Season 3, Ep 7: Reloading lost episodes from the early Final Word. It's January 2017, Pakistan have wrapped up in Sydney, and we're spending a moment on the great undersung career of Younis Khan: on the occasion of his 34th Test ton, reaching the rare club with more hundreds than fifties. David Warner made his own in the first session of a Test, and backed it up with the fastest Australian fifty, while we made some wildly inaccurate predictions about his future. Matt Renshaw was trying to get to India, Peter Handscomb had never been dismissed short of fifty, Hilton Cartwright debuted. Plus an early Adam use of "private collection" and a sitcom starring Viv Richards and Misbah-ul-Haq. In T20s, Deandra Dottin was the Terminator, the Beth Mooney and Kirby Short partnership was growing, and we got in early demanding that Michael Klinger captain the Australian side - which he did. At school in the UK Tony won two national prizes from writing competitions and with some pals ran a successful underground school magazine. By the age of 18 Tony was making his own small professional films that received wide public distribution. Klinger worked on the iconic TV series “The Avengers” and in the following years wrote and/ or produced films all over the world such as “The Kids are Alright”, “Deep Purple Rises Over Japan”, “The Butterfly Ball” and many more. Over a distinguished, award-winning career Tony served as company President or Chief Executive for media companies in the UK and USA.-Tony later worked in partnership with his father, the legendary film producer, Michael Klinger, who made such films as “Get Carter” “Repulsion” “Cul-de-Sac” and worked together with him on “Gold” “Shout at the Devil” and “Rachel's Man” and several others Tony made with others such as “Full Circle”. He knows what it's like to work with stars having done so with people like Jack Nicholson, Peter Ustinov, Lee Marvin, Sir John Gielgud, Roger Moore, Deep Purple, Barbara Parkins, The Who, Peter Finch, Susannah York, Michael Caine and many others.

In this episode of the Cricket Library Podcast, we ask Michael where his passion for the game began, his entry into Grade Cricket and playing in underage teams for Victoria. He shares some insights from his First Class career, including some reflections on his time playing in Australia and overseas, captaining teams and winning titles at South Australia, Gloucestershire and the Perth Scorchers. Michael also gives us an update on the health of his wife Cindy, making his debut for Australia as well as sharing some of his hopes for the future. Today's guest was one of the best batters in Australian domestic cricket and county cricket over the past 10 years. Michael scored almost 25,000 runs in professional cricket for 3 different states and Gloucestershire County Cricket Club in the UK. When he retired he was the leading run-scorer in Big Bash history and one of the most dominant and consistent batters in T20 domestic cricket in Australia and the UK. However he wasn't always an excellent or even good T20 batter and when he was younger, his game certainly wasn't set up for that. Through some thoughtful planning around understanding his strengths and accessing the risks involved with certain shots, he evolved himself and his game into someone who dominated all 3 formats of the game. Despite his phenomenal numbers in the back half of his career Klinger managed just the 3 international matches for Australia and he shares the reason why he thinks that was the case. In this episode we spoke about how he managed his game between Australia and the UK and the different challenges that he faced. Having transitioned from playing to professional coaching last year, it was fascinating to hear how Klinger now views the game as a coach and what he looks for technically in batters as a result of what he found out about his own game late in his career. There's so much value in this episode, so lets get into it!
