Vinnie Brezinsky from Huey and Bax and Nicholas Pepin of Pop Culture Roulette join me live to watch some ‘80s Kmart Christmas commercials! The store that would become Kmart was founded by SS Kresge after he met Frank Woolworth. Inspired by his stores, Kresge invested in a five-and-dime which did well enough for him to open a store in Detroit. In 1912 he incorporated in Delaware with 85 stores. In January 1962 he opened the first Kmart, and in 1981, the 2000th Kmart was open.Subsequently, 1985 saw Kmart convert one of its in-store cafeterias into a Little Caesar's. Throughout the ‘80s they were the 2nd largest retailer after Sears until 1990 when Walmart passed them. These  commercials   show a variety of products from the ‘80s, including phones and clothes. There's even an ad for Christmas portraits!Catchy jingles? Check. Cheesy, saccharine messages? Of course.  Comic strip  shenanigans? Definitely! What's up, dudes? “Gremlins” is a classic holiday horror, made better by Jerry Goldsmith's score and the killer hits of Michael Sembello and Peter Gabriel. Kevin Williams from ‘Tis the Soundtrack joins me to really dig into a couple of cues from the “Gremlins” score and dish about music theory of it all as well.We first get into the mega madness with the Sembello track. Played during the bar scene, the uptempo dance song set the stage for the “Maniac”-like antics of the dancing green creature. The film also features a track by Quarterflash and Darlene Love's epically classic “Christmas.”Goldsmith's penchant for atonality shines forth in the frantic cue ‘No Santa Claus.' The Stravinsky-esque eighths are composed of dueling tritones E-Bb and D-Ab and immediately transition to alternating bars of 5/8 and 7/8. Subsequently, all this segues quite nicely into held sonorities overlaid with “Silent Night” as Kate begins her tale of holiday woe. Talk about harmonization!Altered mystic chord? Check. Catchy mogwai theme? Got it. Synthesizer? Yes, but only if there's 7 different types! So grab your Roland Jupiter-6, join the orchestra, and play along to this episode all about the “Gremlins” score and soundtrack!‘Tis the SoundtrackYouTube: @TisTheSoundtrackIG:  @tisthesoundtrackNicolas Delage solving the mystery of Gizmo's voice!Be sure to check out the brilliant publication of Goldsmith's work by Chris Siddall, which made this analysis possible. Give us a buzz! Behind the Scenes of Live Image Optimization   Host: Danny McMillan Guests: Dorian, Sim, Andri   This MIM Live session explores image optimisation and its impact on product visibility and customer engagement. Danny McMillan and the team work with Dorian to refine visual assets in real-time, showcasing the iterative process of creating compelling e-commerce imagery. Key Highlights: 1. Hydrogen Peroxide and Product Messaging The discussion emphasizes the importance of ingredient transparency in product imagery, suggesting that highlighting ingredients like hydrogen peroxide can build trust and credibility. Andri highlights the challenge of balancing safety with performance claims, questioning whether to emphasize less invasive formulas or scientific effectiveness. Dorian agrees on the need for clarity, stating that a certain formula can be featured in the design to connect with the target audience. 2. Results-Oriented Copywriting Sim and the team discuss how timelines influence buyer decisions, emphasising that claims like “8x shades whiter” need a defined timeframe to increase credibility. Catchy phrasing like "Fast results in just 14 days" emerged as a strong contender, with Andri explaining, "14 days sounds shorter and less intimidating than two weeks—it's worth testing." 3. Award-Winning Trust Signals Integrating awards or certifications into packaging was explored. Andri suggested, “Adding ‘Award-Winning Formula' subtly elevates the product, making competitors look less trustworthy.” Danny adds, "It's about stating the obvious but making it compelling. Why does the formula win awards? That's the narrative buyers want." 4. Aesthetic Tweaks and Visual Testing A debate arose over using before-and-after images, with concerns about aesthetics and customer perception. Danny noted, "Yellow teeth might show results but could deter initial impressions." Dorian highlighted the squint test, zooming out to assess prominent elements like colors and text. Key points included: Bright colors (e.g., reds or blues) often outperform pastels. Highlighting "Award-Winning" in bold, contrasting circles can attract attention while staying professional. 5. Iteration Through Data The team emphasised the importance of testing hypotheses. As Dorian stated, "The moment I feel confident with a design is when I'm ready to spend $100 to test it on ProductPinion or similar platforms." The session concluded with multiple design iterations, balancing brand presence, messaging clarity, and aesthetic appeal. Actionable Takeaways: Test visual prominence: Verify bold claims like "Award-Winning" align with customer expectations. Iterate designs with context: Use competition-aware adjustments like standout colors or trust signals. Keep numbers clean and clear: Short timelines and concise claims enhance psychological impact. “Raise your hands if you’re sure!” Do you remember the advertisement? Catchy slogan, but for some who are “perspirationally” challenged, placing one’s hope in an deodorant is going to take more than just a catchy slogan and name. It’s one thing to have an anti-perspirant leave you pitted, it’s an entirely different thing to have assurance of an authentic salvation. The Scriptures reveal the beautiful doctrine of the assurance of our salvation. In other words, if God saves a person, can that salvation be lost? The absolute answer is “no”; yet, not everyone who claims salvation has actually been saved. Our passage this morning is really the heart of the application of the great book of Hebrews and it comes with a warning not to leave the faith and the promise of a God who will never lose someone who is authentically His. Today we will begin a two-week look at this passage that dives deeply into the beautiful doctrine of the assurance of our salvation.

