Today on Part two of our conversation with Howard Murray, son of comedian Jan Murray, we find that like the Passover holiday that just ended a few weeks back, this one is full of both Maror and Charoset. Meaning, this episode is full of both the bitter and the sweet. Jan was kind enough to tell us some very funny details about his family's annual Sedar dinners as well as a truly horrific story that has to be heard to be believed. In between all that, we discuss some his father's film role like History of the World Part One, Who Killed Teddy Bear, Which Way to the Front, Tarzan and the Great River and more. We also discuss what made his dad laugh, what restaurants he frequented and many more of the comedians that Howard essentially grew up with in the Murray household. Howard talked to us for close to two hours for parts one and two of the podcast and was funny, gracious, reflective, honest and patient with all our questions. All in all, we'd say it was a wonderful two episodes and you can make up your mind for yourself, as part two is coming up right now. The Rarified Heir Podcast. Everyone has a story.

Cue the rim-shot, because Jack Carter is in the house. Best known as the purveyor of rapid fire jokes in the best Vegas tradition, Jack was also a fine singer, dancer, and actor with numerous stage and screen credits to his name. Early on he claimed a bit of television history as an early host of both the Texaco Star Theater and the Cavalcade of Stars. Those gigs earned him his own show on NBC which was the lead in to Sid Caesar and Imogene Coca's Your Show of Shows. A tireless performer, Jack was a mainstay at the Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts and on game shows (Password, The Match Game), as well as continuing with stand up appearances well in to his 80s. A comedy historian once referred to Jack's style as 'slick, fast, and furious" -- an apt description and one worthy of a 21 rim shot salute! As always, find extra clips below and thanks for sharing our shows. Want more Carter? This is a treat -- Jack's full routine on the Ed Sullivan Show from back in the days when television was in glorious black and white. This is a good intro to Jack's style. https://dai.ly/x2w04mb With a rapid fire style, it's no wonder that Jack was a favorite at the Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts -- here he ostensibly roasts Monty Hall, but it's the other panelists who take most of the fire, https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1kx411e7aK/ Jack was a television pioneer and for a while his own variety show was the lead in to Sid Caesar and Imogene Coca's legendary "Your Show of Shows". At a school reunion Jack was called on for some memories those times and he sure delivered. https://youtu.be/DqIbXfTF708?si=Oprzg0A0MBN-D6ke

Cardinals Outfielders, Potential Picks, and Sleepers to Watch for the Upcoming Baseball Season Podcast Description Jordan Walker is expected to make the Cardinals roster, joining Tyler O'Neill and Lars Nootbar to form the three starting outfielders. Jack Flaherty is looking healthy and strong, and Stephen Matz is a potentially valuable pick to make. Other prospects to look out for include Mason Wynn, Mason Kölker, and Tommy Edmond, while Ryan Helsley is likely to get 90-95% of the save opportunities. Alec Bump is a recommended third baseman to target, and Ryan McMahon and Yoan Moncada could also be useful. Mike suggests Sleepers and the Boss podcast, and FanGrabs pitch modeling leaderboards, to get ready for the upcoming baseball season. Key Lessons Jordan Walker is expected to make the Cardinals roster, joining Tyler O'Neill and Lars Nootbar as the three starting outfielders. Stephen Matz is a potentially valuable pick to make. Alec Bump is a recommended third baseman to target, and Ryan McMahon and Yoan Moncada could also be useful. Mason Wynn is a minor league player that could make a contribution to the team and has been impressive both offensively and with his arm. John Denton from the St. Louis Cardinals talks about the team's future star, Mason Kölker, and encourages fans to follow him on MLB.com and Twitter. He also suggests Tyler O'Neill as a potential player to target, as he could be hitting 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases in his prime. Mike has concerns about Jordan Walker's ability to adjust to major league pitching, as he is only 20 Dave McDonald took a risk and drafted him in the 10th round in a competitive league, but Mike believes there are other safer options at Walker's price point. Chris chimes in to discuss the potential of Walker. Jordan Walker is a 20 year old player who has been hyped up but may not live up to the expectations Jack Flaherty is a potential bounce back candidate who has been healthy for the first time in three years and could provide value if taken as a third or