We don't see it as an investment because typically when we're looking at diets or workout programs or things like that, they're really short-term solutions. And what I want to do is I want to reframe that. I want to change the narrative around our health so that we're thinking about how do I invest in my health? Because when we really think about it, when we're thinking about retirement, when we're thinking about financial freedom in our retirement, we don't want to be spending money on medication. We don't want to be spending time going to the doctor. We don't want to be spending money on insurance premiums. ...Taking care of your health doesn't help you live longer. It helps you to live more independently and to live better as you age. And so if you can live and not need medications and live independently in your home right now, versus going into some sort of assisted living facility, that's all going to save you money. And so taking care of your health today is one of the best investments that you can make in your future, especially in retirement." On Starting Small "Especially at the new year that if we need to or if we want to exercise five days a week, and our normal rule is to exercise for an hour a day, you do not need to exercise five days a week, or if your normal rule is to exercise for an hour a day, you do not have to exercise for an hour a day. You can start exercising, go for a walk for 15 minutes, go for a walk for five minutes, and do that for a while. Now, here's why this works. It works because it creates the habit of, or the skill rather of self-trust. Many of us, when we start a commitment to our health, there's something in the back of our heads that's like, yeah, but are you going to keep doing this? You've never been able to do it before. That little mean girl or inner critic inside of our heads, it's like full of self-doubt....

E210: Clinical trial evidence - Metabolic Effect of Sweeteners

The Leading Voices in Food

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 24, 2023 12:37

Sugar replacements, known generally as artificial sweeteners or non-nutritive sweeteners, have been in the news a lot. Rising concerns exist about safety and the effects of the sweeteners on many key features of health, including the microbiome. We need the help of talented scientists to sort through this complex web of information. Today's guest, Professor Eran Elinav, has done some of the seminal research in this area. He's an expert on systems immunology at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel. Interview Summary So back in 2014, you and your colleagues published a study in the prestigious journal Nature showing that sweeteners could induce glucose intolerance - a highly concerning finding, What's more, they did so by changing the microbiome. Would you tell us a little bit more about this study and what subsequent researchers found. In the study that published in Nature back in 2014, we explored the consumption of several kinds of artificial sweeteners when administered to mice. We wanted to ask a very simple but important question - are dose formulations of hypersweet compounds, which are so massively consumed by humans, in fact being responded to by our gut microbes. We know from our other studies that gut microbes contain a very well-developed machinery that enables them to respond and to digest multiple very complex formulations of food. We asked ourselves whether these seemingly inherent compounds could induce changes in the gut microbiome that could impact the health of these mice. And indeed, when we tested this, we mainly focused on saccharin, but in several experiments saw that could also be true for other common artificial sweeteners. We saw that the gut microbiome of mice being given saccharin in different concentrations, (using different strains of mice and different obesity conditions) were indeed capable of reacting to saccharin, changing their microbiome composition and behavior accordingly, and in some cases, resulting in a very surprising, counterintuitive worsening of glucose control towards diabetes. That was very concerning to us, because many millions of people worldwide consume artificial sweeteners with an aim of satisfying their sweet tooth without having to pay the caloric price. Especially people who are prone or already suffer prediabetes or even type II diabetes. What we could show was that the gut microbiome in some configurations could actually drive a disturbed control of sugar levels in the blood of these mice, which could suggest that in some cases, the gut microbiome could actually be bad for you when you consume artificial sweeteners in terms of your sugar management. That is a landmark study by any standard, so congratulations for doing such important science. That was back in 2014. So what has research shown since then?  We were able to prove in that study that consumption of artificial sweeteners was not only associated with changes in the microbiome and with the trend towards altered sugar control, but it was actually costly. We did this by transferring microbiomes from mice that were exposed to saccharin or to other artificial sweeteners into mice that do not have any microbiome of their own. They're called germ-free mice. We could see that these recipient mice who never consumed artificial sweeteners were developing the same exact disturbances in their sugar control just by the exposure to microbes that were previously exposed to artificial sweeteners. Now, this was very surprising, very important, and also caused a lot of backfire from the industry as one would expect. But it led to an array of follow up studies by multiple groups, mainly in other mice models and utilizing other formulations of artificial sweeteners, which basically suggested that our observations were correct. Artificial sweeteners were not inert when given to mice in different contexts and disease states. Now, the biggest limitation of our original study and all these many follow up studies was that all of these experiments were conducted in mice. The billion-dollar question was, can we recapitulate these findings at least, to some extent, in the human setting? This prompted us to perform a very ambitious human clinical trial which took multiple years to complete. It was finally published a year ago. The take home from that study which focused on all four commonly consumed artificial sweeteners was the concept that we've highlighted almost a decade ago - it was correct when applied to humans. Those findings raise alarms on many different levels. I appreciate you sharing that information with us. Recently, the World Health Organization has expressed concern about the sweeteners and their impact on people's ability to control body weight and health, and even risk for cancer. One of the counters from people who are in favor of these sweeteners is that the doses provided in these studies are many times what a human might ordinarily