Reel Britannia podcast - a very British podcast about very British movies...with just a hint of professionalism. Scott and Steven are joined this week by their dear friend Mark, host of The Good, The Bad and The Odd podcast, to discuss an overlooked movie from 1972 starring Oliver Reed, Edward Woodward, Ian McShane, Frank Finlay, Freddie Jones and Jill St John. Revenge, car chases, prison escapes...what more you could ask for?   Sitting Target (1972) A killer has one more victim on his hit list – his faithless wife! Oliver Reed snarls and seethes his way through a brute-force 70's crime thriller in the tradition of Get Carter. Douglas Hickox, who would go on to helm such memorable films as Theatre of Blood and Zulu Dawn, brings his filmmaking intensity to a story of revenge set in a London as bleak and brooding as the prison from which convicted killer Harry Lomart (Reed) and his fellow inmate (Ian McShane) escape. Once free, Harry sets out to exterminate his seductive wife (Jill St. John), who carries another man's child. Armed with a handgun, fueled by rage, Harry draws closer to his sitting target. Also closing in: a police inspector (Edward Woodward), who's determined to protect the hunted woman.  Reed and McShane – one grim, one voluble, and both steeped in violence -- make an intimidating tough-guy team.   "Bastard must be made out of concrete!" Welcome back to Not A Bomb! This is the podcast where we dive into some of cinema's biggest box office failures and explore whether they deserve a second chance. “Re-May-ke” month is still rolling on as we peel back the layers on the darkly entertaining and tightly wound revenge story from 2000, Get Carter. Based on the novel “Jack Returns Home,” Get Carter failed to reach the heights of the 1971 version and only made back roughly 33% of its production budget. Sylvester Stallone was definitely trying to do something new with his career in 2000, but the film didn't resonate with critics or the general audience. Does this 2nd remake of the famous British crime film deserve all the hate? Grab your trench coat, put on your best brooding face, and join us as we dissect this gritty gem on Not a Bomb!Get Carter is directed by Stephen Kay and stars Sylvester Stallone, Miranda Richardson, Rachael Leigh Cook, Alan Cumming, Mickey Rourke, and Michael Caine. This week, we can be found guesting all over the internet.

