Some people think Mike Hodges' 1980 Flash Gordon movie is cheesy trash and hate it; others think it's over-the-top hilarious and enjoy it. But some weirdos truly LOVE this exercise in tonal whiplash, and your humble hosts are two such men. We'll talk about the film as an adaptation of both the original Alex Raymond source material and the Buster Crabbe serials, and how it proudly defies Star Wars' revisionist sci-fi aesthetic. But we'll also try to dig underneath the spectacle to expose the genuinely rousing humanistic heroism at this movie's core. Plus: more beloved character actors than you'll know what to do with!Want to hear the rest? Support us at patreon.com/ironageofcomics !

Pathetic Earthlings, who can save you now?Well, there might be one guy...Flash Gordon has been on our screens for almost 90 years, and the story of the dashing all-American hero, his companions, and his battles against Ming the Merciless laid the groundwork for modern sci-fi, influencing everything from Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek and Doctor Who.From his humble comic strip roots, Flash's adventures were perfect for a modern film adaptation, and legendary film mogul Dino De Laurentiis was adamant he knew what he wanted for his Flash Gordon; a visual feast, a lavish production, a playful tone and his friend Danilo Donati as the production and costume designer. From its colourful costumes to its campy dialogue, Flash Gordon is a spectacle that has transcended time, and cinema owes Flash a huge debt of gratitude, but it was not an easy movie to make. Its original director Nicolas Roeg ended up leaving after a year, and Mike Hodges stepped up, but with very little control over what you see on screen. Queen's iconic soundtrack for Flash Gordon was groundbreaking, blending rock music with film scoring in a way that had never been done before. Flash Gordon remains a cult classic, influencing generations of filmmakers and fans, and continues to be celebrated for its unique charm and creativity. Despite the issues behind the scenes, and the behaviour of their leading man, Flash Gordon has an undeniable charm that has kept it alive in the hearts of fans worldwide. It alive? Sorry, I meant... At the beginning of his Cincinnati Bengals career, linebacker Logan Wilson was connected with the new Bengals defensive coordinator, Al Golden. Golden, the Bengals' linebackers coach at the time, scouted and worked out Wilson before the 2020 NFL Draft when the Bengals selected the Wyoming product in the third round with the 65th pick. After two starting assignments as a rookie, Wilson was named the starting middle linebacker heading into his second season. He played a significant role in the team's playoff wins, becoming AFC Champions and earning a spot in the Super Bowl. With Golden leaving after the Super Bowl for the defensive coordinator position at the University of Notre Dame, Wilson had to adapt to a new linebackers coach. Now, the coach who played a major role in his joining the Bengals has Wilson ecstatic about his return as defensive coordinator. In this episode of In The Trenches with Dave Lapham, presented by First Star Logistics, Logan Wilson talks about his excitement about Al Golden's return, the latest on how his rehab is going, and new linebackers coach Mike Hodges.

