Not true anymore. Resilience Parenting is it if you want to raise kids who can handle anything! I've worked with children for thirty years, and I wish I had the wisdom contained in this book when I started. It would have made me a far better parent and teacher." —Mark Goblowsky, host of the podcast Strength Through the Struggle Resilience Parenting: Raising Resilient Children in an Era of Detachment and Dependence by Chris and Holly Santillo Publisher: Lioncrest Publishing (March 22, 2019) Your children will face many challenges in the years ahead, so you want to raise them to be resilient—strong, adaptable, and able to recover. It is your mission to empower your son or daughter to cultivate a functional and fulfilling life. This essential handbook will help you achieve that goal. In Resilience Parenting, martial arts instructors Chris and Holly Santillo share the insights they have gained as teachers and parents. They offer positive alternatives to lecturing, bribing, and punishing; focusing instead on three Pillars: Learning, Integrity, and Service. By applying these powerful principles, you can inspire your children to develop the independence they need to succeed as adults while renewing their connection to family and community. Whether you are raising a teenager or just starting your family, the methods prescribed in this book will help you unlock your greatest potential as a parent. Parents, both new and old, will find much of value in these pages." —Kirkus Review "This is the book that the nurse should hand new parents at the hospital. It is an articulate, straightforward, and approachable guidebook, which can be easily read in just a handful of hours, on transforming the bundle of baby into a productive adult." —Martial Journal "Chris is fighting the twin evils of our era: excessive fear for our kids, and busybodies trying to enforce it." —Lenore Skenazy, president of Let Grow, author of "Free-Range Kids," and founder of the Free Range-Kids movement "Resilience Parenting provides a new twist on time-tested tactics that will help us be better and do better. Read this book!" —Connor Boyack, president of the Libertas Institute and author of "Passion-Driven Education: How to Use Your Child's Interests to Ignite a Lifelong Love of Learning" "This is a superb and practical book, founded on years of teaching and parenting. The principles in this book provide the life tools missing in most homes and classrooms today. Learn them, then use them." —Steven P. Bucci, former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Homeland Defense "As a Special Forces officer and lifelong student of leadership and training, I have spent a lot of time and effort trying to divine what makes a person more resilient. Chris and Holly Santillo's book Resilience Parenting masterfully distills what they have learned in over twenty years of teaching martial arts and parenting and conveys those lessons in an easy-to-understand and entirely implementable way. As someone who has entrusted my children to their training--and who personally knows their three boys--I can attest that what they do works. I give his book my strongest possible recommendation." —Roger D. Carstens, Lieutenant Colonel US Army Special Forces (retired) "We are at a crossroads in our country. We either continue down the path we are on--creating generations of kids who lack mental fortitude, emotional resilience, and physical health, leading our country to financial, moral, and social ruin--or we pivot and begin to create the conditions for our children to grow into mature, healthy, free, and fully functioning adults. Resilience Parenting is a road map toward the latter. I hope enough parents are smart enough to pick it up." —Michael D. Ostrolenk, M

Mark Goblowsky is an air force veteran, career martial artist, podcaster, author, and entrepreneur. He is on a mission to help others overcome the obstacles in their life based on his own experiences. Favorite Success Quote “Most people overestimate what they can do in one year and underestimate what they can do in ten years” ~Bill Gates Key Points 1. Practice Your “Kung Fu” The martial art kung fu literally translates into two words. Effort and time. And the only things that are standing between you and your goals are these two factors. If you can become a master of Kung Fu, a master at putting in the effort over time, you will succeed. We all want to achieve great things, we all want a great life. We want the business, the relationships, and the body. And you can have it! You can have it all. But you must be willing to approach life through the lens of Kung Fu. Put in the effort, be patient with the time, and you will succeed. Because at the end of the day, time is going to pass whether you are doing what you love and pursuing your goals or not. So stop worrying about the outcome and get busy doing what you need to do to create the life that you want to live. If you are willing to be patient, to stick through it when times are tough, and to trudge forward even in the face of adversity, at the end of the day, you will be successful. No one who was truly committed to their craft, dream, or ambition for more than a decade fails. You will have failures along the way, yes. But at the end of the day, when it’s all said and done if you are willing to keep doing the work year in and year out especially when it’s hard, you will succeed. 