consume. What do you say to that? I will say two important things. First, this may have been true in previous studies a decade ago in which we all started by testing artificial sweeteners at relatively high doses. However, with years of follow-up studies and the expanded field of the doses of tested artificial sweeteners that were in many cases, reduced to those below the recommended daily allowance in humans. And, in the controlled clinical trials published a year ago, doses of four artificial sweeteners that we supplemented our participants were well below the recommended daily allowance. And still in some people, we could see that these seemingly inherent compounds were able to reproducibly change the microbiome and to change to our configuration which could induce alterations in blood sugar control in these individuals. When those microbiomes were transferred to mice that had never seen artificial sweeteners, the microbiome integrations could also induce identical disturbances of blood sugar control in transfer mice. So, I think that our studies and plethora of other studies generate knowledge suggesting that artificial sweeteners may not be natural to the human body even when consumed in conservative doses. Well, thanks for that clarification. You mentioned some pushback from industry. Tell me what form that took. Was there a particular player in industry that was doing the pushback? Did you think that their concerns were valid? Well, I think that it is a natural part of the evolution of a set of discoveries that have a direct impact on human health and human nutrition. And also, of course, economic considerations. Some of the claims were less than fair, and others were more relevant. One needs to understand, and I'm saying this both as a physician and as a scientist, especially given our early studies, that you can make the best effort that you can and comprehensively try to tackle a question. But there are always things people can claim that were not done or should be done better. Science is not a one-shot profession. We come up with a discovery and then we build upon it, and others also come in, validate it, build upon it, and this was the process. So, I take everything with love. Many other people have experienced a healthy discussion with the industry, and I think we've all matured into understanding, at least in our group, we are not against artificial sweeteners or any other food compound. We are just keen and interested in learning how different food compounds including artificial sweeteners, impact our body in unforeseen ways, and we focus on the gut microbiome. This huge and poorly explored ecosystem, which we now understand is an integral part of our body, has amazing biochemical capacities to degrade and respond to almost any substance. With artificial sweeteners, I think that this revelation is actually very helpful to the industry because with this knowledge, and knowledge that is added by others, we are hopeful that by understanding that artificial sweeteners are not inert to the human bodies, we would be able, together with the industry or with whoever is interested in helping this effort, understand which formulations are safer than others. Which doses are safer than others; and which are the human populations at risk, who should think twice before they consume these compounds. While others could consume them and enjoy them with relatively little risk. I think this maturation of our knowledge and maturation of the field is, in general, a very positive one. So, with respect to the impact of these sweeteners on the microbiome, is there reason to have special concern about children? When we conduct human clinical trials, we're always hypersensitive about special populations at risk such as children, people who are incarcerated, and so on and so forth. We usually tend at least in groundbreaking first human trials, such as the one that we've conducted with artificial sweeteners, we try to avoid these at-risk populations just so our initial observations are based on populations that are not at special risks. So, children, as you know, are always a special population that we're even more concerned about than a general population. Our own setting was not inclusive of children, though our inclusion criteria included healthy adults 18 years of age and older. So, with respect to children, I can say that our own data did not explore them to date. But in general, we are always especially concerned about children. Any potential metabolic perturbation during that critical growth window for children is of special medical concern to us. Let me ask you one final, big-picture question. The defenders of these products are basically implying, if not sort of stating directly, that the pursuit of sweetness is a reasonable thing to have and that these products can deliver the sweetness that people enjoy, but potentially without negative effects. That's the position. But what about that basic proposition that the pursuit of sweetness is a reasonable thing to do, because couldn't one say that this pursuit, whether it's delivered or whether the remedy to wanting to have more sweetness comes from either sugar or artificial sweeteners, there is potential to be harmed. Wouldn't it make sense to just gradually reduce the level of sweetness in the food supply, so that people become accustomed to less sweet taste overall? I couldn't agree more with your statement. I have to say that our findings related to the non-inertness of artificial sweeteners and the potential adverse impacts on human metabolism do not imply in any form or shape that we recommend that people convert back from artificial sweetener into increased consumption of sugar. We know from endless medical literature that sugar is probably an ultimate evil when consumed in excess and is directly responsible for contribution to multiple human diseases including obesity, type II diabetes, fatty liver, and even other diseases including cancer. So going back to sugar would be a big mistake. But I totally agree with you that positioning the public opinion as one which must choose between two sweet solutions, either sugar or non-nutritive sweeteners as the only options, basically is biased because we as a post-industrial revolution human population, have dramatically increased our sugar consumption. I don't think that we need to choose between these two options. I personally opt to go back to water rather than choose between these two options which carry along probably adverse health consequences, at least in some human populations. But more than that, as our guest on today's episode explains, the gut is referred to as the second brain because it has just as many nerve endings as we do in the thinking brain in our heads!  Those two areas of our body - although seemingly far apart, are so tightly connected! Jillian Teta brings all the information to this episode. You're going to want to listen twice! Get full show notes and more information here: https://elizabethsherman.com/podcast/118 Jillian Teta Bio Dr. Jillian Sarno Teta is the author of “Natural Solutions for Digestive Health” and the creator of Fix your Digestion. Whatever you are trying to do; whether it’s to eat better, to try to transform the way your body looks, trying to be consistent in the gym, building an online business, trying to cultivate your relationships, do personal development work, it all comes down to a level of self trust.” - Jill Coleman Today’s conversation is with Jill Coleman, a fitness expert who is living her best life all through her passion for coaching in the areas of mindset, body and business. In the midst of my dietitian career, I did what we all sometimes do, take a step back from all the things we learn and see what other approaches are out there to best help our clients. Episode 2- The 4 Power Stealing Roles of Food

