Jak to máme my? Havrani mu ráno i večer nosili chléb a maso a z potoka pil. Tehdy dostal slovo Hospodinovo: „Vstaň, jdi do Sarepty Sidonské a zůstaň tam. Hle, přikázal jsem jedné tamější vdově, aby tě živila.“ Vstal tedy a vydal se do Sarepty. Přišel k městské bráně a hle, jakási vdova tam právě sbírala dříví. Nasbírám teď trochu dříví a půjdu to připravit sobě a synovi. Sníme to a umřeme.“ „Neboj se,“ řekl jí Eliáš. „Jdi, udělej, cos řekla, ale nejdřív mi z toho připrav chlebovou placku a dones mi ji. Potom připravíš jídlo sobě a synovi. „To jsi mi přišel připomenout můj hřích a zabít mi syna?“ „Podej mi svého syna,“ řekl jí. Do chlapce se vrátila duše, a on ožil. Eliáš ho vzal, snesl ho z horní místnosti dolů do domu a předal ho matce. „Podívej se, tvůj syn žije,“ řekl jí. „Teď vím, že jsi Boží muž,“ odpověděla žena Eliášovi. „Opravdu máš v ústech slovo Hospodinovo!“ '

Paying For College

It is a proud moment in any parent’s lives when their child is accepted to college. The moment our son received his acceptance letter to his first choice will never be forgotten. You get to check off another accomplishment proving that you did ok as parents. Soon after the hugs and fist bumps were done the realization of the high price tag ahead got us thinking, “how are we going to pay for this?” Back when our kids were born 529 college savings accounts were new. While they sounded like a great idea, plenty of us had questions about how they would work when our kids needed them. The web was brand new and so were these programs so there was not much to go on besides trust. Looking back with what we know now, we wish we had set aside something every week so that we never noticed that it was gone. It would have been slowly growing over the years and right now things would be easier. I’m no financial expert, but my advice to you right now if you have kids of any age is to set up a college savings account. My friends at MEFA have tons of information on planning and saving for college. We are now at the point where we are investigating our options to pay for college. Thankfully there are many different loans, scholarship and financial aid options out there. Filling out our FAFSA application wasn’t the nightmare we had been warned it would be. We file our taxes electronically so it was only a few clicks to import all of our information. Every parent with a child going to college should fill this out as it is the only way to be considered for financial aid from most colleges. We can’t go back and be smarter about this, but by sharing our story I hope it’ll help someone out there do better with their plans. Family Fun at Revere Beach Sand Sculpting Festival

The beach is the last place I personally go for family fun during the summer. Sure, the ocean is beautiful and there is always endless people watching at the beach, but sitting on a blanket, melting in the sun is not my idea of a fun day. So, when I partnered up again this summer with Fidelity and MEFA to cover one of their UFund Dream Tour stops I’m not sure why I chose the Revere Beach International Sand Sculpting Festival. I mentioned to our neighbors that we’d be going to this and they asked if they could come along. When I told them why I was going she chimed in, “Oh I love MEFA. I use to listen to their webinars during my lunch breaks to learn about how to pay for my son’s college. Plus, whenever I have a question they answered me.” That is a true and unpaid for statement. I had to include it because I think it sums up the experience a lot of people have had when interacting with these organizations. We arrived joking that none of us had been to Revere Beach in over twenty years so we didn’t know what to expect. The beach and the surrounding area sure have been developed and improved over the years. It was the perfect location to showcase the mind boggling creativity and artistry of what someone can do with a pile of sand. Nothing I’ve ever made out of sand at at the beach has come close to what was on display. The variety in topics and themes on display covered everything from the abstract to the absurd. There was political commentary and issue awareness mixed in with pure imagination. The official sculpture of the festival focused on the evolution of technology and I loved that in addition to being a beautiful sculpture that they worked technology directly into it. As you can see on the phone in this photo they were showing real time updates of photos people were posting to Instagram. It took the idea of sand art to a whole new level. Among all the vendors taking part in the fun, was the bright blue big top covered in sheep and clouds. This of course was the U.Fund Dreams Tour tent. Kids and adults alike were having fun and learning about saving for college at the same time from the always smiling staff. They still have several events that they will be at this summer, so check their events calendar to find one near you. A Savings Memory From My Youth Has Me Thinking About Saving Today

Saving is something I’ve never been that great at. When you don’t have much more than what will pay the bills, the idea of saving is great, but it isn’t a reality. The older you grow, the more you realize that putting away even a little bit does help. I think we get lost in thinking we have to have a massive nut of money squirreled away in order to be considered a savings. Growing up in small town New Hampshire, I remember the local bank did something they called “The Christmas Club” every fall. You could open up a special account that people were encouraged to use to put aside and save money for their holiday shopping. The way I remember it, you couldn’t do any withdrawals until December. My parents got me one and it was fun to put in a few dollars here and there. Going to the bank and getting my little passbook updated with the latest deposit and total amounts was a big deal. I seem to recall little tickets too that encouraged you to set aside a set amount every week so that you would have a set amount of $500, $1000 or more saved by Christmas. Of course I wasn’t on one of these plans, but breaking it down like that it is amazing how much little deposits can add up to. Savings is all about putting a little away on a regular basis. That is the key. The Christmas Club growing up first exposed me to this. Later, when we had our children and set up college accounts for them it once again reminded me. Now that we are less than a year away from receiving our first college bills for our son, the idea that we haven’t saved enough is a reality. Few people save enough for college, but I wish I was more educated on the options when our children were young so that we could have done a better job. Thankfully, these days there is lots of information on saving for college and I’m happy to be partnering again with Fidelity & MEFA in support of the U.Fund Dreams Tour. This series of events around Massachusetts are intended to educate parents (and any adults thinking about becoming parents) about the importance and options of saving for college. Stay tuned to see where it takes me and if you have any college savings tips, I’d love to hear them. Disclosure: I have partnered with Fidelity & MEFA in support of the U.Fund Dreams Tour.
