This week, guests Kate Kennedy (@katekennedy) and Lindsay Silberman (@lindsaysilb) are checking in with host Sami Sage (@sami) for a super-sized episode. Because let's be real, we're all thinking the same thing: what the hell happened last night?! (Consider this like group therapy for processing all that we've witnessed...) After that whirlwind of an episode, we have more questions than answers: How do the Ratliffs even move forward from here? Is it worse that Jaclyn made a selfish decision, or that she couldn't stand on business? And what divine forces possessed Gaitok to actually get something right for once? Let's unpack it all. Make sure to subscribe to Sami's Substack for even more White Lotus musings, and leave your own thoughts and theories in the comments. Presentation Secondary School, Kilkenny 2-0 Presentation College, Athenry Roisin Foley (50), Emily Phelan (67)                                     Two second half goals ensured Cup success for Presentation Secondary School, Kilkenny over defending Champions Presentation College, Athenry in a sun-soaked Athlone Town AFC this afternoon (March 19). It's been some season for the Kilkenny kingpins as this victory confirmed a Cup double for the girls with their Senior crew capturing the National title five weeks ago in the same venue with six of the Junior squad involved in that showpiece. It was a case of taking their chances when they came with a sublime effort from Roisin FOLEY to open her account for Kilkenny with twenty minutes of the game remaining.  Vice Captain Emily PHELAN made sure of the win three minutes from time when she saw her effort go in off the keeper. Kilkenny made the brighter start to the contest with Hannah Griffey forcing a brilliant save from Jane Brennan with 13 minutes on the clock. Towards the latter stages of the first half, it was Athenry that dominated most of the possession but just couldn't get the ball on target as the teams went in goalless at the break. Within four minutes, Kilkenny broke the deadlock with a superb set piece from Roisin FOLEY that sailed over the head of Brennan and into the top corner, leaving the Galway shot-stopper no chance. The Galway side had a great opportunity to draw level a few moments later when Niamh Kilgannon had a glancing header goal bound only for Isabelle Carroll to produce a top class save at the near post to deny the youngster. Noone, Duffy and McNamara had half chances blocked down with some solid defensive play from Presentation, Kilkenny. The killer blow for Athenry came three minutes from time when Emily PHELAN'S cross slipped through the hands of Brennan and in for Kilkenny's second of the afternoon. After the game, Presentation College manager Joe Finnerty spoke to Galway Bay FM's Mike Rafferty. == PRESENTATION SECONDARY SCHOOOL, KILKENNY | Isabelle Carroll, Anna Morrissey, Roisin Foley, Hannah Griffey, Maria Ryan, Ellie Barron, Kate Ryan, Olivia Dunphy ©, Emily Phelan ©, Meadhbh Doherty, Ellen Treacy SUBS USED | Kate Dalton for Treacy (46) Amy O'Shea for Barron (46). The HBO and Max documentary series explores the complex world of family vlogging – a popular and potentially lucrative phenomenon in which parents post a steady stream of lifestyle videos on their social media channels to be consumed by loyal subscribers. The content often cultivates a sense of community and attachment for devoted viewers and can generate income for the vloggers. Through the lens of one family's story and the sudden online disappearance of their adopted son, the series raises questions about what motivates vloggers to expose their home lives to the world and examines the wider issues that emerge when parents make their family life public. Bucket list, dream guest Kate Kennedy joined me for a discussion of one of my favorite 2024 reads, One In A Millenial. If I could summarize my nostalgia and feelings in a book, this is it. Just trust me. It is a celebration pop culture moments in the 90's, 00's and today woven with the most perfect cultural commentary that only Kennedy can do. You will laugh, you will cry, you will find yourself reaching out to your oldest friends. Kate and I chatted, Taylor, Jessie Spano, sleepovers, motherhood, school supplies and everything else. I could have talked to her for hours. She has a way in her podcast, Be There In Five, of making you feel like she is sitting right beside you, a friend right there with you and that is how this book feels. A fun convo with your bestest friend and I am jealous for anyone who gets to read it for the first time.

