We're back!! After a long hiatus the boys are back with a new look, new episode and new sobriety dates? Listen to find out. This week we have an awesome story from someone you may all know. Dave from the Dopey podcast got with us to share his experience strength and hope. Here just how dark things can be before the dawn, and know that no matter how far down you fall, you can always get back up if you're willing to accept the help being offered to you. You are sure to get something out of it. Dave's story inspired the topic, "identifying with the disease." Though some of us may fight it, eventually we begin to make our using and drinking a part of our identity. We find ourselves among great artist and poets who may have influenced us growing up. Unfortunately, building our identity around the addiction can make it that much harder to surrender. After all, without the drugs and alcohol (or food, sex, gambling, etc) who am I? Get sober and find out. Anything's got to be better than the way we were. Thanks Dave for sharing your story! Listen to the Dopey Podcast anywhere you get your podcast. It's a great place to laugh about the crazy things we used to do!! Glad we're not there today! #54: Live from New York City, it's Liz and Bryce with Dave Manheim from the Dopey Podcast! We sat down with Dave to talk about all things recovery and podcasting. What started as weekly podcast by two close friends, Chris and Dave, about "drugs, addiction, and dumb sh**," has evolved into something bigger than they ever expected or intended. The hope that the show inspires, and the fact it helps folks find recovery, has been an incredible and humbling ripple effect. In the episode we talk about podcasting and more:- Although Dave's recovery has never been centered around creating the Dopey Podcast, he recognizes that recording each week is a cathartic experience and brings him happiness- The everyday circumstances where recovery kicks and we decide to show up for ourselves: in this case, with umbrellas and shopping carts.- Dave's brave decision to relinquish anonymity and embrace including his last name on the show- How praying mantis' evolved from a funny story to a symbol of the Dopey Podcast- Laughing the survivor's laugh: the hope and bond formed between folks who have all experienced something horrible and survived To learn more about Dave and the Dopey Podcast, visit their website here ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------If you or a loved one is experiencing a mental health or substance use related crisis, the following resources can provide immediate help.*If you are experiencing a medical or mental health emergency, please dial 911.Dial 988 for the SAMSHA Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Whether to laugh at our time in rehab, or cry at the worst missteps we made, Dopey tells the truth about drugs, addiction and recovery. We continually mine the universe for stories rife with debauchery and highlight serious drug taking and alcoholism. We also examine different paths toward addiction recovery. We shine a light on harm reduction and medication assisted treatment. We talk with celebrities and nobodies and stockpile stories to be the greatest one stop shop podcast on all things drugs, addiction, recovery and comedy!

A variety of topics are discussed including Dave's personal recovery journey which included MAT (Medically Assisted Treatment) in the form of Methadone which he shares his concerns with long term MAT. As well Dave expands on the very valid point of comedy and tragedy in recovery stories. The comedy side being that those who survive can speak on their crazy times and the tragedy bein those who don't. Dopey is an American self-help and comedy podcast about personal experiences of substance use disorders and addiction. The show was formerly co-hosted by Chris, a fellow person in recovery and graduate student from Boston, Massachusetts who sadly passed during a period of relapse. Dave had a fairly good upbringing and it wasn't until he attended a summer camp that he discovered that he was uncomfortable with himself and this was something that substances could quickly help him with. During collage Dave plugged into the pot smoking culture and little did he know this would just be the beginning of a long battle with drug use. Dave had many attempts at sobriety though his 20's to get sober but nothing seemed to stick. Dave had his first child and after some time he would realize things would have to change if he was to play a greater role in his daughters life. Dave is the host of the Dopey podcast and an inspiration to so many. Dave hit a meeting and this is his story on the sober motivation podcast. Season's Greetings n' Upful vibrations! Please welcome back to the show Dave from Dopey Podcast - now going by his gov't: David Manheim. After 5 years of my dedicated listening/contributing to Dopey, plus his epic, record-holding May 2020 appearance on Upful Life ep.033, and much correspondence between us in the interim, the man they call "Dopey Dave" and yours truly finally met in person, live n' direct at Park City Song Summit in Utah, Sept.2022. A cosmic convergence in stunningly beautiful environs where we were both there in our respective official capacities: as podcast hosts and journalists. We dropped in pretty deep on the last evening of the 4-day event. The revealing - at times intensely-personal - conversation was recorded from the cozy confines of my palatial suite at a high-falutin' ski lodge I really had no business staying. 