What happens when catchy tunes mask unsettling and problematic lyrics? Join Matt and Samer for a candid and thought-provoking journey through music history as we uncover the dark realities behind some of the most popular songs. We start with the Black Eyed Peas' "Let's Get It Started," originally rife with offensive language, only to be cleaned up thanks to the NBA's intervention. We then discuss Cher's "Half-Breed," reflecting on her series of similarly themed songs and how they shine a light on evolving societal standards and the need for mindful consumption of music. In this episode, we tackle the dissonance between melody and message by dissecting Sublime's "Wrong Way" and Benny Mardones' "Into the Night." Catchy, yes, but these tracks come with disturbing themes that raise serious ethical questions. Our exploration doesn't stop there; we also critique Genesis' "Illegal Alien" for its outdated portrayal of Mexican stereotypes and take a closer look at the flirtatious yet potentially coercive undertones of the holiday classic "Baby, It's Cold Outside." Through modern reinterpretations, we examine how the song's lyrics resonate—or don't—in today's context.Rounding off our discussion, we analyze the cultural insensitivity and lack of research that plagued pre-internet era songs like Band-Aid's "Do They Know It's Christmas?" and George Jones' "The Poor Chinee." Misguided intentions and offensive stereotypes are laid bare, prompting us to question the responsibilities of artists and platforms in handling such content today. https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/cancel-these-songs/pl.u-8dqGjTZrAMJ1. In this podcast, we dive into the new concept of OCR 2.0 - the future of OCR with LLMs. We explore how this new approach addresses the limitations of traditional OCR by introducing a unified, versatile system capable of understanding various visual languages. We discuss the innovative GOT (General OCR Theory) model, which utilizes a smaller, more efficient language model. The podcast highlights GOT's impressive performance across multiple benchmarks, its ability to handle real-world challenges, and its capacity to preserve complex document structures. We also examine the potential implications of OCR 2.0 for future human-computer interactions and visual information processing across diverse fields. Key Points Traditional OCR vs. OCR 2.0 Current OCR limitations (multi-step process, prone to errors) OCR 2.0: A unified, end-to-end approach Principles of OCR 2.0 End-to-end processing Low cost and accessibility Versatility in recognizing various visual languages GOT (General OCR Theory) Model Uses a smaller, more efficient language model (Quinn) Trained in diverse visual languages (text, math formulas, sheet music, etc.) Training Innovations Data engines for different visual languages E.g. LaTeX for mathematical formulas Performance and Capabilities State-of-the-art results on standard OCR benchmarks Outperforms larger models in some tests Handles real-world challenges (blurry images, odd angles, different lighting) Advanced Features Formatted document OCR (preserving structure and layout) Fine-grained OCR (precise text selection) Generalization to untrained languages This episode was generated using Google Notebook LM, drawing insights from the paper "General OCR Theory: Towards OCR-2.0 via a Unified End-to-end Model". Stay ahead in your AI journey with Bot Nirvana AI Mastermind. Podcast Transcript: All right, so we're diving into the future of OCR today. Really interesting stuff. Yeah, and you know how sometimes you just gain a document, you just want the text, you don't really think twice about it. Right, right. But this paper, General OCR Theory, towards OCR 2.0 via a unified end-to-end model. Catchy title. I know, right? But it's not just the title, they're proposing this whole new way of thinking about OCR. OCR 2.0 as they call it. Exactly, it's not just about text anymore. Yeah, it's really about understanding any kind of visual information, like humans do. So much bigger. It's a really ambitious goal. Okay, so before we get ahead of ourselves, let's back up for a second. Okay. How does traditional OCR even work? Like when you and I scan a document, what's actually going on? Well, it's kind of like, imagine an assembly line, right? First, the system has to figure out where on the page the actual text is. Find it. Right, isolate it. Then it crops those bits out. Okay. And then it tries to recognize the individual letters and words. So it's like a multi-step? Yeah, it's a whole process. And we've all been there, right? When one of those steps goes wrong. Oh, tell me about it. And you get