The Prime Minister announces a huge boost to military spending, to the relief of a former Canadian Army commander who says that, in an unstable world, that investment is long overdue. An Australian woman is accused of killing her inlaws by serving them Beef Wellington with poisonous mushrooms, and her trial has become a national obsession. While our guest was photographing protests in Los Angeles, he was shot in the leg with a rubber bullet. He tells us the President's decision to send in the National Guard has only made Angelenos less safe. In an annual tradition, staff at a Winnipeg high school all become guidance counsellors, and what they're guiding is a family of ducks. A Canadian classic rock banger has become a staple of this year's Stanley Cup playoffs; we'll get Rik Emmett from Triumph on the line to lay his feelings about "Lay It On The Line" on the line. When a group of young Black men posted a video in which they tried matcha for the first time, it got a lot of love, and a lot of noisy haters. But their videos, and their joy, are proving infectious. As It Happens, the Monday Edition. Radio that celebrates a matcha made in heaven.

Rik Emmett of Triumph returns to the podcast. The singer/songwriter/guitarist behind the hit Triumph songs “Hold On”, “Lay It On The Line”, “Fight The Good Fight”, “Magic Power”, and “Somebody's Out There” is about to release his second book. Ten Telecaster Tales: Liner Notes for a Guitar and Its Music. The followup to his memoir Lay It On The Line, Ten Telecaster Tales remakes the idea of the “concept album.” It is music that arrives inside a book. It's also, arguably, the most comprehensive attempt at liner notes in the history of electric instrumental fingerstyle guitar albums. Emmett delves into the creative process — the roots, influences, philosophy, and spirituality involved in writing and recording and breaks down the ten tracks included on his brand new album titled Ten Telecaster Tales.Purchase a copy of Ten Telecaster Tales: Liner Notes for a Guitar and Its Music Episode Playlist ----------BookedOnRock.com The Booked On Rock Store The Booked On Rock YouTube Channel Follow The Booked On Rock with Eric Senich:FACEBOOKINSTAGRAMTIKTOKX Find Your Nearest Independent Bookstore Contact The Booked On Rock Podcast: thebookedonrockpodcast@gmail.com The Booked On Rock Music: “Whoosh” by Crowander / “Last Train North” & “No Mercy” by TrackTribe

A few days ago, Tom finally got to speak with Canadian guitar legend Rik Emmett of Triumph. Rik was a bucket list guest for Tom, who could hardly contain himself! There’s a very special reason why Rik was talking to us. On Monday, May 5, 2025 Coalition for Music Education will celebrate Music Monday with a cross-country sing-along to raise awareness for music education. The annual event celebrates the unifying power of music as thousands of Canadians join in singing and performing the Music Monday anthem at their schools and other community events. Hold On the uplifting, inspirational song by classic Canadian hard rock power trio, Triumph has been chosen as the 2025 Music Monday anthem. Rik tells us about the creation of “Hold On” 46 years ago and how it marked a change in his artistic growth as well as the fortunes of the band. He also discusses the importance of music education, a cause that is deeply personal to him. You can see Rik perform in person at a special “Intimate Evening with Rik Emmett” – Friday, March 21 at Black Bellows in Collingwood Ontario. It’s an interactive evening of performances and storytelling, hosted by Brent Jensen of the “No Sleep Til Sudbury” podcast. Rik’s excellent memoir, “Lay It On The Line”, is now available. Welcome to part two of my latest NSTS chat with the very talented and always entertaining Rik Emmett, live from his home. Last week we talked about his new book entitled Lay It On The Line, and this week we discuss some of the other stuff he's been working on - including reworked versions of some old Triumph classics and a new project called Ten Telecaster Tales. And guess what? Rik was kind enough to give us our own exclusive little taste of some of these songs.
He's back! Rik Emmett's new book, Lay It On The Line, is the focus of our latest chat live from the newly renovated music room of Rik's home. As usual, the discussion is funny, insightful and highly entertaining - not unlike his new book. In part one of our two-part conversation, the insights are particularly interesting. Rik sheds light on his motivations behind writing songs like "Fight The Good Fight", "Magic Power", and "Hold On", how a Triumph album cover tried to capture a Beatles motif (but with lasers!), how "Suitcase Blues" prepared his fans for a post-Triumph Rik Emmett, and so much more.
Back in the 80s, Triumph ruled the rock airwaves with hits like "Magic Power", "Fight The Good Fight" and "Lay It On The Line"...establishing themselves as one of the best bands on the road, as they proved at the Us Festival in 1983 in front of 670,00 people!!And now the band is celebrating that performance with a limited edition double album, and we talked to Triumph vocalist and guitarist Rik Emmett about that and more!

Within the turbulent past several years, the idea that a person can be “cancelled” — in other words, culturally blocked from having a prominent public platform or career — has become a polarizing topic of debate. The rise of “cancel culture” and the idea of cancelling someone coincides with a familiar pattern: A celebrity or other public figure does or says something offensive. A public backlash, often fueled by politically progressive social media, ensues. Then come the calls to cancel the person — that is, to effectively end their career or revoke their cultural cachet, whether through boycotts of their work or disciplinary action from an employer. So which is it? Is cancel culture an important tool of social justice or a new form of merciless mob intimidation? If cancelling someone usually doesn't work, does cancel culture even exist? Or does the very idea of being cancelled work to deter potentially bad behaviour? These questions have received more and more mainstream consideration over the past few years, as the idea of cancel culture itself has evolved from its humorous origins into a broader and more serious conversation about how to hold public figures accountable for bad behaviour. And the conversation isn't just about when and how public figures should lose their status and their livelihoods. It's also about establishing new ethical and social norms and figuring out how to collectively respond when those norms are violated. - Vox Here, in the latest episode of Lay It On The Line, we talk in lengths about callout/cancel culture- the good, the bad and the worst parts of it.
