McComas Taylor is a professor of Sanskrit at the Australian National University. As a life-long learner of languages, he's had previous careers in publishing, Chinese and Tibetan studies, and Ornithology (the studying of birds). He's the author of many books ranging from a dictionary of ridiculous words, to a guide to birds of the Australian Capital Territory, to serious Indological academic texts. I first met McComas when he answered the front door. His son and my high school friend Patrick, had invited our group of friends over for a spaghetti dinner. I was 16 at the time, and little did I know that McComas wasn't a regular Dad… he was a cool Dad. McComas was one of the first names that came to mind when I was putting a guest list together. After years of hearing him speak passionately on everything from veggie gardens to Sanskrit literature, I knew he'd have something to say about creativity. He shared how he makes learning an ancient and complex language engaging and memorable, and he also challenged my belief that I wasn't good at languages. I couldn't stop smiling the whole way through this interview, and I really hope you enjoy it as much as I did. ------ Connect with us: -- www.instagram.com/trishjohnstone www.instagram.com/oathandstonedesigns -- www.oathandstone.com.au

Did you know that approximately 1 in 5 adults in the United States experiences mental illness in a given year? That's a staggering 46.6 million people.National Institute of Mental Health, "Mental Illness." NIMH, website. What if you could significantly lower your risk of being part of that statistic with something as simple as building and maintaining muscle? A growing body of evidence suggests that strong muscles are vital for physical health and equally important for a healthy mind. Building muscle makes you feel happier, more focused, and less stressed. This article will uncover the science and physiology behind the fascinating and often overlooked connection between muscle health and mental health. Grab a protein shake, and let's dive into one of the most underappreciated aspects of holistic health: the muscle-mental health connection. The Biology of Muscles: A Brief Overview Muscles are biological machines—crafted from bundles of fibers, fueled by the foods you eat, and controlled by the impulses of your nervous system. But don't mistake them as mere pulleys that help you lift, push, or pull. Muscles are complex structures with roles that go far beyond everyday movement. Muscles are made up of specialized cells known as muscle fibers. These fibers are bundled in fascicles, which are then grouped together to form the muscle tissue you can see and feel. Each fiber is a powerhouse in itself, packed with tiny protein filaments that contract and expand to create movement.MacIntosh, B. R., Gardiner, P. F., & McComas, A. J. (2006). Skeletal Muscle: Form and Function. Human Kinetics. Functions Beyond Movement Apart from aiding in movement, muscles serve other critical functions. They act as metabolic factories, helping to regulate blood sugar levels. They store essential nutrients like glycogen for quick energy. Some muscles even produce hormones that communicate with other parts of the body. For example, myokines are compounds released by muscles during exercise, which have various beneficial effects on the body, including anti-inflammatory properties.Pedersen, B. K., & Febbraio, M. A. (2008). Muscle as an endocrine organ: Focus on muscle-derived interleukin-6. Physiological Reviews, 88(4), 1379-1406. Understanding this multifaceted role of muscles sets the stage for grasping their influence on mental health. It's not just about being able to bench press your body weight or sprint faster; it's about the symbiotic relationship between muscle health and your brain. Muscles, Neurotransmitters, and Hormones: A Partnership You've probably heard the phrase "endorphins make you happy." While it's a catchy saying, the truth is far more complex and captivating. Muscles, when exercised, do far more than release endorphins. They kick-start a biochemical cascade that influences various hormones and neurotransmitters, ultimately playing a crucial role in your mental state. Exercise and Neurotransmitter Production When you engage in physical activity, especially strength training, your muscles work hard, and in response, your body releases a medley of chemical compounds. Apart from endorphins, which serve as natural painkillers and mood elevators, other neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin get a boost.Chaouloff, F. (1989). Physical exercise and brain monoamines: A review. Acta Physiologica Scandinavica, 137(1), 1-13. They regulate mood, help with focus, and are instrumental in feeling pleasure. Dopamine is often associated with pleasure and reward, making you feel good when you achieve a goal, like hitting a new PR (personal record). Conversely, serotonin is crucial for mood regulation and has a calming, anxiety-reducing effect. A balance between these hormones is essential for mental well-being. What's fascinating is how muscle activity, especially resistance training, has been shown to improve neurotransmitter balance in a way that enhances mental health.Strickland, J. C., & Smith, M. A.

This week we are reviewing "Ritual in Death"! This book is a novella that was originally part of the "Suite 606" anthology which included novellas by J.D. Robb, Mary Blayney, Ruth Ryan Lanagan and Mary Kay McComas. Though we've had several novellas before and after this one, the one thing that makes this one a bit weird is that they decided to take one of the novellas, "Wayward Wizard" by McComas, and put those characters into one scene in each of the other novellas. So, if you were someone who read this book and remember thinking the scene where Eve takes a nap in her office and wakes up to a man, a woman and a boy beaming into her office then beaming back out again, that's what that was. Other than that, this is a typical J.D. Robb novella. Short and to the point. The case is interesting, but gets solved really quickly. This is not a novella that rates high for any of us, but it's not a bad story overall. Some really nice moments in this book. We get to see Isis again, and she has some great lines. We get to meet Maxia Carlyle and we all love her and wish she would have made another appearance in another book. The scene between her and Eve is just gold. Roarke is going through it in this book because the murder takes place at his hotel and the Murderer(s) take advantage of his people to do it. Eve is going through it because...well...she always does, and because Roarke is. But do you know what makes Roarke feel a bit better? Inappropriate Workplace Shower Sex at Cop Central! Doesn't last for long though because they are back bitching at each other soon after, Isis tells them they need a nap, and she's not wrong. Eve and Roarke do make up though, and shortly thereafter, Eve takes down the murdering Satanic Cult, and all is once again well in Eve and Roarke Land.

Hey friend! Thanks for joining me for another episode of the Empower Her Co Podcast. I'm grateful that you're here and excited to share today's guest. If this episode seems like a chat between friends, you'd be right. I'm grateful to have Kyla as a respected friend. I always learn so much from her whenever we get together. She's full of knowledge and I appreciate her vulnerability in sharing today. Key Takeaways Kyla is from a small town in Wisconsin and studied Hotel, Restaurant, and Tourism Management. She spent years on the east coast before returning to Iowa to start a business. Kyla opened an event space at the start of the Pandemic and it made her reevaluate her priorities. She realized the toll it was taking on her physically and mentally. She felt like a bad mom and wife. The people she interacted with at work got to see an outgoing, bubbly personality, but it left nothing for her family. Kyla still loves event planning, but now focuses on health coaching. She loves to help others achieve their goals while being able to travel and spend time with family. Kyla works hard to lead a life she finds fulfilling and feels she is a more present family member as a result. She is committed to keeping daily habits that support her long term goals. Daily habits Kyla swears by include waking up before her children and using that time to focus on self improvement with reading, journaling, and meditating. She always incorporates some sort of movement into her day and avoids screens an hour before bed. Kyla reminds us she didn't make changes all at once: She started waking up an hour before her family just ten minutes at a time. Big changes add up! Kyla has read 35 books so far this year! She recommends (and I agree) Your Best Yes by Lisa TerKeurst. Favorite podcasters include Mel Robbins, John Maxwell, and Doug Wood. Connect with Kyla Kyla offers health coaching through Instagram (goodhealthwith.kylamccomas) and Facebook (kyla.mccomas).