Captivatingly Confident Podcast

You know how in life we all have roles to play? Well, food has roles too! And just like in life, those different rolls can take the power away from you, and makes you feel like you are unable to make beneficial choices that bring lasting change in your life.  Food has four main roles in our life: Social, Emotional, Fuel and Nourishment. Each role is a power play where you can either come out on top, feeling empowered and confident, or be defeated, and feel guilty and powerless. Let's take a look at the four roles food plays: 1) Social  It’s amazing how being with other people when we eat impacts our choices! Especially when it comes to holidays, special occasions and celebrations. Or if you have a job in an environment where food is brought in frequently (ie: hospital, office, school etc). So many of my clients struggle to make choices about food in social situations due to peer pressure or feeling like they have to eat something, or they will make someone feel bad.  Another angle of this is the FOMO. Yup, the fear of missing out. “It’s the holidays!” you say. It’s so and so’s birthday, there’s cake!! It’s the fear of being left out of the party if you choose not to partake in the offering.  It’s easy to see how your power to make the choices that you feel good about goes out the window in social situations. The good news is, you can take it back!! But before we get there, let’s look at the other three roles.  2) Emotional This is probably the most powerful of the three roles and the one that takes control most quickly. Emotional eating can include snacking out of boredom, chowing-down to hide uncomfortable emotions, “rewarding” yourself for a job well-done,  and everything in between. This is the role of food that we try to control, but often feel like we’re failing at.  Emotional eating can be defined by eating when you’re more “head hungry” rather than stomach hungry. If you’re head hungry, it usually shows up in the form of eating when you’re bored, craving something or distracted. Some of these times are more habitual than others, which compounds the struggle to overcome it.  3) Fuel Food as fuel is the role that gets confusing and convoluted. Each body is fueled by different types of food. Some people thrive on carbohydrates and others on fat. You can start to feel powerless when you try and eat according to a diet or article saying what and when you should eat and it doesn’t produce the promised results.  Food is used as fuel when eating after noticing you are tummy hungry, and getting that rush of grhelin (the hunger hormone that makes your tummy growl). We often still make unwise choices in deciding what type of fuel we put into our bodies however, and you can also feel powerless to control the hunger when it keeps coming back due to the wrong kind of fuel choice for your body.  and finally  4) Nourishment  Nourishing foods are different from comfort foods. Comfort foods fall under emotional eating. The role of food as nourishment comes from a place where we eat “clean” or “healthy”- or what we determine that to be. For example, you know what foods you “should” be eating that are “healthy and nourishing” but those are the foods you crave and desire less often, making them harder to eat. Think chicken and broccoli.  Part of the powerlessness here comes from not knowing what foods nourish your body and which don’t. Just because broccoli is deemed healthy does not mean it’s for everybody. Some people get extremely gassy and bloated when they eat cruciferous veggies like broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage etc. Understanding what foods make you feel energized, pain free, and happy is part of the process of taking your power back.  There is a 5th role that food plays and that is the role of enjoyment. There will be times where you eat food simply because it is pleasurable and enjoyable. I normally put this under Emotional, but I wanted to point out that just because something is yummy does not mean it needs to be controlling or take power away from you. This is also a whole other topic surrounding awareness and intuitive eating that we will explore next week.  So, let’s get down to it! How do you take the power away from these different food roles and wield it to make empowering choices for yourself? First, you have to be aware of what role food is taking for you in any given moment. Is it celebratory? Boredom? Stress? What emotions and thoughts are you having around your food? In the Captivatingly Confident Small Group we dive deep into understanding how to identify these thoughts and emotions and use them to better understand food roles.  Once you are aware of what role it’s taking, you can decide if you are truly hungry or just eating from one of the roles. If you are truly hungry, then you can decide what food would satisfy the hunger and balance your HEC.  HEC is your Hunger, Energy and Cravings (I borrowed this concept from Metabolic Effect). You can choose foods that fulfill your hunger (spoiler alert- carbs by themselves will not satiate you even if it is fruit or veggies. Put some protein and fat with those carbs). You want to aim for foods that give you Energy, not drain it. You should not need a nap after you eat. And finally, foods that help reduce your Cravings. Hyperpalatable foods (processed foods that are designed to be super yummy, like chips, fries, ice cream, candy, fast food) generally increase your cravings for them.  Understanding how foods impact your HEC takes some awareness and practice, but the more you do it in the beginning, the less conscious of it you will have to be in the long run. It becomes second nature to choose foods that balance HEC and get you where you want to be long term.  Identifying food roles (Social, Emotional, Fuel, and Nourishment) when you are eating is one of the main keys to unlocking health, weight loss, and having a body and life you cherish!  Make sure you join us in the Captivatingly Confident Facebook group where we will flesh this out some more on Sunday for Captivating Convos LIVE!

