JFD returns just in time to spoil your Memorial Day weekend with a trio of cult flicks, two loosely connected to the world of Archie Comics and one that is decidedly not.Up first, is Hot Times (AKA A Hard Day For Archie), a raunchy sex comedy from 1974 with characters roughly modeled after Archie and his gang but instead of Riverdale, they live in grimy 70's New York City. Directed by celebrated underground director Jim McBride, the plot (as it is) follows Archie as he tried to get laid on New Year's Eve.Next, we have the sprawling, methodical Lake of Illusions from 1982. A Toho release about a young woman working in a history-themed bath house who loves to run and loves her dog but finds her world turned upside down when he canine companion is killed. And finally, early 2000's pop culture is on full display in Josie and the Pussycats from 2001 starring Rachel Leigh Cook, Rosario Dawson and Tara Reid as a pop-punk band who finds themselves in the middle of a capitalist conspiracy when they are inexplicably signed to a major label and marketed as the next big thing. All this plus Obsession chat, Kevin's adventures in the Motor City, 70's Brazilian cult cinema debuting stateside, Sam Raimi gets into dolls, more flicks from Indonesian horror icon Suzanna to own and so much more!LISTEN NOW:MP3 Direct DonloydAlso, if you like the show, please take a minute and subscribe and/or comment on us on iTunes, Stitcher, Blubrry or Podfeed.net. (Why Should The Devil Have All The Good Music?). El diseño sonoro, la realización técnica y las composiciones con IA de música instrumental que suenan de fondo, son de Daniel Panduro.

After bursting onto the late 60's cinema scene with the independent underground hit David Holtzman's Diary and entering the 70's with the post-apocalyptic counter-cultural romance Glen and Randa, Jim McBride began work on two very different screenplays. The first was Gone Beaver, the genre-bending tale of a brawny mountain man and his adventures in the wilderness, and the second is My Girlfriend's Girlfriend, a contemporary comedy-drama about the love lives of young New Yorkers. Ultimately neither film was produced, although the script for Gone Beaver has circulated among film scholars and gained a reputation as one of the great unrealized acid westerns. Both scripts are now finally available together in a new publication titled Jim McBride's Lost Screenplays of the 1970s. The Pink Smoke welcomes Jim McBride and the book's editor James Kenney to discuss the origins of these scripts, why their productions never saw fruition and how their author feels about them over 50 years after their inception. In this fantastic conversation, Mr. McBride also shares anecdotes about some of his well known 80's work, Breathless and Great Balls of Fire! Remakes continue to proliferate on our screens. Over the last few months, we've had live action remakes in cinemas of classic animations Snow White, Lilo And Stitch, and How To Train Your Dragon, along with legacy reboots of the horror hit I Know What You Did Last Summer and DC's Superman, and - coming soon - a new spin on the 1980s comedy The Naked Gun.So is this all just evidence of a dearth of creativity in Hollywood? Or are there some artistically valid reasons to re-make existing films? And can a remake ever be better than the original? Ellen E Jones and Mark Kermode delve into the past, present and future of the remake. Mark speaks to critic Anne Billson about the remakes she considers worthy of our attention, from Brian De Palma's Scarface to John Carpenter's The Thing. And he also talks with Jim McBride who, in 1983, directed Breathless - a remake of Jean-Luc Godard's French New Wave classic A Bout de Souffle, which Mark has long considered superior to the original.Ellen talks to TV critic Roxana Hadadi about what television can bring to the remake party - and about the TV series that managed to improve on their source material. And Ellen also speaks to Noah Hawley, showrunner of the multi-Emmy winning Fargo and upcoming Alien: Earth TV series, about the creative possibilities of TV reboots. What's cool, full of vibrant colors, gets pretty sexy but also is a bit annoying to the point where you question the integrity of the central relationship? That's probably Jim McBride's remake of the 1960 Nouvelle Vague classic À BOUT DE SOUFLE (in English): BREATHLESS.You might have thought: the most stringent of cinephiles would not touch a remake of this film with the longest of barge poles! It's a classic for a reason; however, this modern, pop-culture-filled, punky injection of 80's Neo-Noir cinema is much better than you might think. It takes some swings and hits most of them if you can get past the fact that Richard Gere's central character is one of the most annoying criminals in existence.Join us as we continue down an odyssey of appreciating Mr. Gere in all his fine glory from 1983.