2. If You Aren’t Happy on the Journey You Won’t Be Happy at the Destination There is a pervasive myth in society that “One day” we will be happy. We believe that when we finally have the six pack, the 7-figure company, the beautiful girlfriend, the house on the beach or the sports car then we will be happy. But the truth is that happiness can be experienced right here and now. And not only can it be experienced now, it must be experienced now. Because if you are not happy on the journey, you will rarely find happiness at the destination. If you cannot learn to be happy while you are building your business, you will not be happy when you sell it for $10 million. If you cannot learn to be happy while you are training your body and building your physique, you will not be happy when you finally attain the look you’ve been longing for. If you cannot allow yourself to be happy while you work to find the woman of your dreams, no relationship will ultimately satisfy you. Happiness is a choice, and if you aren’t choosing to be happy along the journey, you will arrive at the destination and wonder “Is this it?” 3. Resistance Gives You Strength Most of you reading this want to become stronger. In all areas of your life. But what most of you don’t realize is that strength doesn’t come from ease. If you go to the gym every single day of your life from now until you die and all you do is push against the air, you will never get stronger, you will never build a strong body, and you will never force your muscles to grow. To become stronger, you must push against resistance, you must struggle, you must sweat, and you must bleed. And this doesn’t just apply to the gym. If you want your relationship to be stronger, you will have to face resistance. You cannot have a thriving marriage and never face adversity together. Because it is in times of struggle when love is truly born. It’s only when your marriage is facing resistance in some form or another that it is strengthened. In your business, you will never achieve success if you stay in your comfort zone and never face resistance. Success in business mandates failures. It mandates struggles and resistance that force you to grow, adapt, and evolve with the times. So embrace resistance, for it gives you strength. 4. Understand What is Truly Important When Mark’s son was a young boy, he and his mother were in a terrible hit and run car accident with a semi-truck. His son suffered from a traumatic brain injury and now suffers from disabilities that will affect the rest of his life. When he got the call that his son was in a coma, how do you think Mark responded? Did he say “Gee, that really sucks… But I’ve got to finish up this project at work” Or “Wow! I will be there later, but I just really need to close this client… They’re worth a lot of money.” Hell no! He dropped everything in his life and was by his son’s side 24/7 for four months. Nothing, not his business, not his finances, not even his health got in between him and his child. And it is in times of severe duress that we realize what is truly important. Most of us spend our lives chasing external validation that is ultimately pointless instead of spending time on what really matters… The people that we love. Yes, you should want to be successful. Yes, you should want to be healthy, wealthy, and wise. But what’s the point if the people you love aren’t there to share it with you. Understand the importance of family, friends, and love and make that your focus in life. Everything else is dust in the wind. 5. When Hope Disappears, So Does Action You must always keep hope, no matter how grim the circumstance. And by hope, I don’t mean positive thinking. Hope is a powerful acronym that you must remember when life becomes hard. Here and now. Opportunity Perseverance Enthusiasm If you wish to keep moving forward and succeeding in life, you must live in the here and the now, you must always look for opportunities in adversity, you must push through adversity, and maintain a constant enthusiasm for success. When you lose hope, you lose the ability to take action. And when you stop taking action… You wither away and die. Never lose hope.

There are about 7 billion people who will face adversity at some time in their lives, so a big market! His son was hurt in a hit/run car accident; he felt alone; wasn't sure how to deal with it Wanted to create something that others could have as a resource when they were confronted with adversity; to let them know they aren't alone Many of us look for ways to avoid adversity; how do we know when that's the right course or when we need to face something head on? There are lots of people who actively look for adversity (ultramarathon runners; climbers; etc.) Most of us are not like that However, many of us are looking for an effortless life, and we're trying to avoid the pain that is necessary to get that growth So look at adversity as whether it's going to serve me that is going to make me a better version of myself (lawyer example; athlete example) As a parent, we wish raising kids was easy, but it's not. And those struggles are opportunities for us to become better versions of ourselves. When we press into those adversities, we gain strength and can serve others How do we do it?! What does it look like or what are helpful tools to use when we face those situations? Life deals what it deals, and we have to come to terms with reality Important to embrace the fact we don't have control over the hand dealt to us; we can only control how we respond He has failed at this in the past and got caught up in how the situation happened (Daniel asks about Mark's martial arts) – Mark had a tough upbringing; was molested as a child; but when Kung-Fu came out, he admired the main character's peace and power, the strength and ability to protect himself; didn't pursue it until he was in his 20s and by that time he had been attacked, stabbed, etc. so he knew how to scrap; Realized the pain of being afraid the rest of his life was greater than any pain that would come from