Amira Barger shares four common arguments against DEI and how to dismantle them on episode 525 of the Teaching in Higher Ed podcast. Quotes from the episode Many people who are at the margins often know from lived experience that the playing field is not level, and that there are biases that leaders and individuals across any and every institution have to mitigate. -Amira Barger Many people tend to view the work of diversity, equity, and inclusion as this sort of a 0 sum game. That idea of we're lifting someone else up means you have to push or bring someone else down. And that's not at all what we're trying to do this work. -Amira Barger It really is about leveling the playing field. It's not about taking things away, but it's about understanding. -Amira Barger What are you creating so that others can see themselves represented in the spaces they're in with you? -Amira Barger I try to very intentionally surround myself with people who believe and think differently than I do so that I can understand where they are coming from. -Amira Barger Resources 4 Common Arguments Against DEI and How to Dismantle Them, by Amira Barger To Overcome Resistance to DEI, Understand What's Driving It, by Eric Shuman, Eric Knowles, and Amit Goldenberg The Curb-Cut Effect How AI is Transforming DEI - and What Leaders Should Keep in Mind, by Amira Barger Navel Gazing: John Dickerson's Notebooks: Sending Our Son to College Navel Gazing: John Dickerson's Notebooks: Remembering George and Defending the Morning Navel Gazing: John Dickerson's Notebooks: The Sneaky Pitfalls of the To-Do List The Wake Up: Closing the Gap Between Good Intentions and Real Change, by Michelle Mijung Kim The Moth Storytelling Podcast

When Doing “No Harm” Isn't Good Enough: Bringing beneficence to your clients Curt and Katie chat about ethics again. We look at how therapists decide what is beneficial for clients. We also contrast the concept of “beneficence” (doing good) versus “nonmaleficence” (doing no harm). We specifically explore how to identify when something is in the therapist's interest versus the client's interest as well as what therapists can do when clients hold harmful, untrue beliefs. This is a law and ethics continuing education podcourse. Transcripts for this episode will be available at mtsgpodcast.com! In this podcast episode we talk about how therapists do good, beyond “do no harm” Therapist healthcare ethics are often taught from the perspective that the professional's role is to “do no harm” when providing treatment to clients. Lost in the teachings is that therapists have other obligations to address when providing treatment. This workshop focuses on examples of bringing the principle healthcare ethic of beneficence to therapy to help determine “doing good” for the client's benefit. What is beneficence in the context of psychotherapy? ·      Do what is good for the client and for treatment ·      “For the benefit if the client” ·      Comparing this with the idea of non-maleficence (“do no harm”) which is don't do bad things, but also try to prevent bad things from happening How do therapists decide what is “good” for their client? ·      Assessing the risk of overtaking client autonomy and becoming paternal or parental ·      Balancing all of the core ethical principles and putting them in context for the unique situation for each client ·      Looking at whether therapist self-disclosure is in the benefit of the client ·      Identifying what is therapeutic and beneficial ·      Making sure that therapists move beyond what is comfortable (and not “harmful”) to something that may be less comfortable (and more beneficial) ·      Looking at who therapists choose to work with, balancing therapist self-care and self-protection with what is beneficial to the client and society What are specific concerns to consider when deciding whether a therapist is working for the benefit of the client? ·      Therapy dogs (are they certified and registered, is it in the treatment plan) ·      Contact between sessions initiated by the therapist (who is the contact for? What does the treatment model say about this type of contact?) ·      Have a thought process and document that thought process when deciding what to do as a therapist What can therapists do when clients hold distorted beliefs? ·      Identify: Do the distorted beliefs that the client holds cause (or could cause) harm? ·      Understand: What laws or ethics are relevant