leaders ever to walk the soil of New England. And as strange as his religious practices and teachings were – his death was just as crazy. (The Perfect Man) *** Lisa woke up to find her boyfriend staring at her. When she asked him what was wrong, he replied, “I'm going to kill you and drink your blood.” Is it possible that the film, “Interview With The Vampire” made Daniel Sterlin turn into a real-life bloodthirsty monster? (Interview With The Wannabee Vampire) *** Gerald Foos built a secret passageway in his motel – not to smuggle drugs or store weapons, but so he could spy on his motel guests having sex. And it gets even creepier than that. (Peeping Tom Motel) *** A family loses two children by apparent poisoning… and then the mother's death two months later under the same mysterious circumstances. Obviously there was a murderer living amongst the family, or somewhere in the town. Wasn't there? (The Mystery of the Garrett Family's Tragic Deaths)==========SUDDEN DEATH OVERTIME: In 1938, stories of a "killer ghost" began to be told in eastern Kentucky. Even though no one ever saw this malevolent apparition, it was said to have caused five very similar and unexplained deaths. HOUR ONE: Ever heard of Shadrack Ireland? (The Mystery of the Garrett Family's Tragic Deaths)==========HOUR TWO: Is it possible that in 1927 we picked up signals from an artificial satellite sent to our planet by an extraterrestrial intelligence? (Why They Call This Snowman Abominable)==========SUDDEN DEATH OVERTIME: In 1938, stories of a "killer ghost" began to be told in eastern Kentucky. Even though no one ever saw this malevolent apparition, it was said to have caused five very similar and unexplained deaths.