that OCR output that's just… Gibberish, told gibberish. The worst. And the paper really digs into this. They're saying that whole assembly line approach, it's not just prone to errors, it's just clunky. Yeah, very inefficient. Like different fonts can throw it off. And write. Different languages, forget it. Oh yeah, if it's not basic printed text, OCR 1.0 really struggles. It's like it doesn't understand the context. Yeah, exactly. It's treating information like it's just a bunch of isolated letters, instead of seeing the bigger picture, you know, the relationships between them. It doesn't get the human element of it. It's missing that human touch, that understanding of how we visually organize information. And that's a problem. A big one. Especially now, when we're just like drowning in visual information everywhere you look. It's true, we need something way more powerful than what we have now. We need a serious upgrade. Enter OCR 2.0. That's what they're proposing, yeah. So what's the magic formula? What makes it so different from what we're used to? Well, the paper lays out three main principles for OCR 2.0. Okay. First, it has to be end to end. It needs to be… And to end. Low cost, accessible. Got it. And most importantly, it needs to be versatile. Versatile, that's a good one. So okay, let's break it down end to end. Does that mean ditching that whole assembly line thing we were talking about? Exactly, yeah. Instead of all those separate steps, OCR 2.0, they're saying it should be one unified model. Okay. One model that can handle the entire process. So much simpler. And much more efficient. Okay, that makes sense. And easier to use, which is key. And then low cost, I mean. Oh, absolutely. That's got to be a priority. We want this to be accessible to everyone, not just… Sure. You know. Right, not just companies with tons of resources. Exactly. And the researchers were really clever about this. Yeah. They actually chose to use a smaller, more efficient language model. Oh, really? Yeah, they called it Quinn and… Instead of one of the massive ones that's been in the news. Exactly. And they proved that you don't need this giant energy guzzling model to get really impressive results with OCR. So efficient and powerful. I like it. That's the goal. But versatile. That's the part that always gets me thinking because… It's where things get really interesting. Yeah, we're not even just talking about recognizing text anymore. No, it's about recognizing any kind of… Visual information. Visual information that humans create, right? Yeah. Like, think about it. Math formulas, diagrams, even something like sheet music. Hold on. Sheet music. Like actually reading music. Yeah. And it's a really good example of how different this is. Okay. Because music, it's not just about recognizing the notes themselves. Right. It's about understanding the timing, the rhythm. So languid. How those symbols all relate to each other. It's a whole system. That's wild. Okay, so how do they even begin to teach a machine to do that? Well, they got really creative with the training data. Okay. Instead of just feeding it like raw text and images, they built these data engines to teach JART different visual languages. Data engines. That sounds intense. Yeah, it's basically like, imagine for the sheet music they used, let me see, it's called humdrum kern. Okay. And essentially what that does is it turns musical notation into code. Oh, interesting. So Johnny T learned to connect those visual symbols to their actual musical meaning. So it's learning the language. Exactly. That's incredible, but sheet music's just one example, right? What other kind of crazy stuff did they throw at this thing? Oh, they really tried everything. Math formulas, those are always fun. I bet. Molecular formula, even simple geometric shapes, squares and circles. Really? Yeah, they used all sorts of tricks to represent these visual elements as code. So GOT could understand it. Exactly. Like for the math formulas, they used a language called latex. Have you heard of that one? Yeah, yeah, that's how a lot of scientists and mathematicians, they use that to write equations. Exactly. It's how they write it so computers can understand it. It's like the code of math. Exactly. And so by training GOT on latex, they weren't just teaching it to recognize what a formula looks like. Right, right. They were teaching it the underlying structure, like the grammar of math itself. Okay, now that is really cool. Yeah, and they found that GOT could actually generalize this knowledge. It could even recognize elements of formulas that it had never seen before. No way. It was like it was