Map features in Snapchat and other popular mobile apps, including The Weather Channel and Citi Bike, referred to New York City as “Jewtropolis” on Thursday in what appears to have been an anti-Semitic act of digital vandalism. Each of the affected apps uses mapping company Mapbox for their mapping features. Mapbox in turn relies partially on user-generated information, apparently opening the door to such attacks. “Snap Map relies on third party mapping data which has unfortunately been subject to vandalism,” Snapchat said in a tweet Thursday. “We are working with our partner Mapbox to get this fixed immediately.” Mapbox also provides mapping data and services to companies like Uber, Foursquare, and Instacart. Most recently, he was Assistant Director and Division Chief in the Middle East and Central Asia Department where he oversaw surveillance and program work on fragile states: Egypt, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, and Yemen, and was Mission Chief for Libya and Somalia. He is the recipient of the 2014 IMF Operational Excellence Award for his work on Libya. Previously, he was the Chief of the Regional Studies Division, where he oversaw regional surveillance of 32 countries in the Middle East, North Africa and Central Asia regions, and the production of the Regional Economic Outlook. Prior to that, he was the Chief of the Middle Eastern Division of the IMF Institute where he oversaw capacity development in that region. He joined the IMF in 1999. From 1991 till 1999, he was on the faculty of Finance in the Department of Finance, University of Notre Dame in Indiana. He also served as a consultant to the World Bank, and to the private sector in the US. Ralph Chami has a BS from the American University of Beirut, an MBA in Finance and Statistics from the University of Kansas, and a Ph.D. in Economics from the Johns Hopkins University. His areas of specialization are: banking regulation and supervision, financial markets, and remittances. His hobbies include music and yoga. This podcast will explore the remarkable story of an enslaved Muslim man named Omar ibn Said. His autobiography is one of the Library of Congress's newest acquisitions. Written in Arabic in 1831, it is one of the very few memoirs written by an African-born man in the Americas. The podcast will trace Said’s life journey and the afterlife of his autobiography. Speaker Biography: Véronique Tadjo is a journalist, painter, and award-winning author of numerous volumes of fiction, poetry and children's literature. Tadjo's work includes "A Vol d'Oiseau/As the Crow Flies," "Reine Pokou/Queen Pokou" (awarded the Le Grand Prix Littéraire d'Afrique Noire in 2005), "Le Royaumme Aveugle/The Blind Kingdom," "L'Ombre D'Imana/In the Shadow of Imana," and "Loin de Mon Pere/Far from My Father." Her books for children include "Mamy Wata and the Monster." She studied at the University of Abidjan, the Sorbonne in Paris, as well as Howard University. Chet Van Duzer's analysis of four maps in the African and Middle Eastern Division at the Library of Congress included: the world map in a seventeenth-century manuscript of Ibn al-Wardi's Kharidat al-'Aja'ib wa Faridat al-Ghara'ib (The Pearl of Wonders and the Uniqueness of Strange Things); the world map in a 1553 Turkish manuscript of Zakariya al-Qazwini's 'Aja'ib al-makhluqat wa ghara'ib al-mawjudat (The Wonders of Creation and the Oddities of Existence); the world map in a 1565 Persian manuscript of the same work by al-Qaaini.; and the map of the Holy Land in the 1695 Amsterdam edition of the Haggadah. Like their counterparts in other languages, artists' books in Hebrew and Yiddish embrace the new, the innovative; and they achieve their artistic vision in ways that range from the cutting edge of technology to a mastery of book arts planted firmly in the traditions of the past. In this talk, Ann Brener casts a curator's eye over the Hebraic artist's books in the Library of Congress and sketches various trends and historical processes in the development of the collections. Speaker Biography: Ann Brener is the Hebraic area specialist in the African and Middle Eastern Division at the Library of Congress. She received her doctorate from Cornell University and is the author of two books on Hebrew poetry from Muslim Spain. Kevork Bardakjian presented "Scribes, Compositors and the Mind in the Making: the Armenian Script and the Creation of an Armenian Literary Identity." Levon Avdoyan discussed "The Continuity and Change of an Armenian Identity in the Digital Age." Following the lectures, participants visited the new exhibition, "To Know Wisdom and Instruction: The Armenian Literary Tradition at the Library of Congress." Speaker Biography: Born in Beirut, Kevork Bardakjian received a degree in Armenian Studies at Yerevan State University in 1969 and a Ph.D. in Armenian Studies at Oxford University in 1979. He is the director of the Armenian Studies Program at the University of Michigan and the director of Graduate Studies at the Department of Near Eastern Studies at the University of Michigan. He has written six books, including "Hitler and the Armenian Genocide." His main interests are literature, history, church history, identity and genocide. Speaker Biography: Levon Avdoyan is a specialist for Armenia and Georgia in the Library's African and Middle Eastern Division.

Yermiyahu Ahron Taub reads from his new book of poetry, "Uncle Feygele," which explores the issues encountered by gay Orthodox Jews. He follows up with questions from the audience regarding the book and translating between English and Yiddish. Speaker Biography: Yermiyahu Ahron Taub was born and raised in an ultra-Orthodox community in Philadelphia. He received his secondary education in yeshivot in his hometown and in Baltimore. A Phi Beta Kappa and summa cum laude graduate of Temple University, he received an M.A. in history from Emory University and an M.L.S. from Queens College, City University of New York. Taub is is the author of three volumes of poetry, "Uncle Feygele," "What Stillness Illuminated/Vos shtilkayt hot baloykhtn" and "The Insatiable Psalm." He is a librarian in the African and Middle Eastern Division of the Library of Congress.
