Irish Businesses Must Look East as Trump Tariffs Loom

The CEO of the Arab Irish Chamber of Commerce (AICC) is urging Irish businesses battling the uncertainty of "what's next" during the Trump administration to consider expanding their trade strategy to the Arab world - or risk being left behind. AICC CEO Ahmad Younis urged Irish businesses to look to the East on the back of US President Donald Trump's announcement to tax imports of steel and aluminium by 25 percent. Mr. Younis said the US policy overhaul could well be the start of a range of tariffs on EU imports, advising businesses to give serious consideration to reassessing their trade strategy. Mr Younis said: "The Arab world already imports more than 85 per cent of its food supply, much of it from Ireland. Its reliance on imports is enormous, and the opportunities for Irish companies to forge new business alliances in countries like Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Morocco are significant. "Ireland relies heavily on US corporations in the tech and pharmaceutical sectors, yet diversification has been slow," he added. "To safeguard our economic future, we should expand our trade horizons beyond the USA and capitalise on emerging markets with high growth potential." Island of Innovation In 2023, the US imported $54 billion worth of Irish goods, accounting for 28 per cent of all Irish exports. Of that, $36 billion was in pharmaceuticals and chemicals, underscoring Ireland's expertise but also our economic vulnerability. Mr Younis believes Ireland should now capitalise on opportunities in the Arab world, a market of 22 countries and 470 million people: "We're the island of innovation for good reason - and our expertise and commitment to quality in the medical production field is just one example," he said. The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) pharma market, valued at $24 billion in 2023, is projected to grow to $32 billion by 2027, fuelled by rising populations, technological advancements, and increased healthcare investments. Success Stories Irish agri-food businesses are also benefitting from growing ties with the Arab region and are making their mark, says Mr Younis, citing Keogh's Crisps and Monaghan's Silverhill Duck as major success stories. "It's so common now to see Irish products like butter, chocolates and meats on the shelves of Dubai supermarkets," said Mr Younis. "We have a very strong presence in multiple markets across the Middle East and Gulf -- but there's just so much potential for further growth." Despite the geopolitical unrest, Irish exports to the Arab region grew six per cent in the first quarter of 2024 to €731 million and totalled €2 billion in the first nine months. Highlights from January to September 2024 included: United Arab Emirates (UAE): Exports grew by 7 per cent year-on-year to €532.9 million, driven by demand for transport equipment, power-generating machinery, and medical and pharmaceutical goods. Morocco: Trade surged by 38 per cent to €138.7 million, with a strong performance in power-generating machinery, chemical materials, and dairy and bird eggs. Egypt: Exports from January to September were valued at €163M to this region. The main goods exported were pulp & wastepaper, dairy products & bird eggs, as well as fruits and vegetables. "This success isn't a one-off," said Younis. "The resilience of key markets like the UAE and Morocco demonstrates the opportunities available for Irish businesses that are willing to adapt and engage with the region." The AICC has been supporting Irish trade with the east for more than 35 years - and as an Arab living in Ireland for almost 40 years, Mr. Younis says there are more similarities than differences. "I have seen how well-received and respected Irish businesses are in the Middle East and Gulf, and I can see many similarities between the two cultures, which certainly helps when it comes to doing business," Mr Younis concluded.

Consider the complexities of plan design, such as eligibility criteria, employer contributions, and financial savviness of the workforce. Create a process that evaluates all relevant factors, including the cost in order to ensure the best interests of participants are met.Prudence in evaluating record keepers is all about making informed decisions based on expertise and understanding the goals of the plan. Understand the facts and make decisions that would be considered good by similarly situated experts. The planning committee must understand the goals and options available. Advisors shouldn't focus solely on cost in the initial stages of the RFP process. There needs to be a clear understanding of the breadth of options to achieve the plan's goals. Understand the demographics and needs of the workforce to determine what's needed. Proprietary products can be a significant lever for pricing but should be evaluated based on their appropriateness for the plan.“Prudence is about making a decision that is informed by expertise, and if you don't have the expertise, then you should go out and find the expertise, but you need to make decisions that are informed by an appropriate level of expertise given the goals that you have set forth in front of you.” - Alice PalmerConnect with Maggie Younis:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/maggie-younis/ Connect with Alice Palmer:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/alice-palmer-jd-cebs-she-her-b7509524/ Connect with Eric Dyson: Website: https://90northllc.com/Phone: 940-248-4800Email: contact@90northllc.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/401kguy/ The information and content of this podcast is general in nature and is provided solely for educational and informational purposes. "Before Abraham Was Born, I Am." The Significance of Jesus' Claim in John 8