2:30- Upful Update: Give Thanks n' Gratitude in 2022 10:30 - Introducing DAVID MANHEIM of Dopey Podcast, + a personal message why I feel called to produce programming on wellness/addiction/recovery. 22:00 - INTERVIEW w/ DOPEY DAVE (100min) 2:03:30 - Reflections on Dave + Vibe Junkie JAM Dopey Podcast is a unicorn program - a dark comedy on drug addiction and recovery, plus all the dumb sh*t that happens in between. (check out the profile on This American Life). In addition to holding down 2 full-time jobs (executive for Katz's Deli in NYC, father to two young daughters) - plus numerous losses and unfathomable grief - Dave has not missed a Friday night episode since he started the show with his late friend Chris over six years ago. Dopey recently celebrated it's 8 MILLIONTH DOWNLOAD, and has a legion of fiercely-loyal, dedicated listeners around the world, known colloquially as the Dopey Nation.. On Upful Life ep.033 in May 2020, for nearly 2 hours Dave meticulously and painstaking recounted his journey through heroin addiction of nearly 2 decades. We covered the nascent beginnings of Dopey pod, his relationship with Chris and his friend(s) sudden death, the tragedy and resurgence of Dopey in the wake of their passings, losing his family due to his addictions - then reuniting with them thru sobriety, and a whole lot more. (It's somewhat essential listening before tapping into ep.063, a reconvergence 30 months on down the number line.) For Episode 063, we pick up where things left off, digging into the evolution of Dopey, embracing the transition to David Manheim, the legitimization of Dopey Podcast into professional wellness/recovery spaces, the concept of survivor's guilt, why Dave is a habitual line-stepper, and beyond. After unpacking his magical interview with Carolyn 'Mountain Girl' Garcia, former wife of the late Jerry Garcia, we hear about his relationship with Seth Ferranti, renowned chronicler of outlaw/drug/psychedelic cultures. As we delve deeper beneath the surface, Dave and I chop it up on some real sh*t: more polarizing topics/Dopey guests like "Fentanyl Jay" and divisive shock-rapper Tom MacDonald. From there, things get a bit serious - and personal. The dialogue detours into family politics and our divergent approaches to conversations on the culture wars. Fret not, as friends we certainly course-correct for a properly warm n' fuzzy landing. Thanks to David Manheim of Dopey Podcast for always bringing the Upful vibes! Shoutout to the Dopey Nation - WE SEE YOU!! If any Upful LIFE listeners would like to know more about the Dopey podcast, Dopey Nation, Dopey Zoom meetings, or link w/ Dave, send me an email or DM! As Long As I'm Living, rebuilding our Happier Ever Afters after infant loss (SIDS)
It's Father's Day week, and while our listeners know we have a LOT to say, being a loss father is not a topic we feel qualified to speak on. Enter the Sad Dads! Rob, Chris, and Jay are three friends living in Maine who lost their daughters Lila, Izzy, and Bella to stillbirth. They quickly formed a deep bond over beers and tears, and, from the ashes of stillbirth, the Sad Dads Club was born. Since then, they have welcomed 5 happy, healthy living kids into the world. They have also met and bonded with other Sad Dads, and together they're navigating life after one of the most extraordinarily painful experiences that a parent can endure. It's the worst club in the world, but the membership is the best. We (Judith and Alina) have deliberately kept our voices out of this episode for the most part. We want to take a step back and center dads this week. We have another episode with the Sad Dads coming for you on Sunday: Father's Day. This week's Unashamed Alcoholic guest is Dave Manheim, a fellow podcaster and host of Dopey, an American self-help and comedy podcast about personal experiences of substance use disorders and addiction. Dave is in recovery himself with a wonderful story of addiction to sobriety. I was curious about Dave's personal story as well as what advice he would offer me as someone who also speaks with well known sober people.I hope you enjoy my conversation with Dave.Support the show
