Next Tuesday, April 7 is the Spring Election in Wisconsin. On today's show, host Ali Muldrow is in conversation with two local election officials: Madison City Clerk, Lydia McComas, and Dane County Clerk, Scott McDonell. They talk about absentee and early voting, voter turnout, and the vicious environment around elections created by the Trump administration. McDonell says that Madison is the gold standard for early voting in the state. That's because the city has made early voting available at libraries even at night and on the weekends. He says that this measure has increased voting by 3-4%, especially engaging the casual voters out there. He's noticed an increase in-person early voting this year, closer to pre-pandemic levels. McComas discusses the quick turnaround between the Spring Primary in February and the Spring Election in April and all the work that her office does to make this quick transition seamless. She says that no matter how you cast your ballot, it will be counted in Madison and that she's working to rebuild trust after 193 ballots went uncounted in 2024.  They reassure listeners that our local elections are safe and secure, despite the erosion of trust in voting that the Trump administration has fostered. And they talk about efforts to help students engaged in voting, how they have been threatened at their jobs, increasing access to voting for the elderly and eligible voters in Dane County jails, and the importance of showing gratitude to poll workers. She graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in political science. She holds a graduate certificate in election administration from the Humphrey School of Public Affairs. Her previous role was as Voter Engagement Division Manager with Hennepin County in Minnesota. Scott McDonell has served as the Dane County Clerk since he was first elected in 2013. In 2014, McDonell became the first clerk in Wisconsin to issue a same-sex marriage license, and he is the only clerk in the country to oversee two presidential recounts in 2016 and 2020. You've no doubt seen Tom McComas flash across the big screen, usually falling off a building or wheelying a motorcycle through rush-hour traffic. That's because he's a bonafide Hollywood stuntman. McComas credits his career choice to a best-selling self-help book, “What Color is Your Parachute?” Summing it up, he says, “Figure out what you like to do, and find out a way to get paid doing it.” McComas discovered his first love, motorcycling, growing up in Chicago. Bitten by the competition bug, he road raced for six years before discovering he could get paid to crash bikes. “I thought, ‘I'm not afraid to fall down. I like to fight. Let's go!'” His big break? Doubling actor David Hasselhoff on the popular 1990s television series “Baywatch.” McComas has since chalked up hundreds of appearances in film and on TV. “Getting into stunts was so difficult,” he says in reflection. “There's a lot of rejection. I'm really grateful to be in the position I'm in, because I don't go to work, I go to  play . WORT 89.9FM Madison · New Madison City Clerk Has Hands Full with Election Prep Lydia McComas, Madison's new City Clerk has only been on the job for seven months, but she already has her hands full.  McComas' predecessor, Maribeth Witzel-Behl, resigned in April of 2025 amid investigations into 193 misplaced and uncounted absentee ballots in the November, 2024 elections.  Since then, Witzel-Behl and the City of Madison, in response to a lawsuit by disenfranchised voters, have made the novel argument that absentee voting is a privilege, not a right.  Meanwhile, on February 12, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility or SAVE Act, which, if approved by the U.S. Senate, would require proof of U.S. citizenship before registering to vote.  To top it all off, President Trump has spoken of trying to nationalize the election process in states like Wisconsin and has threatened to send Department of Homeland Security agents to the polls, allegedly to conduct sweeps for undocumented immigrants.  So, with all that background, we thought we'd check in with Lydia McComas, and see how the city's getting ready for what promises to be a rollercoaster of an election season.  Lydia McComas spoke with Monday Buzz host Brian Standing on February 16, 2026. Our Solar System is wrapped in a vast, invisible bubble created by the Sun, a protective region that shields Earth and the planets from much of the radiation that fills our galaxy. But until recently, scientists have only had rough sketches of what this boundary looks like and how it behaves. In this episode of Planetary Radio, host Sarah Al-Ahmed is joined by David McComas, professor of astrophysical sciences at Princeton University and principal investigator of NASA’s Interstellar Mapping and Acceleration Probe (IMAP) and Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) missions, along with Matina Gkioulidou, a heliophysicist at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, former IMAP-Ultra instrument lead, and current IMAP project scientist and co-investigator. Now stationed at the Sun–Earth L1 Lagrange point, IMAP uses 10 instruments to study the heliosphere — the region where the solar wind collides with material from interstellar space. The mission does this by tracking energetic neutral atoms, particles that travel in straight lines from distant regions of the heliosphere, allowing scientists to map areas of space that spacecraft can’t directly sample. McComas and Gkioulidou explain how IMAP builds on the legacy of Interstellar Boundary Explorer, what makes this mission different, and why understanding the Sun’s influence across space matters not just for fundamental science, but for space-weather forecasting and protecting technology and astronauts closer to home.
