Even before Beyoncé kicked off her solo career, it was clear that she was a legend-in-the-making. As the de facto leader of Destiny's Child, she was a guiding light for the girl group and helped shepherd them to stardom in both the pop and R&B spaces. The group was at their height (and still very much together) as she launched her solo career, first with "Work It Out" for the Austin Powers in Goldmember soundtrack but with more gusto on "Crazy in Love. "Crazy in Love" served as the lead single for Beyoncé's debut solo album Dangerously in Love. The song was written in two hours and became a Number One hit the same week Dangerously in Love topped the albums chart. Beyoncé has developed significantly as an artist since then with her last two albums, Renaissance and Cowboy Carter, being prime examples of how she's still growing and finding new ways to master her artistry even two decades after the world first got a taste of who Beyoncé was on her own. On this week's episode hosts Rob Sheffield and Brittany Spanos discuss Beyoncé's career trajectory and how the superstar ended up being the youngest artist with the most entries on the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time List. Later in the episode, they are joined by their Rolling Stone colleague Mankaprr Conteh to dig into the star's artistry and appreciation for Black music history, which she continues to embed in all her work.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Before we even get an intro out we drop chats about Em's new glasses, Jennifer Saunders not recognising her own Ab Fab daughter, Saffy, aka Julia Sawalha on The Masked Singer, and a side quest about the TV series ‘Press Gang'. Once the intro is done, it's onto Em's love language, F1. Michael just has to endure it, safe to say his facial expressions express his interest throughout. Then it's onto the drama inside Miley Cyrus' family, with Billy Ray now married to a woman who auditioned for Hannah Montana 14 years ago and is 28 years his junior, and her mum Tish marrying her sister Noah's ex-boyfriend, it's giving messy. We pivot to Miley's new song ‘Doctor (Work It Out)' and Katy Perry's career demise, then into our respect for Rihanna giving the bare minimum of a performance at a Billionaire's wedding over the weekend. Welcome back for the first time and ever and always again to Post Relevant Podcast episode 24. Its time to resolve your opposites and check your mates as we spelunk way down into the depths of our own metaphysical mastery in pursuit of the Transcendental Object at the End of Time with rapper and chess master Anthony the Goat Cheese Koz aka the learned rebel known as Cheese! Host Phil Ristaino tries to keep up with this foolish sage as he sits down with Cheese and special returning guest Laurelle Rethke in her legendary NYC crystal shop the Faerie Den. Listen with eager ears as Cheese schools us all in the deeper symbology of the game of chess. If you want to understand why the masonic power players on the worlds stage make the moves they do, this is a must-listen episode. Along the way, we discuss taking acid and applying for college, Carl Jung stealing a rich man's yacht, why we need a critical mass of individuals striving to resolve the opposites within their own souls, and how the Grand Puba of chess insists extraterrestrials told him chess is the way to avert an alien invasion. To name a few things. Its deep, bruh. Honestly, this episode is all killer, no filler. Then! Phil throws on some beats, and Cheese and he get on the mics and freestyle for all you sinners. Its good crack, as they say in Glasgow. All this, plus hear some of Cheese's new tune 'Crackpot.' Its time to Be be be be be and do do do do do so we can all Do Be Do Be Do! Professor Alan Hawkins of BYU is here to talk to us about divorce ideation. How common is it for people to consider divorce? Does a marriage have to be terrible for thoughts of divorce to come up? Are divorces increasing or decreasing? Dr. Hawkins has been studying divorce ideation and has plenty of answers for us! He also has a newly refreshed (FREE) digital book coming out called, "Should I Try to Work It Out?". We will get the link and information for that free resource as soon as it is available. On this episode, we are joined by keyboardist and songwriter Ojo Taylor, guitarist and writer Gym Nicholson, long-time lead vocalist Sim Wilson, and drummer Gary Olsen of the Orange County rock band Undercover for an expansive conversation recorded in front of a live audience at the Audiofeed Festival in Illinois. Undercover emerged in the early 1980s at the pole position of the frenetic “second wave” of Jesus Rock that saw an explosion of New Wave, Punk, Rock, and pop bands like Lifesavors, Altar Boys, Lifters, Common Bond, Crumbacher, Youth Choir, and others fill high school auditoriums, bowling alleys, parks, and church youth halls with a righteous racket that thrilled teens, worried some parents, and eventually set the stage for the big business era of Christian rock in the 90s. Ojo Taylor not only led Undercover, though, he was also a curator of this bourgeoning scene – managing labels, producing albums, and putting together one of the most important early compilation albums – which spins when we crank up the now sticker-covered Jukebox for an overview of those heady, loud, formative years. Ojo made more waves in what's left of this underground community when he publicly admitted that he no longer holds the same religious beliefs for which he rocked so passionately back in the day. Like others, his personal spiritual journey has taken him in a direction that does not include the Evangelical faith of his younger years. But earlier this year, when a Christian music festival invited the long-defunct band to reunite for a special show, they agreed – and rocked Audiofeed (and before that, the Anaheim House of Blues) quite successfully. Why would a band with differing beliefs agree to gigs like those? As Ojo says, “Belief is overrated. Agreement is overrated. Love is underrated.” Find full Show Notes, including photos and video from Undercover's set at Audiofeed HERE or at TrueTunes.com/Undercover Undercover Music List Opening Segment Phil Keaggy & Rex Paul – Full Circle (podcast theme) Undercover – Man, O, Man; World Come Crashing Down; He's