Welcome back for another amazing podcast! Today your very own Tiny Fit Diva, Kylene Terhune is interviewing Integrative Physician Jade Teta, demystifying metabolism, stress and hormones. Tune in to learn more!Jade is an Integrative Physician, Author and Cofounder of Metabolic Effect. He is an inspiring guide on the journey of human health and self development.Let’s talk about female metabolism. A woman’s body is designed to create life. Women have narrow and sensitive stress barometer. It’s asking, "Am I healthy enough to have a baby, carry it to term and support it?” So, issues with hunger, energy, cravings, and low libido, are a sign that your metabolism is not that happy with you. This is why fasting Keto diets or too much cardio might not work for you while they may work just fine for someone else. We can learn a lot by taking a close look at the menstrual cycle. On days 1-14 estrogen dominates. Estrogen is a stress shield. It helps you hold on to muscle so you can eat more and you can exercise hard. The body is saying let’s prepare the body for implantation. On days 14-28 the body wants to calm down and chill. Let’s look at how metabolism is affected by a woman’s cycle and ways women are sabotaging their metabolism. The biggest answer here is stress. Women have a lot of pressure to present a certain way, to look good and to be smart, make money, manage the household and be a good mom, and they don’t want to ask for help a lot. It’s amazing! Women should switch out of the mindset of doing and being everything. Remember: you cannot do extreme things for extreme periods of time. How does stress feel? Cortisol is a stress hormone that causes cravings. If you’re choosing comfort foods over salad. If your libido is low, your body may being telling you that it isn’t fit reproduce. Looking at if from a biochemistry point of view: you can’t feel cortisol. The wired feeling that you feel when you’re stressed, that’s adrenaline. That’s short term. The body can deal with that nicely, that kind of anxiety and be dealt with with some exercise. Long term stress, or cortisol, can be worked through with walking. hot baths, epsom salt baths, sauna time, power naps and physical affection. Let you metabolism know that it has the resources it needs. What kind of exercise suits you? Exercise enough so that you feel energized but not exhausted. Start with 3 times per week and listen to your body. Jade teaches how to tell if running is the right exercise for your metabolism type. First of all, the objective of exercise is not to loose weight; it is to feel tighter and more athletic. The diet aspect of your health plan is what will help the fat fall off. Jade recommends a vegetable-based diet with lean protein to keep you full. Research is not clear on fat and starch. What can you look for on a label? Real food yes is always best, but when you are on-the-go, which convenient foods are the most likely to replicate “real food.”What we do know is that we can identify the aspects of “real food” so that you can make sure to mimic that in your diet. Look for foods that are high in fiber and protein, and low in starch, fat and sugar. How do you manage your hunger? You should be able to feel hungry, ride that wave and have it dissipate. It’s a process of slowly controlling things. Fasting can be beneficial because you learn to control hunger and manage that feeling. Fasting is just one of the tools you can use, but it’s not the only tool in your tool box. Again, your metabolism will want you to change it up over time. In all things Jade recommends being open to new ideas. Check him out at: http://jadeteta.com/Thanks for tuning in today and we'll be back next week! The Tiny Fit Diva Podcast teaches you how to balance your hormones, eat what you want, release the guilt, and have freedom mentally and physically from the restrictive mentality of dieting. Some of you remember my dear friend Jill Coleman from her first appearance on the show in 2016. This time I've invited Jilly back to talk about something very specific that she is SO FREAKING GOOD at helping people with - Food Obsession. If you think about food all the time, beat yourself up about your choices, question yourself about it, feel frozen about making decisions because you've taken in so much conflicting or complicated nutrition information through books, magazines, and programs OR and you regularly don't know what to eat or can't enjoy an easy relationship to food for both vital energy and pleasure without feeling guilty or ashamed this interview will help. About Jill Coleman: In addition to launching her personal brand at JillFit.com in 2010, Jill Coleman was a co-founder of Metabolic Effect, Inc. Her 16-year journey in the health and fitness industry began when she got her very first job at a gym just for the free membership at 15! Since then, it’s a been a whirlwind of education in exercise science and nutrition, fitness competitions, landing several national covers for fitness modeling and plenty of business growth. Her work has been featured in SELF magazine, Family Circle, SHAPE, Women’s Health magazine, Prevention magazine and many online news outlets like Yahoo Health, LiveStrong.com and AOL’s That’s Fit. Her passion lies in coaching in the areas of mindset, body and business, which she does via her flagship program, The Best Of You (BOY) Coaching Club mentorship, as well as a few signature online programs, like the Mindset Makeover, the Food Obsession Boot Camp and her 52-week exercise program, the Total Training Experience (TTE). In this episode, Jill shares: 1. Using food as a control mechanism so you can present a certain way 2. Using fullness, hunger, satiety and satisfaction to navigate the best choices for you personally 3. How to deal with all the reasons food creates guilt in your life - not finishing it, over-indulging, etc...

