Send us your thoughts! French and American singer Laura Anglade is a promising storyteller hailing from the idyllic town of Brousse-le-Château, France. She draws inspiration from Carmen McRae, Blossom Dearie, Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Shirley Horn, Billie Holiday, Michel Legrand and Barbra Streisand, among others.Laura has made a mark in the music scenes of New York, Paris, London, Toronto and Montreal, collaborating with some of the world's finest musicians, including Peter Bernstein, Jonathan Kreisberg, Ben Paterson, Ira Coleman, Reg Schwager, and Neil Swainson, to name a few.In 2022, she joined singer Melody Gardot across the east and west coasts of the United States and Europe. Laura has performed in renowned venues such as Olympia (Paris), the Royal Festival Hall (London), Town Hall (New York City), the Ace Theatre Hotel (Los Angeles), and the main stage at the Festival International de Jazz de Montreal. Her debut album, ‘I've Got Just About Everything' (Justin Time Records, 2019) was met with praise by critics and fans alike. Her second JUNO-nominated album, ‘Venez Donc Chez Moi' (Justin Time Records, 2022) is a duo recording featuring Montreal guitarist Sam Kirmayer, with whom she was awarded the “Prix Opus" for Jazz Concert of the Year in 2023. With her latest release, “April in Paris,” Anglade introduces a cappella – the young protagonist isalone, looking forward with both excitement and trepidation to a new life ahead. She inhabits the character in her vocal, breathing life into an experience she can relate to even if she hasn't lived it exactly.“I've been reflecting recently on the parallels between acting and singing,” she explains. “Each art form is an extension of the other. Singing, like acting, is rooted in human expression, in the power of a good story. I never pursued musical theater growing up, but I've found that the deeper I getinto this music and grow as a person, the more each song feels like performing a role. I visualize each song as if it were a monologue in a film, and somehow shape-shift myself into the part. That led to this album having a distinct beginning, middle and end.”Support the show

A lot of listeners worry that jazz has ossified in the last, say, fifty years or so, but Mike decides to do something about it, terminological speaking, anyway.  So this fortnight's episode explores the difference between curating a tradition and trying to create something new within it. Our test subjects comprise three brand-new releases (two instrumental, one vocal) and a vocal album from the nineties paying tribute to the Prince of Darkness himself, Miles Davis.  Curtis Taylor – TAYLOR MADE; Brandon Goldberg– LIVE AT DIZZY'S; April Varner – APRIL; Shirley Horn – I REMEMBER MILES.

Originally based in Oxford, Mississippi, hence its name, Oxford American is both a literary and general interest magazine intent on honoring the cultural wealth of the South. Four writings are discussed, beginning with “What If It All Burned Down?” by Katrina Andy, which as its title suggests, is loaded with questions about the largest slave revolt in U.S. history. It happens at the Andry Plantation north of New Orleans, in the aftermath of the successful Haitian Revolution. Two other writings involve music: there's “How to Take It Slow” by Lauren Du Graf and “Coming Up Fancy” by Jewly Hight. The first portrays Shirley Horn, emphasizing her unique singing and piano style as well as her being such a homebody that she took a pressure cooker along with her on musical road tours. The second takes the song “Fancy” as sung by Reba McEntire and others and explores what home means when it isn't a place of comfort. The episode's fourth entry, “The Mustang” by Gwen Thompkins, is an evocative piece about a family journey to see grandparents at the same time that the narrator's parents' marriage is coming to an end. Jessie Laine Powell hails from Lexington, Kentucky. She grew up with her talented siblings, listening to gospel music. Jazz vocalists Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Nancy Wilson, and Shirley Horn, along with the Lawrence Welk Show stirred her soul, dominating her musical taste. Her love for the stage, orchestras, and Jazz standards led her to Hollywood, California,  where she opened for Nancy Wilson. She added countless television, theatrical, and radio appearances to her resume. After years out West, Jessie returned to Lexington, where a fateful meeting with a church friend lead to a musical partnership with producer and Jazz artist Eric Copeland, who collaborated on her debut album On the Edge with Gospel, Soul, and Jazz songs. Later, Jessie landed a role in the movie Heart of a Champion, directed by Richard Fitzpatrick,  who sought music and soloists that conveyed the message of hope and perseverance. Jessie's vocals impacted the movie soundtrack, greatly. From 2015 to 2018, Jessie's tour schedule, included an annual performance at the East Hawaiian Jazz Festival, where she performed at multiple venues and churches, providing her melodic voice and inspirational lyrics with notable Jazz musicians. Jessie's singles include Like No Other Love, On The Edge, and Love Supreme, featuring Marion Meadows. Jessie leaves her fans feeling renewed and motivated as she takes you on an intimate musical journey. 2023 ALM Academy of Local Musicians Hall of Fame2023 LEX Music Awards Lifetime Achievement Award2023APPY Award Nominee for Best R&B Artist and Best Jazz Artist www.jessielainepowell.com www.wijsf.org

Maggie and extraordinary pianist and arranger,  Alan Broadbent discuss the 30th Anniversary of Unforgettable… with Love, the legendary singer and songwriter Natalie Cole's biggest album to date. Since its initial release in 1991, it has sold over seven million copies and also won Cole seven GRAMMY© Awards. The album features Cole singing several songs her father Nat King Cole recorded, nearly 20 years after she initially refused to cover her father's songs during live concerts. Cole produced vocal arrangements for the songs, with piano accompaniment by her uncle Ike Cole and many other first rate pianists and arrangers. The album's title track, an interactive duet with her father, would go on to be one of her most memorable recordings.Alan Broadbent was born in Auckland, New Zealand and in 1966, at the age of 19, received a Downbeat Magazine scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston. In 1969 he was asked to join Woody Herman's band as his pianist and arranger for 3 years. In 1972 he settled in Los Angeles, beginning a musical relationship with the legendary singer Irene Kral (no relation to Diana Krall). Soon he was also invited into the studio scene as a pianist for the great Nelson Riddle, David Rose and Johnny Mandel. In the early 90s he was asked to be a part of Natalie Cole's famous “Unforgettable” cd, at which time he toured as her pianist and, a little while later, as her conductor. At this time he wrote an orchestral arrangement for her second video with her dad, “When I Fall In Love”, which won him his first Grammy Award for “best orchestral arrangement accompanying a vocal”.Turning PointsShortly after, he became a member of Charlie Haden's Quartet West, touring the festivals of Europe, UK and the USA. It was while with this group that he won his second Grammy, an orchestral accompaniment written for Shirley Horn of Leonard Bernstein's “Lonely Town”.As a soloist and with his jazz trio, Broadbent has been nominated for Grammys twice for best instrumental performance, in the company of such artists as Herbie Hancock, Sonny Rollins and Keith Jarrett. In 2007 he was awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit, an honor he holds in high regard. The NowBroadbent is Diana Krall's conductor for her occasional orchestra concerts and is the conductor on her “Live in Paris” DVD. Recently he has been the arranger on Glenn Frey's cd with strings, “After Hours”, and wrote six string arrangements for Sir Paul McCartney's “Kisses On The Bottom” with the London Symphony. He has just returned from solo piano concerts in the UK, Poland and France. It has been his lifelong goal, through his orchestral arrangements and jazz improvisations, to discover, in popular music and standard songs, deeper feelings of communication and love.Source: https://craftrecordings.com/products/natalie-cole-unforgettable-with-love-30th-anniversary-edition-cdSource: https://www.alanbroadbent.comThis episode is from an archive from the KPFK program Profiles adapted for podcast. Host Maggie LePique, a radio veteran since the 1980's at NPR in Kansas City Mo.