fourth starter. A friend of the speaker has taken a lot of high risk pitchers for their fantasy team, but the speaker opts for safer picks. They mention Steven Matz as a potential steal on the Cardinals, who has shown consistency before, but has had issues with blow up games Steven Matz is a promising pitcher at a good price, while Hellesley is a top-five/six closer if he can pitch multiple days a week. Giovanni Guy Aigo's should not be drafted with a top 300 pick because he won't provide consistent saves and won't help in wins or strikeouts. Lars Nootbar is a lesser known prospect who could provide good value in fantasy drafts Tommy Edmond may be targeting even more stolen bases with the new rules in place. Nolan Aeronado is being drafted too early, and Jordan Montgomery is being overvalued. Mike recommends the Sleepers and the Boss podcast, which covers all teams in the American and National leagues He also recommends looking into the pitch modeling leaderboards on FanGrabs for advanced pitching evaluations. People often panic at the third base position when drafting, but the best option is to go with the best player available. A recommended third baseman to target is Alec Bump, who is projected to hit for more power and is in the middle of a loaded lineup Additionally, Mike recommends Ryan McMahon and Yoan Moncada, and Lance Lynn is Jack Carter's favorite White Sox player. To maintain mental health, Mike suggests looking forward to baseball season and taking advantage of sunny days. Mike, Carlos, and the host discuss their weekend plans, like taking naps and working on their morning routines, to get ready for spring break and the changing weather They also plan a listener episode for their next podcast. George Burns and Gracie Allen was one of the funniest duos in the history of American comedy. Both came from vaudeville, where they performed from childhood, honing their skills. When they met and decided to work together, they created an act that is unforgettable. While their earlier shows continued their standup vaudeville act, they gradually transformed their format to create one of the earliest situation comedies.

Comedy writer Jordan Morris (Bubble; Jordan, Jesse Go!) joins to discuss the 1971 British crime film, GET CARTER, starring Michael Caine. This ruthlessly violent drama, directed by Mike Hodges, follows the eponymous gangster Jack Carter (played by Caine) on a quest to avenge his brother's murder. The movie has long been a benchmark in the genre of underworld sleaze, but how does its bleak worldview compare to living in 2022, (not to mention the year 2000 remake starring Sylvester Stallone)? The lively discussion also spans Jordan's early moviegoing in Orange County, formative Jurassic Park obsession, Fuddruckers video games, '80s sex thrillers, smells of the '60s, Paul Schrader, stick shift driving, body horror, and yes... movie theater parking. GET CARTER is currently available to stream on HBO Max.
GUESTS: Andy Wilman, The Grand Tour; Scott Mansell, Driver61; Mat Watson, Carwow; Jack Carter, TikTokABOUT THIS EPISODEIn 2015, Top Gear was one of the most successful British television exports, YouTube seemed young and inexperienced, at just ten years old, and TikTok hadn't even been released.Seven years later, the media landscape looks very different, creating a new challenge for automakers and other providers of mobility: how can they best promote their products and grow or maintain brand awareness in the face of today's rapidly-evolving media? What is the impact of alternative forms of mobility? And how do changes in vehicle technology affect marketing and promotion, as the roar of a combustion engine is replaced by the near-silent acceleration of an electric vehicle, and as the automakers turn their attention from the driver's car to the driverless car? This episode of Ride, produced in collaboration with Motor Industry Communicators Association (MICA), features Andy Wilman (The Grand Tour), Scott Mansell (Driver61), Mat Watson (Carwow), and Jack Carter (TikTok).ABOUT THE GUESTSAndy Wilman - Top Gear and The Grand Tour producer. Part 2 - The Golden Decade. GETTING CARTER author NICK TRIPLOW chats to Paul Burke about Ted Lewis and Brit Noir as No Exit Press reissue 2 of his classic novels Jack Carter's Law and Billy Rags. In this second part we discuss the novels of Ted Lewis from Plender to GBH, the film Yellow Submarine, tv cop show Z Cars and Mary Whitehouse. NICK TRIPLOW GETTING CARTER: Ted Lewis and the Birth of Brit Noir is a meticulously researched and riveting account of the career of a doomed genius. Long-time admirer Nick Triplow has fashioned a thorough, sympathetic and unsparing narrative. Required reading for noirists, this book will enthral and move anyone who finds irresistible the old cocktail of rags to riches to rags. Nick is also the author of the novel