Over the last two decades, the US livestock industry has had some painful encounters with foreign animal diseases– from High Path Avian Influenza and its impact on the poultry industry to “mad cow” to the current looming fear of African Swine Fever. One of the most challenging things about these kinds of highly transmissible and dangerous diseases is how difficult they are to study, and how vulnerable that absence of information can leave the industry. But in the last few weeks, USDA has opened a new facility in Kansas that promises to help close that information gap.DTN Ag Policy Editor Chris Clayton joins us today to discuss his rare first look at the new National Bio and Agro-Defense facility near the Kansas State campus in Manhattan. He got a chance to discuss the facility's top security priorities, learn how the latest, state-of-the-art technology will aim to keep the facility, and US ag, and see for himself how diseases will be studied as the facility gets up and running. Plus, he'll dive into the planned vaccine development work, and highlight the history of protecting US livestock from foreign disease.

Lancaster Farming Industrial Hemp Podcast

8000 Kicks is a Portuguese hemp shoe company founded by Bernardo Carreira and his grandmother Otilia. This week on the hemp podcast we talk to Carreira about the company and why he wanted to make shoes from hemp. “Cannabis fiber happens to be one of the most sustainable, durable natural fibers in the world,” he said. “And fashion is one of the biggest polluters in the world, so it seems like you have a pretty amazing, clear solution for a very big problem.” Today's show offers a unique look at the global hemp supply chain and a reminder that China is still the dominant player in hemp for textiles. “The first hemp we were buying was from France. And then we were buying from Romania,” Carriera said. “But then we realized that the best hemp in the world was in China.” China is far ahead of the rest of the world on hemp textiles, he said, because the Chinese never banned hemp the way the rest of the world did in the 20th Century. While the world lost 80 years of hemp production and development, China never skipped a beat. Carreira said he is hopeful that one day he will be able to source his raw materials from European or American producers, thereby cutting down on manufacturing time and shipping cost. Carreira's grandmother Otilia, co-founder of the company, has a lifetime of experience working in the textile industry in Portugal, but Carreira said she was not at all on board with his original idea of making shoes from hemp because of the marijuana stigma around hemp. But examining hemp fabric first hand she saw that hemp had nothing to do with drugs and was a very interesting material, full of possibilities, Carreira said. 8000 Kicks makes several lines of men's and women's shoes and boots, as well as various accessories like backpacks, hats, wallets and socks. Carreira has offered to giveaway a pair of hemp boots to one lucky listener of the podcast. This edition of the Life of Fitz podcast features host Tim Fitzgerald calling his friend and former Kansas State University president Jon Wefald, who altered the downward spiral of the university while serving as its leader from 1986 to 2009. Wefald and his wife, Ruth Ann, now live on Bay Lake, which is about two hours north of Minneapolis. During Wefald's tenure in Manhattan, he lifted enrollment from around 16,000 to 24,000, he elevated the University's ability to fundraise and earn research funding, built a new library and art museum, but he also refused to give up on the school's tragically bad football program and hired one more coach: Bill Snyder. Without Jon Wefald, what we now know as Kansas State's reality would be dramatically different and the school certainly wouldn't be a member of the Big 12 Conference. Why? Well, aside from the fact that dropping football would have pushed K-State out of the Big Eight, it was in big part thanks to Wefald's vision that the Big 12, a combination of the Big Eight and four former Southwest Conference schools, became reality. In addition to all of that, Wefald and former United States Senator Pat Roberts were the driving forces behind Manhattan landing the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility, which is nearing completion due east of Bill Snyder Family Stadium on the edge of the Kansas State campus. *** Tim Fitzgerald is a sports journalist who writes, does TV, radio and is a long-time podcaster. He has served as publisher of GoPowercat.com, a website that focuses on Kansas State sports, for more than 20 years. Fitz also has stage 4 prostate cancer, so during the initial stages of the pandemic, his doctors have advised him to stay home and lay low. Now, Fitz is fully vaccinated and rejoining society, but his podcast lives on. Welcome to his life and the Life of Fitz podcast. National Bio Technology Forum discussions on the Cownomics Technology for in-situ treatment for Drains Rejuvenation Ecologically speaking, Any natural structure or depression or cavity on the surface, wherein Earth is in bottom, Water on top of it and open to Air (atmosphere) is called a Waterbody. Ecology doesn't differentiate between river, pond, lake, rivulet, drain, canal, or reservoir, as long as the above definition is met, provided human being don't interfere with bottom lamination or top cover. On this planet, there are only three habitats – •Soil, •Water, and •Air And all three come in contact in the same order in a natural Waterbody. Thus A Waterbody is natural biggest pool of habitat for microorganisms, whose metabolic activities help in regeneration of natural resources on this planet. •Ecology is not just restricted to terrestrial, the cycle gets completed with all the five key elements of life on the planet •Our shortsightedness was limited to terrestrial life only therefore we couldn't visualize the role of Water & Air •All are linked and all are mandatory phases of the cycle all this and more in this episode. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/vaidicsrijan/message

On today's show, I look at some various topics popular in the infectious disease news circles including Acute flaccid myelitis (AFM). This story has dominated the news this cycle ever since the cases out of Minnesota were reported. Since then, cases from Texas, New York, Washington, Colorado and others have made the headlines. Earlier this week, I spoke to CIDRAP director Mike Osterholm, PhD about AFM and the situation in Minnesota. I also look at the resurgence of cholera in Yemen and the status of the National Bio- and Agro-defense Facility in Manhattan, Kansas. It's always great to report on successes we have in the battle against infectious diseases and I could report on one out of Vietnam. In the second half, I look at the WHO announcement that Vietnam and the Pacific islands of Palau and Wallis and Futuna eliminated lymphatic filariasis as a public health problem. I also introduce you to an article from The Hill by Amesh Adalja, MD on ricin, in light of the recent attacks. The Outbreak News This Week Radio Show, the first and only radio program dedicated to infectious disease and health news and information, airs every Sunday at 1 pm ET in the Tampa Bay area on AM 1380 The Biz and online at http://1380thebiz.com/
