It could take seven decades before large-scale nature restoration is underway across 30% of Scotland's land, new figures from the Scottish Rewilding Alliance show. The coalition of more than 20 organisations calculates that rewilding across Scotland is now underway across 2.5% of the country's land, with 195,615 hectares rewilding. This is an increase of 32,985 hectares since the Alliance's last assessment one year ago, which reported that 2.1% of Scotland's land was rewilding. Long haul to reach nature recovery In line with global targets, the Scottish Government is committed to protect at least 30% of its land and sea for nature by 2030. But at current rates of increase, it will take 65 years before major nature restoration is underway across 30% of Scotland's land. Rewilding has been surging in recent years, and across Scotland there are now nearly 200 projects led by communities, charities, farmers, landowners, public bodies and others. But the Alliance says a significant increase in political support is now needed to reach the target. Thousands of people across the country have backed the Alliance's call for Scotland to be declared the world's first Rewilding Nation, with nature recovery across 30% of its land and sea. This week the Scottish Rewilding Alliance is taking those voices to parliamentarians by speaking with MSPs at a dedicated display stand in the Scottish Parliament. "Urgent political action is needed. Leaving it until 2090 before Scotland can benefit from nature recovery across 30% of its land is something we can't afford," said Steve Micklewright, Scottish Rewilding Alliance co-convenor and chief executive of Trees for Life. "Politicians from all parties need to step up. With political will, rewilding can help us tackle the nature and climate emergencies while benefiting health, jobs, sustainable food production and re-peopling, and ensuring clean air and water, and healthy rivers and seas." Rewilding 30% of Scotland can be achieved by restoring habitats including peatlands, native woodlands, wetlands, rivers and seas, while maintaining and benefitting productive farmland. Scotland is ranked one of the world's most nature-depleted countries. Research shows that intensive agriculture and climate breakdown are having the biggest impacts on habitats and wildlife, with other threats including non-native forestry, pollution, and introduced species. Polling shows that 80% of Scots think the Scottish Government should have policies in place to support rewilding. But rewilding is not yet included in the Government's key policies and frameworks, such as the planning framework, net zero plan, and biodiversity strategy. There are fears that planned legislation, including the Land Reform Bill, may be less ambitious than planned when it comes to nature restoration. Levels of marine recovery are unknown, due to government delays on ensuring effective Marine Protected Areas and lack of support for large-scale marine restoration. Based on known rewilding projects, however, the total area of Scotland's seas in recovery is believed to be dangerously low at less than 1%. "With political leadership in line with its international commitments, Scotland could become a world leader in nature recovery - the opportunities and benefits are huge," said Karen Blackport, the Alliance's co-convenor and chief executive of Bright Green Nature. "Declaring Scotland a Rewilding Nation would lead to meaningful action with ministers committing to restoring the country's natural environment through legislation and funding to enable rewilding and empower local communities." The Rewilding Nation Charter at www.rewild.scot/charter, calling on the Government to declare Scotland a rewilding nation, has been signed by thousands of people. The campaign has been backed by high-profile names including Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio, actor Brian Cox, singer Nathan Evans, and activist Laura Young (Less Waste Laura). At this week's display in the Scott...

It's been seven years since Colorado-based Vail Resorts bought the ski resort at Stowe. Almost immediately, Vail cut the cost of a season pass there in half. But cheaper skiing hasn't deterred people from lampooning Vail online or displaying angry bumper stickers in ski town parking lots — spotlighting a tension over the soul of Vermont ski culture and ski towns. In this episode, we look into what's changed since Vail's entry here, from chairlift upgrades to stress on the housing market. Plus, a general sense of transformation that's harder to pinpoint. The Consumer Electronics Show for 2024 has come and gone, but the memories of the world's biggest technology showcase remain. Recapping the extravaganza is our own Senior Tech editor Herman Exum joined by techie neophyte Nathan Evans and MVP guest Ben Crossman from The Computer America Show to talk about the magical future-world of tomorrow's tech… today! Without question, the real star of CES 2024 was AI. From clever uses to questionable ones, the show floor in Las Vegas was dominated by AI in all its forms, including repurposed smart home devices, AI-powered outdoor grills, bird-identifying binoculars, PC accelerator cards, adorable robot companions, beds, pillows…Who needs to think when AI can do it for you? But it's not just AI! Other headline making tech included gigantic screens (C Seed's N1 wants all your money), transparent OLED/MicroLED displays, home battery backup systems, E Ink toilets (yup), clutter-free desktop PCs, Windows/Android hybrid laptops, UTI diagnostic tests, smart dog collars, PlayStation cars, dancing “interactive” plants, and much, much more.

