Bradley Jinaiyo Nussbaum is a Lay Minister with the Bright Dawn Center of Oneness and is based in New Jersey, USA. He is a social worker with a background in addiction and substance abuse and currently works in a hospice. His journey into Buddhism began when a colleague brought up the role of spirituality in mental health treatment and addiction recovery, and it occurred to him he had never included this important dimension in his own work, or indeed in his own life. After searching around and doing a lot of reading, he came across the Bright Dawn Center and it's unique blend of Zen and Pureland BuddhismIn this interview, Bradley talks about his father's illness with Alzheimers Disease and eventual death, and how, through the period of his illness, his mother became one of his most important troublesome buddhas. We discuss how working through difficult times such as this is often not pretty, and how making mistakes and messing up is part and parcel of the learning process. He also talks about dealing with difficulty within his marriage and also in his professional life as a social worker.Support the showThis podcast is sponsored by Zen Minded – an online lifestyle store offering you the very best of Japanese craft, incense & other Zen-inspired home-goods. Caroline Yongue wants to talk about death, a subject many of us would rather avoid. She's the founder and director of the Carolina Memorial Sanctuary, a small cemetery offering environmentally-friendly burials in Western North Carolina. The Sanctuary is grounded in a Buddhist ethos and committed to restoring native ecosystems. It's also part of a larger project to change how Americans approach death and grief — creating new ways to live with loss, from the ground up.
The ‘common good' is a powerful and evocative phrase, drawing us towards those aims and ideals that we share together. We hear politicians and leaders invoke it – and we often pray for it in church. But what the common good might mean is far from straightforward, especially when we know that all human beings are unique and there are many different ideas of what is good and fulfilling. Given this complexity and diversity, how do we find what is common, how can we come to agreement on things that matter to us, but without sacrificing our individuality? And what role can churches play in helping – or hindering – the search for the common good? This term we will be exploring these issues in a series of podcasts and discussions, starting this Wednesday at 8pm on Zoom and continuing on 24 February and 10 March. This week, I will be joined by Mariëtta van der Tol, who is a constitutional theorist and Alfred Landecker postdoctoral fellow at the Blavatnik School of Government. She was also recently Licensed as a Lay Minister in the Church of England. To start the series off, Mariëtta and I have recorded a short podcast. In it we talk about approaching the 'common good' through a genuine conversation about the kind of society we want to live in, and we discuss why it's so important to include all members of society in that conversation.

Or does it?" Our special guests also share their most hilarious moments at the pulpit AND the most hilarious responses that they have received when they introduced themselves as pastors. Suffering and joy/laughter, a healthy combination as we head into Good Friday and Easter.

On this week's programme Margie Kennedy, a lay missionary with the Redemptorists, shares some of her life story, in particular how God led her from nursing to lay ministry. Margie reflects on her life and outlines certain moments when her faith grew and was nurtured through the movement of God and the witness of others. We also have our usual reflection on the Sunday Gospel, saints for the week, liturgical odds and ends and notices.
After over 20 years nursing Margie Kennedy changed track completely. After taking early retirement she entered 3rd level to complete a four year degree course in Theology and Philosophy and studied for a further year to gain a Masters degree in Applied Theology. Margie is now working part-time with the Redemptorists helping with parish missions and also works two days a week as a Catechist working closely with an inner city school in Dublin.Margie's story encourages us to look back on our own lives and see how God was working and leading us. Perhaps we could ask ourselves the question of when our faith in Jesus Christ was ignited? When were our hearts set on fire for love of God? Margie highlights the importance of witness in living the faith, telling people about the love of God. Our mission as members of a family of faith is sharing that faith with others. Faith is passed on from our hearts, not from our heads. As Blessed John Newman said: "Heart speaks to heart."How do we cultivate belief? We practice, practice, practice! We celebrate our faith through Mass and the sacraments, through reading Scripture, prayer and devotions, by taking responsibility for our own education in the faith. As Margie says, "Faith in Jesus Christ compels us to make choices. We are either for Him or against Him." Margie encourages us to never give up hope - keep witnessing to God as we are meant to and He will work on people's hearts.
Dr. Barbara Lowe is a Licensed Psychologist who founded and has her own practice in Durham, NC. Greenleaf Psychological and Support Services has been consistently growing since its opening 6.5 years ago, with over 10 employees. She is also a Board Certified Life Coach, Somatic Experiencing practitioner, and Lay Minister alongside her husband, Tim. She is a mother and step-mother, and has used the wounds of her past as well as the skill sets she has acquired through study to minister professionally and personally to women and families for many years. Here is an excerpt from her website: “Perhaps my most powerful message is that it is okay to be flawed and that, in fact, it is our flaws that make us fabulous. Whatever form the fire in a woman’s life has taken – loss, trauma, deep disappointment, rejection, or neglect – I fully believe in her ability to rise through the ashes and be reborn. When a structure is ravaged by fire, building upon the foundation left behind is not an easy process. In order to create a better version of what once was, it is necessary to fully understand what came before. The builder needs to understand the footprint of that old building before a new one can be created. Likewise, when we are rebuilding our lives – and our psyches – we must honor what came before. Only then can we truly invest in the project of our own life and make that life our own”. Here are her 5 top tips: Find some good coaches – Ones that have your best interest at heart, no one is a perfect coach, have a mix of people of different ages and backgrounds and keep mentors along the way.Invest in Training for yourself and always be learning.Do really good market research make sure what you offer is unique.Community Over Competition with your attitude and find people who have that mindset too.Networking is key – take people out for coffee, bless them and ask them about their businesses so you can refer people to them.Hire the right people who align with your values and have a awesome recruitment process that will help this process. “Build a culture in your business that reflects the Lord.” Bible Verse for this season:John 7:38 “Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” Dr Barbara LoweWhere to find Dr BarbaraWWW.DRBARBARALOWE.COMDR.