starting to understand the language of math, which is pretty incredible when you think about it. Yeah, that's wild. Okay, so we've got this model. It can recognize text. It can recognize all these other complex visual languages. We're getting somewhere. But how does it actually perform? Like does it actually live up to the hype? So this is it, huh? We've got this super OCR model that's been trained on everything but the kitchen sink. Time to put it to the test. We went through the ringer. Yeah. What did they even start with? Well, the classics, right? Plain document OCR, PDFs, articles, that kind of thing. Basic but important. Exactly. And they tested it in both English and Chinese just to see how well-rounded it was. And drumroll, how to do? Crushed it. Absolutely crushed it. No way. State-of-the-art performance on all the standard document OCR benchmarks. That's amazing. Oh, and here's the really interesting part. It actually outperformed some much larger, more complex models in their tests. So it's efficient and it's powerful. That's a winning combo. Exactly. It shows you don't always have to go bigger to get better results. Okay, that's awesome. But what about real-world stuff? You know, the messy stuff. Oh, they thought of that. Like trying to read a sign with a weird font or a crumpled-up napkin with handwriting on it? Yep. All that. They have these data sets specifically designed to trip up OCR systems with blurry images, weird angles, different lighting. The stuff nightmares are made of. Right. And GOT handled it all like a champ. It was really impressive. Okay, so this isn't just some theoretical thing. It actually works. It's the real deal. I'm sold. But there was another thing they mentioned, something about formatted document OCR. What is that exactly? That's where things get really elegance. The formatted documents, it's not just about recognizing the words. Right. It's about understanding the structure of a document. Okay, like the headings and bullet points? Exactly. Tables, the whole nine yards. It's about preserving the way information is organized. So it's like imagine being able to convert a complex PDF into a perfectly formatted word doc automatically. Precisely. That's the dream, right? I would save me so many hours of my life. Oh, tell me about it. No more reformatting everything manually. Did GOT actually managed to do that? It did. And it wasn't just a fluke. The researchers found that GOT was consistently able to preserve document structure, which really shows that this OCR 2.0 approach, it can understand information hierarchy in a way that we just haven't seen before. That's a game changer. Okay, before I forget, we got to talk about that fine grained OCR thing. They mentioned. Yes, that's where it gets really precise. It sounds like you have microscopic control over the text. Like you're telling it exactly what to read. Yeah. It's like having a laser pointer for text. You can say, read the text in that green box over there, or read the text between these coordinates on the image. That is wild. And how accurate is it when you get that specific? It was surprisingly accurate, even at that level of granularity. That's amazing. And they didn't even have to specifically train it for every little thing. Well, that's this part. They actually found that GOT could sometimes recognize text in languages they hadn't even trained it on. What? Are you serious? Yeah. It's because it had encountered similar characters in different contexts, so it was able to make educated guesses. So it's learning. It's actually learning. Exactly. It's not just pattern matching anymore. It's actually generalizing its knowledge. Okay, so big picture here. Is OCR 2.0 the real deal, or is this just hype? I think the results speak for themselves. This isn't just a minor upgrade. This is a fundamental shift in how we think about extracting meaning from images. GOT proves that this OCR 2.0 approach, it's not just a pipe dream. It has incredible potential to change everything. Yeah, it really feels like we're moving beyond just digitizing stuff. You know, it's like machines are actually starting to understand what they're seeing. Exactly. It's a whole new era of human-computer interaction. And if GOT can already handle sheet music and geometric shapes and complex document formatting, I mean, the possibilities are, it's kind of mind-blowing. It really makes you wonder what other fields are on the verge of their own 2.0 transformations. That's a great question, one to ponder. But for now, this has been an incredible deep dive into the future of OCR. Thanks for joining me. And until next time, keep those minds curious.