Our guest on this literary episode of the Popzara Podcast is Dr. Bernard Schweizer, Professor Emeritus of English at Long Island University, who joins our own book nerd Nathan Evans to talk about the formation of Heresy Press, his new publishing outlet designed to "give oxygen to unfettered creativity and to provide a home for authors and books that are not currently favored through the conventional publishing channels." They also discuss Heresy's debut release, Nothing Sacred: Outspoken Voices in Contemporary Fiction, an anthology of 12 original stories from an eclectic collection of authors whose only commonality is fearlessness. Dr. Bernard and Nathan also chat about the importance of freedom of speech in a world increasingly given into tribalism, Pen America's worrying analysis on the publishing industry's "booklash", avoiding left/right labels, censorship by exclusion, navigating and avoiding destructive negativity on social media, the growing dissatisfaction with identity politics (exemplified in recent works like R.F. Kuang's Yellowface and the Jeffrey Wright-starring American Fiction), and much more.

Our guest on this episode of the Popzara Podcast is a veteran of the gaming industry who knows a few things about remembering (and collecting) classic games, Digital Eclipse's editorial director Chris Kohler, whose career as a journalist, historian, presenter, and, naturally, an actual game player, make him uniquely qualified to talk about The Making of Karateka, the first title in his company's planned Gold Master Series of “interactive documentaries”. Last year's Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration signaled a momentous change in what a collection of older games could be: using the medium to let players experience and interact with both the games and their history. The Making of Karateka narrows this focus to a single title, telling the story how a teenaged Jordan Mechner (Prince of Persia), inspired by his love of Bruce Lee and martial arts films, would innovate game design by applying cinematic elements and a greater emphasis on story with 1984's Karateka on the Apple II computer. There was more to the story, of course. Our own amateur archivist Nathan Evans and Chris deep dive into the creation of Digital Eclipse's groundbreaking series, the “gamification” of gaming history, how the relationship between Jordan and his father Francis Mechner may be the real story behind Karateka's success, and how Nintendo's year of unparalleled successes in 2023 may be the catalyst for others to start taking the preservation of gaming history more seriously.
Joining our resident blockhead Nathan Evans on this episode of the Popzara Podcast are the writing/cartooning duo of Luca Debus and Francesco Matteuzzi to talk about their new book Funny Things: A Comic Strip Biography of Charles M. Schulz, a unique look at the life of the cartoonist that uses comic strips to illustrate his Midwestern roots to creating the world's most beloved comic strip, Peanuts. 2022 was the centennial of Charles Schulz (1922 – 2000) birthday, and what better way to celebrate the creator of Charlie Brown, Lucy, Linus, Snoopy and Woodstock than with a lovingly created look at his life through comic strips? The guys discuss the world's love of Peanuts, finding the right moments of Schulz's life to share with fans, giving lesser known cartoonists (Jim Sasseville) their due, similarities with Bill Watterson's Calvin ‘n Hobbes, how finding the right partners (Bill Melendez, Vince Guaraldi) helped bring Peanuts to life, and so much more.

