MEET THE AUTHOR Podcast: LIVE - Episode 56Originally aired Wednesday JUNE 8, 2022 Featuring DR. MICHELE FINNERANABOUT DR. FINNERAN: Dr. Finneran's mission in writing..."Surviving Domestic Abuse: Formal and Informal Supports and Services", is to help victims of domestic abuse navigate effectively through the myriad of formal and informal supports and services. She interviewed real-life survivors and utilized their voices to translate what was helpful in escaping the realm of domestic abuse. Dr. Finneran's passion in writing this book is to provide knowledge, give support options and ultimately empower victims of domestic abuse. It is also the intent of this author to leverage victims' perceptions, reflections and feelings...and to document recommendations for policy, strategy and decision making for supports and service providers.
Nearly a decade ago if not more, I had a mental health crisis, it was silent and debilitating. Being self aware, I caught on to what my mind and body were going through not to mention that quiet and subtle voice that guides you through the storm was incessant in my mind space that I should go to my community mental health center and address what I was feeling.I showed up at the closest NHS Mental Health Centre and spent hours in a closed room with my psychiatrist at the time. Excruciating hours of answering questions and evaluations being done. Mind you, I already knew what my diagnosis was - Bipolar Disorder. We both knew that. So, what's with the re-evaluation? I never asked. All that happened after was being put on different cocktails of medication and rigorous therapy treatment plan. This didn't make any sense at that time until I saw a copy of the psychiatrist assessment and there was this remark: “Bipolar Disorder with traits of BORDERLINE PERSONALITY DISORDER”.Now, the first can be managed with medication but the latter, many therapists don't even want to deal with clients living with BPD. Bipolar Disorder is a mood disorder which can be treated with medication. However, BPD is a personality disorder which cannot be managed with medication and YOU as the patient must be committed to your wellness through CBT/Talk Therapy which is barely a Hail Mary.Borderline Personality Disorder (also known as Emotional Dysregulation) is a mental health condition that is characterized by unstable moods, behavior and relationships. People living with BPD have an intense fear of abandonment and instability, as well as inappropriate anger, impulsiveness, frequent mood swings that may push others away. BPD patients deeply want to have loving and lasting relationships. While this is achievable, as someone with a lived experience, you may want to get out of your way first and commit to your healing process. On this first episode of season 2, my guest co-host is Dr. Michele Finneran, a Psychotherapist and Author in the United States. We dissect the topic ‘BORDERLINE PERSONALITY DISORDER'. The cause, how it's diagnosed, associated trauma and triggers, push and pull effect and WHY most therapist won't take a BPD case.Welcome to SEASON 2 of NO JUDGEMENT! I have missed you!

Trigger warning. This episode is being released on the 4 year anniversary. It was a tragic and graphic event for the students, teachers, administration, first responders who witnessed the inital scene. Like trauma, the aftermath continues for years for those involved as well as the communities. If you feel like you're going to be triggered, wait until you're more emotionally ready to hear the episode. Today's guest, Dr Michele Finneran, Ph.D., is an Author, Psychotherapist, and Mental Health Advocate. Her expertise was called upon by some students from the Parkland shooting who were in needed of coping and dealing with this unforeseen trauma. Survivors of the shooting, teachers and students alike, have struggled with survivor's guilt and other symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Today's discussion is about the discoveries Dr. Finneran learned, while helping these victims navigate a new normal; the images, sounds, sights, and horror seen by innocent victims, children really. I'm sure like me, many of you watched these crazy events unfold on TV. Standing in disbelief at the images unfolding. Perhaps, double checking with your kids to make sure they were ok, no matter what state or city you were in or sending that “I love you” text as you were reminded how quickly life changes. 4 years ago today, February 14th 2018, a 19 year old walked into Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL. He opened fire, killing 17 people, and injuring 17 others. The gunman, a former student, fled the scene on foot by blending in with other students, and was arrested without incident about an hour later in nearby Coral Springs. The Parkland shooting, this killing spree, is the deadliest high school shooting in U.S. history. The gunman pleaded guilty and apologized. The perpetrators sentence will be determined this month. Let's talk about your experience with some of the Parkland school shooting survivors. It's hard to believe it was 4 years ago today. Dr. FinneranFor me, living right next to the community and being someone who is treating some members in the community, it really hit on a personal level, and it shook me on a professional level as a therapist. It shook me to the core. I had to take my own personal training and school myself on the traumatization of something like this happening. Seeing families and students which were impacted in the building, is something I can't even describe. I don't even know how to articulate it. It was something I've never seen before and nothing I've ever experienced before.JenWhat moment shook you to the core? Dr FinneranThe day it happened. I was in therapy with a parent of a student in Parkland the day it happened, February 14. I was sitting there having counseling with her and her phone was blowing up in the session. She was looking at her phone and I asked her if everything was, ok? She said, “I don't know. I don't think so. There is something happening with my child. I'm not sure what's going on. I'm going to have to leave the session.”I said, “Go! Take care of your child, your teen. Support the podcast message: https://www.patreon.com/INEEDBLUE

There isn't enough discussion about the people that surround the abuse victim. Those people can be helpful but can 100% become an incredibly large issue as well. Dr. Finneran's mission in writing this book, "Surviving Domestic Abuse: Formal and Informal Supports and Services", is to help victims of domestic abuse navigate effectively through the myriad of formal and informal supports and services. Special Guest this Week: Michele A. Finneran, Ph.D - Author, Psychotherapist, Domestic Abuse & Mental Health Advocate, Published Author Join our Conversation about her Newly published Text book on Domestic abuse called: 1st Edition - Surviving Domestic Abuse Formal and Informal Supports and Services: https://www.routledge.com/Surviving-Domestic-Abuse-Formal-and-Informal-Supports-and-Services/Finneran/p/book/9780367859589 Dr. Michele Finneran Guides, "My book examines how formal and informal supports and services mitigate the damaging (and sometimes fatal) social cost of domestic abuse. Highlighting victims' perceptions of support through in person interviews with survivors of domestic abuse, useful feedback and identification of what support and services were deemed effective and helpful in victims' attempts to abolish their abusive relationships can be deducted. In writing my book, my goal was not only to address the systemic need for changes in working with the population of victims of domestic abuse, but to also make this book ideal for a broad range of professional communities, including, but not limited to, psychologists, social workers, law enforcement organizations, nonprofit organizations and, of course, victims and survivors themselves. Most importantly, it serves as a tool for students (undergraduate and graduate) studying domestic abuse and prevention."