Police responded to a medical call and discovered the man's body between two cars, wearing only undergarments with blood on him. Initially treated as suspicious, investigation concluded it was not a crime. Surveillance footage indicated he collided with a guardrail, fell from his wheelchair, and succumbed to his injuries. The cold weather likely exacerbated the situation. The Medical Examiner's Office will determine the cause of death. STORY 2: Mulberry Cityhood Bill Heads To Gov. Kemp's Desk. What Happens Now? The state House passed Senate Bill 333, sending it to Gov. Brian Kemp for approval. The bill would allow residents in northeastern Gwinnett County to vote on creating the city of Mulberry in May. Proposed without property taxes, Mulberry would be Gwinnett's 17th municipality, potentially becoming its largest by area and second largest by population. The city would have a five-member council, electing a mayor internally. Funding would come from fees rather than property taxes. While supported by House Majority Leader Chuck Efstration, Democrats argued for further review before sending it to voters. Developed by a French research team led by Professor Bertrand Simon, the lens, dubbed the "spiral diopter," functions similarly to progressive lenses but without typical distortions. Its spiral design creates multiple points of focus, providing clear vision at various depths. This innovation could benefit individuals with cataracts or age-related vision issues. Additionally, the lens's potential applications extend to contact lenses, intraocular implants, and miniaturized imaging systems. The lens's creation involved combining intuitive design with advanced fabrication techniques, and ongoing research aims to further understand its optical properties and real-world performance.   Break 3:    STORY 6: Georgia lawmakers, environmentalists blast tax break plan to expand crypto-mining in state A proposed bill in Georgia, dubbed the "Blockchain Basics Act," aimed at supporting the state's burgeoning Bitcoin-mining industry, has sparked controversy due to concerns over noise pollution, energy, and water usage. Sponsored by Rep. Scott Hilton, the bill would grant tax breaks to crypto mining companies and prevent local officials from imposing noise regulations on mining centers. While proponents argue for rural economic development and job creation, opponents, including lawmakers from both parties and environmentalists, raise concerns about the impact on local communities and the environment. Additionally, the bill's provision to bar treating cryptocurrency as securities raises concerns about investor protection and fraud investigation. The bill is undergoing debate, with stakeholders urging careful consideration of its implications. STORY 7: Georgia Senate approves bill that aims to restrict the ways workers can form unions The Georgia Senate passed Senate Bill 362, supported by Gov. Brian Kemp, requiring businesses to hold secret ballot elections before recognizing labor unions if they want to receive state incentives. The bill, sponsored by Sen. Mike Hodges, aims to prevent unions from using less formal methods like card checks for unionization. Proponents argue that secret ballots protect workers from intimidation and pressure, while opponents, including Democratic senators, argue that such ballots delay negotiations and allow employers to use intimidation tactics. Republicans maintain that the bill aligns with Arizona's precedent and does not violate national labor law, while Democrats fear it could lead to costly legal battles.   We'll have final thoughts after this.   Break 4: INGLES 7  Signoff – Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Gwinnett Daily Post podcast. Directed by Mike Hodges, Flash Gordon is the space opera superhero film based on the King Features comic strip of the same name created by Alex Raymond. Pathetic Earthings Luke and Jae take the journey back to 1980 to review this cult classic. Although NASA scientists are claiming the unexpected eclipse and strange "hot hail" are nothing to worry about, Dr. Hans Zarkov (Topol) knows better, and takes football star Flash Gordon (Sam Jones) and travel agent Dale Arden (Melody Anderson) with him into space to rectify things. They land on planet Mongo, where the despot Ming the Merciless (Max von Sydow) is attacking Earth out of pure boredom. With the help of a race of Hawkmen, Flash and the gang struggle to save their home planet.

Here at 1001 by 1, we're picking up exactly where we left off: talking about Mike Hodges iconic British crime film “Get Carter” starring Michael Caine. The crew dissect the film from all angles: the treatment of female characters, when you did not have to be “ripped” to have your shirt off as an actor, the editing/score, the source material, and so much more. Also, this week Britt recommends “Cyberpunk Edgerunners” (currently on Netflix), Joey recommends “The Prestige” (available to rent on all major platforms), and Adam recommends “Croupier” (on Netflix, Prime, Kanopy, and/or VUDU). On the last Empire Podcast of the year, we have something of a The Prestige reunion, which is nice. First, Christian Bale, star of The Pale Blue Eye, talks to Chris Hewitt about being mistaken for Gareth Bale, and his experiences working with directors on multiple occasions, including Adam McKay, Scott Cooper, and Terrence Malick. Then Hugh Jackman, Golden Globe-nominated star of The Son (which opens here in February), talks to Amon Warmann about his experiences on that movie, working with Anthony Hopkins for a day, and why he's about to play Wolverine again in Deadpool 3. Then, Kate Hudson and Jessica Henwick, neither of whom were in The Prestige, more than make up for it by having a freewheeling and very funny chat with Chris about their new movie Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, life with an assistant, British sitcoms, and John Carpenter and Kurt Russell. And if that weren't enough, Chris is then joined in the podbooth by James Dyer and Helen O'Hara (who's not in the podbooth, which is why there's some slight distortion on her mic this week. Hopefully it won't spoil your listening experience.) for a fun episode in which they discuss their Christmas movie traditions, who would win between John McClane and Kevin McCallister; talk about the week's movie news, including Avatar: The Way Of Water's box office, the Barbie trailer, and the sad passing of Mike Hodges; and review Corsage, Glass Onion, and The Pale Blue Eye. We're taking a little break but are back on January 13, folks, so have a great Christmas if you celebrate, a fantastic holiday season if you don't, and an amazing start to 2023. Thanks so much for listening and supporting our nonsense throughout the year. Here's to more!

