As we get ready for Burns Night on 25 January, we're delving into the Love Scotland archives to bring you three episodes that reveal the life and legacy of Robert Burns. - Jackie gathers two companions to discuss the “song that everybody sings”: Auld Lang Syne. With lyrics penned by Robert Burns in 1788, but origins dating back further, it is now a global anthem of friendship, celebration, yearning and nostalgia. Mairi Campbell, a Scottish musician whose version appeared in the Sex and the City film and has since created a show inspired by the song, is the first of Jackie's two guests. Also joining the conversation is Professor Gerard Carruthers, Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and Francis Hutcheson Chair of Scottish Literature at the University of Glasgow.  To enjoy more episodes of Love Scotland, please follow or subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. For more information on the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum, click here. Explore the National Trust for Scotland's Robert Burns Collection online here. - A brand new series of Love Scotland will appear in your podcast feed later this spring.

David Francis comes from Dumfries in the south west of Scotland, but cut his musical teeth in the north east, playing for bands like Desperate Danz Band. He moved to Edinburgh in the 1990s and became a central figure in traditional music: performing with Mairi Campbell in the successful duo The Cast while occupying key positions in the Scottish Arts Council traditional music section and the Edinburgh Folk Festival. In Culture of Possibility #37, Arlene Goldbard talks with David Francis, who currently acts as Director of the Traditional Music Forum in Scotland, about its impressive network of traditional musicians, preservation, reinvention, formal and informal education, Scottish cultural policy and funding, and the whole tapestry of issues, questions, and possibilities it engages.

Portobello Singer-songwriter Rosie Nimmo’s fourth album, “Where Time Suspends”, has just been released. Produced by Marc Pilley (ex-Hobotalk, and now Arksong) , its ten tracks have been a long time in the making – and the lockdown didn’t help though the internet has brought together several different musicians to produce a beautiful, polished sound. They include local artists Mairi Campbell on viola, Debbie Nimmo on backing vocals, Graham Smith on guitar and Tommy Nimmo on bass guitar. Over the past week, it’s been “Album of the Week” for Scotland-on-Sunday and several BBC radio stations around the country have played individual tracks. And as Rosie explained to Porty Podcast producer David Calder, it’s very much an album for our time.Rosie's Website: https://www.rosienimmo.com/Bandcamp page: https://rosienimmo.bandcamp.com/Album Review: tinyurl.com/6ufwfd9b

Robert Burns is Scotland's most successful cultural export and this episode of Tae The Bard celebrates 'Auld Lang Syne' - without doubt his most well-travelled work. His version of this traditional song has become an intrinsic part of a range of occasions, from weddings and new year parties to, of course, the Burns Supper. While the song is much loved, many misunderstand its true meaning and perhaps miss its deeper significance. Our guests have close links to the song that has become a global anthem. Folk singer and musician Mairi Campbell's recording made an appearance in the first 'Sex & the City' movie and even inspired her to create a one woman show.

My guest on this episode of Adam Sutherland's Interesting People is Scottish singer, violist, fiddler, step-dancer and actor, Mairi Campbell.  During our chat, Mairi tells me about growing up in Edinburgh and dedicating herself to a solid classical music education.  But always in the background there was some kind of deeper yearning.  This has sometimes resulted in what could be described as a 'respectful unwillingness' to always conform.  And growing up, it might have gotten her into one or two musical scrapes, but ultimately has allowed her to find her feet.. to find her pulse.   Mairi's story is both enlightening and entertaining.  I feel that her insightful musings are bound to resonate with many.  In fact, the success of the first two chapters in her trilogy of theatre shows about her journey are a solid testament to that.   'Pulse' - Mairi's first theatrical debut received critical acclaim during a month of shows at the 2016 Edinburgh Fringe.  In August 2018 she returned to the Fringe with the second instalment, 'Auld Lang Syne', and I was very intrigued to hear, first hand, about it's creation.*  Listeners to this podcast will also hear about many other things, including: Mairi's plans for the third and final chapter of her trilogy, the time that US hit sitcom 'Sex and the City' used her and her husband Dave's version of Auld Lang Syne, and some of her thoughts on the state of traditional music in Scotland today.   All in all, an extremely thought provoking conversation between a very fine Scottish artist and some skinny bloke from the hills above Loch Ness.   *The author of this podcast had wished to air this episode before Mairi's run of Fringe shows, but unfortunately succumbed to the pressures of a two months of his own crazy performing schedule, so wishes to extend sincere apologies to Mairi for that.   **I am gradually improving my technological equipment and also my skills at recording and editing.  Sound quality is on an upward trajectory.
