A Christian millennial melodrama that is equal parts snarky and depressing, THIS IS OUR TIME is a love letter from director Lisa Arnold to the dreamers who graduated college in 2012 with wide eyes and a twitter account and tried to make a name for themselves. Five friends each leave college with greatly different career prospects; Ethan feels shame about being stuck in a sandwich shop while his high-achieving friends Ryder and Kate land high-powered entry level business careers, and his sister Alé and her husband Luke move to India to do outreach missionary work for children with leprosy. When Alé is randomly hit by a car and dies (the most Christian film plot point ever) the friends must reassess their dreams amidst the sobering daylight of reality. They begin a “viral” social media campaign to raise funds for Embrace A Village, a real life charitable organization that seems to have sponsored the film in some way, confusingly blending fiction and reality. THIS IS OUR TIME is an aggressively 2010s film that puts a Christian flair on millennial stereotypes of lattes, iPhones, and the concept of “adulting”. The film conclusively proves that millennials who were seniors in college in the year 2012 are some of the most annoying people to ever walk the earth. In this week's episode I talk to writer, Christina Campbell. Christina lives in Northern Virginia, USA, with her cats. She writes about invisible illness, singles' rights, and the inexorable onslaught of entropy. Her book, And Sarah His Wife, won the Michigan Writers' Cooperative Press Chapbook Contest in 2017. After earning her Master of Fine Arts in Creative Nonfiction from George Mason University, Christina co-founded the singles' advocacy blog, Onely, with her MFA classmate, Lisa Arnold. The site deconstructs cultural stereotypes about single hood, such as the myth that unmarried people die alone, eaten by their cats! Christina's writing on Onely has been featured, quoted, or referenced in numerous publications, including The Atlantic.com; The Sydney Morning Herald; Boston Magazine; PsychologyToday.com; the book Going Solo: The Extraordinary Rise and Surprising Appeal of Living Alone by Eric Klinenberg; the book Singlism: What It Is, Why It Matters, and How to Stop It by Bella DePaulo; and the book It's Not You: 27 (Wrong) Reasons You're Single, by Sara Eckel.Topics that Christina & I cover are: What motivated her and her college classmate, Lisa Arnold, to start their blog, Onely; Why Christina started writing about systemic singlism and discrimination against single people; How Christina has been affected personally by systemic singlism;Bereavement leave, how even that seems to favour those who are married, and how Christina wasn't entitled to take bereavement leave for two of her close relatives; How single people aren't able to choose recipients of certain benefits, whereas married people are automatically allowed to benefit their spouses; How single hood has meant that Christina has been hugely financially disadvantaged in respect of her health care; The project Christina worked on which found that single people, at a certain salary rate, finish their life at least $1,000,000 worse off than their married counterparts; How both Christina and I have been asked by 6 year old girls why we're not married, and why we live alone; and how important it is to show little girls that it's ok to be alone.Despite several relationships, Christina has always been very content on her own and never really felt the need to couple up;The stigma around childless women and how they are often perceived as ‘selfish'.Bella DePaulo's term ‘single at heart' and how Christina and I feel about it.How our ‘women's intuition' is our strongest tool against the patriarchal narratives;Last but not least, our beloved ‘fur baby' cats! Chris and Ken meet with Lisa Arnold and Lynn Paslay, the Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent of the Lakeland Joint School District and discuss the issues that are the most important to parents about their children's education: parents rights, racial equity and gender identity indoctrination, performance standards, staff shortages, school choice, homeschooling, and levies.

How DO you want to be seen? Lisa Arnold shares with us how she approaches her clients when doing portrait photography. She said she started asking "how do you want to be photographed" and realized the answers were generic. She wanted rather to be able to capture the "true" person. She now asks "how do you want to be seen?". In doing so, she gets to know her client more intimately to be able to bring out their true beauty. It's apparent that Lisa is passionate about what she does and her photography reflects this. This episode is filled with truly heartfelt stories. Enjoy. You can reach Lisa and view her gallery at https://www.lisaarnoldphotography.com, as well as find her on Facebook at www.facebook.com/lisaarnoldphotography and Instagram @lisa.arnold.photography.More about Lisa:"I never really thought much about sharing my story until I realized that my story was the reflection of my clients' stories. It's why I decided to start the podcast, I was inspired by the responses I received from my portrait clients and realized others might be too. Now, when people hear about the process of being seen, of having the portraits created to reflect back to them who they really are, it can be very powerful. My dream would be to show women everywhere their beauty but reflecting them back to them. Their stories have moved me. I really appreciate Jacalyn for sharing her candid and compelling story about bulimia, and her continued struggle with it. As a Bulimia Recovery Coach, this interview was not easy. It is, however, honest and true. When a bulimic is not ready to let go and still feels bulimia is the answer to remaining slim, it is a bigger challenge to recover, and as a coach, I would be there to listen, however until the client is truly ready, any program would have a lesser chance of being successful. As we discuss, it really does have to come from within. It has to be a personal choice to let go and recover. To do it for others will not be sustainable. I do want to emphasize that you CAN recover from bulimia. You can maintain a healthy weight after recovery. It is important for both of these that YOU have the desire to. We also speak to the different levels of bulimia. In Jacalyn's case, she is not a binger, however she does purge every day. Jacalyn also spoke observing online posts where people seem to feel the need to "outdo" each other in severity. As discussed with Lisa Arnold, this can often reflect a need for attention. It may not be the kind we truly want.Jacalyn also questioned the influence of support groups on Facebook, wondering if they may be a trigger at times. I know I had felt that in live groups when I was first seeking to recover, particularly if the information was negative. This interview is to share with the listeners the story of someone still struggling, and I admire Jacalyn for agreeing to share. There are not many non-recovered bulimics willing to do this.Thank you, Jacalyn.#bulimia #bulimiarecovery #bulimiaover40 #midlifebulimia #bulimiaover50 #eatingdisorder #eatingdisorders #bullimiaddict #iamthatgal #bulimiacoach #bingepurge #bingeingandpurging #throwup #deceit #hide #lie #food #overeating #bleepbulimia #podcast #itunes #apple #buzzsprout #amazonmusic #alexa BE A GUEST/FIND A GUEST Start for Free! How Do You Want To Be Seen? What a lovely question and one that Lisa asks her clients during the introductory session. From a small used camera that she received as a gift at 17, Lisa found it to be such a great experience to photograph everyone. From there she began photographing wedding and learning about "being seen".Lisa tells of the story of having a beautiful bride who did not want herself photographed and realized no one is immune. During the shoot, Lisa explains that the bride to be became more at ease simply from the power of being "seen", This experience inspired Lisa to become a portrait photographer. At the beginning Lisa would ask "how do you want to be photographed" and realized it was not the best question, as no one knew. Hence her change to the question "how do you want to be seen?".From the story of a mother and daughter together, a mother doing everything right by her daughter, suddenly catches a glimpse of herself in the mirror and puts herself down. This reaction has the potential of affecting the daughter. "Reflecting back to them the beauty that I see", is what Lisa does with her work. She truly creates art out of her portraits. I suggest that those who are struggling with bulimia and their body image to step back and take time to go have your portrait done. See that beauty reflected back to you through art, the art of photography. To connect and view Lisa's beautiful artistic portrait photography visit http://lisaarnoldphotography.com/ and to listen to her Podcast visit How Do You Want To Be Seen.
