Sport is too important to fall into the hands of cultural vandals. The death of Mícheal Ó Muircheartaigh was a reminder of the role sport plays in Irish life.Nothing elevates a community like sporting joy and community is central to all that is good in Irish life. How much credit does Mickey Harte deserve for Derry's win over Mayo? On Free State, Joe tells Dion how Derry pulled off what many felt was the shock of the season. Was it really a shock? Who will Mickey Harte blame next? Was it inevitable that it would fall apart at Derry? On Free State today, Joe and Dion talk about the fall and fall of Mickey Harte. Joe explains why Harte is an intruder in the county and how it went to pieces. They look at why the Derry County Board have betrayed the values of the GAA by bringing Harte in. The power of the GAA is best seen when the people who are its lifeblood support a cause. The sense of a community united for the greater good is what makes the GAA different and special. On Free State, Joe and Dion talk about how the GAA makes a difference and why it contrasts with the one-way street of fandom in the Premier League. Joe explains the importance of the 65 Roses Day, the Fundraising Day for Cystic Fibrosis Ireland, and the phenomenal work the charity is doing. Following their victory over Tyrone last week, Galway's senior footballers welcome in-form Derry in Round 4 of the National League on Sunday (25th Feburary - 1.45pm Pearse Stadium). It's their first meeting since the 2022 All-Ireland semi-final when 2-2 from Damien Comer secured the Tribesmen a 2-8 to 1-6 victory in Croke Park. Galway were also 4-11 to 0-12 winners in their last meeting in the National League up in Owenbeg in Division 2 in 2022. Matthew Tierney, Dessie Conneally, Damien Comer and Tomo Culhane got the goals that day. The last time the Oak Leaf County visited Galway was in 2017 when the hosts again reigned supreme by 5-15 to 2-15 in Tuam Stadium with goals from Eamonn Brannigan, Johnny Heaney, Danny Cummins, Tom Flynn and Shane Walsh. Derry's last victory over Galway in the league was in Pearse Stadium in 2010 by 2-13 to 1-12. But the Ulster champions are a different proposition now with maximum points from their three outings so far following a McKenna Cup success and Mickey Harte's charges will be favourites to maintain their unbeaten run. Leading up to the game, former Derry captain Johnny McBride joined Galway Bay FM's Darren Kelly on 'Over The Line.' == Throw-in at Pearse Stadium on Sunday is 1.45pm and we'll have LIVE coverage here on Galway Bay FM. The 'Over The Line' weekend preview show broadcasts every Friday evening from 7pm on Galway Bay FM.

When the news broke that Mickey Harte was the new manager of Derry, some accepted it as part of how the modern GAA operates. But for others it struck at the heart of the GAA. In a powerful and emotional episode of Free State, Pat Gilroy is back with Joe and Dion to talk about Mickey Harte and loyalty. What is the GAA about? What do we want? Is the association becoming a sham, where there are more barter accounts than at RTÉ?Are the old ideals of loyalty, amateurism and doing good for its own sake disappearing? As professionalism becomes more brazen we ask if the GAA can be saved.Joe also explains the mystical bond he had with his Derry brothers and why that is shattered by the Mickey Harte appointment.Free State with Joe Brolly and Dion Fanning is a Gold Hat Production in association with SwanMcG.For more on Free State: https://freestatepodcast.com/To get in touch with the podcast: info@freestatepodcast.com Hosted on Acast. Kevin Hughes lost his sister Helen and brother Paul in two separate car accidents. He was on the pitch when Paul McGirr died representing Tyrone in an Ulster championship match. Cormac McAnallen was his captain and friend. It's a life of loss- but remarkably Kevin has found a way to survive, grow and cope. He was Man-of-the-match in the historic All-Ireland final of 2003 when Tyrone won their first All-Ireland. This is a story of loss, resolve, laughter and pain. Kevin Hughes is one of the most remarkable people we've ever come across. It's also 20 years since Tyrone won their first All-Ireland. The reward is a place in the Ulster semi-final against Derry. In the immediate aftermath, Ryan reveals walking away from Monaghan, why he did it and how he came back. Mickey Harte joined Oisin and Michael Murphy in the BBC Studio and at half-time, pretty much dismissed the chance of a second-half come back. Needless to say, Oisin was waiting on the wings at full-time! We reflect on a comfortable win for Rory Gallagher & co over Fermanagh The GAA Social, with Ryan O'Toole in Omagh.

What a podcast. From Gingers (African sunset) to going on the session before the 2008 All-Ireland final- and lying to Mickey Harte. Owen Mulligan is brutually honest but after coaching Tyrone to the All-Ireland U20 title- there's a bit more to 'Mugsy' than many perhaps know. A facinating insight into on of sports greatest rivalries & what he really thought of Oisin McConville. The story of how his Tyrone days came to an end is incredible and how his stubborness prevented a return to red and white. With laughter throughout- this podcast is a colourful hilarious journey into the life of Mugsy and more importantly a new direction on the sidelines- and one he's pretty good at. Oisin believes he won the good looking competition.