Dave grew up in Manhattan, and since he could remember, he always wanted to be a TV show host. He would watch all the famous late-night shows and TV shows with his mom growing up. Regis Philbin would make him feel relaxed, and was a huge inspiration for him. In his early teenage years, Dave always thought of drug users as “poseurs” and was never interested in them. One night though after drinking heavily at a party, he started smoking pot, to help with his nausea. His first real drug experience was taking Acid at a Grateful Dead concert his Junior year in High School. Not too long after that, his drug use quickly escalated to heroin use. In his early 20's, Dave was in & out of rehab multiple times, but it finally took on his 3rd time trying. Dopey Podcast hosts Dave and Chris first met at a rehab center in Connecticut in 2011, where they were both getting help. Dave worked (and still works at) the famous Katz Deli in Manhattan, New York. At first, he wanted to do a show about “The Last Jewish Waiter” based on his experience at the deli. He soon realized that his life was mess and needed to focus on his well-being and getting help. Chris still liked the idea of doing something with the waiter thing, and it eventually morphed into the podcast they have now. Dave & Chris founded the Dopey Podcast in 2016. Their style was a little different than other podcasts; they didn't focus on recovery stories, as they found them boring. Instead, they would tell their “war stories” of their addiction and using years, with doses of edgy humor mixed in. They've had some amazing guests like Dr. Drew Pinsky, Marc Maron & Jamie Lee Curtis. In 2018, Chris was getting his PhD, working in a sober house, and was engaged to his new found love. His life was on the right track, but started falling back into bad habits. Supposedly, he had been injured while on vacation with his girlfriend, was prescribed painkillers, and soon was again taking heroin and other substances. Shortly after, Chris passed away from a drug overdose. When he died, Dave plugged himself back into his rehab support system, by attending meetings. He was determined to not relapse. Dave has no plans to get another co-host, and now does the show solo. Also, hear some of Dave's tales of meeting and partying with celebrities at the world famous Katz's Deli. Dopey with Dopey Dave Dave's addiction may not have started until his 20's, but what started out as occasionally smoking weed quickly turned to using heroin, pills, and other drugs daily. After hitting bottom and entering a treatment center, he met Chris, who he would eventually start the Dopey Podcast with. The original premise of the show was that they would share their craziest war stories - there wouldn't be anything recovery related. "We just wanted to be funny and extreme, but we knew as soon as we did the first episode we needed to say we were sober so that our listeners didn't think we were glorifying drug use and getting high after the show." Dopey soon gained a huge following of addicts from around the world. What Dave didn't know is that Chris had started getting high again. Chris tragically died from an overdose in the summer of 2018. In the wake of Chris's death, Dave expanded the recovery based message of Dopey. The show's audience continues to grow and has featured some incredible stories from celebrity guests. Today Dave is over 5 years sober. His focus in life is his recovery, family, and Dopey. Greetings, congregation! So this week, i'll be attending my grandfather Popeye's funeral in south carolina so i didn't have time for an episode. There is much to discuss tonight: OK Cupid and the green dot, how things come across in text & the power of a well-placed emoji, and the age-old question: is Amy a robot? We get off topic quite a bit & talk other podcasts, names, random 90s shows, and Lego bricks. At some point we remember this is a dating podcast, so we bring it back to unicorns and when to reveal baggage & guilty pleasures. Enjoy! Episode 033 of *The Upful LIFE Podcast* welcomes the legendary DAVE from DOPEY PODCAST! This conversation is a couple of years in the making, and is one helluva heart-filling, harrowing, ultimately heroic story of human resilience and the magic of recovery. Dave has been a fearless leader of the Dopey Nation for a few years now, and his wildly-popular podcast just clocked it's 4 MILLIONTH DOWNLOAD about a week ago. Just an astonishing story with inspiring highs juxtaposed with some of the darkest lows, brutal losses and excruciating sacrifices along the way. Absolutely riveting 100-min conversation with Dave. Followed by a topical, personal journal entry from yours truly, we hear from KEITH GRINER, a successful music photographer also in recovery. WARNING: This episode contains graphic content with regard to drug use and addiction. Please enter with caution, big heart and an open mind. DAVE of DOPEY PODCAST intro @ 8:00 SOMETIMES IT SNOWS IN APRIL - B.Getz - 2:00:00 KEITH GRINER @ 2:17:00 Dave built the Dopey Podcast with his friend Chris, and the show has found unbridled success, though at great cost to Dave, and those around him. From Long Island, NY, he checks in for a 100-minute chat that runs the gamut of his entire journey. We touch on a number of topics, including his personal and career paths, the evolution of Dopey Podcast, his musical tastes and experiences, the tragic deaths of two people very close to him, and the descent into the abyss of his own struggle with heroin and other drugs. Before ultimately partnership, fatherhood, and 4-plus years of recovery deliver us the Dave of today, happy, healthy and radiating. Listening to Dopey Podcast every week for a couple of years, Dave has become one of the most inspiring cats in my life, real talk, and it's nothing short of an honor and privilege to give him