Why You are Not Losing Weight: Eating Late at Night and how to Stop

4 WAYS TO STOP EATING A MILLION CALORIES EVERY NIGHT By Jill Coleman I don’t blame you for wanting to eat everything you can possibly get your hands on at night. A few months ago, I was called in for jury duty. I had never been and was fairly happy about being able to sit and read a book for 8 hours straight. I thought, this can’t be that bad–basically an excuse to not be on the computer or do real work all day. Nice. Or so I thought. While I didn’t get picked, I still had to be in that tiny room, sitting in a tiny chair with 100 other people for 8 hours, and the farthest we could walk was the 50 feet to the bathroom. By 5pm, I was so stir crazy and annoyed by the confinement of the day that all my singular mind had the mental energy for was stopping by the store on the way home and then proceeding to guzzle an entire bottle of wine. WHY DID THIS HAPPEN?? I was actually thinking to myself on the way home, “Now I understand why people who sit at a desk all day are so frigging drained when they get home, and it’s all they can do to NOT eat the house.” WOW. Call it irritation, stress, annoyance, confinement, boredom, needing a reward, whatever. But after having probably logged 100 steps TOTAL that day and 8 HOURS OF SITTING, I felt 100% like I deserved a bottle of wine for my ability to do that. WTF? Haha! How crazy is that?? And yet, so many of us feel like this every. Single. Day. Get home after a long day of being sedentary at work and can’t help but eat everything nonstop from dinner until bedtime. I get it.  Mentally, we are on empty. Willpower is exhaustible, and at the end of a long day of just even TALKING, there’s none left. And when willpower is gone, all that’s left are the habits. So if you’ve developed good habits, those are in place. If you’ve developed poor habits (like sitting on the couch watching TV pounding chips), then those are there, too. And isn’t TV funny? It’s actually EASIER to watch TV than it is to go to bed! Because going to bed requires brushing teeth and taking contacts out, changing clothes, etc. Ha! And so often we know we should just go to bed, but relaxing with TV and food is easier. Watching TV is the path of least resistance. I was talking about this with my mom recently and I was dying laughing because I was saying that TV is actually easier than sitting quietly alone, “because when you do that, you have to think about stuff,” is the reason my mom gave. And she’s exactly right! THINKING WHEN WE ARE DEPLETED IS HARD WORK. And resisting sweets and treats takes mindfulness, AKA “thinking” and thinking’s just not a luxury we have at night after a long, hard day of it. So. I don’t blame you. BUT! The issue is that we need to figure this out, because the current way of handling it is not working. So, how do we then NOT eat a milling calories every night? Metabolic Effect calls this “continuous meal” when you eat from dinner time straight until bedtime. We do this, don’t we?? I thought about this from all angles and came up with 4 tools that can help: 1) Find ways to replenish willpower throughout the day. You can think of your willpower like a battery that get drained as the day goes on. It’s highest in the morning (it’s no wonder people cite breakfast as their healthiest meal of the day!) and with every decision throughout the day, willpower gets less and less. So, it would follow that if you could take moments throughout the day to replenish it, charge the battery, you’d be more equipped to deal with resisting sweets at night. Some of my favorite ways to boost willpower (AKA restorative activities) include leisure walking, 5-10 min meditation, light stretching of foam rolling, reading a book, creative writing in a journal, sketching or even light yoga or tai chi. Kelly McGonigal in her book, ‘The Willpower Instinct’ shows how even 5 minutes of meditation throughout the day can make a significant impact. I also recommend reading ‘The Power of Full Engagement’ by Tony Schwartz and ‘Switch’ by Chip and Dan Heath. 2) Eat more and satisfying stuff earlier in the day. Often cravings are related to feelings of deprivation. When we feel deprived for a day or a week or a month, the compensatory overindulgence is inevitable. So, it would follow that if you can stay MORE satisfied and satiated throughout the day, that compensatory hunger and cravings would be less at night. So the answer to quitting nighttime binging is actually NOT to be more strict during the day. This can be a tough pill to swallow though, especially when we wake up in a state of remorse from the night before–often we want to literally FAST all day “to make up for it.” No ma’am. Instead, find ways to preempt cravings and hunger. First and foremost, this includes eating more protein and fiber-rich foods earlier in the day. They keep us feeling fuller for longer and stabilize energy. The second way is to incorporate preemptive cheats. I’ve written on these quite a bit, but they are foods that are satiating, but don’t necessarily help with fat loss. They are more neutral and we don’t need a lot to feel