learning Kung-Fu Kung-Fe became something Mark could fall back on when his son was hurt There was so much uncertainty and so much fear; sitting next to his bed that first night, holding his hand, thought if he held his hand, he could keep him here on the earth and prevent him from dying (Daniel shares about his own situation with his infant daughter) When you teach or coach someone who is going through a tough time, what are some of the common mistakes you see people make when trying to get through it? Right that they're not really mistakes; there are a lot of unknowns, so you're just learning along the way People try to make too many changes at once, and that is a very difficult thing to do; we didn't get unhealthy overnight, and we're not going to fix it overnight either We don't take very good care of ourselves, so we need to show some self-leadership; he should have gotten some help; tried to gut his way through it and shouldn't have done that; gotta find a way to hang on to hope How important is having a support network around you? Family/friends? No man is an island; we really need each other; men aren't good at reaching out and being honest about how we feel on the inside There is an increase in the suicide rate of men in the U.S., and that's scary Men don't have other men around them to share the tough conversations with; we're scared He stepped out and went to a conference at one point that really helped him connect with others going through traumatic situations, and it was a tremendous help His encouragement for people who are struggling is to find someone you can trust, start to connect with them, and have the honest conversations about what is going on (Daniel follows up with encouragement to get people around you) Men be vulnerable with your wife; they are in your corner but we need to trust them and give them the benefit of the doubt You have a remarkable podcast of your own, and I'd like to ask you to share a few stories from your show to help bring this home. You have plans on getting to the C-suite or launching a business but ultimate success seems as far away today as ever. You’re at the right place because you can get there from here. And I can help. Who I Am I’m a speaker, coach, and former Division I All-American wrestler that helps motivated former athletes reach their full potential by getting clarity on what they really want and taking aggressive action to lead their ideal life not just despite their prior failures but because of them. I’m a husband and father of four. And I’m a serial entrepreneur. I’ve launched multiple successful businesses as well as the obligatory failed one. I’ve been the executive director of a non-profit and have raised millions of dollars. I’ve worked in sales. I’ve even been a Division I head coach. While I was born in a blue-collar home I have spent my life surrounded by Olympians, CEO’s and millionaires. Jim Rohn said, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” I’ve been lucky. I’ve learned the habits of successful people and guess what. You’re just like them. Coming up this week… Why does God allow bad things to happen to good people? A magic photo bag that is bigger on the inside than it is on the outside And a remarkable conversation with Mark Goblowski, creator of the Strength Through the Struggle podcast Click here to download or listen to this episode now. Spiritual Foundations Why does God allow bad things to happen to good people? Here’s the short answer…He doesn’t. In this week’s episode I’ll give you a scripture-based answer to back this up, but here’s all you really need to know: God is good. The devil is bad. ‘Nuff said. Tip Of The Week A magic photo bag that is bigger on the inside than it is on the outside. I have been faced with a travel dilemma for some time now. I live in a smallish city that often requires me to take smaller regional jets with limited overhead bin space to get where I need to go. That’s a problem because I travel with my photo gear, business essentials, and my carry-on bag with my clothes. All that baggage makes me look like a sherpa loaded down to climb some great mountain. This is not a good look for me by the way. Enter the Airport Essentials photo bag, from ThinkTank. It checks all the boxes that I need in a bag, and the best part is that it’s magically bigger on the inside than it is on the outside. Mark Goblowsky is a father, a veteran, a business-owner, a podcaster, and a strength spreader. His mission is to spread strength and courage by bringing peoples challenges into the light and using them to give others inspiration and strength as they walk through their own challenges.
Mark Goblowsky grew up in northeast Ohio and joined the U.S. Air Force at the age of 20 where he served as a non-commissioned officer for 9 ½ years earning the Air Force Achievement Medal as well as the Air Force Commendation Medal. While serving overseas he began his formal study of the martial arts (although his “informal” training in the combat arts began at the age of six in kindergarten with a fellow student who will remain nameless to protect the guilty). Upon returning to the United States he began teaching part-time. With an honorable discharge in hand and a strong desire to help others build confidence, courage and live a healthy lifestyle, he took up martial arts as a full-time career in July of 1990 just outside of Omaha, Nebraska. Mark went on to grow his two schools to a combined enrollment of over 800 students with his primary facility being one of the largest single locations in the United States. Mark lives and teaches primarily in Omaha but does travel to teach as well. He is currently working on a book about his life titled Strength Through The Struggle.