Irish Distillers and Maynooth University Ireland are partnering on a pilot research project to develop an autonomous regenerative agriculture platform through robotics and sensing solutions, to improve the sustainability of cereal crop production. Through a two-year bursary, Irish Distillers will support a research team at Maynooth University on a journey to develop an efficient and economically viable solution, using robotics, to support regenerative agriculture and improve the environmental impact of cereal crop production. The project will use mobile farming robots, sensing solutions, and vertical solar panels to monitor and manage cereal cultivation, to optimise grain yields and resource utilisation while delivering a resilient ecosystem that nurtures soil health, biodiversity, and long-term environmental vitality. Maynooth University is a leader in pioneering theoretical and experimental research into field and service robotics and associated technologies, with a particular focus on applications where robots and humans collaborate to solve problems. The University Campus is home to a 1-hectare Robot Farm and a Sustainability Research Station. As part of this research project, test plots at the Maynooth University Robot Farm were planted this Spring with a variety of crops and monitored regularly throughout the summer with 3D cameras and soil testing before being harvested in Autumn. The robotics team has developed new imaging techniques that use both the shape and colour of the plant's leaves to automatically determine plant health. Graham Caulwell, Head of Sustainability & Compliance, Irish Distillers commented, "We are immensely proud to invest in the next generation to research and develop innovative solutions to address one of the biggest challenges of our time. With the integration of robotics, this pioneering project aims to support regenerative agriculture while enhancing efficiency. This partnership is more than a commercial alliance; it is the fusion of shared visions for a sustainable future." Professor Rachel Msetfi, Vice President of Research and Innovation said, "Maynooth University welcomes this partnership with industry in supporting the development of sustainable agriculture. This important collaboration aligns with Maynooth University's focus on sustainability as one of our key beacon research areas under the University's Strategic Plan. I would like to thank Irish Distillers for this funding and research opportunity." Maynooth University hosted a workshop on 31 October for Industry, Government, and Research stakeholders titled: "New Approaches in Sustainable Agriculture" discussing new approaches and collaborations in sustainable agriculture and energy production. Speakers included Dr. Jim McBride, CTO Otherlab USA, Karl Walsh from DAFM, Researchers across Biology, Robotics AI, and Business as well as panelists from Wakeup Capital, 2050 Accelerator, industry, and farming groups.

Aaron and Carlee from the Hit Factory podcast return from San Francisco for a deep dive into the underrated 1983 American remake of Jean-Luc Godard's landmark film Breathless, directed by Jim McBride. Assailed at the time of release for being a shallow exercise in style, to watch Breathless 40 years later is to see a work arguably as influential on the next generation of American filmmakers as Godard's original had been on the New American Cinema of the 1970s; the remake's cocktail of retro cool, fast cars and meta-textual pop culture references mark it as a clear influence on Tarantino, Lynch and Paul Thomas Anderson among others. In an inversion of the original plot, Richard Gere plays Jesse Lujack, a petty criminal in Vegas obsessed with Jerry Lee Lewis and Silver Surfer comics who steals a Porsche, shoots a highway patrolman on his way to LA and as the manhunt develops, hides out with a French architecture student he'd recently had a fling with named Monica, played by the 19-year-old actress Valérie Kaprisky. Breathless '83 is extremely sexy so at the constant risk of being thrown in Horny Jail, the three of us discuss the intense on-screen chemistry between Gere and Kaprisky, McBride's use of vivid color, rear-screen projection and music to heighten the cinematic experience, what the film has to say about toxic masculinity and male narcissism, and we discuss the Silver Surfer-obsessed Jesse Lujack as a cautionary tale about becoming Marvel-poisoned. Breathless is currently streaming on Criterion Channel and Tubi. Become a patron of the podcast to access to exclusive episodes every month, including this summer's entire Miami Vice sidebar series.