satisfied. Examples are: a couple strips of bacon, a few squares of dark chocolate, a sprinkle of cheese on salads or even a few slices of cheese off a block, avocado, guacamole, sugar-free fro-yo, or even a single glass of red wine. They help take the edge off but don’t usually add pounds if you are watching servings. They act as “built-in relief” for your diet. Have a serving each day or every other day.  3) Find workarounds. Sometimes you just have to rewire your nighttime behaviors. I recommend checking out the book, ‘The Power of Habit’ by Charles Duhigg. The idea is that when you spend time building healthy habits, when your willpower gets drained, you default to those effective habits instead of poor ones. Whatever you practice is what you get good at. And Day 1 of practice is always the hardest, but the more you do it, the more automatic it becomes. So workarounds will be things that take you AWAY from that typical couch-TV-food scenario. They are physical, nutritional or lifestyle-based tools. This is a modified version of what coach Mike T. Nelson uses as a guide for fasting: Physical workarounds: Go workout after dinner, take a walk, do some light stretching or foam rolling, go to a yoga class, go dancing, etc. Nutritional workarounds: Use the Metabolic Effect cocoa drink (1-2 TB unsweetened cocoa powder, hot water, stevia to taste) or a large hot tea. Both keep your mouth occupied! Take BCAAs or chug a liter of water. Lifestyle workarounds: #GYAIB (Get Yo Ass In Bed) and read, meditate or have sex :), blog, pay the bills, call a friend, take a long, hot bath, etc. Start by picking 1 or 2 things you could see yourself doing INSTEAD of your usual scenario and practice them until they become second nature. My personal tool is getting into bed right after a later dinner and reading.  4) Incorporate “Intermittent Sampling”: a practice in moderation. My house, purse and gym bag are littered with half-eaten protein bars (wrapped, I swear!). Yes, it’s a touch gross but it serves a purpose. It’s part of what I call “intermittent sampling” and it’s a PRACTICE in moderation. “But Jill, I haaaaaaate moderation, AND I CAN’T DO IT!”  I get it. I used to eat 5 protein bars in a row, nevermind a half or third of a bar–are you kidding me?? But, yes, over time, I started practicing NOT eating the whole thing. Here’s how: I’d get a bar out and take 1/3 of it, eat it, get the taste and put the rest back into the cabinet or into my purse (ha!). Then, I’d go do something for AT LEAST 10 minutes. If I was still thinking about the bar, I’d go back and eat another third. Then I’d put it back. Same thing. This time I’d wait AT LEAST 20 minutes and if I still wanted more, I’d go back and finish it. Over time, more often than not, I was able to take a third or a half and forget about the rest until later. This may seem silly but the idea that you can just go cold-turkey is a little shortsighted. And besides, I don’t want to have to go cold-turkey. I want to be able to control my cravings and use a moderate approach to feel satisfied with less. I used to be someone who would HAVE TO FINISH THE WHOLE BAG/PACKAGE/ROLL of whatever it was. And this was a practice that helped me overcome that. The One Fry Rule: Another example. My brother Danny is 23 years old and he lives with Jade and I. Like most 23 year old guys, he orders a burger and fries 90% of the time we go to dinner. So I started just plucking one single fry from his plate every dinner. Even when I didn’t really want one. Simply to REINFORCE that I can taste something and then move on. I’d grab a fry, douse it in ranch :) and then proceed to eat my #BAS or protein & veggies. This became a practice that has carried over into all meals and all my interactions with food. So, is there something you can PRACTICE moderation with? Remember, we are not trying to be perfect. We are trying to not eat a million calories at night. So even a little better is still an improvement. What food would you like to continue to be able to eat but need to practice your moderate approach around? Neghar pours baby glasses of wine and that’s what works for her. This stuff may been neurotic or weird or overly obsessive, but it’s actually the opposite. Because these practices automatically put me in more control than ever, effortlessly. It’s simply just “the way I eat” now. No stress, no binging, no obsessive thinking about food, just self-trust, meal to meal, situation to situation. Over time, it’s completely liberating. Hope these four things help! My advice is to start with just one option and see how you do, instead of trying to implement them all at once. Start with the easiest one first, the one you can see yourself doing right away. And then PRACTICE. And be gentle with yourself, and just do your best. Many of us have many million-calorie nights to overturn in terms of habit formation. So relax into the process and don’t expect perfection and I promise it’ll get more manageable with time. Good luck! Ox, Jill

