For episode two, we fast-forward two decades to 2017 and Mindhorn. Written by and starring Julian Barrett and frequent collaborator Simon Farnaby. If you're a fan of Bergerac, you'll love Mindhorn, the 80s sci-fi cop who can see the truth. Someone who is a big fan of this film is musician, producer, and podcaster Ricardo Autobahn, AKA John Matthews, who joined us to discuss his love for the Isle-of-Man-com. As well as Mindhorn, we chatted at length about 00s cult sitcom Nathan Barley, which, of course, starred Julian Barrett and was ahead of its time, to say the very least. So strap in for Geek Pies, Sugar Apes, and Trashbats, as well as Windjammers, Moonshafts, and Nutmegs. It's time for Mindhorn! Were you into Cursed Objects before it was cool? Like Grandpa Simpson remembering the war, this week Dan and Kasia are holding a seance for those perennial whipping boys and girls, the hipsters – and recalling the green remembered hills of artisan beards, cereal cafes and small-batch trucker hats. Kicking off with a revisit to seminal, frequently painful 2005 sitcom Nathan Barley, we ask whether it is possible to make a defence of hipsters? Isn't it a better world when people are enthusiastically pursuing their own mad little niches and styles – even if their moustaches look a bit daft? Why do hipsters get blamed for gentrification instead of property developers? Why did Adbusters blame them for the demise of the counter-culture? And what about the future: does the word mean anything anymore, when they sell flat whites in Costa? Are we ready to declare the hipster officially dead, and have we identified the assailant: the influencer?  If you enjoyed this episode please join our Patreon!! ** ONLY £4 A MONTH TO SUPPORT YOUR FAVOURITE CULTURAL HISTORIANS - AND GET 25+ FULL BONUS EPISODES AND A CURSED OBJECTS STICKER PACK!** Theme music and production: Mr Beatnick Artwork: Archie Bashford

Charlie Brooker is one of the most influential satirists working today. Having started out as a cartoonist, his razor sharp writing on culture and the media made his TV columns for The Guardian, begun in 2000, essential reading for many. It wasn't long until his acerbic and frequently absurd world view found a home on BBC Four in the form of the TV review show, Screenwipe. He's also behind acclaimed comedies like Nathan Barley. But he's found global fame with the series Black Mirror, which has entered the lexicon for a singular form of technology-enhanced dread. In the week that the new season launches, Charlie Brooker joins The Media Show to look back at his career. Presenter: Katie Razzall Producer: Simon Richardson

In this episode of #TheNewAbnormal, I interview Neil Boorman, Head of Creative Lab Europe at TikTok. He builds and leads their in-house creative service, dedicated to producing best in class work on the platform. Prior to TikTok, he was the Content Director at agencies including Wieden + Kennedy, Mother, Grey, and VCCP, before which he was a Content Strategist/Producer at Amnesty International. He's also the author of books inc "It's all their fault" & "Bonfire of the Brands". And...he edited/published the satirical fanzine 'Shoreditch Twat'. (Whose readership combined those who got what was going on, along with those who later watched Nathan Barley and hoped their neighbours were laughing with them, not at them. I'm increasingly concerned about my membership of the former.) So...Neil's been at the leading-edge of culture throughout his career, and in this episode discusses a range of contemporary issues that interest and/or appall him in equal measure. As for the mighty TikTok, Neil explains why he thinks a platform that has 'honesty, humility and authenticity' at its heart is such a spectacular global success, regarding its ability to connect us all via creativity and joy. So you can understand why Trump doesn't like it.

Dubbed by one newspaper as ‘the most hated man in Britain', comedian Chris Morris has always walked a fine line between biting satire and controversy. From his earliest days in local radio, allegedly engaging in stunts that led to his dismissal, to mocking radio and television news structures in On The Hour and The Day Today and skewering moral panics in Brass Eye - Morris has both delighted and appalled critics while gathering a dedicated legion of fans. Comedic experiments such as Nathan Barley and Blue Jam saw him tinker with the very essence of comedy while his first feature film, Four Lions, dealt with the unlikely subject of domestic terrorism. Some see him as a ‘comedy god' while others view him as a menace. But what drives Chris Morris to make comedy, who is he making it for and what is he trying to change, if anything? Host: Hayley Campbell. Producer: Dale Shaw.