Jesus' Exclusive Claims About His Identity In this week's episode, Nicole explores the profound and polarizing claims made by Jesus regarding His identity. Central to the discussion is the assertion that Jesus is not merely a good teacher or moral guide, but rather God Himself. This claim is pivotal in understanding the conflict that arose between Jesus and the religious leaders of His time. The Nature of Jesus' Claims Throughout the episode, it is emphasized that Jesus made exclusive claims about His identity that set Him apart from other spiritual leaders. For instance, He stated, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." Such declarations are not those of a humble teacher; they are the assertions of someone who claims divine authority and a unique relationship with God. This exclusivity is what makes Jesus' identity so contentious. In John 8:58, Jesus declares, "Before Abraham was born, I am." This statement is particularly significant because it directly links Jesus to the divine name revealed to Moses in Exodus 3:14: "I am who I am." By using this phrase, Jesus positions Himself as eternal and uncreated, further asserting His divinity. The religious leaders, recognizing the implications of this claim, react with hostility, interpreting it as blasphemy—an offense punishable by death. The Polarizing Effect of Jesus' Claims The episode highlights how Jesus' claims created a divide among the people. Many were drawn to His teachings and miracles, while others, particularly the religious authorities, viewed Him as a threat to their established beliefs and practices. Younis notes that Jesus was a polarizing figure; people were either for Him or against Him, with little room for neutrality. This polarization is evident in the way the Jewish leaders respond to His claims, resorting to insults and ultimately seeking to stone Him for what they perceive as blasphemy. What Does This Mean for Me? Jesus' claims are not just theological assertions; they demand a response from those who hear them. Will we take God at His word and accept Jesus as Lord? If you're going to follow Jesus, you have to take him at his claim, and you're going to worship him as God, because that's who he says he is. He has given us His Word, and as we dig into His Word, we are going to discover the truth. And the question is, will we let that truth set us free? Will we say yes to Jesus, surrender our life to him, know that he is the one who can truly save, redeem, and set us free from the oppression of sin? Will we say yes to that? That's the question of John 8. THIS WEEK'S BIBLE STUDY RESOURCES: Sign up for Nicole's newsletter and get regular encouragement straight to your inbox: https://nicoleunice.com/realtalk/ Help! Then Katie talks to Rami Younis, a Palestinian writer, journalist, activist and co-director of "Lyd," a science fiction documentary he co-directed about the once-thriving Palestinian city of Lyd. Rami reacts to Israel's recent decision to ban the film. Maura Finkelstein is a writer, ethnographer, and associate professor of anthropology. She is the author of The Archive of Loss: Lively Ruination in Mill Land Mumbai, published by Duke University Press in 2019. Her writing has also been published in Anthological Quarterly, City and Society, Cultural Anthropology, Anthropology Now, Post45, Electric Literature, Allegra Lab, Red Pepper Magazine, The Markaz Review, the Scottish Left Review, Mondoweiss, and Al Jazeera. She has been nominated for a Pushcart (2021), was a finalist for the Witness literary award (2022), was a Tin House Scholar (2023), and was recently the recipient of the 2024 New Directions Award from the General Anthropology Division (GAD) of the American Anthropological Association. Rami Younis is a Palestinian filmmaker, writer, journalist and activist from Lyd. He was a 2019-20 Fellow at the Harvard Divinity School. As a journalist, he mainly wrote for the online magazine +972 and served as both writer and editor of its Hebrew sister site, “local call”, a journalistic project he co-founded, designed to challenge Israeli mainstream journalism outlets. Rami served as a parliamentary consultant and media spokesperson for Palestinian member of Knesset (Israeli parliament) Haneen Zoabi. Rami is also co-founder and manager of the first ever “Palestine Music Expo”: an event that connects local Palestinian music scene to the world wide industry. Younis was the host of the Arabic-language daily news show, “On the Other Hand." Lyd is a feature-length, sci-fi documentary that shares multiple pasts, presents, and futures of the city of Lyd in Palestine/Israel. From the perspective of the city herself, voiced by Palestinian actress Maisa Abd Elhadi, the viewer is guided through the lifespan of a five-thousand-year-old city and its residents. Lyd was once a thriving Palestinian city with a rich history. In 636AD, It was even considered the first capital of Palestine. When the State of Israel was founded in 1948, Lyd became an Israeli city, and in the process, hundreds of Lyd's Palestinian residents were massacred by Israeli forces, and most of the city's 50,000 Palestinian residents were exiled. Today, the city has a Jewish Israeli majority and a Palestinian minority and is disinvested and divided by racism and violence. For Palestinians, Lyd's story is a painful and tragic fall from grace, which is why the film dares to ask the question: what would the city be like had the Israeli occupation of Lyd never happened? **Please support The Katie Halper Show ** For bonus content, exclusive interviews, to support independent media & to help make this program possible, please join us on Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/thekatiehalpershow Get your Katie Halper Show Merch here! https://katiehalper.myspreadshop.com/all Follow Katie on Twitter: @kthalps

How surgeons remotely assisted their colleagues in Gaza

Seven months of brutal Israeli genocide in Gaza have obliterated the local healthcare system, as the IDF has repeatedly targeted and destroyed hospitals and clinics in its military operations. When healthcare infrastructure was still standing, Gaza's healthcare workers faced the challenge of treating grave injuries requiring specialist care. To get around this issue, surgeons around the world have remotely coached their colleagues in Gaza, using messaging services like Whatsapp to lend their expertise in the treatment of particularly severe injuries. Surgeons Osaid Alser and Simon Fitzgerald join The Marc Steiner Show to discuss their experience offering this remote support to their colleagues at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis—where shortly after this recording, mass graves containing hundreds of bodies of Palestinians executed by the IDF were found.Studio Production: Cameron GranadinoPost-Production: Alina NehlichHelp us continue producing The Marc Steiner Show by following us and becoming a monthly sustainer.Donate: https://therealnews.com/donate-pod-mssSign up for our newsletter: https://therealnews.com/nl-pod-stLike us on Facebook: https://facebook.com/therealnewsFollow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/therealnews Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-marc-steiner-show--4661751/support.