For Bruce Lee fans 2023 marks two anniversaries; both his untimely death and the release of Enter the Dragon, which would have catapulted him to worldwide superstar status had he lived to enjoy it. But Lee had been working on another project prior to his passing, surviving only in video fragments and notes. The version of “The Game of Death” released in 1978 exhibited little, if any, of Lee's original vision. Joining our own grandmaster Nathan Evans and returning champion Kevin (YouTube's StoryDive) on this episode of the Popzara Podcast is James Flower, writer, editor, and director behind The Final Game of Death, a mammoth 223 minute analysis of both the surviving footage and the philosophical methodology behind Bruce Lee's final film as part of Arrow Film's exquisite Bruce Lee at Golden Harvest Limited Edition, which also includes beautifully remastered 4K editions of The Big Boss, Way of the Dragon, Enter the Dragon, commentaries, interviews and so much more. Nate, Kevin and James gather on the field of (podcast) battle to chat about what it's like to undertake such a project, the love/hate relationship fans have with Clouse's original “The Game of Death”, how Lee's film would revolutionize and influence martial art films and videogames, shameless “Bruceploitation” clones, “sanitizing” Asian content for Western audiences, physical media vs. streaming, the importance of proper film restoration, and the timeless appeal Bruce Lee still commands around the world.

Anger against the government and rail authorities is hotting up. Sarah Leadbetter is taking legal action over plans to close railway ticket offices across England which disabled people say will hit them the hardest. After 8 and a half years, the great Luke Ski has finally released another album, the aptly titled "Needlessly Meta." On it, he continues his series of "Dumb Parody Ideas" interstitial tracks from his previous album, abbreviated as D.P.I., presenting us with seven new additions. This track is the final one on the album, #13. The premise is simple: How come nobody has gotten around to doing a parody of the popular sea shanty "The Wellerman" by Nathan Evans about David Letterman? Luke Ski fills that egregious void by singing about the glorious eleven year history of the bizarre talk show juggernaut that was "Late Night with David Letterman" for 88 seconds. You're welcome. Mixed by Jeff Dutton a.k.a. Bonecage Special thanks to Fard Muhammad for editing an amazing video for the song You can buy "Needlessly Meta" on CD and/or digital download on Bandcamp, buy it digitaly on iTunes, and you can listen to it for free on Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple Music, and a bunch of other places.

On this heartfelt episode of the Popzara Podcast our own Nathan Evans speaks with the father and son duo of Dick and Phil Wall, husband and son to author Carol Wall, whose memoir Mister Owita's Guide to Gardening: How I Learned the Unexpected Joy of a Green Thumb and an Open Heart, was released in early 2014 to critical and commercial success. Sadly, it was a success its creator would not live to see; Carol passed away that December, just 9 months after its publication. Dick and Phil discuss their new film The Book Keepers, Phil's intimate documentary chronicling his father embarking on the promotion tour of Mister Owita's Guide to Gardening across the country, visiting hundreds of locations in dozens of states. But in the process, however, Dick's journey becomes less about selling books and more a celebration of Carol's life, a meditation on not just the effects loss and grief has on each of us, but of healing and celebrating the memory of those we love.

In response to the new global Social Media phenomenon of sea shanties sparked by the Scottish postman Nathan Evans' rendition of The Wellerman, Dr Sam Willis speaks to Professor Gerry Smyth, author of a new book published by the British Library: 'Sailor Song: The Shanties and Ballads of the High Seas'. They discuss how shanties were collected and annotated, how they were inspired by changing commercial conditions at sea in the nineteenth century and how each shanty has a fascinating history of its own. In particular they look at John Kanaka, South Australia, Roll Alabama Roll and the Drunken Sailor - which, did you know, came from an ancient Irish clan march... As the craze for sea shanties (started by Scottish postman Nathan Evans) continues to grow on social media worldwide, Outlook returns to Port Isaac, a tiny English village, where in 2019 Emily Webb met the sea shanty band The Fisherman's Friends. The group got together 25 years ago and started singing sea shanties, which are a type of maritime song. After a chance encounter with a BBC radio DJ, Johnnie Walker, they ended up landing a £1 million record contract. Much to the group's surprise, their album rose up the charts and they went on to play the Royal Albert Hall and Glastonbury Festival. Things were going well until 2013, when an accident backstage at one of their gigs killed singer Trevor Grills and the band's tour manager Paul McMullen. The band didn't perform for a year and in fact had no intention of singing again. However, they returned to the stage and have had a feature film made about them, Fisherman's Friends.