In Love With You Interview Segment Undercover – Excuse Us; I'll Be a Fool; Daddy-O; God Rules; Cry Myself to Sleep; Darkest Hour; Is Anyone Thirsty?; Work It Out; Devotion; Dark Night; Bridge of Life; One to One; Promenade; Land of Luxury The Altar Boys – I'm Into God Freedom of Soul – Caught in a Land of Time JUKEBOX Blessed Hope – Something More Bob & Joy Cull – Sail Away Undercover – One of These Days The Proclaimers (U.S.) – Rejoice Stephen Crumbächer – It Don't Matter Youth Choir – It's So Wonderful The Lifters – Listen Children The Omega Band – Idols Sharon McCall – From the Grave C.I.A. – Your Choice Malcolm and the Mirrors – Apathy The Altar Boys – Go for You Lifesavers – She's On Fire SFC – Phase III Adam Again – Eyes Wide Open The Electrics – Get to Heaven The Violet Burning – Low (Third Wave) The Prayer Chain – Chatterbox (Third Wave) D.A.S. – Beautiful World (Third Wave) Dakoda Motor Co. – Wind ‘N' Sea (Fourth Wave) Mortal – Paradigm One (Fourth Wave) Fold Zandura – Deep Surround Seven Day Jesus – Strength Spot Breaks Phil Keaggy & Mike Pachelli – Maccadocious (Two of Us)
Beyoncé's latest solo album, Renaissance, drops on July 29th so to get everyone prepared, Pop Pantheon will be releasing a series of four episodes on the work and legacy of Queen Bey, each with a different guest! In our second installment, DJ Louie is joined by author and journalist Julianne Escobedo Shepherd to discuss the first decade of Beyoncé's solo career. Louie and Julianne begin with Beyoncé's first steps outside of Destiny's Child, including her film appearances in 2001's MTV's Carmen: A Hip Hopera and 2002's Austin Powers in Goldmember, as well as on record with “Work It Out” and, most importantly, her feature on future-husband Jay-Z's smash 2002 hit “‘03 Bonnie and Clyde”. They then discuss the major themes of the first period of Beyoncé's solo music: ecstatic monogamous love, betrayal and infidelity, wealth accumulation and imbalanced gender dynamics and how they're all represented on Beyoncé's first solo album, 2003's blockbuster Dangerously in Love and amplified on her second, 2006's funky, terse fan-favorite, B'Day. They then dig into how B'Day's harder edge and relative commercial underperformance-- and the attention her co-star Jennifer Hudson swept up from under Beyoncé in the film adaptation of the musical Dreamgirls-- led to the more widely-appealing, if less singular, I Am… Sasha Fierce in 2008, and, after firing her father Mathew as manager, how Bey began to shape a new phase of career with 2011's languid, lowkey 4, in which she was no longer beholden to trends or hit-chasing, expanding her impact into something much greater than conventional pop stardom and providing the platform for the thrilling audio-visual projects which would both define the next decade of her career and change the music industry forever. Stay tuned for next week's installment, in which we'll dive into 2013's BEYONCÉ the visual album, 2016's Lemonade, 2018's Everything is Love, 2019's Homecoming and 2020's Black is King! Last week on Bold Steps, Pastor Mark Jobe started a three-part message on seeking God's guidance as we make plans and decisions for the future. And today, as we reach the end of our series called, Work It Out, we'll discover how to bring God into the middle of our decision-making. Turn to the book of James. We're in chapter 4, verse 13. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
When we're looking for answers, or searching for a sense of fulfillment … are we going to God with our needs? Or have we fallen out of alignment and placed our hearts and hopes in the world? Over the past few Bold Steps programs, Pastor Mark Jobe has been taking us through the book of James, in a study on Christian living titled … Work It Out. And today, he will continue this practical series by challenging us to reexamine our spiritual alignment. As we dive into this fundamental topic, we'll be opening our Bibles to James chapter 4. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
When you look at your own track record, would you say most of your life has been guided by the wisdom of God … or the wisdom of the world? Today on Bold Steps, Pastor Mark Jobe will continue our message on Making Wise Decisions … and he'll be teaching us how to identify and rely upon Godly wisdom. This message is part of a larger series on authentic Christian living called, Work It Out. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Against all odds your Sports Lordz are back with our 100th episode! We celebrate hitting the century mark by recording and releasing the longest and most self-serving episode yet. Throughout the episode we are joined by old friends and guests of the pod, the crew of our “sister podcast”, and an unbelievable reunion many have been waiting for. At points of this epic episode, we do discuss some sports including the NBA player's strike, the playoffs, James Harden, and the MLB trade deadline, but this is mostly a laid-back hang sesh episode. We're first joined by our old pal from episode 40 Eli Itzkowitz (3:26) and then friend/enemy of the pod from episodes 21 and 81, Jack Daly (24:01) drops in to be cancelled. Then we are joined by Rus Ryan, Drea Mora, and Rob Okey, better known as the Unbelievers Podcast (33:49) along with Aaron Schilb (47:06) and we catch up with them and see how Hellworld is treating them. Theeeen, we're joined by a couple of our good pals from episode 25 and 83, Jamaal Sedayao and from episodes 5, 24, and 91 Luke Mayeux (1:08:41) and then from episodes 4, 16, 77 and some minisodes, Diego's best pal, Caitlin Steitzer (1:45:05) drops by to say hello. As if this weren't enough, we round out this never-ending show with the reunion of the Unbelievable Podcast (1:55:28). Brian Frange, Phoebe Tyers (Episode 11), a quiet Matt J. Weir (Episode 37), and Sebastian Conelli join Kevin and Lordz to catch up on what everyone has been up to and have a few laughs. It's a long one so take it in chunks if you need to. We want to thank all our guests on this episode and all the guests who were on any of our first hundred episodes, but most importantly, thank you to all the Serfs who've listened to our silly little show. We genuinely appreciate it and look forward to pumping out more of our douchbaggery in the future. Thank you everyone!