to whether the distorted belief should be addressed? ·      Get client consent (or not) to talk about the distorted belief and potentially change the course of therapy ·      Is it necessary to discuss the belief at this time? ·      What countertransference issues could impact the efficacy of the conversation with the client? ·      Will the conversation be helpful and potentially change the client's view? ·      How will the conversation change the course of therapy? ·      Does the therapist have appropriate expertise and training to address the distorted belief? Welcome to How to Be a Better DM!Today, we're talking about how to invite silliness and funny business to your table, and why it can help your group enjoy the entire experience. Here is the episode transcript for anyone interested:Welcome back to How to Be a Better DM, the official podcast of Monsters. Rent. I'm Justin Lewis here with my friend Tanner Weyland. Hi. Yeah, that's all I got, sorry. Yeah, good to see you all. Great to be here. Tanner and I are in rare form today. We just recorded another episode, which, which went a little bit long.So we're going to kind of do this fast mode. We're going to do a speed run, uh, but which probably means we'll just go the normal length because I'm a little bit. That's how it always goes is we're like, Oh, let's be fast. Okay. 20 minutes later. Exactly. Uh, without further ado though, let's jump in actually first a quick mention, follow us on Instagram at how to be better DM and at monsters.rent. Now let's jump in today. We're going to talk about the flip side of one of our episodes last month, which was how to add tragedy to your game. So they were talking about how to, how to add comedy to your game and in the Shakespearean. Uh, definition of the word comedy just means a happy ending, right?Everyone, like Tanner said, last time, everyone gets married. Essentially in this episode, we're going to talk specifically about making people smile, laugh, or giggle kind of that sort of comedy, the comedy that we're, we're more familiar with today. Not necessarily just a happy ending because obviously everyone wants a happy ending, but more of how to add comical moments or silly moments, or, you know, he has and gaffaws and laughs to your game. Yeah, and it's so important because I think, you know, being a DM and playing D& D is so much of it is about fun, and it's hard to separate fun from funny, right? In terms of just Practicality, right? Cause you're having more fun if you think things are funny and in, and if you're able to joke with each other and riff, and that's, you know, sometimes there's not always a place for that in every part of the game, right?Because like we mentioned last time, if you don't have tragic moments or more serious moments, then the game kind of loses some of its weight. But, but honestly, I would argue that, uh, that if you have five times the amount of comedy to tragedy. Then you're in a pretty good place because people are, are happy to come. They feel like they're in a very friendly environment and you know, but, but there's also some issues, right? Like sometimes people don't feel like, you know, maybe things are too straightforward or you feel like there's not enough room for, for growth, you know, or not growth room for like silliness. Where people are like, Oh, everyone wants to just get through the encounter. They don't want to hear me make a joke about like, Oh, I hit this guy in the knee, you know, or, you know, or trip him up because everyone wants to know if the mechanics are right for that and everything like that. Right? The people who get over serious is my main point. And I think that you can get around that by just, you know, as the DM putting your, uh, best, you know, silly foot forward and being like, Hey, not everything needs to be super serious, you know? Absolutely. Uh, you definitely need to know the tenor of the table, and maybe that's the wrong phrase. Understand What people want and when, uh, and if you listen to your characters, you'll get a good sense of when they're willing to be silly or when they're willing to be serious. My, my rule of thumb is when it's a specific, uh, plot point, it's probably going to be serious. And when I say specific plot point, I mean, like, if something happens one way or the other, the campaign has major consequences, right? The different differences in trajectory, but if it's not so, uh, serious, obviously in...

