Registered dietician Marie McGregor from the Sport Science Institute of South Africa joins Lester Kiewit to discuss “bonking” — the sudden energy crash that can affect endurance athletes during tough events like the Comrades Marathon. Following recent reports of runner Moira Harding going missing near the finish line, there has been speculation about bonking as a possible cause. Marie stresses that we cannot speculate on what caused her condition, as there are many factors that can lead to confusion and distress in endurance athletes. In this conversation, she explains what bonking is, why it happens, key signs to watch for, and practical strategies to avoid it. Whether you’re a seasoned runner or just curious about endurance sports, this discussion offers valuable insights to help you stay fuelled and finish strong. Is this fitness advice great, or terrible?1. If you want to lose weight, avoid spiking your blood sugar because you'll release insulin, which makes you store fat. 2. Don't eat past 7pm or you'll gain weight since you aren't burning off the calories overnight.3. Using the Leg press machine is safer for your back than back squats4. Fresh foods are healthier than frozen or canned5. If you want to tone a muscle without it getting bulky, use light weights and do higher reps. 6. To lose weight, do your workouts in the fat-burning zone heart rate7. If you have an injury, the best thing to do is rest it. 8, If you're tracking your calories and you stop losing weight, you should lower your calories. Are you working out, but don't look like it? Welcome back to The Business of Wellness Podcast with host, Jaclyn London, RD! Today, Jaclyn sits down with Katia Pryce the CEO and founder of DanceBody. Katia shares her journey of starting and growing her dance fitness business, starting as a performer and realizing that people would pay her to work out with them, leading her to start Dance Body in 2013. She initially rented studio space and focused on building a community of dancers and fitness enthusiasts. As the business grew, she developed a structured formula for the classes optimized for scale, and hired performers who understood the dedication and commitment required. The business evolved before the pandemic, with a shift to digital streaming and a focus on building a hybrid model of in-person and online classes. Katia emphasizes the importance of community and creating a unique brand identity; the importance of being intentionality in business, and the struggle of saying no to specific opportunities so that you can focus on what matters. She shares her decision to focus on digital expansion rather than opening a new brick-and-mortar studio and emphasizes the value of organic brand awareness. Katia also highlights the need for a balanced approach to fitness, debunking the myth of low-impact workouts and emphasizing the importance of cardiovascular training and strength-building as we age. Listen to this episode if you're interested in: Starting a business based a creative passion. Learning how to build a strong community as the secret ingredient for the growth and sustainability of a business. What if strength isn't about how much we can lift, but how we manage life's struggles? What if we've been told lies our whole life about what it means to truly TAKE UP SPACE? What if failing isn't the end of a goal, but helps you set the goal itself? Today's SEASON 9 FINALE episode is with the incredible Alyssa Ages — journalist, strongman competitor, and author of SECRETS OF GIANTS: A Journey To Uncolver The True Meaning of Strength. IN THIS EPISODE WE TALK ABOUT: The importance of asking WHY, not HOW How endurance athletes frame FAILURE, and how to use this specific tactic in your own life way beyond achieving strength goals Why it's so hard for women especially to TAKE UP SPACE, the sneaky language to watch out for, and how to reframe your relationship with it The importance of using the word YET "BULK" (this is mind-blowing!) What Alyssa did when she realized the story she'd been telling herself for a DECADE was a lie Strength as we AGE and how to reverse hamful narratives even if we think "it's too late" and so much more! This is an episode you'll want to share with your friends, parents, grandparents, siblings, and more. Thank you for making Season 9 one of the best yet. See you in September for Season 10! ~ ABOUT ALYSSA: Alyssa Ages is the author of SECRETS OF GIANTS: A Journey to Uncover the True Meaning of Strength (Avery/Penguin Random House) and a journalist whose work has appeared in ELLE, SELF, GQ, Slate, The Globe & Mail, and others. She is a mom, strongman competitor, endurance athlete (six marathons & an Ironman), rock climber, CrossFitter, and former member of the Jersey City Bridge & Pummel roller derby team. Her first book, Secrets of Giants (Avery/Penguin Random House, 9/23), is part personal narrative, part research mission, part midlife crisis odyssey into the world of strength to answer the question: What if strength isn't about how much we can lift, but how we manage life's struggles. ~ SHOW NOTES: Buy SECRETS OF GIANTS Alyssa's website Alyssa on IG Alyssa's speaking page ~ TICKETS to WANT YOUR SELF: A Book Launch Cabaret at The Bourbon Room on 7/16 TICKETS to MODERN FRIENDSHIP at Guild Hall in conversation with Anna Goldfarb on 6/30 ~ Join THE WANT COMMUNITY!