Most of us find joy in melodies and rhythms. Catchy tunes we hear at the coffee shop, in the mall, or even muzak in the elevator can get stuck in our heads. That's what happened to Anya. Except, music did not bring her joy; it felt like torture. When songs got stuck in Anya's head, they would not stop; the music was loud, pounding incessantly, and it left her bewildered, exhausted, and desperate for a cure. Her condition stumped doctors for years. Then, hope. Via a new kind of brain surgery, pioneered, in part, here in Canada.Content warning: Today's episode talks about suicide ideation. Beloved mindfulness teacher, best-selling author, and longtime Buddhist practitioner Susan Kaiser Greenlanddraws from science, psychology, Buddhism, wisdom traditions, and personal stories to offer a view of “real-world enlightenment”—where we shift from a narrow survival-driven frame of mind to one that is grounded and as vast as the sky. When we cultivate this expansive worldview from the inside out, we become more resilient, and we are able to build a kinder and more resilient world. To help us do this, she offers valuable methods and  takeaways that allow you to apply these life-changing universal themes every day. They include:Practical ways to recognize the basic goodness within and around you by tapping into sensory pleasures like music or nature.Robust tools to manage stress and develop attention by focusing on a sight, sound, image, word, or phrase.Catchy slogans that promote emotional balance when you feel overwhelmed, like “right now, I'm okay,” “drop the baggage,” or “don't play the scene before you get there.”Accessible meditation methods to experience life with greater equanimity by slowing down your thinking process to heighten awareness of the natural movement of your mind.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

If you don't know how to solve them and you ask, everyone will say that we listen to the boss. 4th Meaning: (On Top of something) 还有最后一个意思就是它可以表示一个。。。说“把这个盒子放在柜子上头”或者是说“在椅子上头坐着一只小猫”。。都可以。。(Hái yǒu zuìhòu yīgè yìsi jiùshì tā kěyǐ biǎoshì yīgè... Shuō “bǎ zhège hézi fàng zài guìzi shàngtou” huòzhě shì shuō “zài yǐzi shàngtou zuòzhe yī zhǐ xiǎo māo”.. Dōu kěyǐ.) The last meaning is that it can mean a... If you've been feeling wound up, worn down, snowed under or bowled over this is the show for you so grab your stressed-out besties and your bedraggled partners, and join me as I travel all over Ireland and beyond and we'll un-wreck our heads and destress our lives together. Tickets for those also go on sale next Friday 24th May so grab them while you can! You can also find me at Electric Picnic on Aug 17th too!Back to The Mind Full Podcast and in this brand-new episode we ask the question ‘Does Gratitude Really Work?'We hear a lot about gratitude these days. Catchy slogans like “Attitude of Gratitude” are plastered over mugs, tea towels and t-shirts the world over. But is there real science behind it and, if so, just what is the correct way to practice it so that we see real tangible benefits? Well, one incredible lady who can truly vouch for its effectiveness is this week's special guest. I am so happy to bring you this wonderful conversation with an amazing lady at the top of her game! Angela Scanlon has recently taken over from Graham Norton at Virgin Radio in the UK presenting her own weekend show, has been a regular face on RTÉ, BBC and Channel 4 TV over the last ten years, appearing in shows like BBC's One Show, Robot Wars, Your Home Made Perfect and Strictly Come Dancing.Heavily involved in fashion from an early age, she has fronted campaigns for the likes of Louis Vuitton and has written a bestselling book Joyrider - How Gratitude Can Get You the Life You Really Want. And it's that gratitude we want to zone in on in this episode. Angela speaks to me from her UK home and talks about how insecurity and imposter syndrome had her struggling badly at a time when everyone thought she was living the perfect life. Learn how her finding gratitude shaped how she perceives the world and how her new star role on radio has come just at the right time. But what about the all-important science of gratitude? Well, we have an incredible scientific heavy-hitter to unpack the science stuff and get you set up for real, tangible brain-boosting benefits! Joining me to uncover and explain the fascinating neuroscience of gratitude is medical doctor, psychologist, behavioral neuroscientist and neurotechnology expert Dr. Michael Keane! Nobody knows the brain like Michael and his easy going and accessible approach will be just what you need to unlock the true power of a grateful mindset. What an episode to end the series on!Thank you all SO much for listening! Stay tuned for Season 2 coming real soon and watch out for lots of fun stuff coming over the next weeks and months too!
