I had a blast chatting with the great Australian-born actor and world-class raconteur, Thaao Penghlis, about his career and creative process.  If you're a fan of NBC's long-running soap opera, Days of Our Lives, then you're also likely to be a fan of Thaao's. He's had a remarkable four-decade, 1500+ episode run on the show playing both the seductively villainous Count Tony DiMera and the Count's evil look-a-like impersonator Andre DiMera. Thaao has earned 3 Emmy nominations for Outstanding Leading Actor and a Soap Opera Digest Award for Favorite Return.Thaao's infamous dual roles are on top of playing a wide-range of characters on various TV series, movies, and plays, including two other daytime series, General Hospital and Santa Barbara, as well as appearances on the 1980's prime time reboot of Mission Impossible, in which Thaao played master-of-disguise Nicholas Black. Although Disc Two of My Lives kicks off with a live version of a classic 70s song, the rest of the track list features Billy Joel B-Sides and early versions of songs from the 80s along with a few album tracks.    While it seems random initially, there's a light narrative running through the selections. Here, you can compare work-in-progress tracks to the final versions, along with hit songs from the same era. Together, they provide insight into Joel's writing style.    We see the benefits of saving riffs, ideas, and whole songs for the right moment. The My Lives box set is a curious addition to the Billy Joel discography. The four-CD / one-DVD set, released in 2005, is a mix of unreleased demos, alternate takes, live recordings, cover songs, and a handful of album tracks.    At the time, it was the first glimpse many fans got at unreleased material and songs-in-progress. The first disc, in particular, offers a chronological journey from Billy's earliest solo compositions through his hitmaking reign in the late 70s.    We're exploring that first disc in real-time for this episode. Live in Frankfurt is probably the closest BIlly Joel got to being in a Spinal Tap sequel. The show, recorded on June 18, 1994, is just as notable for its mishaps as it is the band's solid performance.    The show captures the band on the River of Dreams tour, and the full video gives a warts-and-all look at what can go wrong at a concert: We watch as the band struggles through what appears to be stifling heat inside the arena, and navigates the pitfalls of faulty stage mechanics.    Still, the seven-piece ensemble puts on a scorching performance, with plenty of spotlights on the various players and Billy loosening up and getting a little daring by the end of the show.    A truncated version of the concert was released with the My Lives box set in 2005 and as a standalone DVD release titled Live From the River of Dreams in 2007. Since then, the full show has cropped up on YouTube. The Siegfried Line is another Unreleased Track that actually appears on the good for nothing My Lives compilation album. A demo from 1973 this may be the only Billy Joel song that is only played with an acoustic guitar. Professor Zlatko Skrbis is the chief principal investigator of ARC-funded social futures project entitled, My Lives. With the support of various experts and research assistants, the project aims to investigate the challenges and milestones of young Australians as they transition from adolescence to adulthood. Beginning in 2006 and inspired partly by the British documentary series 10 up, the longitudinal project tracks the shifting opinions of over 2000 Queenslanders on salient including job security, early partnering, home ownership, wellbeing and agency, social and environmental attitudes, and approaches to new technology. The cohort was only 12 to 13 years of age when first surveyed; now they are in their mid twenties. One of the most interesting, and perhaps alarming findings stemming from the Our Lives project is that young adults have a less certain idea of their life trajectories and mental health issues are on the rise. These could have serious policy implications for the future.

When Edmund White moved to Paris in 1983, leaving New York City in the midst of the AIDS crisis, he was forty-three years old, couldn't speak French, and only knew two people in the entire city. But in middle age, he discovered the new anxieties and pleasures of mastering a new culture. When he left fifteen years later to take a teaching position in the U.S., he was fluent enough to broadcast on French radio and TV, and in his work as a journalist, he'd made the acquaintance of everyone from Yves Saint Laurent to Catherine Deneuve to Michel Foucault. He'd also developed a close friendship with an older woman, Marie-Claude, through which he'd come to understand French life and culture in a deeper way.The book's title evokes the Parisian landscape in the eternal mists and the half-light, the serenity of the city compared to the New York White had known (and vividly recalled in City Boy). White fell headily in love with the city and its culture: both intoxicated and intellectually stimulated. He became the definitive biographer of Jean Genet; he wrote lives of Marcel Proust and Arthur Rimbaud; and he became a recipient of the French Order of Arts and Letters. Inside a Pearl recalls those fertile years for White. It's a memoir which gossips and ruminates, and offers a brilliant examination of a city and a culture eternally imbued with an aura of enchantment.Edmund White is the author of two previous memoirs, My Lives and City Boy, and a previous book on Paris, The Flâneur.