Written by Griff Rhys Jones and Mel Smith, the film tells the tale of a quartet of less-than-bright intergalactic travelers who crash land on Earth. The film lampoons the idea that we of Earth may be visited by beings from outer space only to find that they're not as enlightened as we'd fancy them to be.Cecil Trachenburg and Jon Spira join Mike to laud the film while Griff Rhys Jones discusses how disappointing he found the experience.

Using technology to get a second chance at life is one of the  great themes of sci fi, from Frankenstein to Charly to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. But sometimes it's the movies themselves that need a second chance!  Tonight we take a look at two films that came with great pedigrees, but somehow failed to find their audience, and ask if they deserve another shot!  First up is George Segal in Micchael Chrichton's The Terminal Man, followed by Matt Damon in Alexander Payne's Downsizing!

Comedy writer Jordan Morris (Bubble; Jordan, Jesse Go!) joins to discuss the 1971 British crime film, GET CARTER, starring Michael Caine. This ruthlessly violent drama, directed by Mike Hodges, follows the eponymous gangster Jack Carter (played by Caine) on a quest to avenge his brother's murder. The movie has long been a benchmark in the genre of underworld sleaze, but how does its bleak worldview compare to living in 2022, (not to mention the year 2000 remake starring Sylvester Stallone)? The lively discussion also spans Jordan's early moviegoing in Orange County, formative Jurassic Park obsession, Fuddruckers video games, '80s sex thrillers, smells of the '60s, Paul Schrader, stick shift driving, body horror, and yes... movie theater parking. GET CARTER is currently available to stream on HBO Max.

he film starring Michael Caine was adapted from a 1970 Ted Lewis novel set in an underworld of gangsters and teenage pornography. Mike Hodges, Nick Triplow, Pamela Hutchinson and John Gray talk with Matthew Sweet about the influence of the book and re-watch the film, which has just been restored in 4k and returns to UK cinemas this summer. Originally set in Scunthorpe, Lewis' novel Jack's Return Home was relocated to Newcastle/Gateshead for the film which Mike Hodges adapted and directed. Jack's Return Home (1970) was published in 1971 as Carter and later re-published as Get Carter after the film was made. "Carter! That's my name!" And Hodges! That's his name! Get Carter, the 1971 film that marked Mike Hodges' directorial debut on the big screen and which launched a career that would take in the likes of Flash Gordon and Croupier, has been re-released and remastered (in glorious 4K) by the BFI. It looks and sounds better than ever, so now you can bask in the bleakness of this revenge thriller, which sees Michael Caine go to Newcastle and wreak havoc. Hodges is now 89, and retired from filmmaking, but he took time out to have a chat with Chris Hewitt in which they talk about the enduring appeal of Get Carter, and run through some of the more eclectic entries in Hodges' career. It's a candid and insightful chat with one of Britain's greatest filmmakers, and we hope you enjoy.

Flash Gordon, the character, was created back in the 1930's specifically as a space opera.  Space opera is the old science fiction that takes place in outer space but doesn't necessarily follow the knowledge behind the science.  George Lucas brought it all back in the 1970's with STAR WARS (1977).  With it being a huge subgenre once more, in 1980 the film FLASH GORDON as the next big budget film to set off a franchise. New York Jets quarterback Flash Gordon (Sam J. Jones), during space Emperor Ming's (Max von Sydow) invasion of Earth, flies a space rocket with travel agent Dale Arden (Melody Anderson) and scientist Hans Zarkov (Topol) to Ming's palace where they are captured.  With the help of Princess Aura (Ornella Muti) and others, Flash escapes and tries to start an intergalactic rebellion to free all those oppressed by Ming. Produced by Dino De Laurentiis, directed by Mike Hodges, and written by Lorenzo Semple, Jr., based off Alex Raymond's iconic character, the movie gained much press as the band Queen joined as the main composer along with Howard Blake.  Released world wide, the film's retro look and strange story gained it mediocre reviews.  Yet years later fans found the film and gave it the rightful cult following that it has.  Your co-hosts discuss this wonderful film.