Kerry are the 2022 football league champions with a fifteen point hammering of Mayo over the weekend but it was David Clifford's magic that once again set the game apart. Donnchadh Boyle and Dick Clerkin joined Sinéad Kissane on this week's Throw-In podcast to discuss all the football action and while Clifford's 1-06 was breathtaking, it's the rest of his game that really makes him special says Clerkin. “He is so creative, not just with himself, and to me that almost sets him apart. He just does so much damage to a team - again not just from his own boot, but from his own hands and vision - you could probably associate at least a goal and fifteen to him directly yesterday. It's just a phenomenal return for one player in an attacking unit that you know I've never seen myself, but I guess we're just privileged to be watching it at the minute.” Roscommon collected the Division 2 title with an injury time goal to seal the win over Galway while Cavan took Division 4 with victory over Tipperary and in Division 3 Mickey Harte continues to work his managerial wonders with Louth's win over Limerick that sees the Wee County return to Division 2. Meanwhile, in the hurling, John Mullane joined Sinéad and Donnchadh to look back on Waterford's fourth hurling league title after the Déise beat Cork by six points and 2022 could be a special year for the county he says. “They went up, collected the cup, took the congratulations, took the pats on the back and it was a case of we move on, Championship in two weeks' time and that's a sign of a really, really good team and what possibly could become a great team. They know what they want to achieve and I think everything's in place for them to go and possibly achieve the ultimate this year.” Every Monday the Throw-In brings you the best insights and analysis from all the weekend GAA action. It's less than a week out now from the final so it's definitely the right time to be talking tactics. In this latest episode of the Mayo News football podcast, as we continue our build-up to the big game, it's tactics all the way.Mayo News columnist Billy Joe Padden hosts this episode, featuring special guest Stephen Rochford, who knows plenty about setting up against Tyrone, first as Mayo manager and latterly as coach with the Donegal team. In a wide-ranging discussion, both teams are assessed in detail. Billy Joe and Stephen discuss Tyrone's defensive set-up and counter-attacking style and the evolution of Tyrone's play since Brian Dooher and Feargal Logan took over from Mickey Harte. The teams' kickout strategies are analysed and possible match-ups are considered before the discussion moves onto Mayo's approach, in terms of the tempo they like to play at and their pressing style. Aidan O'Shea's possible role, how the Mayo forwards will deal with Tyrone's suffocating defending and the impact of the two benches all get a mention before the focus turns to giving a verdict on how the final is likely to go. The Mayo News football podcast is produced and edited by Ger Duffy Media. The show is sponsored by Ceramic City and Swinford Motors, two fine Mayo businesses with whom we're proud to be associated this year.
The rapid-fire National League campaign is now over with the action getting underway in this year's Championship next weekend. Mayo take the field next Saturday, when they face Sligo in a Connacht SFC quarter-final tie at Markievicz Park.In this episode of the Mayo News football podcast we use the short lull in hostilities between League and Championship to preview this year's race for the Sam Maguire. Billy Joe Padden hosts the Championship preview episode and he's joined by fellow Mayo News (and Irish Examiner) columnist Colin Sheridan and by Mick Foley of the Sunday Times. In a wide-ranging discussion, the lads look ahead to the summer campaign from a number of different angles. Their focus initially is on Mayo, where, naturally, they zero in straight away on the loss that Cillian O'Connor represents to a Mayo team that start out as favourites to retain the Nestor Cup but whose more expansive plans this year have been undercut by the Achilles injury suffered by their talisman. The lens then widens out to consider Galway and Roscommon, both of whom were relegated from Division One last weekend and who seem destined to meet in Connacht at the semi-final stage. Their respective strengths and weaknesses are examined, as are their prospects for provincial honours. Casting the net wider still, the lads survey other potential last-four competitors, before their gaze fixes on the quixotic endeavours of John Maughan and Mickey Harte. Both men have walked the line more than once on All-Ireland day but this year their respective charges in Offaly and Louth - both of whom enjoyed League promotion this year - are set to meet in the first round of the Leinster Championship.Wrapping up this Championship preview episode, all three provide their predictions on who'll come out of Connacht and then they go on to declare who they think will get their hands on Sam in August. This episode of the Mayo News football podcast is now online and is available to listen to on iTunes, SoundCloud, Podomatic and Spotify. You can also listen to it directly on the Mayo News website as well as on the Mayo GAA Blog. The Mayo News football podcast has its own Twitter presence, @MayoPodcast, so if you're a Twitter user you should follow us there to make sure you get the latest podcast-related updates, including new episodes.