How Did This Feast Day of the Exaltation of the Most Holy Cross Come About? What Do We Really Celebrate? One of the factors that gives rise to the Feast of The Exaltation of the Most Holy Cross, . . . . . . is an event that happened 1400 years ago. At that time Persian armies moved across Europe and Asia conquering many cities including Jerusalem. It was sport to capture the Christians and kill them. The Persian king carries away from Jerusalem the remaining piece of the Cross residing in that city. The other pieces had previously been taken to Rome. The Persians took the Cross away as a sign of triumph and as a sign of their strength. Years later Jerusalem raised an army and fought the Persians, who realized they could not win without great loss. Jerusalem negotiated piece, and one of the conditions was the return of the Holy Cross. When the Cross was returned there was a triumphant procession in Jerusalem, through the streets to the same place on the hill where Jesus died. Something odd happened during this procession. To achieve mature, healthy communication, remember that feelings are never right or wrong, but it matters what we do with those feelings.• Other people are responsible for their feelings, and ultimately, the goal of communication is not to control others but to connect with them and get our mutual needs met. Understand What the Ashes Do For Us After Ash Wednesday . . . Understand the Importance of the Ashes The Gospel today, for some, is confusing. The Lord says do not pray and do not fast so others may see. Do so in private and your Heavenly Father will see. Yet on Ash Wednesday, what do we do? We place ashes on our forehead, so that everyone can see. We appear to be doing exactly the opposite to what Our Lord instructs us to do. Are we disobeying Jesus on this day? The answer is no, as explained in today's Homily. Today we gather to do something. We do more than just place ashes on our heads. The time of salvation is now. Not last week, now. What does that mean? Listen more within the Homily. Jesus tells us about how we can open our hearts. One's heart can go south if we have a bad attitude. So, what does the Lord tell us? There is always a temptation to do things that gets us noticed … gets us celebrated. The Lord tells us be careful. Humans have an inner voice that often says . . . I hope they appreciated these actions. I hope they notice it. The Lord tells us what then happens. We place ashes on our foreheads to remind us that after today, we are still going to be doing something. We will be doing it . . . regardless of whether anyone else notices it or not. Hear about what the ashes do for us. Listen to more of this Homily. Understand What the Ashes Do For Us After Ash Wednesday . . . Understand the Importance of the Ashes. Understand What the Transfiguration Should Mean for Our Own Spiritual Life In the first reading (not included within this audio) we are told without faith it is impossible to please God. This is an important statement to understand. We must understand it. If you are a believer, it is not enough to believe things about the Lord. We must be in the Lord. Faith is not just knowing details about the Lord and believing they are true. Faith is belief in a person. Moreover, faith is belief in the Lord. Hear more within the Homily. In today's Gospel from St. Mark, we hear about the Transfiguration. It is important that we understand what is happening in this event. In the days before this Gospel, and within this Gospel reading, we hear that St. Peter is there at each event. In the days before, the Lord asks His disciples, who do people say that I am? The He asks, who do you (the disciples) say I am? Finally, the Lord talks about Himself. He talks about Himself in the words of The Cross. The Lord will be rejected, He will suffer, He will die, and finally, He will rise. Peter immediately objects to this description of the Passion. Peter states this is not a good plan. The Lord corrects Peter. Furthermore, the Lord has not come to fulfill Peter's expectations, or our expectations. The Lord continues in the readings. He says, if anyone wants to come after me, let him deny himself, pick up his cross, and follow me. Jesus Shows the Disciples Where They Are Going with the Lord When They Follow Him In today's Gospel, the Lord takes Peter, James and John and tells them to follow Him to what would be the Transfiguration. The Homily talks about the significance of these three disciples. It is the moment for these three. It is not the moment for the other disciples. In our own Spiritual Life, there are times when the Lord will say come with me. Hear more about this! The Transfiguration has a message for us as well. It was not just about the Lord revealing His Glory to the three disciples. It was that, but more. When we deny ourselves, and pick up our cross and follow Him…there is a reason. The Lord will show us, from time to time, His Glory. He does so when it is the right time for us . . . spiritually. Jesus will show you where we are going when we follow Him in this manner. When He reveals to us . . . when He shows us Him, in His Glory . . . He is revealing what Heaven says about the Lord. The sequence in the Transfiguration (and before) is important. What does the world say about Me? What do you say about Me? Let Me tell you about Me! And, Let Heaven tell you about Me! The disciples are overwhelmed in seeing the Glory of the Lord. They see Moses and Elijah and Jesus. Jesus, in His Glory, allows the disciples to see scripture in a way they could not before this event. The disciples are changed. They come down from the mountain different than they were when the ascended. Understand what the Transfiguration should mean for our own Spiritual Life. Listen further to this Homily. Living In The Light - Part 4 Ephesians 5:15-20 So be careful how you live. Don't live like fools, but like those who are wise. Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days. Don't act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do. Don't be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, and making music to the Lord in your hearts. And give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Intro: Matthew 5:14 You are the light of the world-like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. Luke 11:36 If you are filled with light, with no dark corners, then your whole life will be radiant, as though a floodlight were filling you with light. Be Careful How You Live Ephesians 5:15 So be careful how you live. Don't live like fools, but like those who are wise. Philippians 2:15 ...so that no one can criticize you. Live clean, innocent lives as children of God, shining like bright lights in a world full of crooked and perverse people. Make the Most of Every Opportunity Ephesians 5:16 Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days. Colossians 4:5-6 Live wisely among those who are not believers, and make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be gracious and attractive so that you will have the right response for everyone. Understand What the Lord Wants You to Do Ephesians 5:17 Don't act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do. Ephesians 5:10 Carefully determine what pleases the Lord. Matthew 6:10-13 May your Kingdom come soon. May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us today the food we need, and forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us. And don't let us yield to temptation, but rescue us from the evil one. Be Filled With the Spirit Ephesians 5:18 Don't be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit, Acts 1:8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere-in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Keep Worshipping Ephesians 5:19 Singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, and making music to the Lord in your hearts. Hebrews 13:15 Therefore, let us offer through Jesus a continual sacrifice of praise of God, proclaiming our allegiance to his name. Give Thanks Ephesians 5:20 And give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.

Website: https://my.captivate.fm/www.mhcmortgages.co.uk (mhcmortgages.co.uk) (1:38 – 2:49) Recap Almost there! So far, we have discussed: Putting a plan in place, the importance of help from the start and where you are trying to get to. Getting yourself as presentable as possible and the small tweaks that can make a difference Going out and viewing properties and getting accepted for a mortgage. Starting to organise the mortgage and the legal work that will be involved. How there will be a lull in place as everything gets underway, which is where we can organise your protection. And now we are very close to completion and you picking up your keys.   (2:50 – 11:27) Preparation But before this last step happens, I'd like to talk about a few things to prepare yourself for exchange that you may not have considered, purely because you haven't bought property before. Visit the property as many times as you need to. There's no limit and it's a really good idea to just go back and check again to see what it's like. Measure up the property, so when you are putting in furniture you know it will actually fit. Furthermore, understand what is going to stay and what is going to go. Your solicitor and the seller's will be liaising with each other to know this – but you should too. A great thing to do to help with this is to get to know the seller, perhaps even exchange personal details so you can quickly communicate if need be.  Make a list of addresses to change for things like: Bank Car insurance & finance Driving licence Credit cards Loans Work Things will get more hectic as you move on so this is something you should do earlier. You may miss a few, which is natural, but get the main ones like your bank. An idea is to have a spreadsheet where you can quickly update them and it would be safer than a sheet of paper with them all on. As you change address, think about the Royal Mail Redirect service, which will be able to forward your mail to the new address. This only costs a few pounds a month. It's likely you'll already have a monthly budget. If you have, go through it again and ensure you covered everything. Have it all broken down and clear to you. If you don't have exact figures for utilities (electricity, gas, water), you should have a rough estimate. In terms of ordering furniture, make sure this is all arranged around your moving in date. It can take months for some furniture to arrive from the point of ordering so bear this in mind. But just remember: not everything has to be brand new. When moving your own furniture, make sure to plan how you're going to do it. If you haven't got much you may only need a van. Think about if there are any friends that can help you move things...