Dr. Jade Teta is an integrative physician, naturopath, and personal trainer with over 25 years of experience helping people achieve their health, weight loss, and fitness goals. If you've been counting calories and exercising as part of a health and wellness program, there can come a time when the scale suddenly stops moving. But beyond the horizon of the fitness industry's fetish with the scale and dogmatism of "calories in vs. calories out and "eat less, exercise more" lies the truth about what our body really craves: Our undivided attention to the metabolism. On episode 067, Dr. Jade Teta stops by the studio with Josh Trent to share his decades of experience working with the human metabolism, and uncover the top 5 metabolic myths that are holding people back from having real health and wellness. By teaching us how to understand our individual and unique metabolism, Dr. Jade Teta's methods prove how we can keep our bodies, hormones, and energy in check. Dr. Jade Teta is an integrative physician, naturopath, and personal trainer with over 25 years of experience helping people achieve their health, weight loss, and fitness goals. He is the founder & CEO of Metabolic Effect Inc., and author of the best-selling book, The Metabolic Effect Diet. He is a regular contributor to many publications, including The Huffington Post, and the Textbook of Natural Medicine, the number one natural medicine textbook used in medical schools across the country. Jade has completed an estimated 10,000 workouts in his lifetime, and has worked with thousands of weight loss and fitness seekers from all over the world through his Metabolic Effect Clinic and online programs. The Metabolic Effect Each person's body is different and therefore, the metabolism of each person is not the same as another's. Dr. Jade learned this the hard way during medical school when his busy schedule was getting in the way of him eating and exercising properly. After months of continuously gaining weight by consuming unhealthy foods and drinking so-called "healthy" juices from places such as Jamba Juice, Jade had a revelation about metabolism. It was then and there that the theory of the Metabolic Effect was born. When we're young, our metabolism can be easily calculated, but it's not the same as our bodies change as we age. This is when you need to become a metabolic detective to better understand your body. Discover what foods work for you and what doesn't anymore. How to Become a Metabolic Detective, Not a Dieter The difference between being a detective and being a dieter is that a dieter goes by rules. Unfortunately, being a dieter is not the best path to living a healthy lifestyle because all of these rules can really restrict a person as far as their diet and they can feel stuck. Once a dieter is done with one diet and its rules, they just move onto the next one hoping that it will show them the results they want. To be a detective, you can't follow strict rules of eating only certain foods. Instead, you need to follow guidelines and structured flexibility to help find your best way to approach nutrition.  The first step to becoming a metabolic detective and not a dieter is to understand that everyone's metabolism is different. Once you know that, you can learn how to keep your metabolism in balance. How to Keep Your Metabolism in Balance There are two key ways that you can keep your metabolism in balance. One is HEC and the other is the Golidlocks Zone. HEC or Hunger Energy Cravings is your body's way of telling you that you're in balance. Your hunger, your energy, and your cravings are there to let you know if your metabolism is in check or not. HEC biofeedback clues can also include anything from exercise, mood, sleep, digestion, headaches, and libido can also tell us a lot about our hormonal balance. The Goldilocks Zone is all about balancing the body to make sure that the metabolism is in check. Think of a seesaw that represents your body. This seesaw needs to be perfectly balanced by not taking too much, not taking too little, but just the right  amount of everything including fats, carbohydrates, exercise, stress, sleep etc. Try to aim for your personal Goldilocks Point by seeing how many carbohydrates you can consume while still being able to show results by working out, getting enough sleep, meditating etc. to keep your HEC in check. You may have to adjust your diet by taking out different foods and adding in new substitutes to help stay balanced. The 5 Metabolic Myths During today's podcast, Jade and I spoke about the 5 Metabolic Myths: 1. You'll get sustainable, predictable, linear, and fair results if you follow a guidebook AND The body is able to easily burn fat and build at the same time The truth: As previously discussed in this blog, all of our bodies are different and you can only truly find results with trial and error to try to keep HEC in check. The body is only able to easily burn fat and build muscle at the same time if a) you're a beginner to fitness or b) you're taking steroids and other supplements. Once you've been working out constantly, you'll find that your metabolism won't do both at the same time. To burn fat and gain muscle, you need to switch up with different exercises and eating habits. 