EPISODE 487 - Kate Kennedy Author of Once Upon a School, building a school to serve children without housingI am a mom, a wife, a sister, and a daughter. I am a visionary and a dreamer of big dreams. I am a writer and a theology nerd. I am passionate about empowering others to share their stories through the sharing of my own. My study and research interests include identifying the places where the church meets the world and gathering the beautiful tapestry of stories that live quietly in our community.I began my professional career as a Writer/Producer for Turner Network Television before transitioning into a career in service and ministry. I earned my Bachelor of Arts Degree from Wake Forest University and a Master of Religion and Public Life degree from Emory University. I am currently pursuing a Doctor of Ministry at Pittsburgh Theological Seminar with a particular focus in Creative Writing and Public Theology. In 2018, I founded and led a tuition-free private school for children experiencing homelessness in Atlanta. We began with 9 young scholars and now serve over 60 scholars. The journey to begin this change-making organization is a pivotal part of my story.About the Book       What do you do when you see something you can't ignore? That's what happened to Kate Kennedy one day as she drove down the Courtland Street corridor in Atlanta, Georgia. After that day, she could not look away. Once Upon a School shares the story of a stay-at-home mom of four who ignited a wave of community change by building a school to serve children without housing. One dollar and one day at a time, Kate pushed against all odds to build a program that cares for the most vulnerable children. In the process, she learned more about herself than she ever imagined . . . even when it all began to fall apart. With humor and vulnerability, Kate shares the story of challenging the status quo and digging deep into her own story to find connection, hope, and new answers to old problems. Once Upon a School is a story of racial inequity, generational poverty, and finding community in the most unlikely places. It's about building a school, standing up for children, and finding your place in the world. As the story unfolds, Kate invites readers to challenge themselves and their own communities through the lenses of social impact, personal growth, and theology. Once Upon a School is about daring to dream big and learning to bounce back. This journey reminds us, writes Kate, that “we all have the capacity to make lasting community change in our own unique ways if we can find the strength and courage to take the first step and keep on walking.” https://www.katekennedywrites.com/___https://livingthenextchapter.com/podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/Support the show___https://livingthenextchapter.com/podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/Coffee Refills are always appreciated, refill Dave's cup here, and thanks!https://buymeacoffee.com/truemediaca

Two books of essays consider the female experience through different stages of life. First, Kate Kennedy's One in a Millennial documents coming of age as a member of a highly-scrutinized generation. Her book explores the origins of millennial stereotypes and pop culture, but also focuses on the way that shared experiences of girlhood are often dismissed as frivolous. In today's episode, Kennedy joins NPR's Juana Summers for a conversation that touches on AOL Instant Messenger, college pre-games, and self-editing our own desires. We then hear from Jenny Slate about her new book Lifeform, a compilation of experimental essays that follow her life through five phases: Single, True Love, Pregnancy, Baby, and Ongoing. Slate joined Here & Now's Emiko Tamagawa at a live event in Boston, where the two discussed the confidence it takes to write down our ideas, fear and bravery in love, and Slate's perspective on childbirth and motherhood. To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

Kate Kennedy meets musicians who, like her, had to stop playing after injury and reshape their lives. What does being forced to fall silent mean for a musician's relationship with their instrument? "My name is Julian Lloyd Webber and I am an ex-cellist". The internationally renowned performer, Julian Lloyd Webber talks for the first time in detail to Kate about the moment he realised his 40-year career could be over mid-recital: "Suddenly I lost power in my right arm - I thought I was going to drop the bow. I had never experienced anything like it - I didn't know what was wrong or what to do. I was genuinely frightened". Julian shares the sense of bereavement he felt after his prestigious career of four decades ended due to a herniated disc in his neck. Over the next few weeks, Julian tried to pretend everything was normal. His manager was calling him with engagements he had always wanted to undertake, such as a performance of Shostakovich's First Cello Concerto in Moscow. But the wear and tear of Julian's performing career on his body was too much - he learned that the herniated disc was pressing on a nerve which was causing a loss of power in his arm. Doctors told him that he could have an operation, but with little guarantee of success, and with high risks attached. He had a young family at the time, so chose to sacrifice the cello. He has never played since. Julian and Jiaxin, his wife and fellow cellist, reflect on the last fateful concert they played together and how they've found positives in silence. Kate Kennedy meets musicians who, like her, had to stop playing after injury and rethink their lives. What does this mean for a musician's relationship with their instrument? Aged 11, Stephen Marquiss was labelled an exemplary piano scholar. Gaining a music specialist place in 1990 Stephen promptly attained the highest ABRSM exam mark in the country and reached the televised semi-final of BBC Young Musicians. But then injury forced him to pull out. At 18, his career was all but over, having struggled with recurring RSI, musculo-skeletal issues, which destroyed his confidence and mental health. Ironically, this crisis forced him to address fundamental aspects of how piano is taught and played - and now at 45, Stephen has his own school of playing called Piano Portals, which seeks to rewrite how practice is approached. Kate takes him back to his practice rooms, to help us understand the intensity and the fear of failure that drove him to injury and we learn how his new approach to playing unfolded.Presenter: Kate Kennedy Producer: Erika Wright Production Coordinator: Elisabeth Tuohy Executive Producer: Rami Tzabar Healing Musicians is a TellTale Industries production for BBC Radio 3