For this interview special of Electric Friends, I'm speaking to Andy Gray, one of the most sought-after DJs, songwriters, producers and composers of the last few decades.Andy made a name for himself in the early 90s in the growing dance music scene, with his remixes and work with his group Amoeba Assassin, and for his work with Paul Oakenfold's Perfecto label. Oh god, Graham's shining the spooky light under his face again - sounds like time for a Halloween special. And it is, with Mark Cunliffe of We Are Cult joining the show once again to talk about The Haunted House of Horror, a 1960s British horror movie with an all-bases-covered title. It's the familiar tale of a group of horny and stupid teens who go to an old house for a seance and end up beset by entities even older and more sinister than Frankie Avalon, the Beach Blanket Bingo star who plays a character described as the essence of Swinging London. So, not entirely persuasive casting in the lead role, but there's an impressive supporting cast including Jill Haworth and Get Carter's George Sewell, who does not play one of the teens, as he was never young. Aside from exploring the varied CVs of cast and crew, Graham and Mark also appreciate the movie's surprisingly nasty kills, the reshoots that led to the ending making no sense at all, and the time when Mark accidentally went to a Chesney Hawkes concert. If you want to keep us buying clothes at the Men's Shop, you can donate to our Patreon where Mark and Graham are about to reteam and tackle Taylor Swift's Eras concert film in a Pop Screen exclusive. The Long Good Friday elevated the British gangster film to a level not seen for a decade since Get Carter, and sees London gangster Harold Shand (Bob Hoskins) and his girlfriend Victoria (Helen Mirren) embroiled in a scheme to redevelop parts of London's Docklands with finance from a New York mafia boss. The film features some prophetic scenes in which Harold espouses a new future for London, a London at the centre of Europe, with opportunity to create incredible wealth - a wealth he would most likely have made had the IRA not started interfering in his affairs. In this episode of Screenshot, Mark Kermode speaks to Dame Helen Mirren about the changes she made to the script and to her character's role, and also about how her uncle's connections to the London underworld helped her in the part. Mark also talks to tour guide Rob Smith, who leads a tour of the film's locations around London's Docklands. Exploring the world of the British gangster film further, Ellen E Jones meets author Kim Newman who talks us through the changing nature of these films from the 1930s to the present day, and Louis Mellis who, alongside David Scinto, wrote a triptych of British gangster films including 2000's Sexy Beast. Lynda La Plante, creator of the seminal British gangster crime drama Widows, drops in with a Viewing Note in which she makes an offer you can't refuse. What's a Messiah to do?…Sounds like it's time for Episode 86 of Pop Art, where we find the pop culture in art and the art in pop culture. It's the podcast where my guest chooses a movie from popular culture, and I'll select a film from the more art/classic/indie side of cinema with a connection to it. Today, I am happy to welcome back as my guest, movie hyphenate writer, filmmaker, academic, businessman and coach Tony Klinger, who has chosen as his film, the satire of religion and Biblical epics, Monty Python's Life of Brian, while I have chosen Pier Paolo Pasolini's austere, neorealist The Gospel According to St. Matthew, both films revolving around messiahs. Tony also joined me previously for Episode 57 where we talked his father's film Get Carter with Bad Day at Black Rock. We also covered Monty Python and the Holy Grail on Episode 3 with my guest Jay Cluitt where we combined it with The Seventh Seal. And in this episode, we answer such questions as: What is the difference between British and American humor? What is the correct translation of the title of Pasolini's movie? Who is Loretta? What is the difference between a European and American approach to spiritual subject matter? Why did the Pythons lose funding two days before leaving for Tunisia to start filming? Why did it take three years to get Matthew into a theater in England? What was the world's most expensive cinema ticket? Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade? How did the Pythons use Norway's ban to promote the film? What did the Vatican City newspaper L'Osservatore Romano call Matthew? Who is Mary Whitehouse and would you want to be one? How well would Pasolini do today in regards to the metoo movement? Who is Otto? How did the Tunisian extras criticize the directing of Life of Brian? Was there a doctor in the house? A film that even Stallone himself considers to be the worst of his career (That is right even worse than "Rhinestone", "Driven" or "Get Carter"). Is it that bad? Well yeah, it pretty much is. But just like last week that doesn't mean we don't have a fun episode for you. Even if most of that fun will probably stem from listening Scott and Craig losing their minds as they try to comprehend how anyone wrote this. Moreover, how anybody wrote this and thought it was funny! Elsewhere in the episode, Scott and Craig discuss how this might be the most generic movie ever made, how it is visible watching the film Stallone does not want to be there and just how hard Estelle Getty works to try and save the film (it doesn't work but it is still a worthy effort - the only worthy effort in the movie). Plus, we talk about the original darker draft of the script, the wild character inconsistencies and how this film is connected to the other worst film we have covered ,"The Patriot."

Comedy writer Jordan Morris (Bubble; Jordan, Jesse Go!) joins to discuss the 1971 British crime film, GET CARTER, starring Michael Caine. This ruthlessly violent drama, directed by Mike Hodges, follows the eponymous gangster Jack Carter (played by Caine) on a quest to avenge his brother's murder. The movie has long been a benchmark in the genre of underworld sleaze, but how does its bleak worldview compare to living in 2022, (not to mention the year 2000 remake starring Sylvester Stallone)? The lively discussion also spans Jordan's early moviegoing in Orange County, formative Jurassic Park obsession, Fuddruckers video games, '80s sex thrillers, smells of the '60s, Paul Schrader, stick shift driving, body horror, and yes... movie theater parking. GET CARTER is currently available to stream on HBO Max.

The list includes "The Equalizer," "Law & Order," "Quantum Leap," "Seinfeld," "Curb Your Enthusiasm," "Flaked," "The Last Man on Earth" and recently in "The Mandalorian."   The list goes on.  However, it is his role as Bobby Munson on "Sons of Anarchy" for the full seven seasons that has gotten him the most recognition. The blessing and the curse of a high profile television show is brought to bear.   We get the full monty on our man Boone, from his childhood and time playing collegiate and professional soccer to the early beginnings in NYC with Buscemi and their experience with Martin Scorsese, Peter Gabriel, Roseanna Arquette and Nick Nolte on the film NEW YORK STORIES to the Fincher/Nolan days to "SOA" to now.    Boone is great fun to talk with and he is both reverential and candid in equal measure. So pull up a chair, have an oat soda, and listen to Boone wax on about a life in showbusiness, no matter how reluctant he may be about defining himself as such.   We are in Boonetown: population: 1.   Please remember to hit subscribe on our YouTube Channel or on Apple or Spotify.