2. All you need to worry about are calories. The truth: If you cut calories on purpose, your metabolism will increase your feelings for hunger and increase your metabolic rate.  3. Hormones work in isolation and are either good like human growth hormone or bad like cortisol. The truth: Metabolism has multiple mechanisms that it overlaps and works with hormones. 4. There is no good way to assess the balance of hormones without blood testing. The truth: You need to look at different areas including your blood to fully understand your hormones and what your body needs in order to be balanced.  5. The metabolism of leading people and overweight people work in the same way. The truth:  All of our bodies are different. Each obese person is different and each lean person is resistant. The 4 METABOLIC TOGGLES These are 4 quadrants to help keep your HEC in check: ELEL: eat less exercise less ELEM: eat less, exercise more EMEL: eat more, exercise less EMEM: eat more exercise more “Your greatest difficulty is with yourself; for you are your own stumbling-block. BCAAs – Branch Chain Amino Acids - read about how they work to reduce cravings by decreasing your appetite, keeping your blood sugar steady, and reducing cortsiol levels here, or you can really geek out here.   2. L-Glutamine (amino acid supplement) - Many people swear by this supplement as a cravings killer. I like it because it's good for my gut, too.  This blog does a good job of explaining the science and includes references to the data. 3. Soluble fiber – I like mixing acacia fiber in a glass of water (you can also add to a smoothie) - here's why. Note: don't overdo it or it will clog you up! 4. Cocoa - go for unsweetened cacao powder and make a hot chocolate (just mix with warmed almond milk) or a delicious, super simple dessert like avocado pudding or any of these suggestions inspired by the Paleo community.   BONUS: The team over at Metabolic Effect recently launched a new product called Craving Cocoa that combines a lot of these ingredients (BCAA, fiber and cacao) all in one great mix! Get it here. 5. Dark chocolate – I like 85% and higher, but make sure the cacao content is at least over 70%.  6. Fizzy water - I like seltzer/mineral water with lemon or lime added. Drink this first, then decide if you need the thing you were craving.  7. Replacement treats - sometimes these will work to shut down those cravings. Pay attention to what works for you: •   Decaf coffee (or tea) after a meal (note: the nutritional police are still debating this one, but it works for me) •   1 glass (or 1/2 glass) of red wine after a meal  •   Have whatever you're craving PLUS a healthy treat. For example, chocolate with an apple; half that cupcake and a pear, etc. •   Paleo desserts - as mentioned above, make something yummy without a load of sugar in it. Just google "Paleo desserts" or scroll through my Facebook page for ideas. There are so many super easy things you can make in 5 minutes that are utterly satisfying and don't sabotage your wellness goals.  What to DO instead: INTERRUPT THE PATTERN!  •   Brush your teeth and drink a tall glass of water •   Chew 100% Xylitol Gum or a super strong mint •   Get visual – keep a picture of you looking great or of something that makes you happy and reminds you of you at your best!   •   Get outside: breathe deeply (all the way down in your belly) and/or walk for 10-20 mins.   •   Do a 1-minute cardio blitz. For example, jump on a rebounder (mini-trampoline) or do 25 jumping jacks and 10 burpees right there in the kitchen - better yet, turn on some music and DANCE! •   Get naked. Or, just change clothes into something you love. Anything to be reminded of being in your body.  •   Or, just EAT IT, but don’t eat AROUND IT. For Pete's sake, it's just FOOD. Be the boss of it. Eat it, enjoy it and pat yourself on the back for not freaking out. Don't eat everything else in sight in order to avoid that thing you're craving. In this interview I talk with Brian Compton of Fact and Fitness.  Brian is a young trainer who is an online Fitocracy Team Fitness coach as well through his own site.  Brian is a graduate of the program offered from Metabolic Effect in Winston-Salem, NC.  The “eat less, exercise more” idea for fat loss isn’t just flawed, it’s broken.  Rapid weight loss efforts lead to 95% of dieters regaining the weight back within a year of dieting, and 66% weighing more than when they started the diet.  I prefer to take a more sustainable approach to fat loss with my online clients.  I don’t believe in providing meal plans for my clients, either.  Done-for-you diets never work.  Instead, I educate my clients and provide them with the tools they need to setup a long-term meal plan (lifestyle) they can follow effortlessly, long after our time concludes together. In this episode we discuss: Metabolic Effect Brian's first positive experience with a client Who inspired Brian  His goals Where he got his Fantasy Football name His ideal Super Hero Where the name of his company came from A little discussion of our favorite things in NC Links:   Metabolic Effect Fitocracy Team Fitness Fact and Fitness Tim Ferriss Engineering the Alpha