Kate Kennedy meets musicians who, like her, had to stop playing after injury and reconsider their relationship with their instruments. We all know that listening to music can have a positive impact on wellbeing and mental health. But what about the performer? The truth is, for anyone wanting to turn professional, this is a highly competitive and pressurised environment often driven in part by fear and anxiety. It's a problem that can have a disproportionate effect on young people - which is why trumpeter Rebecca Toal and cellist Hattie Butterworth started their podcast, Things Musicians Don't Talk About, to try to break the taboo of not acknowledging the difficulties with mental illness that many musicians face. They talk to Kate about their personal experience of 'the system' for training musicians that can so easily break down, often resulting in crippling anxiety and burn-out. Obsessive behaviour and eating disorders are not uncommon as people try to gain some control over the endless cycle of practice and performance. By creating the podcast, Rebecca and Hattie have found a creative way to use their experiences to forge a new and less damaging path for themselves, but also to help others by sharing musicians' experiences honestly. I'd Rather Be Reading

We've actually already talked about today's book and author before on the show—back in January, when the book came out, we mentioned it on the show as it was my first #ReadwithMC book club pick. And now, how lucky are we today to have Kate Kennedy on I'd Rather Be Reading discussing her book One in a Millennial: On Friendships, Feelings, Fangirls, and Fitting In, which came out January 23. This book put into words everything I wish I could have said about being a millennial and perfectly nails down the millennial experience into 336 pages. Some of it is nostalgic and fun—stick around for our lightning round at the end of the episode—but some of it, quite frankly, isn't pretty. In this book and in this conversation Kate introduces us to the millennial paradox, what a lost millennial is, and so much more. In this book and in her work, Kate Kennedy has become the voice of a generation. She is a podcast host of the wildly popular show “Be There In Five,” a New York Times bestselling author—in addition to One in a Millennial, she also wrote a book about her love/hate relationship with social media called Twinkle, Twinkle, Social Media Star, and is a pop culture commentator. She also invented the “remindoormat” in 2014, which she created as a hobby after she decided to paint “turn off your curling iron” on her doormat in an attempt to not burn down her apartment. She then took it to a wider scale to much success, and called it Be There in Five (which later became the name of her podcast), which launched a line of reminder, affirmation, and custom doormats for people on the go. The doormats took off, and Kate left her corporate marketing job to run the business full-time. Kate is still writing her story—as are all millennials—and she's here to talk about her book with us today. I want to make a special dedication to my dear friend Mary, who loves Kate as much as I do and is a fellow millennial and just about the best friend, cheerleader, and hype woman a girl can have. I love you Mary, and I hope all of you love this episode.   One in a Millennial: On Friendships, Feelings, Fangirls, and Fitting In by Kate Kennedy

In fact, many things aren't okay and never will be! But instead of falling into the pit of despair, we're bringing you a little OK for your day. If the entire US economy were worth $1,000, a few of those dollars would be driven by music and movies. Of those few dollars, just three people (of whom one is imaginary) were at the helm in 2023, driving 30 cents of it on their own: Barbie, Beyoncé, and Taylor, who together generated around $10 billion in economic value last year.  But despite this strong showing, women's media is still consistently belittled. Author, culture commentator, and host of the popular Be There in Five podcast, Kate Kennedy joins me to unpack the ways society often delegitimizes women's interests, how pop culture shapes actual culture, and the (financial) power of women's storytelling. “When I went back and looked at some of these shows that I loved, I noticed that the writer's room was all adult men with the exception of one or two episodes in Saved by the Bell's case. And I just thought, wow, it is so interesting that we talk about diversity and representation, like yes, of course, who's on the screen matters, but who's in the writer's room and who's telling the stories really matters too, because that's where stereotypes abound. Because those men were not writing Jesse Spano as an example of an actual feminist. She was written as a character from an adult male's response to like second wave feminist stereotypes. And they found that type of woman irritating, so they wrote Jessie as an irritating character. And it just was an interesting thing for me to explore the way I internalized themes from pop culture thinking about who was writing this and when did it contribute to a stereotype versus when did it communicate an authentic experience.” So says Kate Kennedy, a brilliantly astute historian of millennial culture, which she explores, in depth in One in a Millenial: On Friendship, Feelings, Fangirls, and Fitting in, a bestselling book that's part memoir, but really a love letter and a critique of the culture so many of us grew up in. As part of my book tour I went on Kate's podcast, Be There in Five, where I was immediately taken by her intelligence and deep, deep knowledge of the programming that shaped our consciousness, from Jessie Spano's feminism in Saved by the Bell—and the laugh track it inspired—to the way so many women and girls were taught that our interests were dumb, shallow, and silly. Or, to use the parlance of the day: Basic. In One in a Millenial, Kennedy points to this long tradition of the veneration of action figures, Marvel, and football—and the deprecation of pretty much anything that girls and women value, whether it's romance novels, the Spice Girls, or American Girl Dolls. While her point is not new—and certainly aligned with our summer of the Barbie movie, Taylor Swift, and Beyoncé—her exploration of how it shaped her own mind in childhood, and the way she experiences herself now as a result of it, is revelatory, and something we explore in today's conversation.