74. How to Build a Highly Profitable Product

Monetization Nation Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 19, 2021 25:24

One of the most important factors of monetization is creating a great product that people would want to buy. However, the process of creating and developing a new product can be very daunting. In fact, more than 30,000 new products are launched each year and 95% of them fail (Source: Harvard Business School). Moreover, only 40% of developed products make it to market and of that 40%, only 60% will have any success at all. (Source: Marketing Research Association). That's why I have Bob Healey with me today. Bob is the founder and CEO of GrillBlazer, which makes a line of products called GrillGuns. Bob has worked as a consultant, helping different organizations with their products, processes, and business development.  Bob is an engineer who loves to find the root cause of any problem and come up with creative solutions. Today, Bob and I discuss how he started GrillBlazer, and Bob explains his process and secrets concerning product creation and product development. Looking at the Big Picture Bob believes that the reason he is who he is today, an engineer and a businessman, is his ability to see the finish line faster than anybody else, even when he doesn't know what he wants to do. It's like when he used to flip houses when he was younger. He would see the potential of a house well before he remodeled it to match the picture he had in his head.  Bob doesn't think it matters whether or not we're working on something we've done before. Even if it's something we're doing for the first time, we should be able to see what the end looks like. Do We Have What it Takes? Bob says that a lot of people have crazy and great ideas, but most of them don't understand what it takes to make those ideas come true. His advice is that whenever we want to accomplish something, we need to know if we have the necessary resources to make it happen.   “Success is not for those who want it, nor those who need it, but for those who are utterly determined to seize it一whatever it takes.” (Source: Darren Hardy, New York Times best-selling author) As an engineer, Bob used to design a lot of products for other companies. Part of what he did was to improve the performance of these companies' processes or products. He had worked for American Electric Power as a contractor. For 6 years, Bob worked for AEP managing contracts and negotiations until the company, looking to cut down costs, decided to let go of all their contractors. Bob found himself stuck between two options: either work for AEP full-time or find something else to do. Since he didn't want to work for the company anymore, he decided to leave.  After Bob told his wife he was no longer working for AEP, they spent a few days making a list of the things he wanted to do. Bob started by prioritizing what he believed was important. He also gave himself the freedom to add to his list whenever he came up with something new. He needed to find out whether or not its priority took precedence over what he was currently working on. Knowing When NOT to Proceed For a whole year, Bob worked on two products prior to GrillBlazer. He had finished the development of both products when he was trying to figure out what was required to be successful in launching these products as businesses. One of the two products was in a very mature multi-billion dollar industry. Bob took time to understand how he would enter that market, what it would cost him, whether or not this business would bring him personal stratification, and what the end result would look like.  After Bob had thought about all these factors, he realized that this wasn't where he wanted to end up. Bob believes that it takes discipline to stop working on what doesn't bring us closer to where we want to be. Having enough discipline, Bob decided not to proceed with launching the product. How GrillGlazer Started Bob and his family enjoyed having barbecues. It didn't matter what time of the year it was, they would just have people over and charcoal grill a meal. It was during one of those barbecues, in December 2017, that Bob realized not a lot of people liked to charcoal grill when the snow was blowing. It was too much effort to try to light the grill.  Bob realized that his way of lighting the grill was much easier and it worked all year round. While he was standing out in the cold, taking steaks off the grill, he found his next project.  He started discussing his idea with his family. He knew what he wanted to do and what the end product should be, but he just didn't know how to do it yet. Although his way of lighting a charcoal grill was efficient, it was complicated and unattractive. So, one of his sons-in-law suggested he make the product look like a gun because people would think it was cool.  