Depression has its way of convincing you that there is no way out of the darkness you are in. Tracey Maxfield was able to overcome that, escaping the rabbit hole of depression and, now, helping others do the same. She joins Patrick Veroneau to share with us her journey of coming out of that in this honest, raw, and hopeful episode. Bringing her book, Escaping the Rabbit Hole: My Journey Through Depression, Tracey talks about what it was like experiencing an acute depressive episode, how she battled through it, and recognized that there is hope. She shows others that there will always be a way out, even when it feels like all hope is gone. This conversation is particularly for those who have struggled and are struggling with difficult moments in their lives. Allow Tracey to remind you that tomorrow could be better. Join her as she shares the kind of mindset we need to have, as well as how we can impart that to our children as they grow up and face the realities of the world. Love the show? A great year because of you! SUMMARY KEYWORDS interview, season, episode, sat, jacqueline, tracey, spoke, podcast, ransomware, book, highly, dustin, dead, life, recommend, greg, america, differences, adversity, history SPEAKERS Ed Watters Ed Watters 00:03 Well, here it is. The final episode of Dead America for season four, and the year 2020, which I know a lot of us are happy to see, disappear into history. A lot has happened in the year 2020. And if I could sum it all up in one word, it would be unprecedented. Let's not waste any more time and get into this final episode of Season Four. Ed Watters 00:52 To overcome, you must educate. Educate not only yourself, but educate anyone seeking to learn. We are all Dead America. We can all learn something. To learn. We must challenge what we already understand. The way we do that is through conversation. Sometimes we have conversations with others. However, some of the best conversations happen with ourselves. Reach Out and challenge yourself. Let's dive in and learn something right now. The year 2020 sure has been a whirlwind for a lot of people. It has brought so much uncertainty, along with so many unfamiliar things that most of us have never encountered before. Despite the heavy losses, the heavy differences and just the unbalance in our norm. It's always good to take a look back to see how far you've actually come. And through all of the negative that happened in 2020. We can see there has been positive in our life. Dead America podcast has been struggling for some time to get a foothold in 2020. I think we got our foothold. I really think we found our groove. And we really found our direction. In total. This year, we've done 35 episodes, including this one. 16 of those episodes, were fabulous interviews with some remarkable people that we will be covering in this episode. We saw tremendous growth in 2020 our biggest growth area, it was India, that was very impressive to us. We want to say thank you to India, for that impressive growth in our listenership in India. We also saw a wide variety of listenership growth throughout the world. It's very humbling. And we want to say thank you to the listeners also to the guests that appeared on the Dead America podcast. Without you guys, there isn't a podcast, and we recognize that. When 2020 started for us on the Dead America podcast, we were still presenting you with season two. With the first 11 episodes, we were covering history and historical figures. I highly recommend you take the time and listen to each and every one of those episodes. They have a meaning and a message behind them. The first interview of 2020 was with Andy Hoosier from the Voice of Reason. Me and Andy sat down for an hour, and we spoke about the differences between radio and podcasting. We learned quite a bit in this episode from Andy about the regulations involved in radio, and why it is so difficult for radio to be able to just get their message straight out to us. And the benefits of you having a podcast, which seems to be the best form of free speech that we have available to us. Our second interview of 2020 was with Tracey Maxfield. Tracey is a returning guest on the Dead America podcast. And we sat down with Tracey and discussed her new podcast along with the new course that Tracey put out to help people in their growth. It's always exciting when we sit down with Tracey Maxfield. Ed Watters 06:15 Our next interview came June 10th with Julia Kristina, it was a delight talking with Julia. We sat down and talked about boundaries, it's so important for people to understand, you've got to set boundaries. I highly recommend going back and listening to these interviews. Each and every interview that we had, was meant to help you in some way. Our next interview was on June 17th with Terry Davies. We learn a lot in this interview with Terry, about the differences in cultures and so much more. Then we jumped in with James...

