S3 Trailer: Fine Line Mental Health-Mental Illness
May is Mental Health Awareness Month and we are here to talk about it. Mental health, mental illness, and burnout are the hot topics of the day. Before that, we share our “behind the scenes” stories about our first time on live television. Once we got in the studio, we were totally fine, but before that…it was a different story. One of us shaved off half an eyebrow and the other nearly lost a shoe in a sewer grate. We started this podcast over two years ago and somehow never discussed the difference between mental health and mental illness. As Unqualified Therapists, we dive in with our Google research and own opinions on how these two differ. When our mental health is in a not so good place, it is most often due to burnout, which is most often caused by our work environments. We will discuss the stages of burnout and share some ways to heal from it. We hope you enjoy this real, honest, serious, and at the same time silly conversation with your Unqualified Therapists. Xo, Amy & Sarah We want to keep on keeping on with our mental health awareness mission and to do that, we need to grow our Patreon community so that we can continue to put out the Unqualified Therapists podcast. YOU can help us keep the mics on and join our community for as little as $5. Your support means the world to us as we continue to stop the stigma surrounding mental health and mental illness. Catch da Flava on Mental Health & Mental Illness By Meredith Charko - December 05, 2018 On Tuesday, November 27th, Radio Regent's Catch da Flava youth radio show explored the topic of mental health and mental illness. We were fortunate enough to have guest Mike Stroh from mental health organization Starts With Me on the show with us as a guest. Mike answered a number of great questions from the youth and had some important and thought-provoking discussions with us about mental health and mental illness. For more information about Mike's work and Starts With Me, visit https://startswithme.ca/ We started off the show the way we usually do when we are introducing the topic or issue for the day's episode, which is to provide a definition or general explanation of the main concept. Mike made the important distinction between the terms "mental health" and "mental illness" for us and our listeners. The youth started the discussion off by asking Mike to talk about some of the most common forms of mental illness, especially for youth in particular. He explained that anxiety and depression tend to be the most common, and then we talked about what kinds of symptoms and experiences people who suffer from these and related conditions go through. The youth also asked Mike to explain the difference between situational mental health issues, and clinical disorders such as clinical depression and anxiety disorders. We also discussed whether mental illness can be hereditary, that is, passed down through parents and family generations. The youth also wanted to talk with Mike about the stigma that exists in society around mental illness, and some personal experiences with being discriminated against due to mental health issues. With this topic, we also discussed some of the lesser known mental health issues and mental illnesses aside from anxiety and depression (which most people are relatively familiar with). Along with that discussion, we talked about the added stigma that exists around mental health issues and mental illnesses that aren't discussed as openly, and therefore aren't understood in the same way as more common conditions like anxiety and depression. We also talked about the complicated issue of medication and the process of finding the right kind of medication for mental illness, as the process and results can and do differ from person to person, and not everyone even chooses to medicate in the traditional sense. In connection with that discussion, we also talked about some alternative and more natural medication options, such as cannabis. Mike importantly pointed out for us that no matter the method or specific medication, the results and process of starting medication can be different for everyone. We closed out the episode by asking Mike to provide some recommendations for us and for listeners of mental health resources in Toronto. One great recommendation that Mike mentioned for youth specifically is the What's Up Walk-In Clinic, which provides immediate walk-in mental health support and counselling without a referral, appointment, or even a health card required. "Humanizing Psychiatrists - Toward A Humane Psychiatry" is Dr. Niall McLaren's latest book. It is his third book and a follow up to the first two, "Humanizing Madness" and "Humanizing Psychiatry". Dr. McLaren is a psychiatrist from Australia who is on his own crusade to educate people about what he calls, "psychiatry unleashed" in reference to biopsychiatry - the Pharma-motivated pseudo-science of mental illness as a "brain disorder". Does psychiatry have a future? Dr. McLaren describes his work this way on his YouTube Channel:"I write philosophical papers on the status of psychiatry and have now published three books which summarise my work. These show that modern psychiatry does not have a rational basis and therefore fails as a science. It is the only medical specialty that doesn't have a rational model of the nature of the disorders it treats. I've also shown how a proper model of mental disorder should be assembled, starting with a partial resolution of the mind-body problem. This leads to a rational model of mental disorder, and thence to forms of treatment. My work shows that biological psychiatry is not scientific and never can be. This includes modern drug management, the emphasis on the physical and chemical state of the brain, as well as the entire system of classification of mental disorders in DSM-IV and will soon appear in DSM-5. Strangely enough, my colleagues don't like being told they are not practicing a scientific form of psychiatry. I don't understand that. Science progresses by criticising the prevailing model, but orthodox psychiatry does its best to suppress critical work."Visit psychewhisperer.com for a direct link to his youtube channel and website and to purchase his books as well.