It turned out to be great advice. Bob recalls one of his earlier conversations with an attorney, who he was considering as his legal counsel and who was really excited about Bob's product. Bob asked him if the product had a different design, would he have still bought it? The answer was no. Bob realized that the gun shape made his product look cool, and it was one of the primary reasons why people bought it. Understand What the Market Wants Bobs says that it's essential to figure out and understand what the market wants. Had he not considered what people wanted before he developed his product, he would have ended up with a product that no one wanted to buy. He would have spent all his energy and time trying to convince people that they needed to buy his product. Instead, he just designed a product that people found cool and inclined to buy.  “Don't find customers for your products, find products for your customers.” - Seth Godin How to Come up with a Highly Profitable Product When I asked Bob to share with us his top strategies to develop a profitable product, he said starting a business from scratch is a complex process. We have to take into consideration all of the aspects of how to design something people will want and then create, manufacture and finance it. Bob advises that we start by asking ourselves: “How are we going to make it happen?” It's not enough to think that just because we have a great idea, someone else will want to do the work for us.  When Bob was in the process of creating GrillBlazer, he knew because of his experience whenever he would face an obstacle, he would find the resources needed to overcome it. Bob believes we must fully understand the tremendous amount of work involved in this process. Because if we're not willing to go the distance, we're not going to make it. Bob also stresses how important it is to ask ourselves if we have what it takes to make our products happen, without having to rely on someone else to do it for us.  Creating Credibility  Bob mentions how important it is to create credibility so that people can trust us. He tells us how he was able to raise $560,000 by running a Kickstarter fundraising campaign. Although some people doubted if his product was going to sell, by going on to sell $2M worth of products in just the first year of launching, Bob proved how successful his product was.  Key Takeaways Thank you so much Bob for sharing your stories and knowledge with us today. Here are some of my key takeaways from this episode: The most successful people have the ability to look at the big picture. They see what the end looks like.  It's not enough to have a great idea. It's equally important to understand if we have what it takes to get this idea to the finish line. It takes as much discipline to know when to stop just as it takes to proceed.  If we don't reach beyond our skillset and find people who will augment what we know, we'll be stuck where we are. Before we put time and effort into developing a product, we must ask ourselves if we have what it takes for our product to be successful.  Connect with Bob Healey If you enjoyed this interview and want to connect with Bob, you can find him on LinkedIn at www.linkedin.com/in/bob-healey-8bbb00b or visit GrillBlazer website https://grillblazer.com.  Want to be a Better Digital Monetizer? Understand What's Going On?   Luke 9:18-20 New International Version (NIV) Peter Declares That Jesus Is the Messiah 18 Once when Jesus was praying in private and his disciples were with him, he asked them, “Who do the crowds say I am?” 19 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, that one of the prophets of long ago has come back to life.” 20 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” Peter answered, “God’s Messiah.”   Luke 9:22-25 New International Version (NIV) 22 And he said, “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.” 23 Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. 24 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it. 25 What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit their very self?   Luke 9:28-36 New International Version (NIV) The Transfiguration 28 About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James with him and went up onto a mountain to pray. 29 As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning. 30 Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. 31 They spoke about his departure, which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem. 32 Peter and his companions were very sleepy, but when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. 33 As the men were leaving Jesus, Peter said to him, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” (He did not know what he was saying.) 34 While he was speaking, a cloud appeared and covered them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. 35 A voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him.” 36 When the voice had spoken, they found that Jesus was alone. The disciples kept this to themselves and did not tell anyone at that time what they had seen.