Support this podcast
Depression, anxiety, PTSD, and suicide are on the rise brought on by the global pandemic, as well as by the natural disasters, social injustices, political, and personal stressors. While we are all in this together to a certain extent, those with a genetic predisposition to are struggling even more. Add in the fact that disinformation and conspiracy theories are at an all time high, and it’s enough for even the most mentally healthy person to sink into despair. This show will give your hope, healing, and practical tips to make yourself – or those you care about – feel better. Top take-a-ways: Reactive depression vs. genetic depression and how sometimes strategies that worked for genetic depression are not enough in the face of catastrophe. The power of journaling, and how to release your deepest fears. You are not alone. Manage the uncertainty one day, one moment, or one zoom call at a time. Embrace each day as it comes, make right nowthe best it can be, given the tools you have, stop focusing on what may happen, and focus on what is right in front of you. Understand the power of words, and the human tendency to remember the negative above the positive. On August 20, 2015, after enduring years of intense workplace stress, bullying and harassment, Tracey Maxfield, a hard working, highly skilled, caring and compassionate nurse, hurtled headfirst down into an abyss of darkness, despair, pain and sorrow (she affectionately named the rabbit hole). Despite being no stranger to depression having made its acquaintance many times throughout the years, nothing could have prepared her for what was about to happen to her life, her heart, her soul, her very being. Escaping the Rabbit Hole: my journey through depression is a brutally honest, raw, and vivid description of what life is like after experiencing an acute depressive episode. Through a series of blog posts, journal entries and a letter to self, Tracey shares the excruciating emotional and physical pain she endured, the never-ending feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness and sadness which left her inert and unable to function, and her ongoing battle against DBS (death by suicide). Every single day, she had to make a choice, to fight the battle to live, or to surrender and die. She chose to live, and so began her most difficult and challenging life journey yet, to try and escape the rabbit hole. This book is a must read for anyone living with depression or caring for someone with depression, and for anyone who wants to know more about this greatly misunderstood mental health illness. Tracey shows us that words can be powerful and healing, and with time, it is possible to emerge from the rabbit hole of darkness and despair and reclaim your life. This is a story of courage, of hope, and of never giving up. https://traceymaxfield.com/ Feeling worn down and dull? Hoping for a little more sparkle, joy and enthusiasm in your day? Today on Awake and On Purpose, Jennifer speaks with Tracey Maxfield about depression and other mental illnesses, and why vulnerability is actually a great strength. Tracey shares how she escaped the “rabbit hole” and discusses how a class of teenagers unexpectedly revealed her life purpose to her. I didn’t want anyone to go through that same horror and pain and just that torment of being stuck in this darkness and think that they were never going to get out and they were alone. Happy 1 Year Birthday to the podcast and thank you for supporting this movement and allowing us to inspire you. The theme of the week is making changes in life, business, health and family. Question of the day is what changes are you willing to make to achieve what you desire? This Thursday, 6/6/19, we feature Tracey Maxfield on the show as she gives us clues on how to escape the rabbit of depression and anxiety.
Tracey, has dedicated her life to bringing awareness to the discussion of Mental Health in Canada/US. Tracey shares some statling statistics that sent my producer and myself fact checking before airing the show. Be empowered!
Tracey Maxfield suffered from severe depression. In her book, Escaping the Rabbit Hole: My Journey Through Depression, she describes how a ghost-like presence followed her, even whispered in her ear and told her all the ways she could do herself in. She called him DBS, or Death by Suicide. Tracey says it was a battle, but she won. It's a good thing because she was invited to speak to a group of middle school students about being an author but instead got questions about how they also can escape their rabbit holes. Turns out Tracey learned the numbers when it comes to depression, self-harm and suicide amongst kids is alarmingly high, and so now she's made it a mission to spread awareness about mental health in schools. Now that is a gift. Mentioned in this episode: TraceyMaxfield.com If you enjoy the episode, please subscribe for free, rate & review, and share with your friends. Thanks for listening! In 2015 I had massive acute depressive episode related to workplace stressors and bullying. 3 yrs of recovery; the toughest time ever, led to my personal escape from the rabbit hole in 2017. I published book in 2018 and put my house up for sale, donated possessions to charity and made the commitment to travel in the USA. I'm spreading the word about mental illness in children and teenagers and the effects of bullying. I am on a new life journey.

The challenges of dementia don't simply stop at forgetfulness. Virtually every area of a dementia patient's life feels the impact of this heartbreaking condition—including eating. Due to dementia, mealtimes that once served as a time of fellowship for families, instead become flash points for frustration and heartache. Each month on my show, Hope for the Caregiver, I invite dementia care expert, Tracey Maxfield, BSN, to call in from British Columbia and share tips with our audience. We recently tackled the challenging issue of eating that so many families caring for a loved one with dementia face.

"I Still Want To Attend Church, But I'm Caring for Someone With Dementia!" When caring for someone with dementia, isolation develops as an increasing challenge for family caregivers. A number of frustrating and embarrassing mishaps can await most caregivers and their loved ones, so the seclusion increases. Yet, pushing back against that isolation benefits not only the caregiver, but the loved one with dementia as well. Churches and places of worship provide great comfort, strength, and community to a family living with a member suffering from dementia. Attending those places for a long as possible helps both the caregiver and the loved one with dementia. Dementia Care expert, Tracey Maxfield, RN, serves as a regular contributor to the our radio show for caregivers. She recently provided several tips when taking a loved one with dementia out in public—and specifically to church.
Although many families feel stress during Christmas, caregivers of loved ones with dementia often feel increased heartache and tension. Due to that added anxiety many feel, dementia-care specialist Tracey Maxfield called the show to offer much needed help. On Sunday's show (12/10/201),, Tracey provided a checklist of tips learned from her 35 years as dementia care nurse. When you're with a person with dementia, everyone keeps thinking,"Oh well, let's do this Christmas—let's do this one the best ever.' But I think what caregivers need to do is really take a step back and look at what the significance of the holiday is for them and for their loved one. Tracey shared that many caregivers tend to overdo it for Christmas because of fear it may be their last one with their loved ones. Instead of accepting that undo pressure, Tracey recommended several ideas for a calmer, but more meaningful holiday season.