Frank's Wild Years.Jack Carter's Law Ted Lewis returns to his greatest invention, a smooth-operating hardcase named Jack Carter, who is about to burn a city down in order to silence an informant... London. The late 1960s. It's Christmas and Jack Carter's the top man in a crime syndicate headed by two brothers, Gerald and Les Fletcher. He's also a worried man. The fact that he's sleeping with Gerald's wife, Audrey, and that they plan on someday running away together with a lot of the brothers' money, doesn't have Jack concerned. Instead it's an informant - one of his own men - that has him losing sleep. The grass has enough knowledge about the firm to not only bring down Gerald and Les but Jack as well. Jack doesn't like his name in the mouth of that sort.Billy Rags It's the 1960s and Billy Cracken is a hard man to keep locked up. An austere and troubled childhood has given way to life as a hardened criminal and now status as one of the most feared prisoners in England. He has been moved from one maximum security prison to the next. Guards and inmates alike fear and begrudgingly respect the powerfully-built Cracken. But a life doing his porridge, even if as a minor celebrity, isn't the one he wants. A girlfriend and a child await Cracken on the outside and he'll stop at nothing to get to them. While plotting his escape he crosses a powerful mobster who vows to make Cracken's life hell, and if nothing else succeeds at making his escape all the more difficult, something the ever-rebellious Cracken defiantly relishes. Billy Rags is a fascinating look into the lives of British inmates serving time in a maximum security prison. Lewis manages once again to tell an exciting, action-filled story with a soul - demonstrated most clearly in a series of brilliant flashbacks to Billy's childhood and in the end conjures a character that will remind readers of both Tom Hardy in Bronson and Lee Marvin in Point Blank.Produced by Junkyard DogMusic courtesy of Southgate and Leigh Crime TimePaul Burke writes for Crime Time, Crime Fiction Lover, NB Magazine and the European Literature Network.

Author NICK TRIPLOW chats to Paul Burke about Ted Lewis and Brit Noir as No Exit Press reissue 2 Lewis novels Jack Carter's Law and Billy Rags, (Plender & GBH came out last year). In this first part Nick talks about his biography of Lewis, the author's background, influences and debut crime novel Jack's Return Home, filmed as Get Carter.GETTING CARTER: The story of Ted Lewis carries historical and cultural resonances for our own troubled times Get Carter are two words to bring a smile of fond recollection to all British film lovers of a certain age. The cinema classic was based on a book called Jack's Return Home, and many commentators agree contemporary British crime writing began with that novel. The influence of both book and film is strong to this day, reflected in the work of David Peace, Jake Arnott and a host of contemporary crime & noir authors. But what of the man who wrote this seminal work? Ted Lewis is one of the most important writers you've never heard of. Born in Manchester in 1940, he grew up in the tough environs of post-war Humberside, attending Hull College of Arts and Crafts before heading for London. His life described a cycle of obscurity to glamour and back to obscurity, followed by death at only 42. He sampled the bright temptations of sixties London while working in advertising, TV and films and he encountered excitement and danger in Soho drinking dens, rubbing shoulders with the 'East End boys' in gangland haunts. He wrote for Z Cars and had some nine books published. Alas, unable to repeat the commercial success of Get Carter, Lewis's life fell apart, his marriage ended and he returned to Humberside and an all too early demise. Getting Carter is a meticulously researched and riveting account of the career of a doomed genius. Long-time admirer Nick Triplow has fashioned a thorough, sympathetic and unsparing narrative. Required reading for noirists, this book will enthral and move anyone who finds irresistible the old cocktail of rags to riches to rags.Nick Triplow is the author of the south London crime novel Frank's Wild Years and the social history books The Women They Left Behind, Distant Water and Pattie Slappers. His acclaimed short story, Face Value, was a winner in the 2015 Northern Crime competition. Originally from London, now living in Barton upon Humber, Nick studied English and Creative Writing at Middlesex University and, in 2007, earned a distinction at Sheffield Hallam University's MA in Creative Writing. Since completing his biography of British noir pioneer, Ted Lewis, Nick has been working on new fiction.Produced by Junkyard DogMusic courtesy of Southgate & LeighCrime TimePaul Burke writes for Crime Time, Crime Fiction Lover, NB Magazine and the European Literature Network.