Mark Goblowsky is an air force veteran, career martial artist, podcaster, author, and entrepreneur. He is on a mission to help others overcome the obstacles in their life based on his own experiences. Favorite Success Quote “Most people overestimate what they can do in one year and underestimate what they can do in ten years” ~Bill Gates Key Points 1. Practice Your “Kung Fu” The martial art kung fu literally translates into two words. Effort and time. And the only things that are standing between you and your goals are these two factors. If you can become a master of Kung Fu, a master at putting in the effort over time, you will succeed. We all want to achieve great things, we all want a great life. We want the business, the relationships, and the body. And you can have it! You can have it all. But you must be willing to approach life through the lens of Kung Fu. Put in the effort, be patient with the time, and you will succeed. Because at the end of the day, time is going to pass whether you are doing what you love and pursuing your goals or not. So stop worrying about the outcome and get busy doing what you need to do to create the life that you want to live. If you are willing to be patient, to stick through it when times are tough, and to trudge forward even in the face of adversity, at the end of the day, you will be successful. No one who was truly committed to their craft, dream, or ambition for more than a decade fails. You will have failures along the way, yes. But at the end of the day, when it’s all said and done if you are willing to keep doing the work year in and year out especially when it’s hard, you will succeed. 2. If You Aren’t Happy on the Journey You Won’t Be Happy at the Destination There is a pervasive myth in society that “One day” we will be happy. We believe that when we finally have the six pack, the 7-figure company, the beautiful girlfriend, the house on the beach or the sports car then we will be happy. But the truth is that happiness can be experienced right here and now. And not only can it be experienced now, it must be experienced now. Because if you are not happy on the journey, you will rarely find happiness at the destination. If you cannot learn to be happy while you are building your business, you will not be happy when you sell it for $10 million. If you cannot learn to be happy while you are training your body and building your physique, you will not be happy when you finally attain the look you’ve been longing for. If you cannot allow yourself to be happy while you work to find the woman of your dreams, no relationship will ultimately satisfy you. Happiness is a choice, and if you aren’t choosing to be happy along the journey, you will arrive at the destination and wonder “Is this it?” 3. Resistance Gives You Strength  Most of you reading this want to become stronger. In all areas of your life. But what most of you don’t realize is that strength doesn’t come from ease. If you go to the gym every single day of your life from now until you die and all you do is push against the air, you will never get stronger, you will never build a strong body, and you will never force your muscles to grow. To become stronger, you must push against resistance, you must struggle, you must sweat, and you must bleed. And this doesn’t just apply to the gym. If you want your relationship to be stronger, you will have to face resistance. You cannot have a thriving marriage and never face adversity together. Because it is in times of struggle when love is truly born. It’s only when your marriage is facing resistance in some form or another that it is strengthened. In your business, you will never achieve success if you stay in your comfort zone and never face resistance. Success in business mandates failures. It mandates struggles and resistance that force you to grow, adapt, and evolve with the times. So embrace resistance, for it gives you strength. 4. Understand What is Truly Important  When Mark’s son was a young boy, he and his mother were in a terrible hit and run car accident with a semi-truck. His son suffered from a traumatic brain injury and now suffers from disabilities that will affect the rest of his life. When he got the call that his son was in a coma, how do you think Mark responded? Did he say “Gee, that really sucks… But I’ve got to finish up this project at work” Or “Wow! I will be there later, but I just really need to close this client… They’re worth a lot of money.” Hell no! He dropped everything in his life and was by his son’s side 24/7 for four months. Nothing, not his business, not his finances, not even his health got in between him and his child. And it is in times of severe duress that we realize what is truly important. Most of us spend our lives chasing external validation that is ultimately pointless instead of spending time on what really matters… The people that we love. Yes, you should want to be successful. Yes, you should want to be healthy, wealthy, and wise. But what’s the point if the people you love aren’t there to share it with you. Understand the importance of family, friends, and love and make that your focus in life. Everything else is dust in the wind. 5. When Hope Disappears, So Does Action You must always keep hope, no matter how grim the circumstance. And by hope, I don’t mean positive thinking. Hope is a powerful acronym that you must remember when life becomes hard. Here and now. Opportunity Perseverance Enthusiasm If you wish to keep moving forward and succeeding in life, you must live in the here and the now, you must always look for opportunities in adversity, you must push through adversity, and maintain a constant enthusiasm for success. When you lose hope, you lose the ability to take action. And when you stop taking action… You wither away and die. Never lose hope.