a platform to share his story, straight no chaser. A beautifully human tale of darkness, depravity, recovery and rebirth. After Dave's interview, I took the opportunity to read a journal entry from about a month ago with regard to conquering my own demons. Titled “Sometimes It Snows In April”, its a four-year reflection written on the anniversary of the day that Prince passed away. To wrap things up on Ep.033, I reached back to late December 2019, well before all this virus madness, to a conversation I had with rock photographer KEITH GRINER. Keith is someone I've worked with in the music media on a few epic festivals & other occasions. He also has several years in recovery, and it was wonderful to give him the chance to reflect on his own journey, personally & professionally, and share some wisdom with regard to overcoming his addiction. Dopey Dave is a recovering drug addict who spent his 20's using heroin on a daily basis despite a successful career in entertainment. After hitting bottom and entering a treatment center, he met Chris, and his life would never be the same. Chris and Dave became fast friends and started a podcast together - The Dopey podcast - where they shared wildly funny and absurd drug stories from their past. The podcast grew quickly, keeping countless addicts around the world company. Except that two years in - unbeknownst to Dave - Chris started using again, overdosed and died. In the wake of Chris's death, a devastated Dave had to find a way forward through his grief and in doing so, expanded the message of Dopey (drugs actually kill people) and found his own voice as a solo podcaster. I wanted to start today by saying life is short, and you never know when your time is gonna be up. Enjoy each day, live in the moment, laugh a lot, love a whole lot. When we leave this earth, we don’t take any of the materialistic shit that we all think is so important with us. It’s meaningless, a chasing of the wind according to Ecclesiastes. But there’s a chance we might take some of the good times, some of the laughs and some of the love in our hearts on the way up. And there’s an even greater chance, that when we choose to live a life of love and service and honor, we may encourage those who loved us, and those who knew us, to find it in themselves to live another day, striving to be just a little bit better, and love just little bit more. I’d like to dedicate this episode to Chris from the Dopey podcast. You will be missed bro. You were brave enough to share your own struggles with the world, and in doing so, you touched lives across the planet. Your spirit rests in the peace only God can provide, but your memory on this earth will never be forgotten. To Dave: Chris was your partner, your homie, your brother, your co-host, your friend. I hope you find comfort in the many good times and the many good memories that you guys created together both on the Dopey Podcast, and outside in your personal lives. I would encourage you to keep going man. Although I only had the pleasure of chatting with Chris a few times, I am certain he would want you to continue on and carry the legacy of the Dopey Podcast to the next chapter. After all, their are still a lot of dope fiends out there looking for a lifeline, who don’t even know yet that they’re a part of the Dopey Nation. Much love and respect, The Sober Guy Crew. Through Dope Heads, he is putting money where his mouth is… Bryan “Tow Down'' Theriot had a thriving music career in 2000 and a major label record deal with Elektra Records. His debut video, “Country Rap Tune” featuring H.A.W.K. and Big Pokey was a hit. Around the same time, he started a grow operation to provide ‘refreshments' in his H-Town studio and it quickly turned a profit.Since Cannabis legalization was some time away, he unfortunately served over 7 years. During time served, he came up with an idea of how to give back to his community to others incarcerated due to cannabis possession. In 2021 Bryan got together with legendary graphic artist Mike Frost and the duo founded Dope Heads. Digital art trendsetter, Johnny Kash, joined the team to complete the vision. The team will donate a substantial amount of the net earnings from Dope Heads NFTs to organizations designed to help non-violent drug offenders and their families. The first – the idea for The Dopey Foundation sprung from the Dopey Podcast. The podcast's mission has been to create a space for addicts that deals with addiction and recovery in a non judgmental way that helps to end the stigma of prison and drug addiction and develops community. Much of the community has had occasion in their lives to interact with the legal system. A nonprofit organization under IRS Code section 501(c)(3), is currently being formed with a mission to support addicts and alcoholics in their struggles. Dope Heads' partnership with Houston based non-profit, Legends and Legacies is unique and offers direct aid to his Houston community. Legends and Legacies, supports children who have experienced parental addiction and incarceration. The money donated will be used to hire staff to do the training our organization provides – everything these kids miss out on.
